    If I'm going for perfection in gelcoat, I don't use a ceramic (unless a very new boat) I prefer the ease, cost and reliability of Fire Glaze by RMP. Make sure you get all the oxidation out of the gelcoat, get a great finish, clean and strip the surface and then apply Fire Glaze.

    There's a "marine" version but it has the same main ingredient as Fire Glaze, just a different lubricant/carrier solution made to be environment friendly. I find it dries rather fast and as I'm in a hot climate, I use Fire Glaze instead of Restructure Marine Polish. I like their Mirasol spray for all the interior furnishings as well.

    I'm going to try it on a Motorhome and I'm going to use 3M Heavy Cut with a Wool Pad, keeping in mind that this will be my first time.

      Hi. Thanks.
      On your 1st attempt, you'll get frustrated possibly, take a pause, grab a beer and watch another video. It's all there. I mostly do boats but RV's are usually gelcoated so it all works the same.
      I show everything but that little trick, don't worry about that step. It's for going from a 9, to a 10. Most people love a 6 I find.

    Another great teaching opportunity for me to learn some more. I have been doing boats for 26 years and you are one of best I have seen. I don't get most swirls out because most customers don't won't to pay for the time to get out swirls. I don't do many boats anymore because my legs gave out. To many detailers charge to little today. Can't make the money I used to make. I have customers asking if I will work for a hundred a day, I look at them like your crazy.

      I try to eliminate swirls whenever I can so nobody feels they have the right to ask me for a discount.
      $100 a day is almost enough to get me to look at someone else working on a boat. Almost Lol

    I've been following along all your videos and taking notes. You have responded to everything I have asked so far, and the knowledge you freely share is amazing! I just started a test area on my 1995 Key West 1500. I removed all the decals and plan to put new ones on once the boat is nice and shiny. There was a waterline "stripe" decal across bottom of the length of the boat. When I carefully removed it with a heat gun (like your videos show) I was excited to see what looked like the original boat color that I hope I can get back to. It was lighter, and shinier than anything else on the hull, but was raised slightly higher (or maybe lower?) than everything else. I couldn't see it so much as feel it with my fingertips. I started with Heavy Cut on a wool pad nice and easy like you say and built up to a comfortable, controllable speed. After some time, I got the area to level out, meaning if I closed my eyes and ran my fingers across it I could not feel the line. However, the color variation did not go away. It has diminished considerably, but I can still visibly see the lighter shade of line across the darkened hull. So my question is this... Do I simply need to keep going? Is it time to move down to Super Duty to cut through this area? Or is this just a permanent relic of a 30-year-old hull that wasn't taken care of properly? Thanks so much for your time and all you do on this channel!

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  3 роки тому +3

      It'll go away more and more with each buffing if you don't mind. If you really want to get it, block sanding can take care of it but Super Duty can also.
      I'm happy to see someone giving it a go. Keep working. Your 1st time buffing shouldn't be perfect, that's my job and I still mess up sometimes. Just get comfortable and every season, you'll be better and better.
      My best!

      Do you use a 3m quick connector to your pad

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  3 роки тому +2

      Depends on what buffer I use (I have 2 at all times. Unnecessary tool, the quick connect. It makes no difference in these results, which nut I use on the spindle.
      Use what's available and easy. I don't save time with the quick connect. I prefer just a coarse-thread 5/8" nut. It'll never fail you and works with many pad manufacturers wheels as opposed to just 3M pads which suck this year.

    How mow should be charge for a job like that

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  Рік тому

      I mean, can anyone in my area do this? No, so I can charge more than what's available locally. If however I left swirls, I'd charge the going rate. (call around to find this)
      Somewhere between $40-80, up to $120 a foot, depends on the finished job. This guy tipped an additional $1,000.
      Your new pay rate becomes effective when you do.
      What I charge is only relevant to my local boats. I'd charge more in Seattle, more in CA and way more in France or the Mediterranean because of the market and lack of quality workers for this kind of job.
      Hope that helps.

    Hey Lee, I live in the Orlando Florida area and I purchased a 1993 Bimini Skier (Mastercraft knockoff) about 3-4 months ago. It needed a transmission, so I got a deal. The gel coat was heavily oxidated so I watched your videos and went to work. I spent a day buffing and used 3m heavy cut. 1st side looked great and the second side l must have been tired. Lol. I then put it in the shop for the transmission and it was there over 3 months waiting for parts, mostly sitting outside and some of the oxidation returned. I will buff again using 3m Heavy Cut, but what do you recommend to seal it and protect from the elements? I noticed in one of your comments you like Fire Glaze and you sell it. Please let me know your recommendations and thank you so much for your video training. It has been invaluable. I would love to send you before and after photos when I get finished if you would like and if you can provide me your email address. Thanks again!!!

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  2 роки тому

      Hi Carey,
      When using heavy cut, you should be following with Perfect-it and then washing the boat to inspect it in bright light. Make sure there's no oxidation left. Then use either Flagship by Meguiar's, 3M's liquid wax with scotchguard or Pro Polish by Shurehold.
      Fire glaze is insane but requires all the oxidation to be removed first and a very clean surface to bond to. If you're dealing with an older boat and kind of new at this, I don't recommend it.
      Older boats tend to be dry and also have larger pores in their gelcoat. If you apply a light coat, it won't last because it needs more of the oils a boat wax has.
      Compounds, even the 3M products have oils in them and they can hide the true finish. Only after you have inspected the surface well should you apply your sealer. Then re-apply it at 1 month and then after another 3 months and then after another 5 months..
      The older the boat, the more neglected it was, the shorter the interval between waxing.
      Nothing will last forever and even less time on an older boat sadly.
      My email is on my youtube "about me" it won't go directly to spam as opposed to most of the emails I've received from putting it up here in the comments section.

    Local boydidgood, in your opinion, what is the best sealing wax product for use after compounding?

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  3 роки тому +2

      For what boat, in what environment, with what owner maintenance program? There are lots of boats, many possibilities for each, they're all different.
      I use flagship, 3m's liquid wax and shurhold's propolish fairly regularly.
      The best is Re-structure marine polish but nobody wants to learn how to use it so I don't talk about it, incase anyone tries it and fails. I don't need them crying about it on the forums when they screw up.
      I sell it, use it and love it but I show people in my videos, what they can access locally or on Amazon easily. These products work for about a year with typical maintenance and much longer with a dedicated thought to cleanliness applied.
      Fire Glaze plus is my favorite sealant. I sell it for $20 a bottle. Others sell it for $30-35. I cover my costs and help the manufacturer (neat guy) at that price. I get paid for my work, not referring stuff.
      The steps are simple: compound, clean, apply and enjoy.

      @@Local_Boydidgood I've decided to add exterior detailing to my rv repair business and with that have gained traction with boats. I spent a lot of money on product that I'm thinking I didn't need. I pick up on things well so hopefully this works out. I am doing a fifth wheel that is grey with black alumninum facia on the slide edges, can't seem to get it to clean up properly. I did the wool pad on 1 but seemed to dilute the color. Any suggestions? Also don't look like you use polish, so at the end of the day it is possible to buff with a wool and not have hazing or swirl marks?

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  3 роки тому

      Aluminum will most likely be painted with an automotive paint and the paint will be thin. Be careful there. Perhaps use a cleaner wax and a random orbital. Go for a gloss/sheen but new might be out of the realm of possibility.
      I can compound with heavy cut to a swirl-free finish but I've been doing this a long time. If heavy cut left swirls, follow with Perfect-it and yes, a wool pad and that should be swirl-free too but if you have ligth holograms, a random orbital and Flagship by Meguiar's should remove all of them. Use the DA to apply the wax and then using clean pads, to remove it.
      Make sure to clean the rig after compounding but before your protective step, wax, polymer, sealant, polish... (all the same basically except caranuba wax which sucks/fails)
      There's a steep learning curve with gelcoat but once you get to a point where you can get any gelcoat, no matter how faded, to come back, it all gets easier. Keep going. It's all in my vids. Not painted aluminum siding but everything else.
