I’m paid nothing and been teaching for 6 years in California, the place that has the most rigorous credentials for sped teachers. I am an LCSW like the first girl. Remember those that want to be a counselor, these are DC salaries, where the cost of living is very high and salaries reflect that. That is not a normal wage for a starting out masters level therapist. Most of my friends, even fully licensed, we’re making in the $50’s. On top of that, if you work at an agency, you’re going to be worked to the bone. I’m going to be real. My first job was $14/hr. Then it went to $16 and I had to have 100% productivity, see 50 people a week and case loads of 120+. Then I joined the military to pay off my massive student loan debt. Now I’m in private practice. Private practice is where the money is good and you have flexibility. But before that, absolutely not. And it takes a while to get to that place.

I just retired from 22 years of military service. He is referring to base pay, apart from that we get different incentives depending on where we live, what job we do, if we're on deployment or overseas. At the beginning of your military career you really get pennies but once you establish yourslef a little bit you start earning the incentives and benefits (lots of benefits). For example in San Diego, I get an extra $350 for food and an extra $3,200 for rent. When I'm on deployment, I am tax free from the day I arrive in the Middle East (for example)... Apart from that, when I separate from the military, I have my GI Bill earned that will pay for my chosen degree in college.... And so many other benefits that recompensate your time and dedication. One of the last few jobs that also provide a pension once you retire from 20 years of service
