The best thing about this bit is imagining, just imagining, how many evenings Michael Davis spent alone in a garage juggling butter and letting it slap him on the face. Over. And over. And over.

He almost certainly used something of roughly the same size and weight considering that he does it just as well with a less gross object like the bread.

I loved watching the Paul Daniels Magic Show as kid/teenager. It was essential viewing.
Watching the Paul Daniels show as a kid was fucking awesome. Now he’s considered a figure of fun in the culture, but at the time he was such a highly regarded magician worldwide, it meant British TV viewers were treated weekly by visits from the best visiting variety acts from across the globe.
He was the highest paid entertainer on the BBC at one point, and his show was the number one for a long time, with good reason. He was an amazing talent and comedian, and I for one missed that show when it went off.
Really, Benedict Cumberbatch is a man of many talents!!
I'm not a big fan of playing with food (that's an euphemism) but I really like the fact that in the end M. Davis actually initiate to put the butter on the presentator's face, but didn't. I've got the feeling that nowadays, transgression make us laugh, even if it often becomes irrespect. I really love the fact that this was only suggested - so we could all understand what he was about to do. And finally P. Daniel put himself the butter on his face, and it still was very funny, like "I don't want you to be alone on this, let me do this dumb thing too" which is absurd in a way, but way more pleasant to see. (This is obviously my opinion, you may have yours.)
Not seen this clip. I think Paul was like an over-joyed kid with this act .never seen him look so happy.

This was just 2 years after "Feed the world" Live Aid...
In other performances of this "food group" performance, Davis made a slightly off-colour joke about how he felt sorry for the (poor/hungry) jugglers in India. Some of his jokes in other performances were a bit more risque as they were aimed at a different audience, but he toned it down a bit for things like this and when he performed for the Queen.
