When you're old enough to realize that watching nostalgia critic is nostalgic of watching nostalgia critic. It's nostalgia-ception
Yeah, his videos the last few years have been...poopy.
They don't make them like in the old days. I miss it just him and a camera.
I wonder if Critic was clever enough to change format in order to create this nostalgia we feel today.
Same here.
Abe Wallard I hate people like you.
"What is it?" "Big Mac." That's probably one of my most hated lines of the movie. It couldn't just be a hamburger oh no, It had to be a product tie in.
this whole movie is unbelievably horribly written
Yeah but something about that line makes me hate it more.
That and how does he know how to make a big mac?

Ah, the wonderful medieval times in which everyone speaks modern english ! With, of course, an american accent.

Calvin played baseball about as well as I played softball. Sadly, I didn't get transported into a medieval world with Daniel Craig.
Kate TerBerg And Kate Winslet.
What's funny is it's the second movie he played a baseball player.
I honestly feel like i am a klutz. But even i am not as bad as this kid. But then again, i seem to not be good at anything half the time. But i am better than calvin.
This is the worst season of Game of Thrones ever
don't you mean the best?
At least Daniel Crag lives at the end
@@timafterdark3759 Well of course, he's the only one along with Kate Winslet who will have a career after this movie.

I actually spit out water when i saw future Oscar winner Kate Winslet and future James Bond Daniel Craig in this movie.
Thank goodness they went on to be in better movies
Oh BTW, the movie has a sequel called A Kid in Aladdin’s Palace with the same actor who played Calvin reprising his role
Oh God I just googled it I kind of remember liking this movie a little bit as a kid I had no idea it was a sequel
Whattt?! I want him to review it now so i can see it 😂

@@mitchfletcher2386 I think it was still about history when this movie was made.
@@mitchfletcher2386 you mean "used-to-be-about-history" Channel?

Yeah, for some reason I burst into laughter.
That's exactly what my Dad said when we saw the movie way back when.
I still think it's a good joke :)
I wonder if Doug knew about the running gag in Calvin and Hobbes of Calvin thinking the baseball has teeth and is attacking him. If so, that comparison is more relevant than I originally thought!
I remember reading Calvin and Hobbes back in my first 2 years in middle school.
this is almost 10 years overdue but when they say "take him to Camelot" Camelot isn't the town its the name of the castle. In medieval times castles and the villages built under or around them were named separately. Sometimes they didn't have a nearby village and were entirely independent. The castle of Camelot is theorized to be based on Cadbury Castle which was also formerly known as Camalet. The nearest village to Camalet was Yeovill but it was miles away so the castle stood on it's own.
When I was a kid I read Arthurian stories and for some reason back then I thought Camelot was a fictional version of part of England like a county or a fiefdom, something to that degree. I think they described Camelot as a portion of England when they stated that in England's time of need Arthur would return and rule the nation, leading it into an era of unparalleled glory once more. I don't recall if they specified the difference between Camelot and England as a whole or not. Sorry, my memory is abysmal.
Ever since I played AC Valhalla, I’ve been under the impression that Camelot is based on the Ancient Roman city Camulodunum, which is in Essex or Cent I think.

How has Calvin not been burned as a witch yet?
At this point you have Merlin so Magic would have been acceptable....it was only the church who pushed the burning for heresy thing
@@jfdrac Yeah, but aren't all monarchies supposed to be uber-religious? At least before constitutional monarchies became a thing?
@@DoctorWhoKage Burning wasn't as popular as you might think in the Medival times
@@DoctorWhoKage That really depends on what you mean by "all monarchies." Monarchies have been around for a while and a lot of them actually accepted magic. It was probably only into AD, specifically when Christianity started intermixing within monarchies, that it bled into how certain monarchies chose to conduct themselves. By the time that King Arthur is estimated to have existed/take place, magic would have actually been quite accepted.
As for witch-burnings, Lorax hits it on the head. It is a common misconception that burnings were a common way to kill witches. This isn't true at all. They were incredibly rare. People accused of witchcraft were killed in numerous ways. From what I can recall the more common method was usually hanging.
So, it is perfectly sensible that Calvin has not been killed for "witchcraft." The things he's doing are just stupid and sometimes lacking in logic.
I mean king Arthur is in the movie and he was very strongly associated with Merlin who was a wizard so Calvin would be fine

Samuel Johnson Wait....WHAT?!?! How did this deserve a sequel?
Samuel Johnson WHY ALADDIN
Samuel Johnson Please tell me you're kidding. If not, then that's another movie I have to look into.
Eddie Olshefski I kid you not. There was indeed a sequel...and it was worse (at least I think so). I still have the vhs and remember it as a cheap knockoff live-action sequel to Aladdin. Look it up.
@@eddieolshefski6467 Oh, I watched it as a kid. There's one part where Calvin's traveling caravan gets buried in a sandstorm up to their necks but he and the girl with him saved them all since Calvin was off hallucinating about a Burger King in the middle of a desert. I really don't remember most of the movie, just a few bits.
20:50 "oqned by Disney" phew I thought it was owned by Disney for a second there
...Far...worse.
Disney even put zero effort into claiming legal ownership of this film, this coming form the same company that sends cease and desist letters to day care centers for using copyrighted characters in their murals. When the blacksmith said "by the circle builders themselves" he was referring to the builders of the many ancient (even back then) circular structures around Britain. The most famous of which being Stonehenge.
azamonra That must be a coincidence, theirs no way the writers of this movie have even once heard of Stonehenge.
+azamonra I thought the movie was so stupid that that's what they called people who made wheels.
Jenifer Joseph lol that would be pretty stupid especially since blacksmiths ARE the ones that made wheel back then. So the blacksmith would have been saying "by the blacksmiths themselves" :P
Fun fact: Stonehenge isn't a typical henge, having a ditch *outside* the earthwork bank, rather than *inside* it, as is normal....

Hot British Sex. Hot Medieval Lesbianism. But aren't they sisters? I believe you have this confused for Game of Thrones.
If I may say something that may come dangerously close to defending this film, from what I understand, it's supposed to be a very loose adaptation of Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court". In that story, a time-traveler introduces nineteenth century technology and ingenuity to Early Medieval England. It doesn't go very well. Here, that becomes having a blacksmith make roller blades and a mountain bike and turning a CD player into a laser beam weapon.
Also, the "great circle builders" is supposed to be a reference to the builders of Stonehenge. Interestingly enough, Stonehenge figures in Arthurian Mythology.

I think it's pretty obvious that the king and his daughter time traveled to see Calvin. Just going based off of the knowing look King Arthur gives as he's sitting in the stands, and the way that girl smiles at Calvin. They're obviously the same characters.

You could say Lord Velasco tells... True Lies.
Badum-tss.
I could be incorrect but I read on a thread at one point that the actual reason there's no utensils at medieval times restaurants is actually because the flashing cutlery could attract/distract the birds in the falconer part of the performance. Better to just let guests eat messily than have to worry about the bird going for someone's face :P
i love this type of movie where a character goes to a different time to become better and then comes back with more confidence. it's funny, cliché and im here for it.
I like how they never address that taking someone from a future time to the past would result in bringing back any pathogens they happen to be carrying and start a new plague that would then alter all of history.
That's how you explain the bible. No, wait, that's 'miracles'. No, wait, same difference.
Juxtavarious There's more danger to HIM in the past than the other way around. In the past without vaccines, medicines and eating food that's not been properly cooked or cared for to take care of food-borne illness people were more resilient to illness. Yes, there were still very nasty bugs and such, like the Plague, that'd wipe out populations but those were severe because they were the exception and not the rule. There's little he could bring back to them they wouldn't have a natural immunity for. Your immune system builds itself up from exposure and people back then were exposed to a LOT.
The kid, however, grew up in a medically "clean" time. He has vaccines in him, he's been eating food that's been raised in environments to limit bacterial growth. That food has been kept in refrigeration to limit bacterial growth. Most of that food was then cooked to remove any bacteria. He's not had the same exposure to illness as the ancient counterparts so he's got a weaker comparative immune system.
His entire life all he's drank is water that's been through a complicated process of purification with fluoride and other chemicals in it to make it safer to drink.
People back then didn't drink pure, crystal-clear, water. The water they drank, when they drank it, was dirty. Remember the scene in "Back to the Future III" when Marty is in his great-grandfather's house and they serve him a glass of water and it looks like weak chocolate milk? That's because that water was recovered from a well and is filled with dirt. It's basically diluted mud.
So our kid is in a time where water, the most basic and essential thing to human life, is risky for him to intake.
There are diseases and stuff all around him that he's never been exposed to either practically or through vaccination. Stuff King Arthur and everyone else has been around their whole lives so they're immune to them, there bodies have learned to cope. He'd arrive there and pretty much instantly get a terribly bad cold or flu, worse than anything he or most of the people from his time has ever had and he'd die in a week after the local form of "medicine" drilled a hole in his skull so he could bleed-out the excess hot blood, under the assumption this would cure him of his ailment.
Yeah but...what if he had the flu? I mean he carried a flu from his time?
That's what happens when your entire plot basically fucks over history.
Brian Straight that's how Europeans resisted smallpox, and why the Native Americans got fucking rekt by it
tbh i woud be scared by medieval rats too, fn plagues and lord knows what
I wanted so bad, that someone would annouce this at the tournament:"And the next contendor, Ser Gregor of House Clegane." That would have been an amazing last act for this movie.
Relatively small gripe for a film with so much wrong with it, but holy shit the costumes were off! firstly the armour was all either completely wrong, or completely out of time period, pick a year to depict and stick to it don't smash armour together from different era's thinking it will look right, it just looks stupid!
Max Ayson Techinically the armor the kid wore in the training scene was Italian, meant to block arrows, not swords so.... What time period is this set in ?
It was not Italian it was a mish mash of plate concepts poorly slapped together. "meant to block arrows not swords" bruh consider how dumb that statement is, armour tried to stop as much damage as possible while retaining mobility constantly catching up to weapon advances, but some things would overcome it, if a breastplate could stop a warbow (which evidence suggests a high class quality breastplate could stop a warbow, but lower class troops and horses we're still vulnerable that's why medieval English and Burgundian armies that employed them in large numbers were so succesful), then it could stop ANY sword strike. Remember the only reliable way to stop a man in full plate was heavy weapons such as pole-axes, warhammers and maces because they had the force to either dent the plates meaning the fighting man couldn't move, or the concussive force would bruise, break blood vessels or knock out the opponent. You couldn't cut through plate, a sword was only use against the underarms and groin (and maybe face depending on the helmet and whether it had a visor and whether it was up or not) which we're only in maille and padding, even then a sword would struggle to penetrate without a LOT of force, normally meaning the combatant would have to be knocked down first.
And technically Arthur's time is just post-roman, around 5th century AD, so the best armour they'd have available was maille, but as it is they've fantasized it, but they've picked elements from all over the medieval period, from late dark ages helmets on the guards to early renaissance suits on some of the knights.
Circle Builders. Probably a reference to Druids and their standing stone rings.

I really enjoyed the original Mark Twain story "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" when I read it as a kid. It's impressive how many times this has been adapted to the screen, though obviously not always well. When I was a kid, I saw the 1989 TV movie adaption starring Keshia Knight Pulliam (Rudy from the Cosby Show) as well as the 1979 Disney movie "A Spaceman in King Arthur's Court." Oddly, that earlier Disney movie featured the same actor playing Merlin as "A Kid in King Arthur's Court."

The only thing I can say is about the whole princess the main characters trying to making to his girlfriend. That joke did not age well
To be fair, the girls were princesses in a dangerous era. Training them to fight may have simply been a matter of nessecity.
Tabula Rasa If I recall correctly women did train to fight during this time just not as much as men. Vikings for instance these days are considered to be all men but we found evidence that female Vikings existed and even led armies. During Cleopatra's time Julius Caesar's sister led an army at age 11,beat his ass,and forced him to swim home naked. So yeah women could be trained in combat royal blood or not.
Pretty sure princesses were nothing more than bargaining chips for political marriages during the medieval times. Their fate was to look pretty on the mantlepiece and pump out the babies, nobody expected them to go Jeanne d'Arc -ing on the battlefield.
Well, in some countries women were taught to fight, use weapons and ride a horse to protect their home, they werent equal to men but they were more respected. :)
