  • This is a video showing TTC #2600 on Route 96 Wilson apart of the only used buses the TTC runs today. This is a 1979 GM New Look purchased by the Société de transport de Montréal or STM for short and was numbered 22-009. To prevent bus shortages the TTC purchased many New Looks retired by the STM because they retired them due to age and had similar specifications. 2600 is the prototype bus for the Ex-Montrealer rebuild and was finished in June 1999. When the TTC found many of its own buses were still in good condition for rebuild many Montreal New Looks did not get rebuild so only 20 were rebuilt. These New looks have McKay gates and standee windows which makes them different than the standard TTC New look visually. Today only 5 of the 20 are active, 2600, 2609, 2611, 2613 and 2615.
Edit October 24, 2006: 2600 has been retired in October 2006

That aong with hundreds of MontreaL fishbowls shoulda stayed here, in Montreal. The STM would have saved millions of dollars rebuilding these instead of buying shitty Nova low floors! Man I miss the old days...

So why are Quebec politicians forcing its transit agencies to buy buses only from Novabus because the plant is located somewhere in Quebec. The irony here is that transit agencies in Ontario buy Novabus LFS whereas Quebec agencies wont buy from Orion (made in Ontario) or New Flyer (made in Manitoba). This is in addition to Ontario sending billions of $ in equalization payments.
    Talk about dirty politics?

I know exactly what your talking about. That bus is the Orion III, just type Orion III in your search and you should find a video of it. The TTC initially had 90 of them, starting in 1995 the TTC began pulling them off because of severe frame and joint corrosion. In the end the TTC kept 19 and rebuilt them until 2003 since they couldn't meet service demands. The rest were scrapped or sold to OC Transpo.

That of course requires parts and money. Cost of rebuilding New Looks is increasing greatly. All large New Look fleets are kept alive longer purely by using a retired bus as the parts source. Few New Looks are retired in good condition today. In 1998 that situation is different, there are still 1986 GM New Looks from the US that may have only retired due to age. Brills should have lived as long as New Looks but once parts were depleted its only a matter of time.

You make it sound easy, its not that simple. When the Montreal buses came in, the TTC was expecting most of its GM fleet to not make it. However since many survived you have a problem, where would these extra 40 buses go? The next garage to be built would be done only by 2002, Birchmount doesn't have its extension and you have 52 new buses along with 51 the next year. They did the best solution and used the rest as parts sources to keep today's GM fleet running.

The real reason so few Montreal New Looks were rebuilt was mainly the rebuilding done in Montreal was done poorly making it time consuming also many of the Montreal New Looks weren't in as good condition as originally thought. Since the TTC was able to rebuild far more of its New Look fleet than it estimated the need for the STM New Looks diminished.

Sadly it was probably easier for Montreal's politicians to go with new Novas to make the claim they're keeping Quebec jobs and at the same time "improving" transit with low floor accessible buses, the operational portion of transit is where they stay away from which is likely where your concern about the Novas come from.

Don't have any, sorry. They were all gone by the summer of 2004 before I even thought of this. There are other TTC fans who have short videos of them though.

Its the same model, the ones used to shoot speed are likely older than this one. Theres still many of these in Canada.

This particular series of TTC GM New Looks are gone. The non 2nd hand GM New Looks are still plentiful in number.

"since the Classic isn't very well liked." Depends on what part of the country you're from. Infact, in our neck of the woods, the LFS is not liked and we appreciate riding on Classics.

You two are talking about those accordion like arctics. Las Vegas, Orange and Los Angeles Counties (Hollywoodf therein and San Diego being among the earliest back in 1978 to have this honour!) have 'em.

Funnu though how the STM "says" riders like the low floors. Bunch of B.S. I rode a classic yesterday, and the chic driving it drove it like a pro.

That is its official name from GMC, for 1959 it was indeed a true new look and rather revolutionary, today in 2006, yes its definately not new more like really old. The irony of course is its successor is called the "Classic" which would be more suitable name for the New Look today since the Classic isn't very well liked.

No, the 2600s were much more sought after by transit enthusiasts ever since they were introduced due to their differences with the whole fleet.

The GMC New Looks are one of my favorites in the TTC fleet. They were also here before I was born. Are these buses still around or in service?
