I actually bursted out laughing when you said “babe what’s wrong? you’ve hardly touched your uncanny burger” 😂😂😂😂😂
I did too!
uncanny burger?!?!?!😰
The 'dead eye' is what makes them very creepy to me, it gives a "lost" expression, like they aren't actually seeing/focusing on anything... so weird
Omg! That’s it! I could never really put it into words why I’m so bothered by this phenomenon, but it all clicked with the whole “lost” expression thing.
Yeah, I think Greg brought up a really good point here that sort of debunks the whole "omg were humans instinctively trained to be scared of something that looks not quite human in the past??? 😱" part of the uncanny valley. A lot of these uncanny valley examples look dead, or more precisely, like humans who are dead or are very close to dead, which makes total sense as to why we would be naturally perturbed by them. Our ancestors probably developed the survival instinct to avoid fresh corpses or other humans that look very sick/deathly, as to not get sick themselves.
its because IRL people's irises actually constantly shift a little when they focus on something which is a detail they dont add
That and they didn’t know how to animate “micro expressions” well so yeah it was very easy to have dead eyes
If you want expressions you play L.A. Noire, simple as.
In defense of Terminator, he literally isn't Human. Being at least a little uncanny makes sense to me. Terminators are supposed to pass for Human only at a glance really, just long enough to infiltrate Human settlements and resistance cells, they even say that the earlier models were worse than the current ones. Rubbery skin, blank expressions, I'd imagine they have glass-like eyes too.
I felt similarly with Tron Legacy - he was supposed to be a digital copy of the dude, so his slightly falling short of humanity felt appropriate.
Alita: Battle Angel is essentially how anime eyes would look on a real person.
it's literally because the character was a Martian. had nothing to do with anime eyes.
The weird Japanese dudes would probably like that lol
EVERY SINGLE TIME i think to myself “huh i sure would love a new gregbrodudeman vid, it’s been a while” THERES A NEW VID. EVERY TIME.
Your subconscience knows his upload schedule better than you👁️
Greggy sense
majic! ✨🔮
Please keep thinking that, then.
I was a VFX artist for 15 years and this video makes me happy. Some things to consider are that artists absolutely agree with everything you said and it’s often the pressure of deadlines and crazy last minute decisions from the director etc that can lead to uncanny results or bad scenes in particular. In response to “why did they make movies like thjs” that had dodgy uncanny humans etc, I will say that only in the heat of battle making films like these do you make huge technological breakthroughs on this stuff! It’s very challenging working on films like these but bit by bit we learn new lessons and ways to improve stuff. ❤❤❤
The way Avatar handles the eyes is what sells it. I noticed it when I saw Way of Water in theaters. Eyes normally dart back and forth when they're focusing and they capture that perfectly in the Na'vi characters. It's that lack of movement that makes the eyes look 'dead'.
i didn't find the Adventures of Tintin very uncanny myself, honestly. i think they stylized it just well enough!
It's actually the best version of motion capture animation, I think. It has its moments, but I'm so taken aback the Oscars ignored it completely.
The creepiest resurrection/de-aging was Carrie Fisher, as young princess Leia in Rogue One. I remember watching the movie feeling weird because Carrie Fisher died the same year.
Crazy to think I watched most of those movies on TV and didn't think much of it until I saw other people pointing it out.
The “dead eyes” have everything to do with the fact that cgi eyes don’t look wet and that’s why you can tell that something isn’t alive yes you can have reflections in eyes but the human eye has a certain look to it that cgi just can’t make perfect
Yet…
I disagree. There are so many normal looking cgi characters that have normal eyes. Thanos, Gollum, Davy Jones, the Navi from Avatar.
@@SuperAlfern everything you just named isn’t a human being so it’s more forgiving yes all of the things you listed are correct they are really good but they are more creature designs rather than human designs for a lot of reasons humans are just hard to get right sometimes
@@jensoop That is true, but I still think they had human eyes. Especially Thanos, but maybe that was because it was basically just Josh Brolin’s face.
Fun story: mars needs moms apparently had a scene in it where the mom almost sacrifices her life or something. I watched it in theaters at like 5 years old. So, during that scene, i suddenly understood as a child that my mom could die. I learned about my mothers own mortality while watching infamous box office bomb, mars needs moms.
idk why but this guys voice makes so much of the scary stuff less scary
I agree. His voice is very calming.
Just saying
Your vibe is so chill it’s amazing
You’re awesome! Keep up the good work
Yes, thank you for adding Christmas Carol. I remember watching it when it came out, I was 7 and I remember being so freaked out by that movie. It was so uncanny, I couldn’t tell if they were animated or real at the time
Your videos always make me feel like I’m hanging out with a friend! Thanks for the video!
The animations for ‘monster house’ always gave me the creeps . In a good way😂
25:33 he took the "reject humanity, return to monke" thing to literal
babe wake up gregbrodudeman posted
Yippee
Who? Leave me alone im sleepy af
Lol
Thanks bae
It’s actually pronounced “GregBroDudeMan”
That scorpio king double take is wild 😂😂
The problem with Cats, which a lot of people didn't seem to realize is that they have human noses! But also the songs aren't that good except for Memory, and the movie version of that isn't as good.
Something that struck me is the characters interacting with the large sets are weird. Humans don’t have cat proportions so it’s giving Gulliver’s Travels tiny people when they’re scaled down.
I think Tin Tin works well now that I see it again but as a kid it creeped me out. Maybe some textures are a little too realistic and Tin Tin sounding older than he looks is odd, but still not a big deal.
Heck yeah I love your videos Greg, and I especially enjoy uncanny valley content. Can't wait to watch this while hanging out and playing Minecraft.
Okay but you saw the ANIMATRONIC baby doll that they originally used for Renesmee you would be very glad for the freaky CG version they changed it to 😩
Every time you end the video and say “I hope you enjoyed” I answer “I did!” out loud. No matter the content, creepy or not, your videos always feel like a warm hug ☺️
funny that he says they should have used a doll for Twilight: Breaking Dawn Pt. 2. they did have a doll. and it was much worse. hence going with CGI. they say they went with that particular look because they wanted to show the baby having something like conscious thought already. since she rapidly ages and is gifted. and they can't get that look from a real baby. so i guess they went with lore accurate over authenticity.
Beowulf messed with my brain as a kid because back then I thought it looked too much like real people while looking animated
Honestly i really liked the animation in a christmas carol. Yea it was a little unsettling seeing all the spirits morph and stuff, but i still enjoyed all the detail in the characters and enviroments
i feel like alita worked because she was supposed to look not human, so when next to the humans her not humanness works
Mia from Resident Evil 7 was super uncanny. Something just always seemed off with her animation that made it so weird looking.
Honestly didn't notice that CLU had dead eyes till you pointed it out. TRON: LEGACY was such a great movie for being made in 2010. One of those movies that are ahead of its time and criminally underated in my opinion.
I can't be the only one who actually likes The Polar Express.
It’s so good!
Lots of people like it. I don't mind the animation but some parts were a little creepy or nonsensical and that know-it-all kid is annoying. I like some of the music and the snowy scenes.
It's got all the Christmas magic and wonder one could ever hope for. Don't worry, I'm with you!
I can see how secretly proud and happy you were coming up with the Tin out of Tin pun off the cuff. Well played 😁
Honestly Beowulf at the time looked so good it took my mother and I a while to figure out it wasn't real life action. After the fact I can see it, but it really looked that good.
I actually liked Mars Needs Moms. It is goofy, funny, weird, quirky.. and that hot alien girl obsessed with the 60s. Great acting from the VAs, great animation for the time. Adorable robots. Wholesome but also a few double entendres. Nice science fiction. I miss good old adventure scifi without grimdark edge loading.
Always great to watch your vids Dude bro!
I recall Beowulf's CGI being considered pretty decent at the time, but Angelina Jolie's fame ruined it. Because she was so famous and her looks was always a big part of her fame, her CGI was painfully obvious as being unreal.
idc Alita Battle angel was so good. I think they did a really good job at making Rosa Salazar look like that
Also in Terminator Salvation, they just used a body double and CG'ed Arnold's face onto him, de-aging wasn't really a thing in the way that it is now (using AI)
If you want to see dead eyes, just look at your driver's license picture.
i love watching a good ol' Gregbrodudeman video yapping at uncanny things and bad acting tiktoks before going to sleep ❤
I know I’m a bit late, but I just want you to know: your uploads make my day. They help pull me out of my form of depression (probably not depression but similar) and I genuinely enjoy watching your content. Thank you!
I love this silly guy so muc
I'm this close to losing all my canny 👌🏼
I remember seeing Mars Needs Moms in theaters. I thought that was a fever dream lmao
hey greg, youre definitely in my top 5 favorite youtubers
Ever since Rocket in the GotG, there are no excuses for uncanny valley if there's any kind of budget. That little guy has expressive eyes.
De-aged RDJ looked a LOT like young RDJ. (There are advantages to being only 11 years younger than RDJ). Jeff Bridges has very lively, expressive eyes in reality.
Like Mantis in the MCU, Alita was supposed to have unnaturally big eyes.
23:27 I think the uncanny valley actually adds to the Christmas Carol. The book feels so unsettling at points even during the happy parts. The uncanny bits just enhance the inherit despair of the story and Victorian England. Plus the spiritual realm adds to it too.
Uncanny unsettle man unsettles himself from uncanny without the 'un'. man canny name is greg, otherwise canny-ily known as GregBroDudeMan: the canniest settlest settler to ever not have unsettle
Lol I hope more people notice this comment
I love me some fresh Greg video on a cozy Sunday
What's worrying to me is I can't tell the difference between some of these and real people. Like the young edit ones look normal to me.
The thumbnail ALONE of this video is nightmare fuel. I love these videos.
I mean, to be fair, Tin Tin is based on a Belgium comic, they're not trying to make them "realistic" they're making the digital version of a cartoon :)
See, that's _why_ it's so strange to me, because Hergé is famous for his clean, simple, "clear line" style. The comic art is minimalistic and stylized, and would have translated well to animation. I like the movie, but the fact that they decided, "you're seeing every single pore and strand of hair this time" feels like they're trying to fix a world-famous aesthetic.
The thing with the polar express is that it works well and you don't really notice how bad it all is in the end compared to somthing like Mars needs mom.
K but is the door to your right still open?
You brought up an excellent point about movies that are made primarily to capitalize on new technology - more often than not the only thing they have going for them is the technology, and as soon as that "new" tech becomes obsolete, so does the movie.
Now, granted, not every movie has to be a timeless masterpiece, and it's okay for some movies that are clearly only made to develop, refine or demonstrate a new technological breakthrough to fade away into historical obscurity, but personally, I feel like those kinds of movies also need to have realistic budgets and marketing strategies. I get that new technology is expensive, so a movie that looks like Polar Express, Beowulf or Final Fantasy may cost a bit more to make than your average Pixar or Dreamworks summer flick, but that money had better go to the animators, engineers and software developers who are putting their everything into creating the tools from scratch rather than some overpaid actor who just wants a paycheck to put towards their McMansion mortgage.
I love watching videos like this, because it makes me feel like an alien trying study humans. I genuinely cannot identify when something is "uncanny valley", I don't really get creeped out or see it either. Maybe it's because I can't recognize faces, so uncanny valley doesn't hit me? No clue. But watching other people see it is like watching a different species at the zoo.
In the Twilight clip, I heard the reason the baby looks so unnatural is because they digitally scanned the young actress who plays the daughter later, aged the model up to adulthood, then aged that model down to infancy. That way they didn't just have a 1-1 recreation of the actress as a baby.
gregbrodudeman posts are one of my reasons to live
Toy Story 1: Sid's dog.
heres the obligatory comment telling people stop saying first and also he didnt fall off
There's no way you got uncanny vibes from alita💀
I eated a Tide Pod
AGAIN???
You gotta stop doing this buddy
Why they taste sooo good
I driken a bleach yestered day
FF Kingsglaive was actually real good. But it's also almost 10years
It'd crazy to think that gollum evolved into an ape and ended up taking over the world. Guess he didn't need his precious
GREGBRODUDEMAN POSTED!!! EVERYONE CHEER!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
i was today years old when i realized that was the voice of steve buscemi in the final fantasy movie.
You did a great job Gregbrodudeman. I love your vids and you've done oustanding here. I appreciate the lego island music at the end lol
Polar Express wasn't meant to be scary but it still managed to give younger me nightmares.
Blud changed the title😂😂😂😂
It was uncanny valley is disturbing
Edit: he did it again
*No one will believe you*
@@GregBroDudeMan hi im a big fan of you
@@GregBroDudeMan lol
@@GregBroDudeMan if you think that nobody will then pin me
@@GregBroDudeMan and you changed it again blud
I used to watch polar express every year at christmas, now I can't stand looking at it because of the animation😭
The animatronic baby they had first for Twilight was much much worse
I’m working on my own animated analog horror short film right now! I’m actually really excited😎
Neo vs a thousand Agent Smith will NEVER not be cool. The Marix trilogy will forever be my favourite films of all time.
I don't talk about the fourth.
12:08 that one looked a bit like a video game, so not to bad.
Dude you are so underrated. Love your reactions
With the eyes, I'm guessing it's the micromovements we have all over them and if you try to add them it looks worse in animation
I had a really stressful week, but your videos always cheer me up ^^
For some reason I misheard that as “me when I see Benton Frasier” and I was thinking you were into Mounties 😂 which, me too
25:17 This reminds me of animorphs but like, less goofy 😂
I agree with you on Tintin, I really enjoyed it a lot too.
YAY A NEW GREGBRODUDEMAN VIDEO JUST AS I GET COZY IN BED! HOW CAN TIS EVENING GET BETTER?!
So Alita’s eyes were an intentional choice by the director as an homage to Alita’s anime origins, Robert Rodriguez went on record to say it was a choice to take the anime eyes were familiar with and put them in a realistic setting, and they wove it into the lore of the movie for western audiences to make it more tangible that the cyborgs had those eyes for improved vision. It’s still weird looking but I appreciate them trying to honor the original series.
That side by side with you and young Robert Downey Jr 😂 You look a lot like him
YES IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS 👹👹👹👹
I think when it comes to CG actors being de-aged or recreated, it’s off because it’s based off people who we know. If you created an entirely new person, maybe it wouldn’t be so odd (today).
Yesss bro you chose some winners! And some movies i forgot about 😅
I hear that kid talking about trains and I wonder if Mandark still likes Deedee.
Moff Tarken is done so well for the time, I remember being so amazed at how little you could tell when the movie came out 👌 The Tin Tin style is honestly awesome too, agree with the Tin/Tin 😂
"Beowulf" was amazing on 3D in the cinema
DONT YOU DARE DISS ON BEOWOLF!! Thats THE movie right there. Not a single complaint for it. Not a single thing wrong with it. Peak cinema
all of you saying Alita should have had big eyes because it was an anime are seriously embarrassing me. big eyes in anime is a stylistic choice, it doesn't represent some alternate type of humans (or robots) that actually have massive eyes. watch literally any live action version of an anime that was made in japan
I love show and tell with Greg!
Aweeee 🥰 yes Greg, you’ve done a great job 🎉 thank you for creating this fun vid for us
I wanna see GegBroDudeMan next to a de-aged Edward Norton now.
What saved the FF movie was that they didn't try to model the actors that voiced the characters, they just did their own (which Square has always absolutely excelled at). The only point back in the day that I remember being egregious was when the dude yells while shooting from the back of the wrecked vehicle.
The Hulk one is honestly not bad at all except for the brief moment hat he moves as a human before the angle changes. You can suddenly see the weird floaty disconnect between the model and the environment.
"Uncanny" used to actually mean something...
Unlike Polar Express, I think Beowulf still holds up pretty well
nothing like new gregbrodudeman on a rainy fall day❤
big move making a massive Un skippable cutscene & calling it a movie🤣🤣🤣🤣
Motion capture and dead eyes, uncanny hell.
You missed Johnny Depp de-aging in Pirates of the Caribbean- Dead Men Tell no Tales
