    Perfect instructions, perfect demonstration of the work we need to do in order to achieve the results we may want! My next question is, after EAC do you recommend the 3M wax?

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks. Yes and no. It's good but Flagship is better (in my opinion) fire Glaze, even better.
      Make sure to clean the gelcoat to remove any oils before applying any "wax"

    Lee how many pads do you use per boat? Let’s say an average bow rider. Also how do I know when my pad’s ready to be tossed? Thanks

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  11 місяців тому

      I mean, if you watch any number of my videos, primarily, I use one pad to compound an average boat. If she's toasted, sometimes 2 (one for the Super-Duty and one for normal compounds)
      When are the pads toast?
      When you can't hide your fingernails in the pile of fibers because they're too short.
      When the backing rib is exposed and starts to touch the boat.
      When the surface can't be made to sit flat/flush with the surface because the edges have all been worn down but the middle is still fluffy.
      My pads tend to last about a month and a half (doing a boat a day) New people will cut that in half or even a quarter of the time because they abuse the pads and wear them down too quickly.
      You might keep an old pad around to get into small spots or to polish stainless or plastic. You won't be worried about ruining it by doing so.

      I assumed you might get what you needed in a better way by seeing it.
      Sometimes I play for the camera and do 3 steps in one spot before moving on but it's less efficient than just running front to back with one product/technique then switching to the next one and so on. Not shutting off the camera while all 3-6 steps are being performed, allows people to see a little more of what I see and how I think when looking at the surface afterwards.
      In most cases, I pick sections to hit at a time and there, I'll use 1 product and then the next while not doing the whole boat, just that section but then never touching it again from the last time I touched it. Otherwise, I do an entire top-side or hull-side with whatever is needed then whatever is needed next. It all, ALL depends on the boat and how much time I have in the light I need. A hard question to answer I'm afraid.

    What speed do you use with your buffer

    • @Local_Boydidgood

      ua-cam.com/video/ky-qHYzJlo4/v-deo.html
      Go slow until you're able to fully control the buffer.
      Speed is irrelevant for the most part, I show off with it. There can be an advance in some circumstances however it's dangerous and risky to both you and the boat to go as fast as I do so please, keep it slow till you get comfortable with the process and your control over the tool.
      600-800 rpm works just fine.

    Hey Lee, as always great video and instructions! Going at the SeaRay today, I have done some test spots with Heavy Cut and Perfect it, looks okay but will be trying the Super Duty, very carefully to remove all of the oxidation (I hope) and follow up with the other two products. Thanks for all the tips! Here goes👍

    I wish I bought this instead of Maguires marine compound and polish. I’m using a 7 inch rotary on a jet ski🙃 I watched a few of your videos and got distracted and bought that 7 inch rotary forgetting I have a jet ski and it’s all white. Hard to see much of a difference but maybe in the sun it will look better. I can’t find any of your vids that do a white boat. Do you have a video on it?

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  2 роки тому +1

      Why does the color matter? The steps are the same, it's gelcoat. The only difference is what you're able to see in a reflection. In dark colors, you'll see more detail but on white, the same steps, result in the same shine.

      Color is irrelevant. I demo on dark colors specifically because dark colors show all the swirls and scratches. If I can do a black boat with a rotary and a gritty compound, without leaving swirls, it should be easier on white to hide these things.
      The process and techniques are the same regardless of the color.

I have before and after pics and used 3M Heavy cut.. not all oxidation has come out..I was scared that I was going to go too far and screw up the surface..It is ok but not to my liking and I'm (almost) embarrassed to show you. • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  2 роки тому +2

      1,400, double that (almost) 3,600
      Just keep it slow until you feel so confident that at full speed, you aren't going to screw up. Slow is safe and does the same thing.
      I go fast to show off and enjoy knowing that other youtube boat detailers, can't.
      The speed might save me an hour on a 21' hull but it isn't what I teach, it isn't what anyone should be doing until years are under their belt on gelcoat.

    I noticed you go slower on the edge of the wheel, with your first few passes (speed?). Then you take the speed up with the pad flat. (speed?). Thanks. My old boat has decals, afraid it may pull them off. How to deal with?

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  2 роки тому +1

      Go slow. Follow the process but don't go fast, it works @ 600 rpm just as well as what I do. The only difference is 17 years of practice on my part. Unless you have a confidence and the knowledge behind the buffer, going fast will hurt either your boat or you. Go slow.
      You can always tape off your decals but generally, don't worry about them. Pay attention to them but don't worry. Keep moving and avoid heat building up on the surface of the decals and putting the buffer up on an edge, on them. Lessen the pressure a bit and use more time, to replace more effort.
      Good luck.

    Hey Lee. Great videos.
    I’m curious about the super duty and heavy cut compounds, as 3M states that the heavy cut removes p800 and finer, whereas the Super Duty states p1000 and finer. I’m assuming that they perform differently in the real world and that is why you use the S-D and then the heavy cut.
    Can you clarify?
    Also, really hope you can get 3M to narrow down their compound/polishes. Seems like a lot of the same product in different coloured bottles. Overly confusing and has been keeping me away from their products.

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  2 роки тому +2

      Yes, they say conflicting things. I think that SD can pull 800 and HC can do 1000 but it's like having a carpenter's hammer or a farmer's Hamer. I can't tell the difference but a guy who swings one all day could. Not sure why they don't a mend that but I also agree that the line is way to spread out currently. I'm working on it sir.

    Great video as usual. Thanks for the clear instructions. Can you comment on the amount of pressure are applying as well as the speed when you start (~600rpm) and finish (~2200rpm)?

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  2 роки тому +5

      Don't focus on the speed. Slow will be a sure way to get a perfect finish. When I go slow, it's to show off, other youtube detailers can't do it so it's fun for me.
      Pressure... Enough to hold a basketball underwater? A little less. I don't generally try to fight my buffer. I let it work in an easy to control way. If you're stiff your work will be too. Just enough.. (bad answer I know)
      I run/train people to go slow, in control of the machine like leading in a dance. Allow the buffer to tell you things as well as listen?
      It all depends, there's no one way to attack gelcoat, it's different on almost every boat.

      I charge $500 for up to 3 days. The product you're "buying" is the ability to look at every boat you see and just know, "I got that". I teach how to eliminate swirls in compounding (95% at least) and then how to easily get rid of them, if any exist.
