Organist Jelani Eddington and pianist David Harris play Louis Moreau Gottschalk's "Grand Tarantelle" live in concert at Grace Baptist Church, Sarasota, Florida
Truly amazing. I'm used to hearing this with full orchestra and am amazed how well it works with organ and piano. Both artists did themselves proud! Thanks so much for posting this.....
Very enjoyable! Bravo the organist especially, for sharp rythm and colorful ideas of "orchestration," and also the pianist for strong playing, quite tricky in relentless tarantella mode. A good concert piano + organ are surprisingly effective together, the piano able to cut thru the organ's volume when needed. A lovely offbeat choice, thank you!
Amazing! Gottschalk was one fantastic pianist and to see his music on organ is worth wild! I have only heard Le Banjo on organ by Diane Bish. So, this is truely remarkable. Proud to say the Gottschalk was from my home state, Louisiana.
🙏 so great to hear this beautiful music once again. Jelani and David played it in Middelburg, the Netherlands.I think that this was about thirty years ago ….. 👍👍👍
This is a marvellous , and typically bravura piece by Louis Moreau Gottschalk well played here by Jelani Eddington & David Harris - I love this splendidly over the top performance!
Thank you so much for this awesome performance. I am so happy to be able to listen again to this great masterpiece after I was stolen my CD 10 years ago. I love the interpretation too.
@robbiethemann It is the organ. The Forker Memorial Wurlitzer Organ in Grace Baptist Church is a Style 260 Special. The percussions almost always included a Harp/Marimba, Xylophone, Glockenspiel, Chrysoglott, Cathedral Chimes (24 note), and the usual toy shelf and traps.
Jelani...you ROCK! I thought I heard through the grapevine that you're scheduled to play for us again at RTOS Rochester soon? If so I'd like to respectfully request this! :) Even if you don't I'm looking forward to seeing you again anyway, you're a tough act to follow!
Robert Moehle Just down the road from me, in St Mary's Church, Warwick, lurks an original Hope-Jones console, unfortunately not connected to anything for many a year though… :-(
I've marked this as a Favorite and listen to it several times a month. It always gives me chills.

I hope that the audience at Grace Baptist Church appreciated what they heard here. How great was Gottschalk ! A fine job by both performers.
Perhaps the greatest piece of music by an American composer and superbly performed. Bravo!

Deux magnifiques interprètes servant admirablement Gottschalk. Le piano n'est pas étouffé par l'orgue : remarquable ! Encore !

do they have a percussionist or is that the zany special effects on the organ?
Not without reason is the theatre organ known, via Robert Hope-Jones's work, as a "unit orchestra."

marsvltor2 Yes indeed - that would be a marvelous thing to hear if it were hooked up to its pipes, and played ....
hmmmm... i prefer gottschalk's original version rather than Nicolás Espadero's arrangement (which this is).
