Meater Plus Review/The original Meater SUCKED big-time, find out what I think of the Meater +

  • So ever since the very first Meater product was released I never had any good experiences with it. The original Meater was notorious for dropping Bluetooth signal and after numerous attempts I just lost all hope for that product.
One of my subscribers were telling me about the Meater and I found myself giving it a bad review. After a few messages I thought it would just be better if I were to buy the new Meater + and see if there has been any improvements.
This video is my first run at using the Meater +.

I think people have false expectation about Bluetooth range. It’s meant to replace a cable for a nearby device like a keyboard connected to your computer, in other words, a short range. Don’t think you can be in the next room and it will still work. Keep your block or phone or whatever right next to the grill and it should be fine.

I absolutely hate mine. It always takes me a minimum of 20 minutes to get it connected. Sometimes I can't get it connected at all and just stop worrying with it. This is what you would expect with a cheap $30 unit, not at Meater's price point. This thing is garbage

I too was at first disappointed with dropping the signal. I went back to UA-cam and checked with the factory and they used an iPad and a phone blue toothed to the Meater+. I tried the same and it worked. My cousin and I were using a Kamado Joe on a brisket. Kamados have very thick ceramic walls that might block the signal, but with the new set up I actually went 3 miles away to my cousins house while the brisket was cooking and I could monitor the ambient temperature of the cook and the internal temperature of the brisket on my cell phone..
Once I followed what the factory said to do it worked like a charm.
Today I ordered two each Meater+ as Christmas gifts for family as I strongly believe in this product.
I have cooked many times since with this product and it has never once failed to help guide my cook to perfection.
For some reason, now I only use my cell phone to monitor the cooking process without having to use the iPad.
You failed to talk about the program that Meater+ uses and they ask you to download. I also find that program to be top notch.
Thank you for your entertaining video.

I bought the block with 4 probes, off your review, I'm not having good luck with, it disconnects all the time, probe to block, I also had two probes side by side, the temp were 8 degrees difference , Not sure if i'm doing something wrong, if you have set temp , it flags you 5 degrees before and locks up, I just got this in late 2023

My Meater + keeps disconnecting. "Move the Meater Plus charger closer to the probe" I have the charger 6' away from the probe. In addition, it should have a flip timer in the software. I flip steaks, on the grill, every 2 minutes. This means I have to run Meater software AND my timer simultaneously. So, Meater keeps disconnecting, alarms keep going off for flipping, I'm flipping the steak, switching softwares, waiting for reconnection etc etc It's a complete pain in the a** adding this expensive device to what was an otherwise pleasurable experience. My Thermapen is just fine, thank you very much. Now, on longer cooks I can see the benefit. The Meater software does eventually reconnect. Then my only issue is hearing it disconnect every couple of minutes. It's annoying, but it works.

I could not get the Meater Block on a Lang Smoker. I figure the heavy duty construction and thick steel was blocking the signal. Meater should post may not work on heavy duty smokers before it is ordered. I did try to contact tech support several times with no reply and after about three days I finally got a RMA to send it back for a refund. So far I rank the product and tech support a zero !!

I am interested in getting a Meater thermometer probe. The person stated that the meat probe and the charging block work together from another review. The power block needs to be near the meat probe being used in the grill. The power block sends the signal to your device of choice. If it is connected to an iPad or a tablet on a wifi network, you can access the probe from anywhere using your phone with the Meater app if you have to leave while the meat is cooking.

    Do not trust this product. It’s over cooks 100% of the time by a significant amount. The customer service is terrible these are their actual words;
“With regards to the rest period, it is actually quite normal for the internal temperature to exceed the target. “
“Although the temperature may exceed, we do see the temperatures drop back down and the results are typically what we are looking for!”
So by their own words the cook doesn’t match the target temp. It over cooks then you let it get cold so it matches.
To give you an idea of how out. On a target temp of 63c / 145f for a pork loin. The meater will over cook it to 70c/158f

I got this product as a present for Xmas from my wife. We were both excited as we had watched a cooking show that uses this. While it is ok for smoking meat or cooking indoors it is totally useless for grilling. Most people know that wood, charcoal, and even gas grills cook at well over the 575 degree limit of the product. My gas grill cooks at 700 degrees. My wife pointed out that she often cooks roasts in the oven that start at 575 degrees and later get reduced. This product probably works well for anyone cooking below 500 degrees but for over that it will likely not work (gets high heat alert) or break the probe.

I end up removing the probe just to wrap it, and then when I stick the probe back in the general area where it was before removing, it's now reading different temps. It's very aggravating cause now I risk screwing up a huge chunk of meat. I do have other probes I stick in that connects to my grill but it's just garbage. I would like to see more detailed info on the range. I don't need the other commentary. Yes, if you cook properly to temp, you will get a great cook. I did not get the same results as you. Mine will only work if I am like two feet from the smoker.

    • @madswinebbq

Why do you feel compelled to let me know what commentary you don’t need? I made a video in my own backyard with my own time and money and you have respect the fact that there is no script in my shoots. Just pure real content. If you don’t agree with me or like my content then to be honest hit the thumbs down button and respectfully move on- don’t waste your energy trying to tell me what you can do without because all you’re doing is showing the internet how rude you are.

I’m not sure if you know but the Meater has been very temperamental with me. Sometimes it works and others it just fails to be accurate. Then other times it doesn’t want to stay connected. Personally, I just can’t stand any product that isn’t reliable. Consistency is key!

      You're on it David! 😄👍
The Meater and my MK4 Thermapen were identical as was the Bluedot. In the beginning you can see that the Meater and the Dot both started at 62°Fahrenheit. I was waiting for there to be some kind of huge gap in readings but whatever the Meater said the Thermapen echoed.

You have awful WiFi if you couldn’t get 20ft with the original. I get 35ft easy and it’s super accurate. Anytime I lose signal for roaming too far it’s fine, once I enter range again it picks up live data in real time. Not sure why the comments are being so dramatic about the range. You could’ve gotten a lemon I guess, but your experience definitely falls outside of the norm.

I can tell you that I have been using meater for a couple of years. Nothing but disconnecting problems and with brand new batteries still is never charged. I have been through the tech people at the company but they can't ever fix any problems. Last contact said to send it to them on my coin and they will look at it. I know that I will never buy a meter product again and I did try it today after charging it with a new battery for 2 days. Doesn't work. Just saying. I smoke a lot of meat, my hobby, my weakness. But will look at other companies that offer a unit that plugs in to charge. Replaceable batteries are prehistoric in this day and age. Is there a reason they couldn't just send me a new unit to see if the one I have was a faulty one. No need to give them more money for nothing. Just purchase something else. They don't seem to care. I am not bitter, just want what they promise. I don't expect this post to stay on without being deleted also. We all need the truth.
