- In 1984 a fledgling band called Split ENZ that included two brothers Tim and Neil Finn broke up, coming up short of the path to success they set. just a year later Neil Finn formed a new band. Their self titled debut album, though promising was a slow starter as their first three singles failed to chart, it was the forth song “Don’t Dream It’s Over"that raised a ruckus and saved the album form obscurity, a song that many legendary musicians have said they wish they’d written. One of the most enduring songs of the 80s that went to #1 In Canada and New Zealand and barely missed #1 here in the states with a #2 showing but it’s legacy has lived long past many songs that did go to #1. It’s time for another edition of our series #1 in our hearts. This week we have one of my favorite songs ever that we will honor as an all time modern standard. It went all the way to #2. It’s simply one of greatest song of the 1980s. . A song that still moves us today and will continue to Flourish centuries from now. When the Australian group Split Enz broke up, brother Tim and Neil Finn went their separate ways. Neil and drummer Paul Hester decided to form a new group, as they continued looking bass player Nick Seymour came up to Neil at a part for the Melbourne live concert of Split ENz farewell show and requested a proper try out.
They called themselves the Mullanes and brought on guitarist Craig Hooper formerly of the Reels. When signing to Capitol Records the band was forced to change their band name several times going from the Mullanes to the Largest Living Things finally settling on Crowded House after they flew to LA to record the album and were all living in a very cramped Apartment.
Crowded House the self titled debut album came out in the late summer of 1986 with high hopes. However the first single Mean to Me failed to make any headway outside of Australia, Then the second single came and went, World Where You Live, When the third single, Now We’re Getting Somewhere also failed to chart, the album looked like it was done. Then the band released the song they knew had the ability to change everything for them including the way that we the listener looks at the world Don’t Dream It’s Over was a revelation, it moved up the charts and took the band a close as one can get to the top of the summit… the #2 spot right behind I knew you were waiting for me by Aretha Franklin and George Michael…
It many not have hit #1 but it is certain It was a very competitive time on the charts… But a great song breaks through to every decade and every generation. Don’t Dream it’s over did that, first in 1987 when it looked as If Crowded House might face foreclosure. it’s serious message made people reassess their lives and the music video was equally moving. It pushed them to release a 5th singe, the beatlesque Something so strong that hit the top 10 and pushed the album to Platinum status.

Absolute gentlemen they are. Neil is my personal musical hero - best songwriter of his generation IMO, and leader of my favorite band.

I had heard about the song a few months before actually hearing it. Rolling Stone mentioned it in an article, talked about how Neil Finn from Split Enz started a new band and had an incredible song called "Don't Dream It's Over" that wasn't getting any airplay. I was a huge Split Enz fan but couldn't find the song/album. About 2 months later I was driving home in the middle of the day--really bright blue sky and little traffic--and the DJ announced the song and my eyes got wide, and turned up the volume. When the first chorus started I got chills and almost forgot my lane was ending and needed to merge lol. After that I got off on the next exit, pulled over, and just listened. I couldn't believe how amazing it was...hauntingly beautiful melody and poignant lyrics...Finn's voice was unmistakable. One of the very few songs where I remember vividly the first time I heard it, what the weather was like, where I was, what I was doing...everything.

Cool. I had the same experience with that Rolling Stone Article. I knew I Got You in 1980 and had MTV from day 1 so I saw One Step and History all the way up to a blurb in 84 about the break up. The RS article reminded me of. Oh that guy. First experience was a mix tape I swiped from a friend who worked in a record store and taped some singles and Don’t Dream was on it. Probably February of 87.. Then bought the Album Cassette and wore it out. I became such a rabid fan . Of course it got tougher in the states as they faded from the mainstream but sold out every show in Boston from Woodface and Together Alone. Your experience is awesome by the way. I hen u hear something for the first time. I always said as a writer Neil is not cheap with the hooks. It requires in some cases a few listens to capture his gift. (See Temple of Low Men, kind of a let down on release as the first record was a bit more poppy, but when rediscovered the Diamond of the bunch)

Well said. Tim’s voice was unreal to. A song I hope I never used in a ozzy movie Puberty blues. I think it was used in the closing but yes Neil voice I love equally.
This is the greatest pop song ever written. So fortunate to see them play it live this past Friday night at The Ryman.
So proud of Neil he’s just such a good guy, met him and he’s just so chilled out, as kiwis we just admire his work and his whole attitude to life.

Crowded House is one of the most underrated bands of all time. They are a phenomenal band. Don’t Dream It’s Over is a classic song that people will listen to 100 years from now.
They've got so many incredible songs, I discovered them last year and was amazed that I'd only ever heard Weather With You before. Such a brilliant discography.
I went to a CH concert at a race course where the sound gear broke down. While they fixed it Neil organised a running race for the kids and nick climbed the scaffolding to play the bonanza theme as background

So glad you mention my all time favourite band since 1977 Split Enz! Correction: They weren’t an Australian band, they were a New Zealand group. But Crowded House is an Australian band and is not the same band as Split Enz even though they shared some band members. Growing up in NZ I learned saxophone with the intention of playing for Split Enz one day. I randomly ended up meeting Neil Finn at a Party Boys afterparty in Auckland when I was 15 (thanks Tim Shadbolt for the ride there!) and we talked for ages about music as he thought kids my age didn’t appreciate The Beatles but I told him me and all my friends did! What a great night! He signed an autograph for me and the kids at school were so jealous on Monday! Still a huge fan of Split Enz and Crowded House and Neil and Tim Finn 💗

I love both brothers. This song is just amazing. As someone who suffers from Depression this song spoke to me. Neil Finn is ao underrated.❤
Only one of the band members was from Australia, the Finn brothers (Split-Enz) were from New Zealand and are National Icons, and Neil is touring with his sons here, plus a new album. Tim sang on the Wood face album but did not tour. Tim is also still writing, but he never quite reached the heights of his brother. I saw Crowded House in Nelson in 1991 and still have the original T-Shirt. Then saw them, years later in Christchurch, where they were fronted by another kiwi icon - Super Groove, one of the greatest live bands I've seen. Neil's son was on the drums for the first time. Thank you professor of Rock. Been watching Neil sing with Fleetwood Mac. Thanks to "Crowded House" and "Split Enz". Neil and Tim and family and the band members past and present. For albums, I have listened to so many times I know them off by heart. Cool grey, the colour of our time. Smiling as the Sh#$t comes down and Tammy Bakers a cheap Picasso Fake. Who else writes lyrics like these. Pick the songs people. Something so ..

I saw Supergroove as often as I could back in the day and they couldn't be beaten live, the evening they swept the NZ Music awards and played a gig afterwards was they best live gig I've ever been to. Already got my tickets for Crowded House in November.
Two of the members of Crowded House were Australian...Nick Seymour and Paul Hester.. And they were formed in Melbourne, not New Zealand...

As a 10 year old boy listening to ‘ I got you’ by Split Enz for the first time I was hooked into the Split Enz, and then, the Crowded House universe. Neil and his brother Tim are national treasures here in New Zealand. I last saw Crowded House in concert last year in Christchurch NZ. I took both of my teenage daughters along and they absolutely loved it. One of the best concerts I have ever been to. Class is eternal. Stay classy Neil.

As an Australian, I’m so proud of the success of this band and this song. It’s so powerful in ‘86 as it is 36 years later.
I saw Neil when he was in Fleetwood Mac play “Don’t Dream” live and Mick Fleetwood also said that he wished he had wrote it. Stevie Nicks added a beautiful duet sound when she sung it with Neil. Thank you Adam for covering this song

Split Endz' I've Got You is one of those songs that takes me back to when I was young.
It’s one of those 70s songs that sounds way ahead of its time!
Neil Finn is an absolute treasure. Split Enz, Crowded House, Finn Brothers, solo, just an embarrassment of riches throughout. I remember the first time I heard "She Will Have Her Way" on an internet radio station feed from overseas, my jaw just dropped, it was perfection.
I highly recommend the most recent Finn Brothers album, 'Everyone is Here', to anyone who likes thoughtful songwriting, beautiful melodies and harmonies, and just all-around rich music.
Couldn’t agree more. From pogo-ing to “History Never Repeats”, “I Got You”, “Sister Madly”, “Take the Weather With You” - it is a criminally underrated catalog of music.
‘Everyone Is Here’ - brilliant record, a master class in songwriting. One of my all-time favorites. I would highly recommend this and any of the Crowded House records; they all have a different feel, but with Neil’s songwriting you can’t go wrong.

I remember the first time hearing and seeing the Split Enz video "I Got You" on MTV and being completely mesmerized by it and then hearing this song years later and not realizing it was one of the guys from Split Enz; great song

“I Got You” was a favourite song of mine and it introduced me to Split Enz. The band came to my city on tour in 1981 and I had wanted to go see them, but had to work that night. The smaller venue they were playing at was only a block away from my work. I ended up getting off work a bit early and rushed over to the venue and just sat outside listening to the rest of their set. They sounded incredible even from outside on the street.
"Don't Dream It's Over" is one of the best written 80's songs! Definitely on my all-time 80's playlist! ❤️

When a band is that good and longstanding, the last thing they should be called is fledgling... I'm not from Australia or New Zealand, but I feel their pain.
I had a cool moment of literally driving through Te Awamutu (Finn brother's hometown) having been away from NZ for over a decade and Weather with You came on the radio. The weather had seemed to almost magically clear wherever we went and it was the most perfect Kiwi moment. Don't Dream It's Over only really hit me as I got older, but all these songs bring back great memories of a joyful adolescence. Split Enz were utterly brilliant and when Eddie Rayner put together a project (ENZSO) with NZSO and guest artists it showcased even more how fantastic their songs were.
Just saw Crowded House in concert last Friday in Red Bank, NJ. Neil was turning 65 the next day. Was amazed at how good his voice sounds. Huge fan of Split Enz, CH and the Finn Brothers.
When Neil says Paul Hester was is in 'quite social mode', we have to remember that Paul suffered from depression and may have been bipolar. One of my favourite Hester moments was a cameo be made an a Wiggles DVD. I only saw it after he passed and it was a great reminder of the joy he often brought to Crowded House.
Split Enz first hit the Aussie airwaves back in 1977 with a great tune called " My Mistake ". They are originally from New Zealand but moved to Australia in the late 70s

At first I thought they were British. I was surprised when I found out they weren’t.
I loved the Enz. I thought their last album Conflicting Emotions was underrated, but you could see where Neil was heading with his songs on that album.
This song has such happy memories of me and My dad singing in the car . I was raised on crowded house . I’m so glad I was :)

I think this song imprints memories in our brains because of the impactful lyrics and the nebulous meaning. I don't think that anyone has covered it well because it fits Neil's voice so specifically. Thanks for this one! Definitely one of the most memorable songs of the mid 80's.

Neil acknowledged how much emotion he pushed into the performance. It's such a magical song, that many people can do a great job covering it. For me, Sixpence None the Richer carried it to new heights. Very surprised it wasn't mentioned in the video. Almost makes me think there's possibly a conflict involved. I wonder what might happen if they made a duet version. Holy smokes!

I've said before that Don't Dream Its Over is THE song that makes me feel homesick for NZ (yes, rather than Better Be Home Soon). Takes me straight back to when it came out, being ten years old with all my family round me at Christmas/New Year, and I still adore it as much now as then.
Thank you Neil for writing such amazing songs. They have so much emotion and honesty in them, I never tire of listening.
"Don't Dream It's Over" is an all-time favorite of mine! I have loved it from the first time I heard it in 87. It really is a timeless song that never sounds dated. One thing I will say, while I am someone who typically loves covers and multiple versions of songs, but for this particular song, I have never come across a cover that I like; there is just something about the original! ☺
The original is the best hands down. Easily. For my money, a lot of cover versions of songs I like don’t quite beat the original.
Nothing beats the original however, I quite like Stan Walkers cover.

This song constantly reminds me of the state of the US.
"They've come to build a wall between us" is the government and mainstream media trying to divide us politically and racially.
"Don't let them win" is the attitude I carry every day. I have a smile for everyone I meet and love others no matter their race, ethnicity, political opinion, etc.
You are unfortunately right with the first lyric. Politics is gradually seeping its way into everyday life now. It sometimes feels like it has to ruin everything.

I saw Neil play DDIO at the LARGO just before the 2016 election and after”they come to build a wall between us, you know they won’t win” Neil said, “did you hear that, Donald?” I felt the whole room gasp.

Crowded House were huge in Britain for a few years and Don't Dream It's Over is a fantastic track. Critics said they tended towards the bland at times but there's a real depth to their art running through their career. Neil Finn is always a thoughtful interviewee. The rendition of Don't Dream It's Over at the 1996 farewell concert at Sydney Harbour is truly a heart breaking moment and very moving, in particular the late, missed Paul Hester's reactions as the concert draws to a close. RIP.
Critics (as a whole) don't tend to know much, they only pretend that they do. When they call an artist like Crowded House 'bland', it's because that artist defied what the critic expected, so they get snotty about it instead of admitting they were wrong.

@@Elwaves2925 It might be simply their opinion and they are entitled to it given that music is subjective by definition. There could be any number of reasons for perceiving an artist as bland but one of the least likely would be the artist defying expectations.
@@eightiesmusic1984 For some it will just be their opinion but they aren't the type of critic I'm referring to. There are many critics out other (past and present) that don't like to be proven wrong and they don't react well to it. Many of them can't be trusted to give an honest opinion, especially these days when clicks and views are all the thing. They'll give the opinion that best caters to that, UA-cam is full of them.
After Don't Dream It's Over was out for a while, I noticed a lot more people saying "hey now." The song Never Be The Same by Crowded House is one of my favorite songs from the 80s. It got limited airplay here in SoCal on 1988 but should've gotten far more...

Amazing band, and such nice people too. In February 1987, Houston, Texas, they opened for Bruce Hornsby & the Range. Unfortunately, their gear didn't arrive with them, so I think they had to rush out and buy some instruments. They kept apologizing, but they were amazing! I think it may have been just a small drumset, guitar, and bass guitar, I don't remember exactly. I was just so impressed that they rose above the adversity and still had a great show. They really won me over that day.

Saw them in Austin and met them backstage. Everything changed
Was introduced to them that January in Omaha during that same tour. Was there to see Hornsby. CH absolutely stole the show with the strength of their songs. Rushed out and bought the album, and have been following Neil ever since. It's too bad that they never had the success in the states that they have had elsewhere in the world. Woodface in particular was loved in Europe and ignored in the US.
I'm another one of those fans of kiwi greats Split Enz who was anxious to hear what Neil Finn's new band was all about. The first song I heard on the radio was Something So Strong and I found a promo EP that had it, along with World Where You Live and Mean To Me, before their debut LP came out. Still, when I finally took home their first album, I was blown away by Don't Dream It's Over, especially that beautiful bridge section. Crowded House became one of my top 5 bands and my admiration of Neil Finn has only grown. From his days in Split Enz, Neil has given us dozens of great songs.
Split Enz's last single "Message To My Girl" was a pre cursor to the Crowded House style. Neil Wrote that too. Message To My Girl always takes me back to the 80's and 5th form in high school in NZ.

@@nickland4450 no Split Enz were from NZ originally they only crossed the ditch to break into the Aussie scene which was really good during the late 70s 80s and early 90s. Australia had some excellent live bands during that Era. I remember going to concerts and seeing bands like Cold Chisel The Angels Little River Band and a lot of others that would do mini tours of NZ. Good times.

As I am sure someone has said before me [but I am too lazy to read through 300-odd comments] Split Enz was a NEW ZEALAND band - although with their rotating cast they picked up a few Aussie members here and there ...Crowded House was an Australian band, although, at times, when Tim Finn joined them, thy had a 50/50 Aus/NZ mix... FTM , as a side note, the late Paul Hester had been in both Split Enz and Crowded House as well.
Additional side note: Split Enz will be celebrating its 50th Anniversery next year and Eddie Rayner is hinting that they may do something for it, although no mention was made of whether the Finns would be involved - would still be cool though.

I have been a fan of Crowded House since 1986. I was 12 years old. I had the cassette tape of Crowded House and I played it all the time. I saw them live in the early 90's and they were amazing. I loved how they joked around with each other during the concert. Love them and this song. Thank you for the great interview with Neil.

Thank you, I never realized the connection between Split Enz and Crowded House. I loved Split Enz with songs like I Got You, Six Months in a Leaky Boat, and Dirty Creatures.
One of bunch of great songs they created: 'Weather With You', 'Four Seasons In One Day', 'It's Only Natural', 'Pineapple Head', 'Distant Sun'...personally, 'Fall At Your Feet' edges 'Don't Dream It's Over'. It's a less complex tune but I just love the mood of the song.

Fall At Your Feet is so good but there's too many greats for me to pick a favourite. It depends on my mindset as I listen. Private Universe is also a stand out for me, along with the ones you mention, plus Now We're Getting Somewhere for it's energy.

I bought the CD after hearing 'Mean to me', which is a cracking song. But the second single, 'World where you live' is the best song on the album IMHO. If you haven't heard these songs then you should. And if you are getting into Neil Finn it really is worthwhile to go back through Split Enz. Neil and Tim are both obscenely talented. Have a listen to 'I see red' which was actually recorded as a demo, but released.

Definitely one of the best songs of the '80s. The Hammond B3 sound was really different for '86, and I always thought they were indebted to Procol Harum's Whiter Shade of Pale for that cool organ hook.

On a trip to Sydney back in 1989 I saw split enz/crowded house at darling harbour on new year's eve, great memories, I also lived in Australia during first half of the 80s, so I got into heaps of nz/oz bands from that time, I reckon one step ahead was the first song I heard by split enz back in 81, other faves are I see red, dirty creature, message to my girl, 👍🎸🇳🇿🇦🇺
In the 70’s Split Enz played frequently at Radio Hauraki’s (pirate radio station) “buck a head” concerts on Sunday nights at the Auckland Town Hall. For a dollar you got two bands each doing a shortish set about 45-60 mins. Split Enz were a revelation.
This song is def no. 1 in my heart - I’m a kiwi and this is song is everywhere and amazing
If you like this song listen to Message for my girl by Split Enz. The Late 70s and early 80s was a great time for music in NZ. With great bands like Dragon, Mi-Sex and many others there was so much talent around then.
Message To My Girl is Neil at his best vocally if you ask me, it's just so damn GOOD....💜
And Citizen Band, Golden Harvest, The Crocodiles, Hello Sailor, etc. All had to go to Aussie to actually make a living though, such a small market in NZ.

I have a fun memory with this song, I was leaving college one day about 3 months ago with the girl I like and we jammed out to this song while I drove her to her car.
I have been into Neil Finn since Split Enz (I Got You), and Crowded House was a watershed point in his career and music. Don’t Dream It’s Over truly is one of those songs that transcends generations. Something So Strong was a fun tune, very cheerful and catchy. My favorite of his songs, and of songs in general, is You Better Be Home Soon. Pure beauty. Such a tragedy to lose Paul Hester. RIP.

It's funny listening to you talk about how the album wasn't charting, because here in Australia it was huge!
My favourite memory is on a Contiki tour throughout Europe in the 80's & we were encouraged to play our own music on the bus...this album became the favourite of the entire bus...so now everytime I listen to it, it takes me back there.
It’s interesting the difference perspectives. To me split enz were big. i like a few artists that are big in aus but not in their own countries.
Grateful for this. Neil's voice takes me to otherworldly places. Excited to get to see them again in September!!

What a wonderful interview. Neil comes across as genuine, intelligent and easy going all at the same time. As a fan of Split Enz I was surprised to hear Crowded House featured a Finn brother but not both. The intro and entire song are now so well known it may be forgotten how original and attention grabbing it was back in '86. I'd sit and simply listen and be in awe of the music... Don't Dream It's Over was a revelation. Immediately searched out the CD. My experience with the album benefitted from Don't Dream being the 4th track... you discover other fine songs on the way. The entire album is great. Always a treasure to have an album that captures your attention the whole time.

The Finn brother's are from my hometown called Te Awamutu. Tim Finn went to school with my dad. We were actually back home in Te Awamutu a few weeks. Was great to be back. I live in Aussie now, the wife and i got to see them in 2016 at the Sydney opera. Was awesome!!

Happening to hear the album playing days after its release in a Tower Records in Bellevue, Washington, I ran up to the counter where they had the "now playing" stand and bought the CD right then and there. Since then I've seen CH and Neil solo in concert about seven times--and each time I float home afterwords, fulfilled. Thanks for this episode!

I remember hearing Don't Dream It's Over for the very first time as a teenager, and I was blown away by how beautiful it was. Crowded House has since become one of my all time favorite bands, and I can't get enough of them.
My favourite CH song is "Better Be Home Soon". Great melody, haunting lyrics and awesome harmonies, in my top 10 of my all time list.
Split Enz was one of my fav bands from back in the day too.

Yeah, for anyone not from Australia or NZ the opening comments could be construed as meaning Split Enz weren't successful. Far from it they were one of the great bands from the greatest period of Australian/NZ bands.

It's no surprise this song is so legendary - timeless lyrics, outstanding melody, memorable chorus and the organ parts of the song give it such unexpected richness at the perfect spots (I LOVE the Hammond organ). It blows my mind "Mean to Me" wasn't a big hit because it's such a great song, too. Great interview, Professor. Neil really seems like a cool guy.

This is one of the songs of the 80's that is an absolute quintessential tune- so universally known. It's TIMELESS... instantly taking us back every single time it hits the ears. The irony in the song really makes relevant today, at least as much as it was 30 years back. Love hearing this song, it just stands the test of time IMO.

Neil is my all time favorite musician. His catalog from Split Enz, CH, solo work, Finn Brothers and other projects rival the greatest popular musicians of all time. Sadly, most people are completely unaware of his work. I hope you will help bring the rest of his work to the world.
I remember being fascinated by the "Don't Dream It's Over" video when I was a kid watching it on MTV. I personally love "Something So Strong" too and a song from 1988 called "Better Be Home Soon," which actually wasn't a big hit (surprisingly) in the U.S.
....I CRIED when "BBHS" bombed! ....literally!! ...I was getting Milk from the Grocery store, listening to the tune on me Walkman, and started CRYING! ....was waiting for it to go Top 40, only for it to peak at #42....waaaaahhhhh.....

Split End and Crowded House are two of the greatest bands of all time, Neil Finn and his brother Tim are musical geniuses, DON'T DREAM ITS OVER is a masterpiece and a huge mega fan of them and their long list of remarkable bandmates, it is one of many, many, many brilliant songs they made and Crowded House has a new album coming out as this posts. To paraphrase them, they never cease to amaze me!!!

A great song - I've been a big fan of Neil Finn for many years, through Split Enz, Crowded House, and others. In my opinion, the finest pop vocalist ever (closely followed by Paul Carrack).

I was lucky enough to have grown up in Sydney Australia during this period of Australian / New Zealand music ( i was 12 in 87) and it's funny but I remember this entire album being a huge hit, being played non stop on all the stations.... I must admit i just assumed it was a number 1 in Australia as well

I remember taking Latin class that 86-87 school year as a freshman- I was a high school preppie teen like those students in the movie Dead Poets Society 🤣
We went to The Cloisters in Manhattan NYC in early 1987 as a school trip in a yellow school bus - I bought a pocket sized hard cover book called The Canterbury Tales in old English for $5 at the souvenir store ! While everyone else bought post cards - I still have that little book - it’s a special keepsake now

My mother was in her senior year of high school during the fall of 1986 and spring and early summer of 1987. She listened to Black people music but remembers these songs from watching MTV as well!
First heard as a child when it released, but it was later on an 80s compilation in the 90s that it was cemented as one of my favourites. That started my exploration into their albums. Seen them in concert, what a moment to hear it live. Never far from my ears, still a go to song on my phone

Together Alone is the album that got me into Crowded House. Neil Finn is under appreciated with the masses, but not by those in the know. Johnny Marr called him a master songwriter in an interview recently.
I love this song, this band, this man , his sheer talent, his humour , all their albums , seeing them live , meeting them... they are up there with the best in my book ❤️
