Tim Minchin is brilliant. He is a composer, actor, comedian, and writer. Anything he does he does with creativity and enthusiasm. I didn't know what the word "polymath" meant until I became a Tim fan..(It means that you're good at multiple things.) Among my favorite Tim "songs" is 'Storm," which he describes as "a 9 1/2 minute beat poem about critical thinking." When the audience laughs at that description, he responds, "Yes, that would be funny if it weren't true." In actuality, it is both true AND funny!
Great reaction guys, you paid great attention! The song is called prejudice and we pre judged what the word was going to be! Very clever stuff from Tim and funny too. Basically saying don't be racist without saying it
Great to hear two intelligent young people discover and appreciate Tim Minchin. Most of his songs have two levels. "White wine in the sun" "If I didn't have you"
Oh yes we eat ginger nuts over here too! They do go great with a nice cuppa tea! I like how he was able to use the biscuits as a double meaning in the song misdirecting us yet again, very clever with his words and building up the audiences expectations making us think he's about to say something that he's not
Love Tim Minchin - check out "If' I didn't have you" (full version) followed up by Lullaby if you have kids. Hilarious! He is so intelligent - he made a great speech 9 lessons in life - well worth seeing.
Tim great at misdirecting listeners in his songs, Thank you God and Confessions are other examples where he does this. Should check out Dark side for Tim's insane piano skill mixed with comedy.
The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts has got to be proud of this student. The man is a genius. He has also stuck it to . Have a look at "Come Home (Cardinal Pell)" to see what he thinks of the church. He doesn't hold back.
I loved, loved, his role on Californication season 6. Didn’t know who he was at the time of airing, but was an instant fan. Imagine my surprise finding out after researching that he wasn’t just another good comedic actor, but a talented musical comic.
Tim is a genius word smith and musician. He wrote the music and lyrics for the musical Matilda. You'll love his 9 and a half minute beat poem "Storm". "Lullaby" is another hilarious song that parents can relate to.
He's got quite a few good ones about serious topics, even if it's not neccessarily social issues. "The pope song" is really good, the normal version is better than the symphony version I would say there. "Storm" is really good also, the live version is better than the animated one. "Thank you god", the symhony version, is amazing. All of them are both very serious and extremely funny at the same time. Not an easy combination. :)
When I was growing up in the 80s, people with red hair definitely got made fun of. I don't remember anyone using the word ginger at that time. But, yeah, red heads definitely did have a bit of a rough time.
His "costume " is based on Quinton Blakes illustrations in Roald Dahl novels. And he is helping us all see our own "pre judging"...with clever language ❤
Hey guys, just found your channel a couple days ago and wanted to say I'm really enjoying the reactions. I've been a huge fan of Tim Minchin my whole life so I'd recommend all of his stuff but I really think you guys would love 'Storm'. Also would love to see a reaction to 'Aeroplane', Tims newer stuff is less comedy but he has some amazing music. Thanks and keep creating. :)
I was in the UK during the 1986/87 election campaign and was absolutely astounded by the way the Thatcherites flung the fact of his red-headedness at Neil Kinnock as an insult. Implications of descent from shiftless/ thieving Scots & Irish travellers
The way he plays with his audience, leading everyone's thoughts to that word... Taking he's sweet time with it too, is so uncomfortable. First time I heard it I was like "Oh no, wtf are you doing?!" 🤣
This song is absolutely about both words tbh. Even as a non-Brit I know that gingers were traditionally bullied in your country. I have ginger genes but they are latent in me but my kids can be ginger. My sister and my mother are/were ginger and the ginger hair color can skip generations.
Yup, I feel like it's about both even if the ginger part might a bit tongue in a cheek. As a ginger I was bullied pretty intensely and was even a target of certain ridiculous, well, prejudices (heard about not having a soul, being always angry, etc. etc.) Glad I wasn't born in a time when we were at high risk of getting burned at the stake.
Agree with all the other recommendations on here but would add Darkside for absolute piano genius 😂❤ and fantastic reaction as others have said you astutely recognised the song was relevant for both words throughout ❤
It makes you think, and you think it's going in one direction. And then your thinking get's subverted, but we start thinking about language and how we use it. It's clever and anything that makes people think, and can have a conversation, has got to be better than the hysteria we have these days.
There's actually quite a bit of bullying of ginger kids in UK and Australia. More so before and mostly among kids. Obviously nothing like the racism against people of African descent which is part of the humor of the song. But every insult mentioned in the song is apparently something that he has personally been called at some point. And yeah obviously the whole point of the song is to talk about the other word without talking about it because that's not really his place to do 😊
Tim as an Australian has a lot of references to slang that is not widely known outside of Oz, eg Ginger nut dunk in my tea ... is a Ginger nut biscuit (cookie) that are really hard and so often we hold half in a cup of tea or coffee for just 10-20 seconds to slightly soften.
He's a middle aged white guy - he has no right to tell people they shouldn't use the "N" just because people of color do....but it's what he believes, so he gets everyone thinking it's the "N" word he's talking about & then drops the Ginger bomb. Brilliant misdirection & thought provoking switch around. Notice at the start the back lighting is blue & Tim seems to have brown hair - when he says Ginger, it turns to a red hue & you see he is a Ginger himself.....superb use of visual affects.
I'm not so sure that it's about discouraging use of the word as encouraging people to think about how they use words and whether there should be taboos. I believe the song was written following criticism that Tim had received for using the N word in a routine, despite the fact that he was talking about the word and not using it in a derogatory manner.. Somewhat stung by such criticism, he then realised that the G word was an anagram of the N word and wrote the song pretty quickly.

this is one of my favorites to watch reactions to. you two are perfect!! your questions at the end prompted me to do a search - there's a Red Ginger in Malaysia, and Britain started colonies there in 19th century - that may be where it comes from. They have a bright red flower, but i don't think they are closely related to ginger root. (Alpinia purpurata is red ginger, where Zingiber officinale is regular ginger)
I've heard at least a dozen reactions to this video, and this is my favorite. As the top comment says you nailed it with your analysis that he was absolutely not talking about his own humiliation growing up with red hair--My best friend from 8 years old until well into college was very much steeped in Irish culture and had "red" hair and some freckles, and the worry came up at such a young age, that I was told soon after becoming friends that he was "Strawberry Blonde". And your reaction at about 9:00 when he drops the hard G was pretty much my own (white Western European, four generations in the U.S.) reaction, where I sort of cricked my neck and paused to reflect that he was clearly talking about White Culture attempting for hundreds of years to gentrify and distort history. And then again, when he says "only a ninja can sneak up on another ninja" your reactions like mine were perfect. And the way the hold "n" on ninja just long enough that you think he's going a different way is brilliant, subtle and I don't think all that many people catch it. So Bravo! And anyone who reads this far down should watch "Rock n Roll Nerd, the Tim Minchin Story", and see Matilda the musical and if you can stream Upright. And please do another Tim song (ideally either Darkside the awesome version, or Lullaby). Thanks for reading!
99% of people get this within 10 seconds. This lady took over 5 minutes. Then when the word ginger was sung she still had to have it spelled out. Sorry, can't watch anymore. I do hope you do well though.
I courted a Lass who was Ginger soon Found out it was Red head or Celtic heritage. or my health was risk .Still got fond memories of my Little Fire brand. She only 4ft 11 but i swear she could jump 6ft high. 😮
I have been referred as "a blond", as if that single feature is an entire description of me as a person. It used to bother me, when I was a teen, because of the stereotype of the dumb blond. But I was dumb, actually. Not because I was blond, but because I was young and the world was still new and unexplored.

super late, and you may have already done it, but Tim Minchin's song "Confessions" is super great, and also addresses serious issues via comedy. Also "The Pope Song", though that one has to be viewed with the context of the time it came out (right after it was revealed the pope had covered for and protected pedophiles)
I'm not sure if other white people hear the same thing i do, but to me, he puts being put as an "other" by peers into a very relevant context and shows us " did you like that?" and he can make us feel comfortable about laughing about the miserable common human experience and make us feel closer because of our shared pained laughs that we can share. For me those words were more "weird" and "freak" but the common experience of being excluded is more human than enough of us realize
He wrote the music & lyrics for Matilda The Musical thats been on in London's West End for nearly a decade. And Emma Thompson is in the movie musical. He was onstage with Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Andrew Lloyd Webber & the then Prince Charles ran onstage to deliver the line "To be, or not to be, that is the question"
Thanks for the recommendation Paul! Our reaction to "The Pope" will be dropping in the next 2 days, appreciate you checking out the channel and dropping a comment, we'll definately check out Dark Side Orchestra version next!
This song is actually about racism and the n word. Tim knew that he could not stand up and sing about racism and not turn audiences (predominantly white) off about his message. So he uses musical, intelligent comedy that portrays the message in a way that intelligent people could maybe get.......
This was much fun to watch. If you like to watch reactions yourself, you should watch Black Pegasus reaction to this Song, took him a while to realize what the Song is about and has a perfect funny Twist in the end. Keep Up the awesome content. ❤
All of Tim Minchins stuff is great and normally very clever. It's not one I would normally point people to, but just because you mentioned separating his brain for singing vs playing and key changes, I think you would have fun with 'F#'
You don't know how profound and mind-opening your reaction is for me! I always ask myself why "black people don't want to be called the N word, then why do they call each other with that word?" Seeing you both avoiding not saying the G word and at least respecting his wish not to be called one(I know its only parody), I realized that if black people avoid this "non-racist" G word, then why can't everybody else avoid the N word and give the respect black people absolutely deserve? This should be seen by all people on earth to stop racism esp. in America.
Yeah for me I just wouldn't use the N word, even if I was 100% black I wouldn't use it, I don't see to what benefit using such a word would bring, especially that being a word to degrade black people during the worst time of their history, knowing how it was used I wouldn't want to refer to a friend nor an enemy as such a word, so to embrace such a word for only certain parties to use and then punish other parties using the word doesn't make logical sense to me. We can't force people to change their vocabulary or language but we can change our own, if that perspective makes sense ? - Dayle (Brother on the left)
If you want to see more (well, probably the most show-off version) of Tim's piano skills, watch Tim Minchin, "The dark side" and I suggest, you react to "the awesome version" ua-cam.com/video/3xQmJ_vxHB4/v-deo.htmlsi=uh5RC4a7iCqEpjYq
Hey you guys he had me some time ago. I thought what ..Then had me Rolling about Laughing. Seen some more of his songs they are really Funny as well .Like your reaction videos .1st came across Ren reaction..
@RNDContent Hiya just been remembering something you might find Funny I'm the Guy who courted a Girl who was Ginger. But told me she was a Red head or of Celtic heritage. Quite strong on it .Well I found it funny. Because my Father is Scottish from Paisley near Glasgow. So I invited her for Sunday dinner. My Father had a really broad Scottish accent. Met my mother in the RAF in 1947 .he was a PTI instructor. Used to play Ice hockey for one the Glasgow teams .we lived in Derbyshire England. We went for Sunday dinner. We'll I'll never forget when I introduced her to my Celtic Dad .Real Loch Ness monster wrestling dad .Anyway the look on her Face and responce I couldn't take the piss .don't think she'd been North of Scarborough.
It's interesting to find that people in countries other than the US have trouble figuring out what other word he's spelling, whereas its so ingrained in us that we pick it up immediately because its a part of our social fabric. A horrid, negligent word used only for abuse, but so prevalent in common understanding here in the states. Ninja edit: i don't know the etymology of the word, but it feeeeeels american.
I do wonder about the origin of that word as well. The closest thing I’ve heard to it, is an Ethiopian word called “Negus” which means “King” "- was a hereditary ruler of one of Ethiopia's larger provinces, over whom collectively the monarch ruled, thus justifying his imperial title. The word sounds awfully similar to n*ggers, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was used by slave masters and such as a way to degrade the slaves status in society. Other than that it could come from the word “Niger” which is Latin for black and also the name of a country in Africa.
I absolutely love the fact that you don’t feel you can say “ginger” and use the epithet “g-word” whilst reviewing this. It is indicative of the non-offence culture and exactly what the song is ridiculing. I don’t mean to offend in any way because I quite enjoyed the reaction and I find myself liking you both. By the way, if that was intended as humour by you, fair play. This is the first time I’ve visited this channel. Peace.
Haha this video really did have me tip toeing around the word "ginger", it's brilliantly clever, hopefully we see you again in future Tim Minchin reactions (we're very overdue for another one!) Thanks for stopping by the channel Robert
I'm pretty sure the song isn't about "ridiculing the non-offence culture". I'll leave a quote from Tim here: "We must think critically, and not just about the ideas of others. Be hard on your beliefs, take them out on the veranda and hit them with a cricket bat. Be intellectually rigorous, identify your biases, your prejudices, your privileges."

Love tim. If you check out his latest stuff he doesnt do a lot of comedy anymore but even hus serious music is brilliant
Here in Australia, red heads are often called Bluey.
How many song writers are able to include words like gingivitis and homophone? Let alone play jazz and do fast wordplay.
2:18 when you tryna pretend you can spell
12:30 I’ve heard of the term tampon used in the school yard.
For sheer musical virtuosity i'd recommend "Dark Side". There are two versions, the best of which is with a full orchestra.
I definitely got offended when a black guy called me, a white guy, the n word at work.
Thank you god and the pope song are two of his best.
This was much fun to watch. If you like to watch reactions yourself, you should watch Black Pegasus reaction to this Song, took him a while to realize what the Song is about and has a perfect funny Twist in the end. Keep Up the awesome content. ❤
Tim monchin uva college speech
All of Tim Minchins stuff is great and normally very clever. It's not one I would normally point people to, but just because you mentioned separating his brain for singing vs playing and key changes, I think you would have fun with 'F#'
wow
I like the "Only a ni..nja can sneak up on another ninja"
Like yeah nice save mate 😅
Great reaction. You should check out storm next. It's a beat poem. Funny as hell.
Storm ...
Things have got better in the UK but when I grew up in the 70s and 80s being ginger meant a daily battle. It was horrible.
I love the way you don’t get it,
Even though you get it 🥺
You don't know how profound and mind-opening your reaction is for me!
If you want to see more (well, probably the most show-off version) of Tim's piano skills, watch Tim Minchin, "The dark side" and I suggest, you react to "the awesome version"

Hey you guys he had me some time ago. I thought what ..Then had me Rolling about Laughing. Seen some more of his songs they are really Funny as well .Like your reaction videos .1st came across Ren reaction..
Legend! We're glad you returned!
My favorite tim minchin song is not perfect
This misdirect is real! Lol
Tim minchin on offensive language is him saying it's not just any word but how you use them
How can you not work out a word with just 6 letters?
I know. Watching people take so long to let the penny drop makes me sad for humanity.
W reaction from y'all❤
Ren - depression

What part of England are you guys from because I speak English and I can't understand a single word you guys are saying
It's all about context. I could call you a genius and it could be an insult.

Have you seen Lullaby yet?
We have not seen that one yet, we can check that one out
@@RNDReacts brace yourself haha 😂 one of my favourites!
I know this is out of context but you are both beautiful, inside and out 😊
