I've loved Split Enz since the 80's, and I never drew a link with them and Grunge. They were the first internationally successful New Zealand band and were most popular during the MTV New Wave period of the early 80's. Eddie Vedder and a few other exponents of Grunge might have liked Split Enz, but I am not sure how much of an influence they had on Grunge. By the way, the other guy that pops up is Split Enz founder Tim Finn. Split Enz broke up in 1984, and a couple of members formed Crowded House. ''I See Red'' was Split Enz moving out of Art-Rock and into New Wave.
The band that Eddie is playing with here is called Betchapuda and the lead singer of that group (Liam Finn) is the nephew of the man who wrote this song (Tim Finn). I believe Tim is also singing here in this video. Side note: Liam's father Neil was in Split Enz also.
The guest singer is Tim Finn (not Neil), who wrote "I See Red" and sang it originally. Tim co-founded Split Enz and by the late 70s he hired his teenage kid brother Neil to play lead guitar and sing harmonies. Young Neil Finn learned quickly and in 1978 he wrote the band's very first international hit, "I Got You". Split Enz went from a weird 70s Art Rock band to a hilarious New Wave band, one of the best ever synth-Pop / Rock bands. Tim left the band he founded in the mid-80s, for a successful solo career, at which time Neil took over. By 1986, Neil split the band, kept the final drummer, and founded his 80s band, Crowded House. They have split up and regrouped a few times over the decades and are currently on a world tour. Neil is considered by Sir Paul McCartney and by Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac, to be the greatest songwriter in the world.
I had to request 2 songs for this one and Split Enz is just too diverse and incredible musically. This is from the 7 Worlds Collide concert, a tour that lasted for 7 gigs over 7 days all in Auckland and consisted of members of Pearl Jam, The Smiths, Radiohead and others, mostly playing Split Enz songs. I've got the DVD and playing it in full surround sound is just incredible. Soooo good. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the music. Hope to see someday your kids playing a tribute concert of Wolf Hunterz music!!
Awesome I have been looking for a reaction video to "I see red" a classic split endz song that Tim Finn (who came out second) wrote it, Neil Finn his brother joined band later as both lead singers. Neil later formed crowded house they had a little bit of success in America with "don't dream it's over". Neil just toured with fleetwood mac. This concert is seven worlds collide a collaboration of artists from around the world, Neil asked his sons band betchaduppa who they would like to play with and of course it was Eddie Vedder. Great performance by legends!!! So Much energy and great reaction. Check out more of split enz stuff they are great song writers!!!!
Split Enz core were Tim Finn, Neil Finn with 10 other musicians coming in and out of the band. That was Tim Finn who popped onstage to sing. Tim has many solo projects as well as with The Finn Bros. This was taken from a concert "7 Worlds Collide Neil Finn and Friends" featuring EDDIE VEDDER, JOHNNY MARR, LISA GERMANO, ED O'BRIEN, PHIL SELWAY, SEBASTIAN STEINBERG, LIAM FINN ( sorry caps) Liam Finn, and his band Betchapuda were the ones on stage. Liam Finn has a solo career now, as well as playing with Crowded House. It is a great DVD, not a bad song on it.
His duet with Neil Finn ( Crowded House , and formerly The Split Enz) doing 'Take A Walk" by the Enz is even better.... Look for 7 Worlds Collide Neil Finn and Friends. The kid playing guitar is Neil's son.
The dude who came out to sing was actually Tim Finn, original Split Enz lead singer. Tim's younger brother Neil later formed Crowded House. Eddie has performed with Neil on stage a whole bunch of times. And Split Enz was much more an arty new wave band with great pop hooks. They may have influenced Eddie Vedder as a songwriter but they did not invent grunge.
Yeah, One-Eye. You are right in that Split Enz didn't invent grunge. They were, though, influential, as Eddie Vedder himself said. The fact that Eddie and members of Radiohead played at this concert shows that. Communicating online is difficult, and it's easy to misunderstand things. I just wanted to share some good music, and to me, I find it fascinating to see how different era's of music influence others. Loved your comment. Full respect. :)

Same here, never made that connection either. I think Neil Finn is a genius singer and musician. Huge fan!

You've gotta go to the original Split Enz. What a completely original band they were.
Nailed it.
The second singer who came on is Tim Finn, the first lead singer for Split Enz. 😊
Watch Split Enz play this. They were at another level.

Split enz would have played this many times down at the pub on the pub circuit in Australia.....

I second your wish to see WolfHunterz better known and covered.

Actually, that was tim singing.

Neil wasn't a core member.
@@Coowallsky Thank you for the correction.
Look up Darcy Clay…
Yeah, this is a terrific choice. Well done! Always loved this performance, and boy they are COOKING at the end!
An oldie but a goodie. Tim Finn.

Betchadupa w/Eddie & Tim
The second singer reminds me of the Talking Heads/Devo.
That's Tim Finn, he wrote it. He and his brother Neil (Split Enz & Crowded House) are in the pantheon of popular music in New Zealand and Australia.
Great video.
For real entertainment, watch the original promo clips for I See Red and My Mistake.
Great punk / grunge reaction!
