Thank you for doing this request of mine, it's greatly appreciated, Chris and Cynthia. This is my favourite 'Split Enz' track of all time, it's off of the same album as "I Got You" and is called "True Colours".
Split Enz were a New Zealand band formed in 1972. Regarded as the first New Zealand band to gain significant recognition outside of Australasia, they were initially noted for their progressive/art rock sound, flamboyant visual style and theatrical performances two brother Tim and Neil Finn part of the original band, Neil Mullane Finn OBE migrated to Australia and formed a new band Crowded House. Peace out.
@@DogInSpace Yeah, my mate Madison and I used to frequent this channel till I had to deal with personal crap and Madi had her account on suspension. I've seen you before with a lot of other Melbourne folk.
Remember this one even though it was not around for very long........it was a song that got in your head and you found yourself humming the tune without even realising it.......brings back fond memories.
Like most of us in the States, 'I Got You' was my introduction to the Enz, and then I went out and bought my laser etched copy of the album and was a fan ever since. Eddie Rayner's keyboards were always one of the highlights along with the clever songwriting. Nice upload.
This song starts with the lyrics "My love is alien", and he says they talk through ultra high frequency, and he can't see her face because there is too much space, as in interstellar space between them... Split Enz was a hot bed of creativity. From the lyrics, to the rhythms, to the keyboard sounds.... So much talent! I know everyone will tell you to give Crowded House a try (which you have) but also Phil Judd with the Swingers, doing Counting The Beat, or Tim Finn with Made My Day (a song to really lift your spirits) or Staring At The Embers or the 60's influenced Through The Years. Or more of the Enz is always good too!
They've done a series of reunion gigs since they folded. The one I saw was NYE 89-90 in Sydney. Split Enz, backed by Crowded House (also with Neil Finn), Hunters & Collectors and a local band called Food. That was one great gig!
SPLIT ENZ are such an excellent pop band... Some of their greatest songs: "MISSING PERSON," "SIX MONTHS IN A LEAKY BOAT, " "HAUL AWAY," "SHARK ATTACK," ... and so much more.
Although I have an almost complete collection of Split Enz albums, I had almost forgotten this song. Thank you for resurrecting it for me. The stills do show the past history of the band (I may have been at a couple of those early concerts) when it started out as Split Ends. I remember when the band was on a local TV talent show and came in second or third. (At the time I thought they were too clever for their own good.) And then there was the brilliance of the "Sweet Talking Spoon Song" (if memory serves me right). I don't think that ever made it to an album.
The clip is in the UK, where it was released (only) as a single. The next studio album "Corroboree" (1981) (as it was released here in Australia) was the first album I ever bought. (It was released in NZ and elsewhere as "Waiata")
I love this song!! Some of the visions in the video are of them in New Zealand before they came to Australia. Did you see the photo where their name is Split Ends!!! They changed it later to Split Enz!!
OK the guys that you didn't recognize in the clip weren't the band in a previous incarnation, they were a band called Split Ends and they were in a stouch with our boys , Split ENZ over the name , so in jest they added some Split ends footage to this clip ..your welcome 😊
I don't think there's a Split Enz song that I don't like, been a fan right from the start, when they were introduced to Australia in late 1977, with That was my mistake. At first it didn't really take off until later in 78' and it's still one of my favourites. 💖
Thanks for doing this one, and getting back to something a little close to home - for me, anyway. This song reminds me of all the new friends I made and old friendships I re-established after returning to Australia in '79. They were all Countdown and Split Enz crazy, and this was one of our favourite songs from the fabulous _True Colours_ album.
After answering to somebody over a Kate Bush/Chrissy Amphlette comment, I completely forgot what I was going to say about this song and band. I enjoyed them back in the 70's, and they weren't too shabby in the 80's either. Split Enz began in New Zealand as a skiffle band with theatrical aspirations. Tim Finn and Phil Judd were the band's figureheads. Judd left Enz in the 70's and Neil took over. Phil then scored a hit called ''Counting The Beat'' with The Swingers *check 'em out* Skiffle was played by a few Aussie/Kiwi groups before they got electric. In the early 70's, an Adelaide skiffle band called Moonshine Jug And String Band played around Universities with washboards, spoons, etc. Then they got their electric instruments and became The Angels. Moonshine Jug And String Band - Keep You On The Move (The Angels before going electric.. worth checking).
When this song came out, mtv was not around yet. Bands were not required to make videos on top of their requirement to make great music…..so, my suggestion is, listen to this without looking at the video….that way you will get the same experience we got in the 80’s. This was one of my favourite song of all time, but I never saw the video…..only the music was important, not whether they could also make a video! So, I have loved this song forever, but only seen the video via reactions in the last 5 years…..the video is not needed to hear great music! Don’t judge music from 80’s or earlier by the videos….in fact close your eyes….don’t look at second rate videos to hear 1st rate music!
I made the video because I run a series of channels based on Australiasian music on UA-cam called ''nzoz'' (ie; nzoz1979, nzoz1980). I thought, at the time, that I needed some visual filler, and took it upon myself to make a clip. What you see on the Hanier's reaction is what I made some fifteen years ago. I didn't make it to distract anybody.
I’m surprised I hadn’t suggested this one. Maybe I’ve not thrown any Split Enz suggestions in. That would be right, you picked just about the only Split Enz video I didn't remaster :) I an unsure why I didn't do this one, it must not have been on their Best of DVD or I couldn't find a decent source copy....or both. I remastered almost all their videos in January 2022 after someone mentioned that there were hardly any in good quality on UA-cam. I see you did "Message To My Girl" quite a while ago now and used my version, good stuff. There were so many bad blurry copies around with poor audio. Hope you are well and cheers for the recent email, Austech
G'day Austech (not sure if you want your real name used), I actually recommended my nzoz uploads becuase the sound is louder than your uploads. Although I really like the picture quality of your Enz uploads, the sound is a little lower than my uploads. A lot of your content has come to great use on this channel, and I usually recommend your uploads over my own. But in the case of Split Enz, I think my nzoz uploads have a much stronger sound and like yours, they're available for viewing in Canada.
