We live at Union Pacific milepost 305 on the Canyon Sub where the old Layman Siding used to be. Passenger trains used to stop here and passengers would walk across a suspension bridge to take a meal at Camp Layman. We are about 5 miles west of Blairsden which is modeled on this layout. Beautiful rendering of the country along the WP Feather River Route. Rail fans can have a heyday starting at the Portola Yard and Railroad Museum, going west along the Middle Fork of the Feather River, around the Williams Loop, across the Keddie Wye and down the Feather River Canyon. Thank you for sharing this layout which is a great depiction of a wonderful area in its heyday.
Jim is one of the NICEST model railroad guys I have ever had the pleasure to meet in person. I hope that he is doing well. And he s a great and skilled model builder.
I have watched this video a number of times, thank you for the inspiration, even though I model the C&O the realism you achieve is impressive. Just wondering if you roster any "big womp" 2-8-8-2's?
What a superb rendition of the WP and California logging. Love the Keddie Wye. Wow. Cool touches as well -- the tree growing through the roof, the guy riding under an umbrella on the shay's tender. Wonderful sense of humor, Jim, incorporated into your railroad. Scenery and buildings are fantastic. Hats off to you. Good good stuff.
For sure - I love the dedication to the prototype in the layout. Keddie Wye on the layout is instantly indentifiable and so impressive to see in person.
Great layout Mr. Dias. Well done structures, landscape, bridges and all the detail, I especially love the logging portion of the layout. Thank you TSG!
Another lovely Video John, please thank Jim for sharing his wonderful Railway with us, and yes, what a great Inspiration for every Model Railway Engineer. I especially liked the Tin Sheds, Jim has really captured the Atmosphere of this lovely Railway, a real Labour of Love, must be great to operate too.
As I’m working on my 1910-1935 layout I can’t help but be in awe of your detailed rolling stock and motive power. And the layout itself is something to feel accomplished of. It’ll likely take me years to finish my layout and the current home I’m in plan to eventually one day hopefully turn it into a railroad club and further model the GCL.
Great layout Jim. Your craftsmanship shows a high level of detail which makes your railway come alive. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing. It has given me a lot of ideas for my son's lay out.
Congratulations John. Ken Patterson gave you a shout out on his show, Whats Neat this week. So much good information from both of your channels and show.
One of the really cool things I have discovered while interviewing people with layouts like this one is that they usually end up becoming something of an expert because they have to research a lot to get the details right!
Thanks for the compliments and for watching. I am sure Jim will be floored when he sees all the great feedback and positive reviews his layout tour has garnered!
TSG Multimedia could you please direct him to the O Scale Resource online magazine Jan/Feb issue of this year? I did a piece of a WP Harriman baggage for my Exposition Flyer. No one has done the Expo correctly in O but some of us adore the train. Please tell him this was very inspiring!
Wonderful layout ! I enjoyed the detailing and operations, but especially the history around the Kedie area. I lived in Paradise and would take my young son up the canyon to Portola to visit the museum and have pizza nearby. On the way back each time, we would stop at Kedie and explore in the area of the main siding and wonder what was there during the heyday of the WP. Now I can almost see it. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent job of video taping this spectacular model railroad. Jim Diaz has done a superb job of creating a realistic rendition of this segment of the Western Pacific and it is a truly magnificent layout. Five stars to the model railroad and the video taping of it. Thank you for sharing this with the UA-cam community! Mike
I love this layout... I was born in Quincy california and my dad worked in portola California so I grew up and I remember seeing keddie in the 90s and the feather river canyon
Ahhh yes, well... Next week is the video about my first-ever ops session. I don't know if it will be "hardcore ops" enough for you, but I know for sure that something I am working on for release in the near future will be right up your alley if you like serious ops!
I\'m not sure but ,if anyone else wants to uncover how to build a model railway layout try Pycanta Model Railroaders Protocol (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my buddy got amazing results with it.
I think this just might be my favorite layout tour yet! There were some beautiful scenery and structures here. My only dislikes stemmed from my pet peeves, such as chuffs not being synchronized with drivers, inconsistent coupler height (thank Dan for instilling that in me), and some track being right up to the edge of the fascia. But like I said, those are just my pet peeves and not a complaint about the layout.
I love the logging camp! The Shea is my favorite steam locomotive in the world! Their not fast but they are strong. What they lack in speed they make up in horse power.
@@tsgmultimedia I may have spelled it wrong. It's a steam locomotive that was used primarily for logging. It doesn't have large drive wheels or drive rods like normal steam locomotives. It has pistons that spin a drive shaft that turns the wheels on the front and rear trucks. It was used for logging because it could take sharp curves that a conventional steam locomotive can't take. It's truck arrangements worked almost like the trucks on a diesel engine of today. I hope that was helpful. Thank you for asking. Keep up the good work yall and may your railway always stay busy.
My sister in laws name is LeShea and we all call her Shea that's why I spelled it that way because I wasn't sure. Thank you for correcting my spelling.
Wow what a layout!! Can definitely tell it was a labor of love for Jim. Impressive just doesn't seem to cover it. Since it took so long to build, is he going through withdrawal once it was finished?
You know, I didn't really ask him that. I know that for other modelers with "completed" layouts such as this, they always find something to work on, whether it be upgrading structures or building new rolling stock... There's always something else to build, if even for a display case.
I would assume the line today is operated by the Union Pacific. And I have seen another program of the feather river canyon, but with mostly bnsf locomotives, and a cameo of Union Pacific 844.
TheNw1218 Yes. Union Pacific operates through the Feather River Canyon. The line that branches off to the left at Keddie is the BNSF Gateway Sub. Once upon a time it was a joint line with BN and UP. Prior to that was GN and WP.
Haha I totally believe it! I hope it didn't come off the wrong way. I just had to get that off my chest, as it has always been that way, and it didn't seem like most people really knew!
I like seeing a layout, that is essentially complete and extremely well executed. I am hardly impressed when I see a layout featured that has swathes of incomplete or non-existent scenery or stand in structures. Show me your layout, when it is closer to done or at least don't show what has yet to be done; unless you are showing such sections to make a point or teach something.
Jim,
Thank you for building one of the BEST model railroads I’ve ever seen!

Authentic landscape, trees, buildings and dirt nice job
And Definitely a source of inspiration. As a modeler who has a total of 10 feet of track this definitely makes me want to bust out some walls!
Kudos as well on the narration. You really let us appreciate your work and train operation.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow, this is a wonderful layout.
Beautiful work...... thanks for sharing.......
That is truly one of the best layouts I've seen. Stellar job. Five star work of art.
Thanks Joe. It's also among the best I have seen. And I have seen a few now. :)

Jim did an excellent job on his layout and on the video!
I really feel I got a marvelous guided tour of a wonderful miniaturized slice of history.
So much to see, watching it once is not enough.
Thank you.

Magnificent layout! 😎
Congratulations!
Dream Layout!!
Just a gorgeous layout. You can easily see how many thousands of hours he must have invested in his creation. Wow factor 10!
Yes. There is a reason why most modelers don't keep track of the time they spent on projects like this!
Great layout Mr. Dias. Well done structures, landscape, bridges and all the detail, I especially love the logging portion of the layout. Thank you TSG!
All the thanks and credit go to Jim for his hospitality and support! Oh, and for having such an awesome layout!

That's a quality achievement. Very believable and relaxing to watch. Appreciate the filming also. Thanks
You've built one heck of a layout
absolutely stunning, the all brass passenger #1 was fantastic to watch roll by.
Very nice layout Jim with good detail.
It sure is, and Jim's a super guy too.
Just a great job , Thanks for this video.
Congratulations John. Ken Patterson gave you a shout out on his show, Whats Neat this week. So much good information from both of your channels and show.
Hi Mike thanks. P.S. Dan had nothing to do with this one. :D

Easy mistake to make!
Amazing, such attention to detail. Great Video TSG!!

Your talents as a videographer have never been in doubt in my book, this is another fine job, very nice layout on top of it all.
Next month's layout tour is also excellent. Just wait!
Wow! Truly a fantastic layout. So realistic and highly detailed. Thanks for the tour. 🚂
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! If you know anyone else who might enjoy it, please share!

RImodeler79 I agree! Well done!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! Please share it if you know anyone who might like the tour.

Awesome layout. Love the steam age. When steam still ruled the rails.
I love this layout... I was born in Quincy california and my dad worked in portola California so I grew up and I remember seeing keddie in the 90s and the feather river canyon
Wow! A fabulous and inspiring layout. Well done!
Jen :-)
Wonderful.
Absolutely awesome, I'm really enjoying the new look to the Chanel ...thanks
Thanks TOM! Are you talking about the thumbnail photo when you refer to the "new look" to the channel?
NO, I am talking about the videos. content is much better....MUCH, looking forward to OPS videos...thats my passion

That was my thought, too!
Excellent job John
Thanks, John!
It's sad that dan left the channel, but I love how John keeps the channel alive, I really appreciate the hard work he does for the videos
Onward and upward. Expect more new and improved content as we roll merrily forward.

BEAUTY VIDEO AS BEAUTY DETAIL IN HOW BUILD AND OPERATION AND GREAT TO WATCHING. THANK YOU
very nice detail work !!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing
Jim did an amazing job with his layout. I'm glad you like the video!
Beautiful layout Jim! I love the Feather River line and spent a lot of summers at Lake Almanor and watching the Geeps haul revenue up there
Cool, thanks!
incredible work, I'm so impressed by your dedication
That is really impressive.
Beeautiful Layout!!! I have several HO WP Brass Steam that I'd love to run here...
fantastic video 👍, super cool 😎 layout with nice details. 👏
Jim did an incredible job on his layout. On par with the best I have seen in my travels. :)
Really looks nice....
Awesome layout
amazing layout, thanks for the tour. I like how you showed where the train was on the map!
Really like watching your layout ✌👍👍
Awesome! It was really great to hang out with Jim for the production, too! He's a good guy as well as an excellent modeler.
Very impressive Jim. Joe F
Very Nice !!!!

Nice layout!

If you had to pick a favorite, this would make a great candidate!
Couplers being mismatched in height happens more in real life than a lot of people think
Nice to see you using the KD magnetic coupling features. Pains me to see the number of modelers who cut those pins, throwing away this great feature.
I love the logging camp! The Shea is my favorite steam locomotive in the world! Their not fast but they are strong. What they lack in speed they make up in horse power.

As a WP fan, I can't give this enough likes!
Indeed. Well, since YT only allows you to like it once, why not share it with other folks so they will also "like" it. :D

Me gusto mucho la escena del gato y el perro. Por favor una pregunta : la locomotora 2-8-0 (consolidación) que marca es??

How do you number your trains? Off the locomotive number?
Im getting the energy to bring out my UP 8444 with dual speakers in the tender
Wow, how does he get brass to run so well?
Some folks know how to work on brass models. :)
