    Spoiler alert:
    His name is *DEVILMAN.*
How a story like this could be made into torture porn with zero ties to Devilman in the OVA series is beyond me.

the torture porn is still there in the manga though. I think the issues with the OVAs lie more in subtler changes; I think their horribleness is hugely exaggerated by very sensitive people but they're also not quite great.

I watched the OVA years ago and then read the Manga. It's brutal and that's an understatement. It's definitely the godfather of all ultra violent manga and anime with Jack serving as the inspiration for a lot of anti heroes like Guts and Kenshiro, although unlike them he's not a hero in any sense and has very little redeeming qualities. Dude's just a straight up animal who only lives to fight and kill and he doesn't care about collateral damage or the people who end up getting caught in the way. It's kind of awesome in an over the top way.

@@basementofmars1963 I love that about Jack-- given who he actually was once, it makes sense he starts at that point.
The contrast with Shin Violence Jack (where someone ELSE takes up the role of Jack and it makes sense if you've seen Devilman Saga (or the spinoff by the same mangaka as Devilman Strange Days) is actually a pretty genius narrative move from Go Nagai that fits right in with the themes he sets up in Devilman and in Saga respectively.
(I'm trying to dodge probable identity spoilers pretty hard... Sorry if I failed!)

    • @SaitohYatate

There's a slight divide amongst fans about Jack's portrayal throughout the manga. Some prefer the kill-'em-all psycho from the first chapters who would kill anyone, even innocent hostages. Others prefer Jack's latter portrayal of an all-knowing force of nature who appears when needed to help out the arc's central character.
In my opinion, I prefer the latter one. Because Jack's original identity was given a second chance and became able to overcome the limitations of both humans and demons through sheer spiritual power.
Like Mad Max, Violence Jack is more of a POV character. The real protagonists are Ryuu Takuma, Tenma and each consecutive arc's designated heroes.

And then is when I started ton read the manga, and, oh god...it sure was a crazy read. While there are some points that I didn't like about it, there were others that I totally loved. It takes 10 Settlers to farm for every 1 Guard you have.
Raiders do not last. They die for stupid reasons & eventually they weaken & age. Settlements (that endure) remain after Warlords perish.
Mad Max was a warning. Don't be a Raider. Be a Minuteman.
We are stronger when we work together for the benefit for all.
Ultimately, more farmers is better for everyone, but if you're farming you have no time for Guard Patrols & Night-watch.

I compare this manga to One Punch Man in terms of storytelling. Of course, Saitama is the manga character of that manga, but the story can focus on other characters and other plot points, while still having an overarching story with the main character, in this case, Saitama wanting to have a real fight. Much in the same way, the main villain and antagonist of Violence Jack is the Slum King, and while that remains consistent throughout, the story can shift to show other perspectives and stories that don't focus on the main plot.
What I like most about this series, however, is the world-building aspect. A traditional post-apocalyptic story focuses mainly on the devastation and destruction of the world, and the evil gangs and warlords that come to power. While this manga certainly has that, it also introduces things that most people wouldn't initially think about. New sports played in the wasteland like Hyper-Grappling, sci-fi elements like the Iron Kaiser, and magical elements like Mido and the Fire Majin's. And of course, all of those characters and stories are from other Go Nagai works, which makes it even more impressive that can be implemented and still be lore-friendly and immersive.

The end doesn't come out of nowhere. I for one was not surprised in the least. The changing protagonists also were not jarring. Most of these Manga are alchemical works. If u know alchemy u can see its patterns in all. Even art that is not trying to be alchemical , of course

So a neat thing about violence jack is that a lot of the characters you see other than the obvious ones are also Characters that were from other go nagai works, or were later used again.
The motorcycle lady is jun hono from mazinger, and tatsuma & mondo were from another old manga of his, and were later turned into women and reused in Kotestushin Jeeg with the names Tatsuko and Monko
Seems he is a fan of osamu tezuka's Star system.

The Japanese fans actually refer to Nagai and Ishikawa's crossover properties (everything that crosses over with Devilman and Getter Robo, basically) as the "Dynamic System" for exactly the reason you pointed out.
Also Devilman Saga more or less confirms that Go Nagai's works are all part of a multiverse (with Amon possibly not being a demon, but a hyperdimensional being like the Infinitism Mazinkaiser and the Getter Emperor, that crosses into other Devilman universes to fight God...)

I always took Devilman related media with the same explanation I took the ending of Devilman: Is another timeline. God has been resseting the world over and over just to punish and fuck with Satan, is explained before, and depending of how that goes, God reshapes the world again and again, letting things happen freely. Now in Devilman Lady things really change and she has like the "best" outcome from Go Nagai stories since she tries to break the cycle in a very smart way...
Now granted I'm more Fist of the North Star fangirl cause Kenshiro is lord and saviour and is amazingly profound between the guts and blood everywhere buuuuuuut Devilman Lady deserves the most love. I think that came after someone hugged Go Nagai and reminded him the world is not THAT bad lol

As far as I know, the only way to read the manga in English is via scan translations which, sadly, are still incomplete. That's the only reason I still haven't read it myself, because I'd love to read it all in order. As for the DVD's of the anime, I say check it out if you like the super dark and sadistic old OVA's of the 80's and 90's. It gets beat up by a lot of PC people who just trash it as pure crap when clearly its their loathing of the (admittedly very offensive) subject matter driving that opinion. IMO, I really enjoyed them for what they are, absolutely brutal and oppressively dark post-apocalyptic fare. The atmosphere and world felt very intriguing to me though the whole time and I personally loved its insane, over the top nature.

I wouldn't say it didn't end conclusively since Jack took out Slum King, then Devilman took out Satan, and Jack's "chosen one" Ryu played an instrumental role in ushering in a new age. But naturally evil will never be truly defeated, so Jack's still out there somewhere. I don't really feel it's disjointed as much as episodic. There's always a very strong thematic core holding the stories together, and while I'm not sure if I prefer the Devilman twist or not based on what I've read so far... it yet again fits very well thematically because Jack shows us the world we'd end up in if we refuse to follow Devilman's teachings even when given a fresh start. Not to mention the whole series being a big Go Nagai crossover just waiting for THE Nagai series, Devilman, to make its appearance at the end - look at Japanese Wikipedia for the crossovers in every arc. It's less of a straightforward story and more like an American cartoon a la Samurai Jack, or a long-running Kazuo Koike manga; traveling to new locations and meeting new characters every arc is part of what makes it feel like a legendary quest. Jack didn't need to constantly return to Ryu because he was the one who understood his philosophy best & was already becoming a better & better leader on his own.
Even without the untranslated stuff (to English at least) the concept of existence being a "collection of ideas" thought up by powerful beings, either those living in godly or demonic realms or humans powerful enough to tap into supernatural power from the end of the Reaper Police arc & the entirety of the Hyper Grapple arc makes the twist work even better.

Man...Kanto is not a city, is a whole region of Japan. Saying the city of Kanto is like if you say "the city of California". And yes, Go Nagai have his own universe. Most of his work is connected in certain way or make references to his different histories.

At the mid-point of the story, Jack mentions that Ryu is the one who needs to defeat Slum King in order for Kanto to truly be saved.
So the Devilman ending came out of nowhere and proves that it was not something Go Nagai planned.
I still enjoyed most of the manga btw

I think that thats Rios punishment from god: be reborn in new life and ending up fighting Akira or Devilman again and again. Theres more series from Nagai Go that are just new reincarnations of Devilmen

Why people like bloody violence over the top and gore as entertainment I don't get it! I prefer standard violence like Inuyasha or Star Wars where you fight like a duel and not making it a torture, except for the cutting of the hands!

Violence Jack is one of the most epic mangas I’ve read so far!
As for the OVAs, I honestly did not like them. I did get a bit of enjoyment out of Evil Town and Hell’s Wind though since they are adaptations of my favourite arcs but they could’ve been adapted better. The only thing I liked about the OVAs the most was the voice acting (Japanese versions), music and the action.

Honestly whenever there is this whole contemplation on society and survival of the fittest it always rings sorta hollow to me. like yeah, you could call the success in these societal systems illusions but the same could be said for literally any achievement that isn't strictly on the lines of helping you breed or protect/support your progeny to have them further spread your genes. under this logic basically, 99.9% of achievements and accomplishments are irrelevant. yeah, in a harsh lawless unforgiving wasteland brutality and violence will probably reign king but we actively attempt to avoid such a world and make it more accommodating to people who arent capable or willing to commit such brutality.
