  • This was from my 2nd graduate recital back in April 2018. Theatric no. 1 is a fun and groovy piece composed for roto-toms (or 3 different pitched drums).

Theatric no. 1 (Hiding in Plain Sight) (2002)
Casey Cangelosi (b. 1982) is a percussionist and composer and is the Director of Percussion Studies at James Madison University. He received his M.M. with Thesis from Rice University (2007-2009), his M.M. from The Boston Conservatory (2005-2007) and his B.M. from Utah State University (2000-2004). In the percussion world, Cangelosi’s composition style and boundary-pushing virtuosity has nicknamed him “The Paganini of Percussion” among his peers and “a marimbist of magisterial power and insight” by the Classical Marimba League.
Theatric no. 1 is one of his earlier works composed back in 2002. It features two players facing each other while sharing a set of 3 roto-toms. The piece goes nonstop from beginning to end, creating an energetic drum duo for about four minutes. Both players need to be in tune with one another to get the effect of the piece which involves a significant amount of unison and split rhythms with some tricky hand over hand crossovers.
