Mazda 5 owners! This video is absolutely correct as the mount commonly needs replacement. If that does not solve your problem take a look at the brake retention clip. It is likely your emergency brake line is not secured and is hitting something inside the wheel well. If that doesn’t fix it also check the rear bumper support bars as the plastic from the bumper can hit the inner wall of the car frame if your bumper was ever loosened by someone hitting it or sitting on the back bumper. Thank you for posting this video!
Gary, Thank you very much for taking the time to post your video and commentary on UA-cam. My wife's 2008 Mazda 3 had the exact same annoying metallic rattling noise on her vehicle. Your diagnosis was a huge help! Thanks again!
Just looked under my 2006 Mazda 5 noticed when I press the brakes the rattles stops almost completely. I then checked the brakes and then pounded on the springs. Searched on the web and found your video. Thank you! By the way. I already replaced my whole suspension and sway bar bushing. This will be my next and last project for this car.
Gary, Thank you very much for taking the time to post your video and commentary on UA-cam. My wife's 2008 Mazda 3 ALSO had the exact same annoying metallic rattling noise on her vehicle . Your diagnosis was a huge help! Sadly I don't have two trolley jacks (or one plus axle stands) but that has saved me trying to do it myself!!
Howdy from Texas. About to replace the coil springs on my '04, much appreciate the video, friend. (note to others watching: here in the US you can borrow specialized tools like spring compressors from auto parts stores, like O'Reilly)
It sure would help others if these channels got a clip of the sound the broken parts make, Then we don't have to spend hours searching what may be causing a noise.
Seems to be exactly what's happened on my Mondeo estate. Rattle rattle. The garage had a look and said it was the exhaust knocking, so they fitted new bushes and rattle rattle. They've had a pull and push while I watched and found a broken cross-member bolt head. The springs looked intact, but I'm convinced it's just like yours; broken down in the cup, so you can't see it. As you say, the ride height isn't altered. The broken bolt isn't good, but that's a heck of a job to sort out. But, I now have a seat of rear springs, and that's this weekend's job.. Thanks for the video.
Thanks to your video I checked the carriage under the spring and yes the spring was broken. I took a magnet and extracted the broken piece. The annoying rattle was silenced. I'll replace the spring, but for now, no more rattle. Never would have checked that out if not for your video. Thanks again!
Just got my brakes done today 08 Mazda 3 and mechanic was like oh By the way your rear coil springs broke of at the bottom. Very similar to these. Assuming your's too. Obviously somewhat common for these.
Be extremely careful when working with springs and compressing them. There is a lot of stored energy there that can release quite violently should something go wrong. And jack-stands are your friend.
Thanks for the video. Similar set-up on my Mondeo Mk3 Estate (non-levelling). It's a hassle using the spring compressors though. To take the old spring out, I just chopped it in half with an angle-grinder and a thin-disc, once I was sure it wasn't under any tension.
This seems to be a common problem with Mazda 3. I'm hearing a rattling in the rear of my 2008 Mazda 3 as well. I've so far had the stabilizer bar link and sway bar bushings replaced and a left rear lateral link replacement. But I still hear the rattling. I'll have him look at the springs. Thanks for the video.
There’s a serious problem with the design/quality of those rear Mazda springs. I’ve had to replace mine 3 times in 200km. Compare that to my previous GM vehicle that never had the rear springs replaced in over 200km. Btw, replacing those rear springs without removing the rear links as well (if you don’t have a spring compressor) is impossible and, as the rusted links do not remove easily it will require an angle grinder and new links.
Thanks for the video Gary. Nice to see an instructional video without lots of unnecessary words. How many miles does your 3 have? Spring just went on our 5 at 80k. Probably going to swap both at the same time to make sure both sides ride the same height and behave the same. One very leaky shock too, will get both of those swapped too. Hoping all parts will be less than £160. And hopefully only a couple of hours' labour.
Andrew Coomber I am really glad you found it helpful, it's got 91k on the clock at the moment. The other spring went about a week after the video so both done now but at the time the parts place only had one in stock, it did for the mot though. Front springs and all shocks seem OK so far. Next for the mazda is probably discs and pads all round.
this happens quite often on mazdas. I had a three year old mazda 2 which had a snapped spring. apparently the paint on the spring was chipped by maybe a piece of stone and the spring rusted through. and no, it is not covered by the warranty.
i just bought a 2013. sunroof leaks so much like having windows down! i replaced a pinched hose in the front. 2nd major problem raddle noise in the rear over bumps. i checked with ramps. heat shield nothing holding it was not the problem. i will jack it up tomorrow see if its the springs. thanks 4 your video
Thanks for this. I rotated my tires and saw the rear spring snapped. I mean I took my cx5 on a long trip and never heard any rattle but the rear spring is just sitting there but snapped. Looks like I can diy this as you only need the bolt down there but I need that spring clamp though.....(got to get that tool)
Would be nice to see a diagnosis of the problem, maybe bounce the car while filming underneath. I'm still trying to figure out if this could be my issue. Otherwise, great video!!!
Yes ideally, I only did the one for the video because the mot was in a few hours and local parts store only had one in stock and ordered me the other for the next day.
Is there any way you can write out a short explanation as to what you did here? My mechanic wants to charge me for 2 control arms and an alignment to replace these springs!
Was it really as easy as that my rear one has snapped in the same place as yours i got the spring ready and get the tool tomorrow but it was as easy as that was it
Came here because I heard an odd noise from the NS rear on my 3 Sport the other day that's got me worried. Not a rattle, just a single 'thung' that I've never heard before. If it is the spring it'll be the first one I've had fail in some 46 years of fixing my own cars.
Did you notice any other issues besides the rattling? I have rattling and my back end is getting pretty bouncy. Not sure if it's just the spring or if my suspension all needs to be done.
If its bouncy that normally points to rear shocks needing replacing, try with the boot open to bounce the rear end with your weight it should come up and settle almost immediately but if it bounces or takes a while to settle it points the the shocks absorbers.
The struts weren't leaking and no bouncing or anything, the mot was actually about half an hour after this video was filmed which is why we only showed one side spring getting done , I changed the other during the next day. As for the struts though I did ask them at the mot if they needed replacement incase having a broken spring had caused an issue but they said they were fine.
AT 3:35, there is a nut on the left side of the camera view. You need to loosen that nut (unless you already did, and I didn't see) so you don't have to compress the spring.
Problem is that bolt sets the rear wheel alignment. The manual says to just disconnect the anti-roll bar link from the lower arm and then remove the outer bolt as here.
@@Graham_Langley yes. a bit late on this response. But I saw in another video they just removed the top bolt of the rear sway bar end link. That way there would be more looseness when the lower arm is then pushed downward. It should allow enough gap to barely need the use of the spring compressor device he was showing. So it should make getting the spring out and in easier.
@@darkherostar And now it's my turn: I've not done this on my '06 - I only discovered it this morning - but it occurs to me that if you do both sides at the same time you won't be fighting the anti-roll/sway bar.

The Allen bit was rounded and I didn't have my impact with me , so it just span around. I later replaced both front and rear ones though when another knocking appeared, I did a video on it I think.
Brian Cullen Yeah flew through, happy with it so far and £37 for a spring can't really grumble. Priced up discs and pads all round only £110 so just before winter I might change them out as just under half life left now I reckon.

I've had a rattle and i found its it's the exact same thing as this so this video is a big help, thank you for posting :D
I wish you did a before and after ride so I can hear the noise. Either way good video, thanks for the info
Yeah I wish I had thought of that too, but if it helps it sounded as if I had two loose spanners in my boot clanging together lol
@@dickoR33 I had the exact same thing. How dangerous do you think it is to drive with a coil like that?

Trebor Eclap it's so satisfying to find an annoying rattle isn't it lol it drove me mad until I found it.
Did that work taking it out i brought a spring ready to do it but how long did you drive it like that after you took the broken bit out

Pretty sure this video pointed me in the rite direction, been having rattling noises in the rear suspension of my 08 for a month or so. Good info

There will usually be a rattle coming from the back that sounds like a bunch of metal or coins banging together

Springs are fine, but both have the paint flaking off exactly where they seem to fail.
Four years later during the pre-MoT wheels off inspection I spotted that the OS one has broken. There's a pair on the way.
Great video man very informative.
Got mine replaced today and they're clunking a bit, maybe they just need time to settle in??

You should have taken the control arm off as your destroying the bushing in it by over extending
Didn't need spring tools to get that out should of undid the 7mm nut and 6 Allen on that stabilizer bar and it would pop out
