“Sam” is real, but not one specific person, instead is a collection of different people Tim has spoken to over his life.
I think he might have ended the song with “it’s a miracle” because it was the first time he got through the song live without a hitch. Which does seem pretty impressive given the lyrics
Yes that's what I thought. I've seen him perform it where he didn't quite get it all right.
There was actually more after that. Shame people haven't seen the bit that comes after because it's brilliant
His song "Prejudice" is good. Also, "If I Didn't Have You" is a good love song
Also “the good book” x
I think the song is about math/statistics 😜
Aussie here. Tim Minchin is just so brilliant. I've a DVD called 'Are You Ready For This'. Possibly his first major show.
Yes, he's outspoken but intelligently so. However he was chosen to write the music to 'Matilda: The Musical'. His name was mentioned to the producers as a possibility, so they went to his show. Now, they could easily see he was smart, funny and a brilliant pianist but we're worried he was too 'brash' to write for a kid's musical..... that was before his encore where he sang 'White Wine in the Sun'. Consistently voted the best Australian Christmas song from so many demographics. I could go on about his work but he gave a graduation speech at a Western Australian Uni where he had studied. It's HILARIOUS and shows a lot of his personality. (Plus, the 'Dean" (?) is in shot for most of it and he's trying not to laugh too much!) but it's just special and intelligent and fun with some major points within the whimsy.
ETA: The speech is called '9 Life Lessons'.
"Ready for this" is Tim Minchins 3rd major live show. His first one was "Darkside" and his second one was "So Rock". Darkside is the show that gave him his breakthrough which he perfected over several years before being discovered and it brought him to Edinbourgh Fringe festival where he won best newcomer with Darkside. So Rock was a somewhat hastily written follow up that was a bit more hit or miss whereas "Ready For This" is more thoroughly developed.
White Wine in the Sun makes me cry. You have one of the smartest comedians I've ever seen. I hope you're doing well 2 yrs later. Have a glass and love your family. :)
No, he did not finish on "It's a miracle", that was when the video was cut. What he said was something along the lines of:
"It's a miracle. I just like you to know I've buggered up the lyrics to that song in some of the worlds greatest venues, I've blew it with the Sidney Symphony at the Sidney Opera House, I blew it here last night, and I just wanna thank you for being here to whitens me not fucking up that song."
Sidney?? 😂
@@Dr_KAP well, that's what he said...
@@sim87sim - he probably said Sydney ...
@@sapphoculloden5215 glad my dyslexia can amuse people! :)
@@sim87sim - thanks for taking it in good part!
I was just explaining the confusion, though. Misspelling Sydney isn't uncommon, really, around the world.
White Wine in the Sun by Tim is really beautiful. He also wrote the huge hit theatre musical Matilda.
White Wine in the Sun makes me cry every time
The music style is a type of Samba. Tim is incredibly talented, intelligent and funny, with a very Australian sense of humour. Some of my favourites are White wine in the sun, the pope song, Storm, Rock n Roll nerd, not perfect, if I didn't have you and lullaby
Did you mean SAMba?
Daniel, Tim Minchin is an incredibly talented musician/comedian and you can see why his material would be seen as a 'slight' to many conservatives and blasphemous. However, to me it is brilliant sarcasm that is missing from this world....something that English comedians could deliver in spades. Thank you for showing it and you should explore Tim's work more.
Agreed, granted Minchin is Australian ;)
@@CaelenSawyers Yes, but he was born in Britain and has duel passports. However, I was eluding to the fact that this humour is missing now, especially on screen, because of ratings and censorship.
*cracks knucles*
Prejudice, Storm, Rock and Roll Nerd, Confessions, The Fence, Lullaby, 15 Minutes, If I Didn't Have You, Fuck the Poor, 3 Minute Song, Song for Wossy, 10 Foot Cock and a Few Hundred Virgins...
Those are just a start. Really you can't go wrong with anything but those will give you a good idea of the range of humor and sarcasm he employed. He went on to write the books for a few Broadway shows (Matilda and Ground Hog's Day) and also killed it playing Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. He's back to recording but his latest stuff is much more mellow and not as biting, though there are a few gems in there.
You have to check out Storm, a 9 minute beat poem, I prefer the live version over the animation because I'm just enamored by his persona. He's also a classicly trained musician with an amazing voice. As already mentioned below, his role as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar is crazy great. BTW, if you've never listened to that album, you would love it. Some of the best music ever written.
Saw Tim live a couple of times, will remember it forever. His shows sell out in minutes. He is an exceptional musician, lyricist and comedian but above all very, very smart and aware of the world. Prejudice, Rocknroll Nerd, Confessions, Not perfect... so many amazing songs to choose from. Great to see people discovering Tim and enjoying/agreeing with him, gives me hope for this world! Thank you for reacting :)
I loved Tim Minchin. I’ve been listening to him for 20 years or so. A genius and a legend.
Tim is a very talented man apart from his stand-up and comedy Tim is the composer and lyricist of two hit West End (London) & Broadway musicals, Matilda and Groundhog Day, both of which won the Olivier Award for Best West End Musical and got nominations for Best Score and Musical in Broadway`s Tony Awards, the man is a genius, he also wrote the music for the whole orchestra in this video....Absolutely Brilliant, peace and love to you from Ireland brother man..
Two words - "Dark Side" - Among Tim's best. His vocal changes - Wow ! There is also another where he has written a poem about his anger issues and basically has turrets reading it. Hysterical - called "Angry [ feet ] " I have watched so many times and still cry with laughter every time, & Dark Side is just amazing !
And be sure to watch the “awesome version” if you want to see more of Tim’s amazing piano playing.
@@kennygregrich5375 I have and it is !!!!!!
He's recently released a studio album. It's less comedic than most of his older stuff, but it's beautiful and excellent. That said, a good few of the older songs are also serious, such as White Wine in the Sun, Beauty, and Not Perfect.
In addition to the songs others have recommended, see also:
- Lullaby
- If You Open Your Mind Too Much Your Brains Will Fall Out (Take My Wife)
- If I Didn't Have You + My Wife's Humour
- You Grew On Me
Pretty much anything in Tim's back catalogue. The songs he's written in the past couple of years have tended to be more heartfelt.
Tim is brilliant, have followed his career for years. There is a special genius to the crafting of his material , plus he is a great piano player. Not real big on foot ware promotion.
Not sure , but I think it's a form of salsa.
There is that 1 song that requires a boot
Important: get into Tim's lovely, silly, poignant satire (and blistering piano) with "Prejudice", "Dark Side", "Cont", "Peace Anthem for Palestine", "Pope Song"; then, and only then, quietly listen to "White Wine in the Sun" and have your heart wrenched twice in one song.
I'd never heard of him. Loved it!!!
Minchin is a genius. Not his best video, but so pleased you found him. We are legion!
'Not Perfect' is pretty amazing.
My favorite of his is “Not Perfect” it is a less controversial subject and more musical. BTW Tim composed the Broadway musical Matilda.
Oh and Bears don’t dig on dancing
He's really good. Here I sit behind my computer, middle of the night, grinning like an idiot.
Another good musical comedian you might want to look into is Tom Lehrer, another very interesting person.
It's always good to see intelligent people discover Tim
I haven't seen Tim Minchin in a long time. Hadn't seen this one. This was brilliant. Thanks, DS9.
It’s from his orchestra shows can be seen on Netflix I only just watched it yesterday lol
Tim is a brilliant musician, and composer as well as comedian. Beyond his comedy, you should check out his performance in the role of Judas Iscariot in Jesus Christ Superstar. But for now, songs worthy of reaction: The Pope Song, White Wine In The Sun, (one of my favorite Christmas songs written by an atheist), Prejudice, If I Didn't Have You, Woody Allen Jesus, Rock And Roll Nerd, Not Perfect, & Confessions.
Re: musical style: It seems to borrow the riff from "Aquarela do Brasil" which wikipedia tells me is "exaltation samba".
For Minchin, everything he's ever done. But here's a selection that I recognize:
If You Really Loved Me
Not Perfect
If I Didn't Have You
Rock 'n' Roll Nerd
Storm
White Wine in the Sun
Confessions
Cont is another good one.
Inflatable You is a banger too
Finally "If you really loved me ". The best version is from the Montreal comedy festival. He is wearing a black shirt. It's not easy to find.
Loved your reaction!! I hope you do more of Tim. He is hilarious
Thank you SO much for doing this one! I wish more folks would. Great reaction and I hope you enjoy even more of his genius!
The Universe just introduced me to him last year. I was a bit pissed it waited so long, now I am grateful!
His final comment of "It's a miracle" is cut off. You can hear the entire comment on the Netflix offering "Tim Minchin and the Heritage Orchestra", where he continues to talk about how that's the first time he's ever actually played the song live without "cocking it up".
Love watching people discover Tim Minchin from his early comic work in small venues up to some of the worlds most prestigious. His plethora of work includes Judas (Jesus Christ Superstar), Atticus Fetch (Californication), two award winning musicals (Matilda & Groundhog day), amazing TV series (Upright), many great interviews & discussions eg: Tim Minchin and Richard Dawkins in Conversation and his most recent album "Apart Together" (not comedic but still wonderful)! Enjoy the Tim Minchin rabbit hole!
Tim Minchin is pure genius! So glad you found him.
That whole concert you just saw together with the Heritage orchestra is amazing. Musically I love the 'Cheese' song, lyrically my favorite is 'The Fence'. Both not many reactions yet. 'The Good Book' would be my suggestion if you want more about atheism. Lot of witty lyrics and good piano all around though, can't really go wrong.
'Perfect' is probably his breakthrough song that is actually very wholesome and beautiful, so as a comedian he surprised people that way too.
The man is so talented. Comedian, songwriter, actor, pianist, and not a bad singer. Check his performance as Judas in the arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. He is a very intelligent and well spoken gentleman in interviews. There are a couple college graduation speeches that he gave floating around on UA-cam as well that are good. Like George Carlin, he has a good grasp on the use of words and language. The use of the cuss words are intentional to make a point and are not just thrown in for cheap laughs. The song "Prejudice" is genius on several levels. For a beautiful, serious song try Carry You from his TV series, Upright. So many songs to chose from really.
Check out vids of his "Prejudice" and "If I didn't have you". Both most unexpected, and musically wondrous, like this, which I had not heard before, so thanks, again.
Confessions, Predudice, Storm, The Pope Song, If I Didn't Have You, White Wine in the Sun… there are loads of other really great songs where this came from
Tim wrote the musical Matilda and is doing Ground Hog day starting in Australia in 2 weeks before going to the UK.
“Prejudice” is worth your time for the piano work alone. 👍
Check out his "Dark Side" or "Rock and Roll Nerd". "White Wine in The Sun" is also a great one to show his sentimental side. He won't disappoint you! Welcome to the world of Tim. On the other side of this he wrote the musical score to Matilda, a children's play which has become a smash hit. You may want to check out his address to the university he attend. I'll see if I can find the link. (My link is disappearing, so, it's called 9 Life Lessons. Do the 18:17 version, his accolades are astonishing. Just a bit more background on this talented musician! )
This was hilarious; thanks for introducing me to this comedian. I googled and found the song "Aquarela do Brasil" (aka just "Brazil") upon which this is apparently based, and its style is Samba.
For a similar type of comedy, I recommend Tom Lehrer. "The Vatican Rag" is a good starting point. It's about the "Vatican II" council in 1965 where the Catholic church made many rule changes to help make itself more... accessible? commercial? something like that... Others - "The Folk Song Army", "National Brotherhood Week", and sadly, "I wanna go back to Dixie" - still seem relevant today.
Imagine being 'Sam' and getting Tim Minchin and an orchestra as a burn. Hilarious!
So Glad you finally found Tim Minchin! You really can't go wrong with any of his stuff. He is so meticulous, and because the music and orchestration have to be worked on so long, you know that every detail gets worked out. There's nothing sloppy. There's nothing wasted.
And we can't underestimate his brilliance as a musician. It's easy to get lost in the comedy and forget that he is a top notch musician. He's not just a comedian who does music; he's a musician who does comedy.
You should check out some of Monty Python's songs. They can be equally scathing.
White Wine in the Sun, his ANIMATED (music video) SOOOOOO Perfect, and many peoples favorite
I love Tim Minchin. He's hilarious and talented as a musician.
Try some of those:
Tim Minchin - Storm(9 minute beat poem)
Tim Minchin - Prejudice
Tim Minchin - Rock and Roll Nerd
Tim Minchin - The Pope song
Tim Minchin - Lullaby
And from some of his more serious and less funny songs:
Tim Minchin - White wine in the sun (my personal favorite Christmas Song)
Tim Minchin - Not Perfect
He also wrote the music and songs to the Matilda musical. If you like this type of performances there are probably some on youtube you can react to("When I grow up", "Naughty", "Revolting children")
Tim really is fantastic.
On the full concert, he doesn't end it just on "It's a micracle!", it's much better in my opinion. This is roughly what he says: "It's a miracle. I have messed that up in some of the greatest concert halls in the world. I messed it up in the Sydney Opera House; I messed it up here last night. I just want to thank you for being here to witness me *not* fucking up that song!" 🤣
Check out the full version of "Lullaby" from the same concert. So sweet and loving about his adopted daughter.
Tim is a pretty famous atheist. He and Ricky Gervais got into a fairly contentious twitter exchange recently about bullfighting. He sang Judas Iscariot in Jesus Christ Superstar Arena version in 2013.
He has written 2 musicals Matilda and Groundhog Day. Lin Manuel Miranda presented Tim with the Olivier award Matilda. It received 7 Olivers a record at the time and is now tied with Hamilton which has also received 7.
Matilda received 4 Tony Awards and is set to be released as a movie next year.
Definitely an adult humor performer. "Prejudice" is a very famous bit of his. He also is an actor and has been on television in the series Californication and most recently in Upright an Australian production and plays Friar Tuck in the 2018 Robin Hood. Busy guy.
Did you catch his exchange with God’s twitter account about goats?
He really is a great talent
Im always happy to see a resident of North America educating themselves.
Tim Minchin is a composer and lyricist who fell into comedy as a way of making a living. He has written some diverse and stunning music. Worth every moment of careful listening.
A Fantastic Aussie! Such a talented man :)
Tim is great, would love to see you react to more from him.
I've always thought that the music is "calypso" style/genre... at least during parts of it especially the beginning of the sarcastic part right after the final, "THANK YOU GOD!"
Doesn't look like anyone answered your question about the musical style of this song when the band comes in - it's written as a Bossa Nova orchestrated in a Jazz Big-Band style, but with parts arranged for the whole orchestra. Hope that helps!!
Welcome to the ones-who-just-discovered-Tim-Minchin hood
Please please please white wine in the sun. Get your tissues ready, seriously! I’m so glad I came across your channel. sending love to you and yours from Orlando Florida
Any of these you will enjoy; Prejudice, Dark side (Awesome version), Grew on you, Confessions, Rock and Roll Nerd, White wine in the sun, Inflatable you, Pope song, Lullaby, Not perfect, Storm and Mitsubishi Colt and 3 minute song
Mitsubishi Colt is underestimated just like "Some people have it worse than I ".
This was great I wish the volume was a little higher on his performance though but it was fun.
Hope you show us more.
Tim Munching extremely talented musician written the musical Matilda. Was told off for asking you to listen to Tom Lehrer saying you were too young that was last year. Please try him.
If you ever react to the song "If I Didn't Have You" you should also include a video called "wife's humour and dark humour", which is a stand-up section which follows that song.
Hahahah you said OH NO and I had a good belly laugh!
It's not corny it's just too cerebral for many folks
Wait…someone called it corny??? I haven’t listened to the reaction yet but that is most definitely NOT a word I’d use to describe the brilliance of the lyrics in this song
Such a genius. He also wrote the music for the Matilda The Musical and Groundhog Day The Musical, and was great as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. I was lucky enough to see him live once at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. I cry laughed the entire evening, my sides were so sore the next day. Honestly any of his songs are great. I especially enjoy Prejudice, Darkside, Rock and Roll Nerd and Not Perfect. He also has a nine and a half minute beat poem called Storm which is so much better than it sounds haha.
Best Storm from Reason Rally.
Dark Side (Awesome Version) is brilliant musically, and comedically. I think you'd also love the gentle comedy and human philosophy of the ballad Not Perfect. And his Christmas ballad, also sweet, serious, loving, and gently funny, White Wine in the Sun. There's so many. Just set up a reaction anytime you want to listen to something by him. Storm is also scathing like Thank You God.
Recommendations for more Tim: Prejudice, Rock and Roll Nerd, If I Didn’t Have You
Tim minchin "Storm the animation" is absolutely brilliant!
Listening to this I realised I am na atheist and said it aloud for the first time. It took thirty years to admit it. Thank you Tim :)
Apart Together his 2020 album is wonderful. Along with Carry You and Airplane from the Upright! TV series ❤❤❤
Good catch on "witnessing a first-person account".
I love your "Oh no..." :D
A samba for Sam!!! He's insanely amazing.
Turn it up
Thank you for the video! You should really watch a long version of "If I didn't have you"! Hilarious
If I understand correctly Bo even mentiones Tim Minchin as one of his biggest inspirations.
FYI: It's a Samba 😉😘
Tim Minchin is brilliant. Look at his earlier work eg " Prejudice" and " inflatable you".
That's the tango and Tim is the best, in my humble opinion. 😉
The Royal Albert Hall is such an amazing venue. :)
It's really cool done with the story telling and musical like scenario. He's quite entertaining. His look is interesting too. Sounds like a nice samba!I don't put much trust in organized religion either.
It’s like he rapping!
Bo lists Tim as one of his inspirations. Tim is insanely talented and an Aussie treasure.
I absolutely love Tim’s early stuff but I really hope you react to his new stuff ‘Apart Together’
Prejudice (which follows the same misdirection)
And the pope song are his most popular along with thank you god.
"It's a miracle" is because this was the first time he got through the whole bit without a mistake
If you haven't tried him yet I can thoroughly recommend Bill Bailey. Both a comedic & musical genius - he really is, no exaggeration. Brief example of his musicianship:
ua-cam.com/video/jPiW3V7ZJkY/v-deo.html
The "miracle" incompletely referenced at the close is his admission that it's the first time he didn't fumble ANY of the lyrics.
Please respond to "Cont" or "The Fence" or "White Wine in the Sun" or "Not Perfect" or "Confessions" or ...
I see a lot of Tim Minchin fans here, mentioning a lot of his great songs. One song that I somehow missed, mostly because I've never seen him live, and it's not reacted to a lot, there's only one youtube posting of it, without video, is Cont. If you have not heard Cont, do yourself a favour and go listen now.
I was pushing for Minchin's White Wine in the Sun in the call out for songs during last year's Christmas season playlist. Maybe this year. )
Talent. And careful what you wish for Daniel. 😱
This man's pupils are wider than I have ever seen.
Definitely White Wine in the Sun during the Christmas season. Also, there was musician in the... 60s maybe? Tom Lehrer, famous for Song for World War III, and the Vatican Rag.
For a totally different Tim Minchin song, watch "White Wine in the Sun"
Stephen Lynch is also a guy worth checking out..
Storm is a must
He’s absolutely brilliant, check out his song “the Pope song”
he also wrote tge music for the musical matilda and groundhog day which are both amazing
YOU are thee ONLY one I can find to react to the PROPER extended version. It leads and is important to the song. Nailed it! Subscribing NOW!
Welcome to the channel:) I was just thinking about doing more of Minchin's work, any suggestions?
@@DiconDissectionalReactions YES! The animated music video of his song “White Wine in the Sun.” Or his “9 life lessons commencement speech “ 😁
If you do The Pope Song beware the language, its funny but he does not hold back as you have guessed Tim is a strong Atheist. He is very famous, he acts as well. Come Home Cardinal Pell is a good one.
Please react to more Tim Minchin!
Minchin is an incredibly talented guy. He wrote the music and lyrics for Matilda - The Musical, (any of which are worth checking out).
Everything he does is brilliant, but my favorite Tim Minchin song is beautiful and sweet, and also my favorite Christmas song. Check out White Wine in the Sun.
I agree, I love musical comedy. If someone is good at it, like Tim and Bo, you realize just what talent really is! Mu reccomendation is Prejudice . You won't be sorry!
