  • ►► Learn how to make any bass with my 12-Step Sound Design Bible (FREE): bit.ly/3vLlk1E. Bass is the foundation of any modern track, and in this video I show you how you can pick the perfect bass sound for your track.
Whether you are producing house, techno, trance, drum ’n’ bass - or any other genre - locking in your bass early on really helps define the vibe and direction of the track.
In this video I share my bass selection process, to take some of the guesswork out of it and speed up the whole production process.
    Here are the 7 steps:
    1. Deciding on the vibe / bass category
    2. Programming the bass line
    3. Hot-swapping the sounds
    4. A/B testing
    5. Separating the sub-bass / mid-bass
    6. Augmenting the bass
    7. Processing the bass

For me, the key point in this video is "The more music you actively listen to, the more you'll understand" and the point about 'originality'. I was able to take a lot from this. The track featured in the video, I would buy. Super great video. BTW, Will, love the facial hair.

Change simpler to sampler and change the root to match what your sample is labeled and presto. Sample is in key. Then you can even change it back to the simpler after that.

also - there's lots of conflict with advice for the bassline. Some folks say the bass should not play a melody; that's for the top line. But others say the bass should tell a story (bootsy collins). I oftentimes find my bass lines being quite intricate and doing a lot of heavy lifting for melody and that's the way I like it.
Another thing about basslines is they control the mode of the song - just moving the root note can change the feel of the song entirely

Drum and Bass, usually liquid or neuro - I adore Phase Plant. It's like having a DAW inside your DAW specifically for sound design. Personally, it greatly improved my ability to craft detailed bass as it comes with routing lanes and multiband splitting built into it. If you're already falling into the sound design pit, it's a must-own imo. (if the price puts you off you can rent to own it)

Another interesting topic for a tutorial would be "Working with voice samples" since many starting producers are limited to use those. Where to find good samples? How to embed them to your song? And most importantly: How to adjust them to fit the desired vibe, without losing the human feel of it?
Anyway, this was a great combination of tips where I nodded and thought "That's how I do it." and tips where I was surprised I didn't know them yet!

I only recently started producing music, so I am still experimenting with what I want to make. At the moment I am addicted to hardcore and hard dance music. Genres like Hardstyle, Melodic Speedcore and Frenchcore frequently feature a super distorted kick with a long tail, that also functions as the bass. Of course sometimes this effect is achieved by building the "punch" and "tail" of the kick separately and then sampling them, but it is also common to just start with a regular kick sample(usually a 909 or something similar.)

Let me ask a question about sub bass separation: What if i decided to create a straight 4x4 techno rumble kick and i wanna make it sound as fat as possible and as clean as possible before sending into the master limiter..so should i add a parallel separate sub bass channel to make kick sound fat in sub lows freq(40-55 hz)? should it be two channels: with just a kick with rumble(with cutted sub lows(40-55hz) and the second with just cutted subs...and then maybe rout them in another bus to glue together(using glue comp for example)...?

    ERS Iblit > perfecto bass.
As requested, Iblit is monophonic and a bit Moogish, but with a right PWM and combination of oscillators, can create a very controlable sub-bass layer to reinforce the existing one.
It's an old plug-in from Andreas Ersson.
I've used this little tool for years to create funk, pop, electronica, electro, progrock and hundreds of tracks.
Sometimes, i've included in tracks i received to mix on demand, creating an easier to mix low end. Results are always fine.

As a bass player since the 80's, I find this super interesting. EDM bass is such a strange beast. I'd like to work on EDM projects using "real" bass sounds (whatever it means) with the right effects added on top of it. To make it BIG, but SEXY and LIVE at the same time.

    • @ErixSamson
      @ErixSamson Рік тому

I'm especially exploring doubling my bass with VSTi instruments (Massive, Serum, Vital...), using Melodyne or VariAudio to create MIDI from my live performances. It currently forces me to simplify my bass playing, or edit the generated MIDI a lot. I'd like to find ways to make that process much simpler.

@@foodstampz Daft Punk teaches. In an interview they said that the strong sidechain compression on samples was an actual mixing error. That sidechain made their sound imprint that producers still copying nowadays. When i made Bucci Bag in 2003, was a total mess in terms of mixing but the general feeling was catchy. It became a good international hit anyway. It's the idea that counts and the general feel that a track can transmit to the listeners. No "right" no "wrong" here. Just the capacity to produce "sound feelings", and it's mostly instinctive.

    • @AutPen38

I loved 'Bucci Bag', but I'd kind of forgotten the hypnotic bass synth groove. (I just had to listen to it again and now I'm having electroclash flashbacks). The most memorable parts of that track for me were the vocal (so much attitude) and that ear-splitting snare/clap. Great track, Andrea. Straight off the plane from LA!
