But he did that to take Novigrad before Nilfgaard would. It was his attempt to repel the Nilfgaardians. And in the year 1276 the witch hunts end and they get disbanded.

A checkmate against HIMSELF, followed by an apt observation about the null parallelism between chess and real life, in front of a witcher and a Temerian partisan. Radovid oscillates between surrealism and brilliance.
Radovid's not mad. He's saying himself that he's talking here metaphorically if Geralt makes fun of him. His point is that real life is different from chess, with different rules and more inequalities between the "player", but he's also saying that the status of king is similar. You have a different view of the wide picture, but are surrounded by other that can block your way and lead the enemy to checkmate you. That explains his character as he's persecuting mages only to gain support from the north and making the city weaker (it's stated that when he wins the war, persecutions stop a few years later), and show the future of Emhyr who's killed by his follower in the timeline when Radovid is still alive and winning the war.
He feels very much like Radovid from Witcher 2, esp if you go the Scoia'tael route and follow the Eilhart quest path. And even in 1, he was already practicing the use of proxy factions to fight his battles. Having the pupil of Phillippa Eilhart become a paranoid, cynical egomaniac once everything goes his way - that makes a lot of sense tbh

Any chess experts here? Please confirm, did this game place the chess pieces accurately, or like most movies just put a chessboard, randomized the position of pieces, and left it there because chess is confusing?
I'm no expert, but I'll explain what Black was doing. Black had castled, which means that the King went to a corner of the board for protection. With two rooks guarding each other, there is no legal way to take one of the rooks without the other one counterattacking. So, Radovid cheated and knocked one of the rooks out of the way so he could take the other one. Because the King couldn't move out of the way (because the pawns happen to be blocking the King's path), it was checkmate. I'll also add that with that many pieces off of the board, the game was near its endpoint. The only strong piece that Radovid had was the Queen, which was also under threat by that rook. If he didn't move it, he would have lost it.

The Emperor who invades and kills and burns as part of a mad plan to be delivered to a promised ruler in prophecy. The King who grows mad and extreme that he misplaces his talence in war as if it is nothing but a game to be won. And there is also the Witchers who face the Wild Hunt bravely while the kings and emperors doing the pointless killing.
1:14 Radovid actually makes a very intriguing and revealing observation. Chess represents a very limited environment if one actually seeks to engage with true warfare and governance strategy concepts. Chess appears to be a more logical and mathematical exercise rather than anything resembling the chaotic, uncertain and nuanced nature of warfare. Just in military terms, Chess simply doesn't approach aspects such as logistics, espionage, sabotage, equipment, morale, topography, technology, weather and so on. His observations are, from my point of view, criminally underrated. Shame he's considered somewhat out of his mind in those scenes.

Just imagine what ashameful defeat Nilfgaard suffered. They lost to man they considered insane, who led what they called barbarians, and literally lost all captured territories in north. On top of that, their emperor was killed. To say that this is f$$$ed up is to say nothing.
It's shame what the dumb writers did to Radovid. He is a completely different in W3 than in previous games. They basically did the same thing to him D&D in Game of Thrones did to Stannis the Mannis in Season 5. Total character assasination.
Radovid‘s descent into madness in Witcher 3 made him more interesting than in any of the previous games in my opinion.

Radovid's not mad. He's saying himself that he's talking here metaphorically if Geralt makes fun of him.
His point is that real life is different from chess, with different rules and more inequalities between the "player", but he's also saying that the status of king is similar. You have a different view of the wide picture, but are surrounded by other that can block your way and lead the enemy to checkmate you.
That explains his character as he's persecuting mages only to gain support from the north and making the city weaker (it's stated that when he wins the war, persecutions stop a few years later), and show the future of Emhyr who's killed by his follower in the timeline when Radovid is still alive and winning the war.

In witcher 2, he removed philippa's eyes for murdering Vizimir but still sent for a trial of law against her regicide. This is also extended to sile, who was accused of the regicide of demavend.

Any chess experts here? Please confirm, did this game place the chess pieces accurately, or like most movies just put a chessboard, randomized the position of pieces, and left it there because chess is confusing?
I'm no expert, but I'll explain what Black was doing. Black had castled, which means that the King went to a corner of the board for protection. With two rooks guarding each other, there is no legal way to take one of the rooks without the other one counterattacking. So, Radovid cheated and knocked one of the rooks out of the way so he could take the other one. Because the King couldn't move out of the way (because the pawns happen to be blocking the King's path), it was checkmate. I'll also add that with that many pieces off of the board, the game was near its endpoint. The only strong piece that Radovid had was the Queen, which was also under threat by that rook. If he didn't move it, he would have lost it.

Radovid is a sad man that I do Sympathies too. I understand why he wants Mages ( especialy the fucking lodge ) gone. they are to influencial They almost remind me of the Preatorians of the Roman empire, supose to be the Emperors but they sheme and kill who ever they dont like and crown the one they do like.

1:14 Radovid actually makes a very intriguing and revealing observation. Chess represents a very limited environment if one actually seeks to engage with true warfare and governance strategy concepts. Chess appears to be a more logical and mathematical exercise rather than anything resembling the chaotic, uncertain and nuanced nature of warfare.
Just in military terms, Chess simply doesn't approach aspects such as logistics, espionage, sabotage, equipment, morale, topography, technology, weather and so on. His observations are, from my point of view, criminally underrated. Shame he's considered somewhat out of his mind in those scenes.
