Yeah, sounds like a 'Not fit for purpose' lawsuit. Because the entire point of the cover is to sacrifice itself to protect the battery (within reason). So if it doesn't even survive a scratch, and consequently writes off the entire car, it's a design fault for which the manufacturer should be responsible.

This is a point that doesn’t seem to get discussed… internal combustion engines and hybrids are so efficient it doesn’t make sense to force car companies to make electric cars. I used to see cars belching smoke and exhaust, but cars built in the last 20 years are very efficient and clean running.

It's the manufacturer best interest to not remove that cover and simply claim that it will catch fire and explode. That way, a write-off will simply open the path for a new sale.
I would certainly go further to put an expiration date on every ev battery, let's say 4 years, hardcode the entire battery to only accept a genuine one, and double the price on replacements. Can you imagine the profits?

@@pedrodaniellopesferreira2916 I certainly wouldn't put it past them, we are living in a capitalistic society after all. But more important of all, no one is willing to take the risk of "what-ifs" scenarios with liability being the main culprit. Even at the slightest hint of minor potential damage, its a risk. And as for why it costs so much, well...profit. Hyundai is famous for this. Sell you a car for lower price, sometimes losing money, and in return someone somewhere down the line of ownership, somebody has to pay up.

the bad publicity for Hyundai / KIA is going to cost them far more than $60k CAD. Thank you for this story, I was seriously considering buying an EV in 2024, this slapped me back to reality. One thing to also mention, ICBC cost for EV are on average 30% higher than gasoline equivalent due to expensive EV parts and difficulty sourcing. So if you don’t drive much, insurance could take away most of your gas savings anyways

    • @kenchow8213

Sorry, but I can't believe that a 30% higher insurance rate defeats the gas savings (~$2,200/year @ 15km/year) with BC having the highest gas prices in North America and among the lowest electricity rates. Maybe if your annual mileage is much lower than the average driver or if you have very high insurance due to many accidents/driving infractions.

There's no way for a dealer to "check it", because an impacted battery likely shows no signs of damage UNTIL it explodes. The manuals for battery electric power tools says "do not use a battery that has been dropped". Running over something in the road that hits your car's underbody is common, so really this reflects a flaw in battery vehicles themselves. Would minor car accidents be considered "battery impacts" too?

Terrible take@@phillyphil1513 . Kyle IS NOT LIVING ABOVE HIS MEANS. None of this was (ie, Payment, Gas, Insurance, Maintenance). He got caught in a bad situation because the dealership didn't know how to properly handle a scratch on a battery cover. Some tech at the dealership was covering his ass because he didn't want to risk liability if there possibly was something wrong with the battery. And the replacement price is insanely high for some reason not explained in the video. The battery is maybe 1/3-1/2 of a total EV car price, so maybe $20-30,000 tops. To have a battery replacement that high is hard to explain, maybe Kia didn't made any because they didn't expect anyone to need one for 5 years. This is all the dealership's and Kia's mistakes, not Kyle. They only thing he did wrong was to trust the dealership.

I'm saving $10g every 100,000 km on fuel with my 7 seater model y Long range vs my old mini van (went from $600/month for gas to $150/month for electricity). Battery replacement for Tesla model y Long range is $15g and warranty is 190,000 km. Even if it goes bad at end of warranty I'm still ahead. After 300,000 km Tesla average fleet degradation is 12%. There is a tone of misinformation out there plus these wired sensational stories get pushed to the top of media. The problem we have here, and for all electric vehicles is that the manufacturers are applying their usual 1000%+ markup for spare parts, to the batteries.
It is patently obvious that the replacement batteries do not cost more than the car brand new.
There is a disconnect than can be easily addressed by the bean counters at the manufacturers whereby they only make 100-200% markup on cost replacement batteries and keep the customers happy - surely cheaper to retain a customer than the literal billions of dollars they spend on marketing to attract the customer in the first place.
It never ceases to amaze me, the ability and efficiency of the motor vehicle industry to turn a happy customer who will advocate for you and be a repeat customer, into a disgruntled one that won't!

No, it's not that simple--it depends on the contract the manufacturer has with the battery supplier. Often parts suppliers make very little margin on their sale to the car maker for the original part, because they intend to make a LOT of money on sales of spare parts down the road. Also, many EVs are government subsidized (I wonder why) which helps to lower the initial price, but those subsidies do not apply to spare parts. That is at least part of what is going on here. EVs are NOT a good deal in the long run.

Shouldn't there be sensors for the battery cells that can determine the health of the cells? Tesla (not a fan of Elon here) have sensors that tell the battery when it's too cold or too warm, the least a car maker can do is configure software that allows them to determine each cell's viability. If I'm paying $60k for a battery, it'd better read me a bedtime story & tuck me in.

Probably is subsidized by the OEM economy of scale plays a huge role and if it's not there things get expensive. So internal heavily subsidies the evs. I don't know if they release net profit per vehicle model but is gonne be negative.
I think Ford releases these numbers and they loos~ 30% of the price of the EV per car and they carry that with the profits from the ice fleet.

It doesn't just affect EVs though. I know plenty of GM owners who have had to spend anywhere from $15-35k on replacement engines not covered under warranty (diesels), just as I know dozens on Hyundai and Kia owners who have had to spend $7-9k on replacement four bangers for their shitbox SUVs, and anyone who knows a VW touareg gen 1 owner will know all their horror stories.
The cost for a completely failed EV battery would be significant. But this is not a case of a failed battery (notice that "Kyle" doesn't even mention whether he saw any alarms or noticed any loss of range on the display), just a dented protective/skid plate. Whether anything more than a replacement plate was needed has not been determined. Kyle got scammed by his dealer and insurer. I feel bad for him, but you never ever trust a dealer's claim on warranty work, much less their announcement that "you will be liable if the vehicle explodes". That is just madness.

It should be illegal to sell a car whose battery cover is no more than a beauty cover, which cannot effectively withstand the impact of a rock, a piece of loose asphalt or other debris on the road - these are inevitable events that occur in everyday driving.

Yeah, having any part of a car exceed the total price of the car sounds ridiculous, and should probably be addressed by regulation of some kind.
However, there are extenuating factors to consider:
      - the battery is a structural part of any EV, usually built as a complete assembly almost the size of the car itself (width and lengthwise). It also weighs more than half of the car.
      - as such, shipping a battery is extremely expensive, since they need to be shipped individually from an assembly plant to the workshop, and take up a massive amount of container space and require a lot of packaging and safety measures as they're essentially bombs.
      - shipping cost, disposal fees and profit margin is part of the price of the replacement part on a repair quote
      - spare batteries can be hard to get as virtually all of them go into cars at assembly plants and as such there is an additional hint of inflation in the price due to that.
The way to fix this situation would be to require that all EV batteries be made as repairable assemblies of standardized battery modules no larger than some manageable size. Tesla, Hyundai, Toyota, etc. would all need to accept the same, easily replaceable battery modules into their packs. That way, damaged EV battery housings could be addressed by shipping over a new housing, without actual batteries in them, and recycling programs for the actual battery modules as well as a healthy aftermarket could be established.
As it currently stands, the EV business is killing both the planet and the business space at a record rate as they try to maximize their own profits.

    • @peterjohnson9438
      @peterjohnson9438 9 місяців тому

...to clarify the "modular battery" idea, imagine the inside of an EV battery housing consisting of multiple banks of devices two thirds of the size of an average 12 volt car battery. Those devices, or modules, could be replaced individually as they age as standard maintenance. It wouldn't matter who made the modules themselves as long as the power rating would match the car's specification. Any garage could fix any EV battery by opening it up and replacing the internal modules.
This would be the way to go forward, and is actually very close to how EV batteries are a put together internally, but the manufacturers will fight any attempt at standardization tooth and nail, probably citing safety concerns.. because right now, they have complete and total control over the supply and pricing of the batteries for their cars.

    • @yodaiam1000
      @yodaiam1000 9 місяців тому

@@peterjohnson9438 It is just Tesla that has a structural battery. The labour costs were quoted at less than $1600 so the removal and replacement is relatively minor.
You get money returned when recycling an EV battery. They generate what is called black mass which is about half the cost of the battery. If the battery is just degraded and not damaged, it is given a second life in grid storage before it goes for recycling. Used batteries are actually quite valuable.
The batteries are made by LG and off the same lines as the batteries that go into new cars. There is some additional handling and shipping fees. The shipping issues are actually less than what you have from a car. Don't forget that they have to ship the battery to Hyundai and then Hyundai has to ship the car. They are shipped in a low state of charge to minimize risk.
ICE cars are doing a much better job at killing the planet. There is no question that EVs are a better option. The human race has to stop burning fossil fuels and this is one step in the process.
The whole issue here is that the dealerships are overcharging on the parts by a factor of 4 to deliberately discourage the adoption of EVs. That is why Hyundai Canada is now telling its dealerships to involve them on all battery replacements.

    Great video guys!
It exposes a quite few things about ev manufacturers:
    1. The long term car warranty means nothing if it voids if batteries are impacted. One would imagine any accident would impact the battery.
    2. The evs would be worthless once batteries warranty expires or whatever you have an accident.
    3. 8-10 years down the road. It 16:50 would have millions of ev carcass all over earth which would do a lot of harm to the environment.

Excellent video as always, you guys! Poor Kyle, I feel for him.
I’m an old guy, and honestly, I just don’t understand this rush to go to EV and/or hybrid vehicles. I get to save the environment, I get fuel cost, I get all of those things, but let’s face it cars today and trucks for that matter are so much more fuel efficient than they were back when I first started driving in the 80s. I think of the very first car I owned a 1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo with a big Honkin V8 in it, that used leaded fuel, lol.
I realize I’m probably being somewhat hyperbolic, but the reality is, and your channel validates this, consumers are buying big honking, SUVs, and great big cars and trucks to haul their family, or stuff around. It’s just ridiculous!
If we want to make the world, a safer, cleaner, and more environmentally, friendly place, let’s build more little Honda Civic hatchbacks like we used to do back in the day. That’s all anybody really needs. All these soccer moms that I see at my local school, dropping kids off and picking kids up every day in giant pick up trucks and SUV and sitting for 10 or 15 minutes with their engines idling makes me laugh.
No one seems too concerned about the environment when they’re making the school run, lol.
Electric vehicles will probably get there someday, and there will be teething problems. However, at this point, I just don’t think enough analysis has really been done to the cause and effect of the switch to consumers, and to the environment.
What is the cost going to be to bring more Hydro electricity plants online, where is that power going to come from?
What’s the economic impact going to be to consumers, employers, and companies as we move from fossil fuels to electricity. How many thousands or even millions of people may potentially be out of work? What impact does that have to the global economy? How does that affect the environment?
Anyway, sorry for the rant, you guys are amazing, love the channel!

EVs cost a lot less to operate and they perform a lot better than gas cars. And now they're pretty much price competitive. In the US, you can buy a tesla model 3 for under $30k when including the $7500 tax credit. It cost less per mile driven than a civic and it's a lot bigger. EVs aren't selling well because of the environment. Rather it's because they now make economic sense. Outside of the 1 in a million chance you have to replace the battery after a year and the dealership has no idea what they're doing.

The current going rate for EV battery pack costs is about $140 per kilowatt hour, the ionic has a 77 kWh battery, that comes out to less than $11,000 for a brand new battery. That does not take into account the core return you would have on the original battery, which should be a few thousand dollars at minimum since most likely all of those cells are viable to be reused.

Battery packs are more expensive than $10K but manufacturers like Teslas will take your old pack and battery modules and provide credit so the final net cost might only be $10-18K compared to $26K for a brand new pack. These modules are reused if good for refurbished packs or for solar storage.
