Wow, I'd forgotten Doug made this video. I watched this when it was new back at TGWTG. Siskel and Ebert were perfect foils to one another. They defined film critique for our generation, whether you watched them or not. It's always amazing to watch Roger Ebert's general love of all movies contrast against Gene Siskel's classic style of ostentatious and pedantic criticism. It helped us learn why we still loved "popcorn flicks" and why we really enjoyed more complex movies on an even deeper level. Thanks for the memories, guys. RIP, both.
Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert will be greatly be remembered for their thumbs up and thumbs down antics and I think it's just shame that we lost the both of them in the 90's and 2010's

Loved this show, watched it weekly from the late 80s through to the early 2000s. I usually agreed with Siskel and it broke my heart when he passed: it was losing one of my first idols. When Siskel was still alive they spoke regularly about the rise of young critics and reporters on the internet which was great. I liked the revolving critics they had on after his passing. Even Scorsese did a few shows which were fun, including a year end best of recaps. Ebert was also great a replying online. The only celebrity who I wrote online who replied. And later he replied on Twitter too. Roeper was okay, but I’ve found he has gotten much better and I enjoy his short reviews he posts on UA-cam today. I also love how Ebert’s wife has maintained his legacy online.
Ngl, I got chills when their theme song started. I still remember the first episode that made me start watching them regularly. The one where they reviewed Licence to Kill, when I was 13. I loved movies, and they were my way of getting to know the movies coming out, before the internet. I also read Ebert's books.

In the early years of the internet, before youtube critics, Ebert's reviews were always my go to before anyone else. He was just always real and judged a movie by his overall emotional reaction to it. Not how good/bad it seems in theory or nitpicking details of logic.
Aaaand somewhat like Siskel before him, it was only a few years and Ebert was back in the hospital with his cancer returning, and he would lose the battle that time. I disagreed with them often, and I even started calling Mr. Ebert intellectually bankrupt after a particularly pretentious and foolish blog in which he said video games "are not, and can never be art," but I greatly respect their body of work and the combination of genuine entertainment and professionalism that was a product of such a long and storied career. R.I.P. Siskel and Ebert, two thumbs up.
Mike and Jay are awesome. Definitely my favorite critics (sorry Nostalgia Critic, I love you!) right now. Even though the medium is very different now that it has, for the most part, moved on to the internet, I can see the similarities with Siskel & Ebert. I might not agree with everything, but I'm always interested to hear what they have to say. Siskel & Ebert left one hell of a legacy, even if a lot of people involved don't even realize it.

I think Ebert would have liked the Jurassic World movies and It. I think there's a chance he would've thumbed down The Force Awakens because the killing of Han Solo seems to be at such odds with the escapist fantasy that he admired in Star Wars. Also, he thumbed down J.J. Abrams first two movies, Mission: Impossible III and Star Trek, which went against the general critical assessment of those. The female Ghostbusters has a high RT score because of the rampant political correctness in the media, plain and simple.
I grew up on the Roeper of the show around 2004-2006 around the time I was 8-10 years old, was not aware of Siskel until later. But as growing up during the Roeper era of the show, I have to say he was a great replacement on the show and complimented well with Ebert chemistry wise. Even so when they were split on movies they didn’t see eye to eye. Was really sad to see that Roger had to deal with thyroid cancer and no longer had to host the show.
loved these guys as a kid - they taught me how to look at movies in a deeper way and I got to see clips from movies I was too young to watch, and then hear adults debate them in front of me
Nice tribute. Loved them both. They were a big part of my life growing up and still are as a cinema buff. And I didn't even read critic's reviews! But I learned to rely on Ebert's recommendations...and sometime's Siskel's :-) Just doesn't seem right how they're both gone. Neither of them were that old. And with how the industry is set up today; hollywood and the media; I regret thinking there will never be a duo like them again professionally, intellectually, and with the rare brand of chemistry they had. At least we have their body of work, particularly Ebert's books and hundred's of their journalistic reviews.
Honestly, the most memorable reviews of theirs I’ve seen (just the clips, I wasn’t alive to catch the show when it was on the air) were of films they particularly adored, I.e. Fargo, Pulp Fiction, Beauty and the Beast (1991). There was something so wholesome and joyful about seeing the both of them agree on something that just reminded them why they loved film to begin with (even if you totally disagreed with them on those pictures)
You know..when the Nostalgia Critic, and the AVGN do crossovers, they almost seem like a modern Siskel and Ebert when they riff off each other (Least, that's what I got from the 'Man of Steel', and 'Batman V. Superman' reviews.)

I still miss Roger and watch Life Itself at least twice a year if not more. Both of them were fantastic critics and journalists and I think cinema owes them a great deal for making it easier for the everyday viewer to see and express their opinions more understandably.
I miss them both so much. I rarely get emotional but Ebert especially added a special quality to my life that will never be replaced. It honestly brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it.

In my area, we had these two critics who were kind of like Siskel and Ebert, Richard Von Busack and Morton Marcus who had their own show on public access. Sadly, Marcus passed away in 2009.
You lot got lucky having Richard Roper succeed Gene Siskel. He may not have been any kind of replacement but at least he was competent. We had to deal with Barry Norman being succeeded by Jonathan sodding Woss.
I promise Life Itself is one of my favorite documentaries and one of the best period. I promise it will satisfy anyone who lovde Siskel and Ebert, especially Ebert of course lol, as much as I do . IL in love with it and this video but still go for Life Itself
I think if Nostalgia Critic episodes had a higher budget and were moved to TV but still kept everyone who works on the show now without outside influences it would be just as good if not better than Siskel and Ebert
Honestly not counting salaries for Siskel/Ebert he probably has the same budget.....but he would actually suffer in a corporate environment for a few reasons 1) His skits would have to go away no time for that as they would want him to cover many movies in the time he spends on one 2) He would lose the use of clips as they would want him to do current stuff not Nostalgiac stuff 3) He would have to tone it down...Not just the language but the harshness in his reviews....I mean here he got Mara Wilson on him....but if his stuff was more mainstream you would get the likes of major players pissed off and then would risk them boycitting whatever network he was on unless he was fired
What I loved about Siskel and Ebert was that everyone seemed to side with one way more than the other. I was a Gene Siskel fan myself. BUT the other would tell you what to watch out for if they didn't like it, so you could know if there was something that you weren't into. IMHO it was the best way to get a critique of a film, more importantly so because these were the days where it could be up to a year before it came out on VHS for rental.
I have to agree with Ebert on Congo. It's actually one of my guilty pleasures because of how funny it can be. I honestly can see where he's coming from because the film has some kind of subtle or obvious joke in every scene pretty much, and I think if you look at it from that point, it can be some pretty brilliant comedy writing, maybe not a good adventure movie like they probably did intend, but I can see what he means.

You lot got lucky having Richard Roper succeed Gene Siskel. He may not have been any kind of replacement but at least he was competent. We had to deal with Barry Norman being succeeded by Jonathan sodding Woss.
It's just so sad that Jean Siskel and Roger Ebert never could get to all the movies out there at the time and it was even more sad to see them both go

I promise Life Itself is one of my favorite documentaries and one of the best period. I promise it will satisfy anyone who lovde Siskel and Ebert, especially Ebert of course lol, as much as I do . IL in love with it and this video but still go for Life Itself
I think if Nostalgia Critic episodes had a higher budget and were moved to TV but still kept everyone who works on the show now without outside influences it would be just as good if not better than Siskel and Ebert
Honestly not counting salaries for Siskel/Ebert he probably has the same budget.....but he would actually suffer in a corporate environment for a few reasons
1) His skits would have to go away no time for that as they would want him to cover many movies in the time he spends on one
2) He would lose the use of clips as they would want him to do current stuff not Nostalgiac stuff
3) He would have to tone it down...Not just the language but the harshness in his reviews....I mean here he got Mara Wilson on him....but if his stuff was more mainstream you would get the likes of major players pissed off and then would risk them boycitting whatever network he was on unless he was fired

What I loved about Siskel and Ebert was that everyone seemed to side with one way more than the other. I was a Gene Siskel fan myself. BUT the other would tell you what to watch out for if they didn't like it, so you could know if there was something that you weren't into. IMHO it was the best way to get a critique of a film, more importantly so because these were the days where it could be up to a year before it came out on VHS for rental.

I have to agree with Ebert on Congo. It's actually one of my guilty pleasures because of how funny it can be. I honestly can see where he's coming from because the film has some kind of subtle or obvious joke in every scene pretty much, and I think if you look at it from that point, it can be some pretty brilliant comedy writing, maybe not a good adventure movie like they probably did intend, but I can see what he means.
How are all the seasons of siskel and ebert not on DVD or bluray yet?!
Ebert tweeted that this was one of the funniest tributes to Siskel and himself and Doug framed it and put it on his wall!
