They can and do take their armour off, though this is a ritual just as involved as putting it on. They can also go weeks and months without taking it off, if that's what their deployment or general circumstances require. How much Astartes take their armour off, and for how long, can vary between chapters with different traditions. Some chapters only wear have theirs when deployed, and remove it when they leave combat to R&R in a safe zone, whether that's a Chapter warship in space or a secure fortress on the ground. Or chapter traditions may dictate that Astartes only remove their armour when there's good, practical reason to do so: for repairs or ceremonies, or when they are being issued a new set with more bling because of a promotion of rank or position. Other chapters still might dictate that their Astartes have the same set of armour throughout their career, and only remove it when absolutely necessary: when the Astartes needs to undergo medical procedures, or when they've miraculously survived despite their armour taking damage that requires extensive repair, even if removing the armour would make lesser repairs or other downtime activities more practical.
"He's basically a walking tank" Oh he is now better than any tank you've ever seen, and he's only one marine, imagine when they need to bust out the entire chapter of them lol.
They actually take their armor off for routines that don't require it, and even some chapters take their time off to do something else that isn't training and killing, Blood Angels for example are painters, Ultramarines are politicians, Imperial Fists are architects etc, etc. I'd guess even for some types of training, they wouldn't put their armor on, but would use the lighter armor that Scouts use.
I believe its like a fitting ceremony to attune the armour to his body, like a fitting and measuring. Making sure the armour is comfortable for him. This is done semi often depending on their equipment.
honestly depends on the chapter what they do once the job is done some take acid baths some fix there owen wargear some will be in it for months and train and only take it off if need
They can take the armour off after missions but some tend to keep it on, usually when a marine gets back from a battle and no missions are active they tend to take the armour off and put on a simple robe. But this can differ between chapters as different chapters have different traditions and/or rules.
The 30k board game is getting revamped. It already exists with its own ruleset like 40k. Btw this vid was outstanding, glad you reacted to it. Can't wait for space marine 2.
Depends on the Astartes with specific tasks and are they in war time or idle at their homeworld, fortress or perhaps battlebarg or ship not in transit of warp travel. In the books they describe Blood angel marines sparring against each other without their armour. Even Primarchs that "take a day off" drinking ( Horus/Leman Russ or doing administrative tasks ( Guilliman/Magnus). Some space marine like to remain in their armour to always be vigilant and patrouille area's or ship decks^^ For dreadnoughts its WAY DIFFERENT! Dreadnoughts are just coffins with a severely woundend space marine in them on constant life support, attach arms/legs/rocket launchers/gattling guns etc etc on them and they are... wel... walking tanks that can take much more beating. Chaos space marine: Depends on the legion but many are fuzed with their armour because of demonic possession by Khorne/Nurgle/Slaanesh^^ i don't think that goes for the Thousands Sons legion that follow Tzeentsch, yes they have like big helmets and other ceremonial things on their armour... but its not fuzed with their bodies like the other legions that follow the other chaos gods^^ Good to hear from ya again on Warhammer 30k/40k!! The Emprah protects!!
Well chaos marines do fuse with their armor those of the thousand sons are turned to dust and are permanently made into undead soulless living armor but a few of the thousand sons are still flesh and blood
In combat or on a campaign the suit can be worn for a day or for years, decades, even centuries in some instances. there's some self-cleaning on the inside (not much, but enough to take care of the funk and anything that could possibly make them sick) of the bodysuit next to their skin.
(Edits for clarification) Space Marines actually rarely need to sleep due to one of the extra organs implanted during the process of becoming an Astartes. The organ allows them to shut off parts of their brain that need to rest while they continue to work, so a Space Marine sleeping is incredibly rare, and even then it's only for a few hours. Because of this Space Marines are pretty much constantly in action, and are thus almost always armored. Yes, the armor can be removed, but it requires what amounts to a NASCAR pit crew (although it can be performed by a single tech priest with the right equipment or a tech marine if they aren't busy) to do so. And the only times an Astartes will be seen without his armor falls roughly into 4 categories: 1) The Marine in question is off duty in their chapter's fortress monastery for an extended period of time. 2) The Marine has just come back from a successful campaign and is getting his armor repaired. 3) The Marine was injured and needs surgery. 4) The Marine was grievously wounded and is being shoved into a dreadnought sarcophagus. 5) The Marine has died and his body was able to be retrieved for the removal of gene-seed and funerary rites.
It looks damaged because the empire almost never produce new armor/weapons and technology, they re-use old stuff almost all the time. There are units in the empire which job is only to collect weapons, armor and material from killed soldiers
when he started talking about getting a green beret i was like "holy shit a green beret?" and then i remembered that im american and our green beret is very different
They in fact do not wear the armor forever unless they receive a specific chaos mutation. When not on a potential battlefield (Like their main ship/monastery) they normally wear robes with iconography of their chapter like monks.
Can we talk about how badass this space marine is, the two gold studs he has means that he has served for 200 years and since he’s a primaries marine, that means he also crossed the rubicon primaries which is a very painful and difficult procedure, and he isn’t even a sergeant
Okay so: 1. Space Marines regularly take off their power armor in the safety of their ships etc, so that they can do repairs, and after every battle their serfs catalogue every damage upon it. 2. The thing with Space Marines and their helmets, and why they regularly take them off during combat, is a sign of strength and valor for them. They show their prowess basically. "I dont need a helmet to survive!"
They can take the armor off plus the balck undersuit that he puts on first is the Black carapace it allows them to interface with the armors systems you have to remember this is powered armor it not only protects them it also enhances their already enhanced strength and speed and the backpack holds the suits main power source that powers the armor a miniature fusion reactor.
That's not the black carapace but the skinsuit that serves as a mesh and interface between the black carapace and the power armor itself. I've also seen authors refer to it as a plug suit. The black carapace as said below is very much under an Astartes flesh, the skinsuit just provides another layer of protection, insulation with a vacuum seal that helps him survive any atmospheric conditions on top of connecting with the black carapace.
They can spend months in their armor if they have to. I believe they recycle their sweat and urine, as well as perform other life sustaining functions. The armor looks scuffed up because alot of armor is passed down over 1000s of years.
This is the full ceremony done after major upgrades, repairs or maintenance where the armor has been fully disassembled by the Mechanicus Artisans. They can remove it, and often do for minor maintenance and repairs along with cleaning the internal life support hookups. The novels and lore often talk of the space marines wearing simple robes in their chapter's colors. Some of the heavier armors like Terminator armor require help to get out of.
Robute Guiliman, the primarch of the Ultramarines (the faction featured in this short), IS stuck in his armor. if he takes it off he will die from a previously sustain wound.
A Space Marines life is generally split between training/on a ship going somewhere/at the base, and in the field. They will generally armour up when deploying into the field, and stay in the armour until the campaign is done and they are extracted. That might be a few hours, or months. At the end of the campaign they will return to base, and remove the armour, and any repairs might be carried out then before the next deployment. But spare parts and even the technical skills are in short supply, so the armour us often a bit run down and also sacred.
Here's a little tidbit about the armor I forget exactly the mark or model but in one of the book stories I listen to a space Marine was able to survive inside his armor in stasis for over 10,000 years
Between deployments they take the armour off. They CAN keep the armour on for years, but it's a bit like when you get the chance to take your boots off and Change your socks on deployment. Also when on deployment they can switch one side of their brain off at a time so they don't have to fully lose consciousness when they sleep
If I can recall from the death watch rule book it takes around 30 minutes to put the armour on and also take it off with the help of 3 serfs, it do be a long ass process 😂
I know this is a couple of months old, but the silver studs in his represent several years of service. I like silver is 25 a piece, don't quote me on that though. The armor is constantly repaired, time and time again. However, if need be, they can stay suited for a long time. They have a bunch of extra organs and some of them act like filters, reusing his waste as nutrients. I have no ideal how it works, but it works. So yea, they aren't pulling off their armor for a bathroom break, but on the ships, they might not be wearing armor.

If they take the armor off can depend on the type of marine. Like there is that Emperor's personal guard who just stand on guard for hundreds of years. IIRC
Most armour is removable, they may wear it for days or weeks at a time though. It was scuffed up because it is not new, even new Astartes would be lucky to get new armour. Some can get stuck in their armour for some reason, like when Roboute Guilliman was forced to wear the Armour of Fate for a few years. Also, a Dreadnought acts as a sarcophagus/life support for terminally injured Space Marines, very few ever leave it once placed inside, those that do either need to be put into another life support system or die shortly after. For a good 40K trailer check out the one for 'Space Marine 2'
"little implants in him" LOL He'd got 20 new organs and has been training and growing since he was about 10. His torso has a hard carapace under the skin that the sockets are set into that connect to his nervous system. That links to the artificial muscles that moves the suit, so it moves with him. The suit could be hundreds of years old, they're treated like religious relics. They can take them on and off faster, this sort of ritual is more for the start of a big battle to be sure everything is working right and properly blessed. overall he'd weight about a ton fully loaded, but that backpack cancels some of that with an anti gravity suspensor under the reactor
If iam not mistaken this dude is armoured with Mark X Power Armour that indicates that this dude is not "Ordinary" Astarte but a Primaris Space Marine... And yes Astartes or Primaris like in this case take of their armor but it takes a little time to do so...
Someone prob already answered this but some space marines, terminators included don't wear their helmets as part of a fear tactic but also saying they don't need all their armour to kill you
Space marines can remove their power armor whenever they want or need. Terminator armor, because it's much heavier and intricate, needs a full team of chapter serfs, tech preists and servitors to get it on and off. The reason why the armor looks scuffed is because it may have seen some superficial battle damage and the chapter serfs just painted over it. Much more serious damage would have to be extensively repaired.
Given how lengthy this armoring is, I just imagine having to do this to several hundred thousand space-marines. Like a DMV, after each you got a secretary with a boston accent yelling out, "Now, armourin' ticket numba 15,391, please come to tha front desk."
It’s more of an environmental suit so for example astronauts who have to do manual work outside in space be it on the moon or In the void, where the suit can be taken off where they might wear things like a garb or robe or even a special uniform made for them depending on the circumstances, however they do live the majority of their time in their armor where things like waste management can be done via an internal toilet system as well as multiple functions of the armor, which also includes combat stims like morphine, pain killers, to stimulants which ensures the prolonged activity of a marine (its like when you had about a hundred cups of coffee where your brain is full of caffeine), the armor also houses a liquid food storage system which can implant food into the user’s body without having to eat or drink, but due to the marines augmented metabolism a space marine can survive far longer without food or water even without their armor, as for the armors other features they mostly depend on what field of specializations they do for example a tech marine would be equipped with better sensors packages as well as an enhanced optic sensor, utility claw and so on, apothecary’s carry vanbraces which are equipped with things such as a drill, saw, narthisium which is like a plunger which is used to remove a fallen marines gene seed. And so on, a space marines armor uses micro fibers, and micro motors which are all numerologicaly connected directly to the marine allowing the marine to do things as if he wasn’t even wearing armor so for example imagine driving a car with a steering wheel, vs driving a car with just your mind with preprogrammed instructions
Not every person who is selected to become a space marine make it through the process. Most die some make half way but for one reason or another they don’t make they become servants for the chapter
Space Marines are able to stay operational for about 2 weeks without rest, so I would imagine they take the armour off every 1-2 weeks for repairs and rest
Some space marine artificer armor has explosive bolts and other tech that allow them to instantly drop their armor if they ever need to during a serious emergency. I would imagine wearing power armor is comforting, not comfortable. Power armor is enormously complex and requires special maintenance and prayers. Some armor is millennia old. I would imagine most chapters only wear power armor when their duty demands it, otherwise you're putting a huge ammont of wear and strain on armor they dont really know how to make more of or sometimes even fix!
No they have an organ implant that can shut off surtan parts of the brain at a time so it can rest while they are still active. There's some cases of like 100 days straight fighting during hells reach if I remember right
Taking the armour off is possible. It may not be practical in warzone/high risk environment. The implants are Black Carapace, basically Astrates/Armour interface. So the armour is like a second skin, felt and neurologically conected via the interface. The black underarmour is more "everyday" than a full ceramite plate and could do as protection in a pinch, but... Not ideal to fight in it. It is a kevlar vest to frontal armor of a Leopard tank. Still, on board of their battle barges, in transit between wars, those hulking monstrosities may chill and drink beer in their pants, sure... Albeit technically they do not have to remove their plate, as it has full body function support system built in. Some chapter may be less likely to do so, as they see the armour as a gift from the Emperor (not only Black Templars, but those have a sacred tradition of chaining their weapons to their armour, which makes removing it almost imposible...), other have complex cultural taboos regarding their kit (Carcaredones could kill a serf or lower ranking Astartes who did as much as touched their weapons by mistake)... The fact that Space Marines, while technically able to procreate, have a very low libido resulting from the Geneseed, makes for one less reason to remove the armour...
Warhammer vet here. 1) Astartes do not take off there armor the entire time they're on deployment. From receiving activation orders, taking his oath of moment, the ship ride there, the war, and the ship ride home, he is in the armor. 2) An Astartes requires substantially less active sleep than a human as they have the ability to put single sections of their brains to sleep at a time while still remaining conscious. The only time you'll see him sleeping is when he needs to rest the cerebellum. The longest record of an Astartes sleep deprivation is 362 days. This is held by the Crimson Fists chapter while defending their home world is an active firefight they entire time.
They don’t wear it all the time, on their time off they don’t wear it or when it needs repair. As for walking tanks, sorta, but if they tackle a normal human, humans can turn into paste
I like to think some space marines use salvaged and recycled armor components. They already have to have apothecaries harvest gene-seed and the progenoid glands upon an astartes's death, it would surprise me if the armor is salvaged as well.
Prior to Primaris each suit was made up of a mish-mash of different components from new and ancient armours. Now it's all technically new but we're getting some artificier stuff.
it can come on and off as needed as it is a sealed environment they and they have been trained to be comfortable being in it for extended durations thus it is not uncommon for a marine to be within their armor for most of their time. a good example that I have seen used to describe them would be the still suits from dune.
They can and do take their armor off. Sometimes it needs repair, sometimes it needs to be checked. But they don't have to take it off, since it feels less like an armor to them and more like another skin layer, thanks to neurological connection through The Interface (Black Carapace). They also technically don't need sleep, a good while back you reacted to space marine creation, it's mentioned that they can shut down parts of their brain at a time and it works like sleep. Also - why is the armor look scuffed and damaged? That's because it probably belonged to another astartes before, armors like that are not particularly easy to make and maintain, so if a space marine dies and his body is recovered they not only try to salvage the gene-seed organs, but also their equipment. Recycling, if you will.
They dint bother with minor scuffs as they arnt trying to look pristine but their also one space marine chapter that specificly only repairs needed damage leaving the authetics of all the heavy scars and indents from previous damage as a message to whoever faces them of all they have survived and so what chance do they think thye have?
In the 3rd person shooter “Space Marine” our hero doesn’t wear his helmet and I strongly suspect this is so we can relate to him better and watch him ‘act’ in cutscenes but according to canon a Marine would be at a massive disadvantage without his helmet and probably get his head popped when fighting against The Imperium’s toughest enemies.
I pretty sure that space marine already in service for 200 years the fact he have those 2 metal dots on his forehead. Also talking about weight space marine weight majority come from their physical form not the armor itself
I hear the book soul hunter about a group of nightlord Marines. And there are times in the training room where they don't wear their armor. And that are heretic Astartes.
They take off the Armor between warzones because believe it or not even the Astartes need to relax and to sleep..... as for putting it on and off the under suit they can put on and off themselves but the armor itself needs to be placed on them.
Most of the answers have already been put up in your comment section, but theres one i didn't see. "why is the armor already scuffed up?" Each piece of tech in the Imperium varies in age, but alot of it is hundreds, sometimes even thousands of years old. the marine in the vid has two service studs in his forehead, meaning he has been an active marine for 200+ years. His armor is ATLEAST that old, each chapter has different degrees of wear and tear on thier gear depending on the chapter, and supply, for example every single salamander is also a blacksmith and craftsman, so alot of their wargear is in tip top condition as they forge it and often repair it themselves, ultramarines are politicians, governers, philosophers and so on when not actively fighting, so their gear would be mostly maintained by mechanicus and servitors, who due to their dogmatic techno-religion, would never fully rebuild or inovate as messing too much with a machine is seen as heretical, (this is why Cawl waited until Guillimen woke up before unveiling the primaris, because if he didnt have a living primarch backing him, he would have been immediately accused of heresy by his own order and they would have turned on him, thats why Cawl is so controversial especially amongst his own order) on top of that, alot of marinee prefer to leave their armor with marks frok battle if it doesnt change its effectiveness, "badges of honor" basically.
Just fyi, the silver studs above his eye denote him being a marine for 200 years so far. Each stud above the eye is 100 years. There are marines who have been in service for 1500 years. They are not immortal, just live a LONG time. To date in the lore, no marine has yet died of old age.
A smol tip. Even with timestamps in the video and stuff. Intro over 1 minute it stretching it. 30seconds still more than most people want. 10-20 seconds optimal. Your is 2minutes+

Depending on chapter former legion traditions and also the individual a space marine can remove his armor some don't but others do some do it because it's required or they don't practice constantly wearing it also the damage are battle marks to some space Marines if the battle mark got there then he won't repair it or if they do they mark were it was and wear the mark as a trophy or some it's shame there armor is them it's no different then there arm legs eyes or organs the suit is to them its well... Them I don't know how else to say it really
the armouring of a space marine video is literally just GW saying "look at what we can now do, animation wise, with our 'in house' team of animators", and also cause why not make a video about a space marine putting his armour on
space marines wear power armour when ever they feel like it... they even wear it for months or years, it has a waste disposal system but it needs to be manualy cleaned every now and then.
You should check out the warframe lore it's really good the only problem with it is that warframe has the opposite of warhammer where there's so much they could do with the story stuff and just don't but what is there is awesome.

"Nothing that big should move that fast..."
Or whenever they put on terminator armor
They actually take their armor off for routines that don't require it, and even some chapters take their time off to do something else that isn't training and killing, Blood Angels for example are painters, Ultramarines are politicians, Imperial Fists are architects etc, etc.
I'd guess even for some types of training, they wouldn't put their armor on, but would use the lighter armor that Scouts use.
In the grim dark future there is only war….and painting pretty pictures.
Some space marine like to remain in their armour to always be vigilant and patrouille area's or ship decks^^
For dreadnoughts its WAY DIFFERENT!
Dreadnoughts are just coffins with a severely woundend space marine in them on constant life support, attach arms/legs/rocket launchers/gattling guns etc etc on them and they are... wel... walking tanks that can take much more beating.
Chaos space marine: Depends on the legion but many are fuzed with their armour because of demonic possession by Khorne/Nurgle/Slaanesh^^ i don't think that goes for the Thousands Sons legion that follow Tzeentsch, yes they have like big helmets and other ceremonial things on their armour... but its not fuzed with their bodies like the other legions that follow the other chaos gods^^
Good to hear from ya again on Warhammer 30k/40k!!
(Edits for clarification)
Space Marines actually rarely need to sleep due to one of the extra organs implanted during the process of becoming an Astartes.
And the only times an Astartes will be seen without his armor falls roughly into 4 categories:
1) The Marine in question is off duty in their chapter's fortress monastery for an extended period of time.
I love warhammer and always enjoy when we get more videos about it
It looks damaged because the empire almost never produce new armor/weapons and technology, they re-use old stuff almost all the time. There are units in the empire which job is only to collect weapons, armor and material from killed soldiers
You gotta remember that these guys have regeneration Nuttered and Potty machines that turn into fuel and can stay up for long periods of time
" No flying babys when i got my green beret ". XD Made me giggle.
when he started talking about getting a green beret i was like "holy shit a green beret?" and then i remembered that im american and our green beret is very different
Okay so:
The black undersuit isn’t the black carapace. The black carapace is implanted under the skin, that where all the plugs on his skin are connected to
That's not the black carapace but the skinsuit that serves as a mesh and interface between the black carapace and the power armor itself. I've also seen authors refer to it as a plug suit.
The black carapace as said below is very much under an Astartes flesh, the skinsuit just provides another layer of protection, insulation with a vacuum seal that helps him survive any atmospheric conditions on top of connecting with the black carapace.
Imagine going through this process just to die in the battlefield in seconds.
That doesn’t happen to space marines, it is VERY hard to kill a space marine so they don’t die quick
They can live in the suit for basically forever. It depends on chapter what they wear on their "free time". Usually it's like monk robes.
I thought that Guilliman found a way to remove the Armor of Fate in one of the recent books? Or is he just looking for a way?
5:50 I was wondering that too, after what that character allegedly went through they could at least give him brand new armor plates!
Here's a little tidbit about the armor I forget exactly the mark or model but in one of the book stories I listen to a space Marine was able to survive inside his armor in stasis for over 10,000 years
You can be in stasis for an indefinite amount of time. With or without armour.
Rylanor!!! Loyalist Emperors Children in a dreadnought... That dude was a BAD ASS!!!
@@FenrisSulfr Yeah, too bad Fulgrim did him hella dirty.
4:46 Space Marines are so fast, in lore, that even without a helmet, it's basically impossible to headshot them.
IIRC
fun fact this space marine can weigh 1000 pounds and stand 9ft tall
Each Space marine has their own set of armour, this kind isn't a recruit, those studs in his head represent 100 years of service each, he's a veteran.
The title “Royal Marine” has to be the coolest sounding thing you can be.
When you are so cool that wearing you is actually a holy mass
They regularly take their armor off, that's why his armor is already scuffed and dented. He's probably a Veteran of a few hundred years of combat.
It’s said their armor all together is between 5-10 thousand pounds
Pour one out for that one Land Raider.
who knows how long it takes Tyberos to take off his armor, since it is very unique
Outside of armor they weigh 706lbs give or take and are about 8ft tall
These are the ultramarines, cream of the crop. Best of the best. My favorite too.
it can come on and off as needed as it is a sealed environment they and they have been trained to be comfortable being in it for extended durations thus it is not uncommon for a marine to be within their armor for most of their time. a good example that I have seen used to describe them would be the still suits from dune.
The shoulder pieces were probably retrieved from a dead ultramarine (space marine)
i have been waiting to see him react to this since it came out
The suit stays on, until BATTLE is done, it can be a day, it can be an eternity. but they can never do it by themselves.
It can be removed to be repaired re blessed. Upgrade etc
Let’s go
Astartes don't sleep, for they don't need it.
I hear the book soul hunter about a group of nightlord Marines. And there are times in the training room where they don't wear their armor. And that are heretic Astartes.
Their brains are modified so that they can sleep half their brain at a time - meaning that they don't have to be unconscious to "sleep"
They take off the Armor between warzones because believe it or not even the Astartes need to relax and to sleep..... as for putting it on and off the under suit they can put on and off themselves but the armor itself needs to be placed on them.
3:56 That really depends on the day.
As a hardcore admech fan, this trailer does a lot for me also.
Most of the answers have already been put up in your comment section, but theres one i didn't see. "why is the armor already scuffed up?"
Each piece of tech in the Imperium varies in age, but alot of it is hundreds, sometimes even thousands of years old. the marine in the vid has two service studs in his forehead, meaning he has been an active marine for 200+ years.
I thought silver studs were 50 years and gold were 100 each.
Goblin mode
the Marines dont need to sleep as often as men do, they can go an entire week without sleep and even then they can sleep in stages
"I am doom"
*Doomslayer enters
They can remove armor but lets said some may put it on 100 years without take it off
they take the suit off when not in active battle.
Same ritual for me when I hit puberty
A smol tip. Even with timestamps in the video and stuff. Intro over 1 minute it stretching it. 30seconds still more than most people want. 10-20 seconds optimal. Your is 2minutes+
I have a question for you and it is did you like the sa80 rifle when you were in the royal marines? I am asking this because many people say its garbage
Helsreach! *stomp stomp* Helsreach! *stomp stomp* Helsreach! *stomp stomp*
Pretty sure they can only take their helmet off
Nah they can take the armour off but they will keep it on for a whole campaign and take it off when they're in their monestarys etc
Them I don't know how else to say it really
the armouring of a space marine video is literally just GW saying "look at what we can now do, animation wise, with our 'in house' team of animators", and also cause why not make a video about a space marine putting his armour on
I RECOMMEND WATCHING ((WESHAMMER)) video about Every Faction on 40k Rank
space marines wear power armour when ever they feel like it... they even wear it for months or years, it has a waste disposal system but it needs to be manualy cleaned every now and then.
You should really play the game Warhammer Space Marine. It’s bloody awesome
you really need to watch to watch Vraks Chapter 1
And the marines not allways wear the armour
at 7:29 he invented a new language
Hi!
Can you react to
“What if USA joined the Axis instead of the Allies”?
How do space marines pee or poop when its really really needed?
You should check out the warframe lore it's really good the only problem with it is that warframe has the opposite of warhammer where there's so much they could do with the story stuff and just don't but what is there is awesome.
