Scotty Kilmer Hey Scotty, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. About Kia cars, my dealership near my place has a huge banner that advertises 10 years warranty on those cars and a lot of people buy them because of that. What is covered under such warranty? Thanks
i do not get why people say it is that reliable it breaks down as the same as other cars if you do not take car of it same thing with all cars no care no bear
I just got one 2011 sorento v6 it has p200a but no other code just bought it 2 days ago the kms are 237 kms but I’m only having it for 1-2 year if I decide to have it for my wife and kids always need to go different places
not the one I bought. got it from a neighbor and I have worked on it more than I have driven it. 2011 with 225000 miles, and it seems to break down every other week @@stockey
Why do I feel like every time I find a good deal on a car and I'm thinking about buying it, I search up the name on youtube and see this guy criticizing the car or the brand.
It's what he does. You can pick any make and model and trash it and find good reasons to do so, but all in all, like I said, buying any vehicle is a crap shoot. You get a good one or you get a bad one. It's all relative. Take care of it and maintain it on a regular basis and any car should give you good service. Most people don't even change the oil so what can you expect.
What he says is wrong. Whatcar? and honest john will tell you the near truth, because they get their information from a wide range of owners, not just one random car
Had my first Kia, a ceed, for 8 years without it ever breaking down, or having any faults. In fact, it was so reliable that I gave it to my wife rather than trade it in. She still has it, and now it's 11 years old and having a new wiper switch fitted next week. I have a Kia sportage that is nearly 7 years old, and guess what? It's never broken down, never failed in any way, a totally dependable and reliable vehicle.
@@andreai_s_a87 Stay on top of general maintenance and get oil changed regularly. And pay attention to your car..If it sounds or seems to be acting funny have someone check it out.
I’ve had 2 and never had any major issues. We just sold our 2007 Kia Sportage with 170,000 miles on it. We had it for 6 years and only needed general maintenance.
I had a 2002 Hyundai Santa fe with 290k miles. Sold it in 2018 for $3000 and I still see it around town. I see tons of old Hyundai’s and kias on the road. Take care of the car and it will take care of you.
Kia quality has improved greatly since 2008. Kia is not where Honda and Toyota were in the 90's. They're producing decent quality cars without having to pay the Honda/Toyota premium price.
@John Doe I can attest that it’s possible! My 2011 Kia Soul has 245,000 miles and has never had any major issues. It’s been my family’s most reliable car and takes me on my long commute to work everyday 💪
I'm a motor mechanic who became a driving instructor and have had 3 Kia's. 2 Rio's and a Cerato. The Rio's did 350,000+ each and only needed ignition coils. No timing chain issues, no oil leaks, nothing. The Cerato is now 150,000 and still drives like new.
@@jecrpalier Really, my 2015 Malibu caught fire while parked! GM refuses to answer my inquiries, I hired a lawyer who gave me my money back because he had never seen anything like that! It's bizarre but from what I read GM used cheap Chinese electrical components, but the reason I bought the Malibu was the high reliability ratings from Consumer reports! Weird world.
@Ale Jr. I don't think they are junk became they must have faith in their car's with a 7 year warranty just like Mitsubishi with their 8 year warranty. You don't see the German cars with that kind of warranty became they can't back it up when things go wrong.
So an 11 year old car has a bad compressor.... Mileage is irrelevant unfortunately. I've worked for major dealerships for 10+ years. Good parts go bad all the time. I wouldn't have a job if they didn't. That goes for Kia, Honda, Toyota, etc.. I like Scotty but this is a little absurd.
MadBurrito x it’s not totally irrelevant but you have to factor in many different things when comparing the two. In texas people are going to be using their ac a ton, putting a lot of wear on the ac components. Maybe the owner of the sportage used their ac basically all the time and that may not be the case on the celica. I’m sure there are plenty of celica owners who have had to replace their ac compressor at or below 100k miles and plenty of sportage owners who haven’t had to replace it at all
Hyundai and Kia has stepped their game up the past few years, there was a dark period of time they was going through, like any other car manufacture. They have really good warranty's and plus the accents are just as reliable as corollas, they even offer more creature comforts then a corolla at a way lower price point.
I agree daughter just sold her 8 year old Picanto, 2016, never had any issues, held it's value too. Comes with 7 year warranty like Hyundai, so they gotta be fairly confident in the quality.
2011 Kia Sportage owner myself other than some cosmetic issues it's been pretty reliable. It's also the first car I've owned that I've been able to do most of the maintenance myself. Lot of newer cars or even ones back in the late 90s felt like you needed a shop just to change the spark plugs. Shade tree and a socket set is all it took for most of my repair work.
The reason for the increased price of the KIA Sportage, relative to the Rav 4, must be because they fixed that floppy visor, progress is being made here.
Kia and Hyundai made progress after 2010. I prefer hyundai/kia. Toyota's are not much reliable anymore and Hyundai/kia quality increased rapidly every year.
Wife has a Kia Soul. Going on 9 years old now an it still runs as well as day 1. KiA is killer. A few friends of mine have KIAs and they love them too.
Scotty this is a pretty bad example. Why not show something a little more bit more modern like 2014-2019. I drive a kia optima 2014 with 88,000 miles and it's still working just fine I only head to the kia dealer to change the oil. 🤷♂️
I drive 2012 KIA Optima with 130,200 miles and have never spent a dime on it but for regular maintenance. My wife has a 2010 Kia Forte with 98,000 miles and it's trouble free
But if you take the broader perspective - to me it looks like he's giving a specific make example here to illustrate a generalisation of brands - he sees a lot of cars come through his shop so he's general conclusion @ 5:36 is still a good way to look at Korea vs Japan made cars based on his experience.
Still driving my 2004 kia spectra. Owned two other Kias over the years. They are super easy and affordable to work on. I really appreciate that, as I'm sure anyone watching this vid would too. Kia's have a logical layout with plenty of room to get at things.
Hyundais and Kias have gotten a lot better over the years. Just be careful buying a used one. In my personal experience as a mechanic, Korean cars seem to be abused and neglected by their owners more than others. It amazed me how reluctant Kia owners were to even change their oil at all. Must be due to the lower base price attracting people with less money
This is very true in my city as many of low income people buy these brands, majority of them are middle ages. They don't seem to care if this is one of the cheapest brands or not, just don't want to pay nickle more and many of them are banged up. So it all falls down to basically one thing: It all depends on how people take care their vehicles.
I work at a Kia dealership as a salesman. They are priced well and most importantly have the best warranty out there! 10 years, 100k miles! You can't beat it!
Kia and Hyundai are the best budget cars, better than American cars and any French or Italian cars, modern ones are better relability wise than the Germans in most cases although the build quaility is not as good, Honda and Toyota are better but you pay extra, all in all you get what you pay for.
Kia's are great, had them for 20 years, very reliable, you're full of it, air-conditioning still running great after 11 years, 250k miles on my Borrego, solid performer.
While I will agree that Kia's are great, I have a 2019 Soul that has been maintained extremely well and the compressor just went out. Granted it has 170k miles on it and I drive it a lot. I think they have some accessories that wear out way too son but overall I still like their vehicles. My wife has been with Kia since 2005 and I just bought her a 2023 Sportage.
I am on my 3rd Kia. Never had a single problem. Currently driving the new 2021 Kia K5 Gt line AWD. I love this car. Kia isn't the car brand it was in the 90's.
I have a 2007 Kia 220000 Kay's and the only problem was a stuffed brake light switch which caused the cruise control to NOT disengage. Nearly seat damage
I drive and 07 sorento and we've had it since it was new. Sure it has had some maintenance done to it, but it gets me from point A to point B and it still runs like a dream. The interior has held up fine and nothing inside is worn or loose
I've known so many people with late model Kias. All neglected with high mileage, but every single one of them has been incredibly reliable. If I was in the market for a new car I wouldn't hesitate to take a look at Kia/Hyundai.
@@gl9500 Kia/Hyundai are not even close to the most overpriced cars. Their dealerships suck but they're no more overpriced than any of the other new cars. I don't buy new though.
Yup second gen Honda CRV a/c units were also a guaranteed failure self destructing and filling the whole system full of shrapnel requiring a complete replacement of everything.
It's funny you said that because Scotty actually posted a video talking about the crap AC compressor in a Honda, I just can't remember what model it was but I'm sure Honda uses the similar part across the lineup
Got a 2007 KIA Sedona and it has been the best van ever. 177K all original parts except brake pads. Change the old every 5k and transmission fluid 90K just changed power steering fluid. Just did a trip to Florida and back with no issues. the air conditioner has never been touched and was so cold the wife and kids complained. Bought 2 Rio's for 2 kids and 3 forte's for kids and wife and we love them. Had a dodge caravan and tranny went at 45k, electrical issues traded in for 2007 KIA Sedona and couldn't be happier. I still have the original fan belt on it and still look good and still the same spark plugs. 23-24 miles to the gallon too.
Best car out there that doesn't break the bank. I still believe Toyota and Honda are better but its reflected in the prices. Nothing wrong with Kia or indeed Hyundai. In the UK Hyundai are becoming an increasingly popular choice for Taxis they like the I40 estates.
Except you have to do a lot of the relair through Kia. I decided against another Kia after I had such a hard time trying to find someone else to do certain things because only Kia has the part.
I would never buy a Kia, you’ve got that name, such a bad reputation, in fact I don’t think I’d buy a Korean car ever, at least not the old ones, terrible quality
How do you know if they are new? Lmao Real quality will stand the test of time. It is not just shiny gadgets that look and work nicely the first 3 years.
I bought a Kia Seltos 2021 SX-TURBO recently. I never wanted to be the Korean in a Korean make, but I was sold with two test drives. They definitely updated their game. I feel that it'll last past at least 180k with every 6k. service. This guy just misses his last dog and probably has a confederate flag in the guest bathroom.....but he's got enthusiasm and he's funny.
@@madman5705 Timing belt breaking is YOUR negligence frankly, if it has a belt it needs to be replaced once in a while, probably the owners manual says so before 100k or there abouts.
@@madman5705 Thanks for posting ! That is very good mileage, I am sure that if the belt was changed in time, you could have done even MORE MILEAGE ! Hence, Kia vehicles are good vehicles. Thank God there isn't ONLY TOYOTA VEHICLES to choose from ! ! Cheers !
Scotty really has something against Korean cars. One bad air compressor in a 2008 and he’s running online to make a video calling them crap. I’ve had nothing but good experiences with Hyundai (essentially the same company)
Bought 09 sonata new, now 130k, zero problems, love the car and will drive till dead. They have had engine recalls on newer ones, but Toyota Camrys of same year had oil consumption problems which scotty doesn't talk much about. Did buy a Toyota highlander based on scotty's opinion, haven't had long enough to base an opinion on that vehicle, so not a scotty hater either. Do enjoy his channel.
Our 2011 Toyota RAV4 4cyl Water pump failed with 50k miles, and 2012 Honda Piliot Condensor began to leak refrigerant at the side rear @ 60k miles. We bought those vehicles New! So it’s even a crapshoot with Honda and Toyota!
EVERYTHING IS A CRAP SHOOT, even when you get CANCER and die a horrible death, alone, terrified and in horrific pain. As did my two brothers and my Mom, the last 6 years.
I love my 2006 sportage. I bought at 106,000 miles for $2,700. The air conditioning is amazing. I have put 100,000 miles . It is spacious and very comfortable .
Exactly. I have no idea why people still listen to his bull crap. I had a precious Honda CRV that I purchased new and it blew 2 AC compressors before 30k miles. Once it hit 40, it blew another one that was going to cost me $2000 to fix. I dumped it on a Kia. I have since had 2 more Kia's and I personally love them. My buddy has a Toyota Tacoma that had 58k miles on it when some air pump failed and costed him $2700 to repair. He never mentions stuff like that in his videos.
@@1hondaluver My friend's Corolla also suffered from the massive Toyota engine oil sludge problem. And, don't most Toyotas have CVTs which he criticizes in this video?
All KIA’s are “crap” because you say they are. This is an old KIA and the company has come a long way since. The compressor in my Honda Pilot went out at 60K miles. Does that make all Honda’s crap? You need to update your knowledge around KIA as a brand. KIA reliability, customer satisfaction, and interior quality is one of the highest ranking according to consumer reports right behind your beloved Toyota. You don’t like KIA, Hyundai, Mazda, Subaru, all American brands, and can’t think of any other German or other brands you like other than Toyota. We get it, only buy Toyota’s, period. Right? I agree Toyota is a great brand. However, I owned a 2019 model for seven months and the eight speed gear shifting was so awful, I sold the car and bought the KIA Stinger GT2. The KIA is smooth shifting and the car cabin is quieter than the Toyota. The same goes for when we compared the quality of the Highlander vs the Sorento. Interior materials for the Highlander were mostly hard plastics. Again, the gear shifting was awful.
Lol well he’s a mechanic for 50+ years and he’s just trying to emphasize that Toyota is on a level of it’s own in terms of reliability. Period. You can’t argue with that. Plus, consumer reports? Do you mean JD power award that placed chevy malibu as the most reliable vehicle in 2019? Hahahahaha
Mohammad Arman nah, I mean CR...go look it up. Also, I post a lot in support of his site and how he helps people, so you’re just being a keyboard warrior. No, didn’t mean JD Power, because most Chevy’s are rated highly by that org..they’re paid for their ratings. Lastly, did you read he part where I said Toyota’s do make great cars?
Daniel yep, they do. That wasn’t my point. He’s claiming all KIA’s are “crap.” Go and check out the IHHS Top Safety Picks Plus awards. IHHS is the gold standard for crash tests. KIA had more Top Safety Picks and Top Safety Pick Plus awards for cars than Toyota and Honda. Toyota’s and Honda’s have great resale values and that’s why until the last two years I’ve only owned Honda, Acura, and Toyota’s. Right now, resale value isn’t a priority for me. I’ve responded with way more detail than someone like you deserves...”that’s why KIA’s have low resale values.” 😂 Maybe you should learn how to write.
I've Had 2 brand new kias a spectra and a sorento bought them new never had any issues with them and I've kept them till well over 200, 000 miles. Mechanically no issues just regular maintenance, oil changes, tires, brakes, and belts, if you take care of your car it will take care of you, people need to realize that. Stay away from turbo vehicles. I would buy a kia definately.
Why is that impressive? Every car on planet earth should get that... I had a 1999 Ford Taurus with 419k on it. Then I sold it to a stripper and she drove it for many years... Kia builds crap cars for people who dont want to spend or can't spend much money but want all the kool stuff that comes with more expensive cars... these same people have the audacity to complain when there radio breaks, the the buttons stop working there 40 mph car starts getting 25 mpg because of the carbon build up from the pos gdi motors they use... any one who knows any thing about cars will tell you they are junk.
My only experience with kia is my grandfather's 2003 Optima EX. While he didn't drive it like a maniac, he was no slouch. I did all the work on it from the time it was new, at the specified intervals, with OEM parts. The only problem it ever had over 300k miles of road trips and daily driving was the intake boot tore behind the MAF. Easy fix. He sold it because he wanted a bolt. The person who bought it still has me do all the work like I did before and it is still running strong at 350k. Grandpa said it's the most reliable car he ever owned in all his 84 years
@savage 069 oh shut it, cars back then were nearly never driven NEARLY as often. I'd be surprised if the shitty, inefficient motor last 200k, the floor pans sure won't. Cars today last way longer than old cars, nobody seems too notice that, yeah the Kia probably won't last that long because it would 700,000+ miles on it. I own 5 Saabs all with over 200k in Massachusetts the weather Capitol.... All run great with turbos that would destroy the bird
Some of the older Kias were crap but the newer ones are actually OK especially for the money, you aren't paying Toyota, Honda or Volkswagen money so you can't expect the same quaility and reliability.
It just seems like these are only good bargains knew rather than used, I like a good used car because if you're someone who drives a lot you can put 100 K on a car in no time, I put 293K on a 2011 Camry I got in 2014 and sold it last year,, Imagine that car having issues after the first 100 K that wouldn't of been ideal for me
Every car has its issues, but kia/hyundai has improved exponentially over the years. An isolated case of engine failures is a prime example of laxed quality control in some of their plants due to outsourcing and shouldn't judge the entire car line. My girlfriend has a 2013 kia forte with 180k plus miles with no major issues at all except for purge valve replacement of $12, new rotors/brakes and it's 2.4 liter engine is incredibly peppy and slings me back with its power. Original AC that will freeze you out etc., etc., I'm very impressed with it and I drive yota's.
@@KaneKP28 - I actually still own my 2005 Kia Spectra5, and aside from your regular maintenance, I've never had any major issues with it. AND, my car looks in way better shape than most of these newer cars.
I’m on my second Kia, I wish people would stop judging Kia off their 2000-12 vehicles, Kia is a very different brand now, if people gave them more of a chance they would not be disappointed
For the record, I had a 2015 Soul, no warranty claim ever, traded it at 50k for a 2020 Soul, no issues in 2 years of ownership. Wife has 2016 Optima bought new, 1 warranty issue for a emission part, 1 set of tires and a battery, both recently at 65k miles. Daughter bought a used 2013 Optima, no issues, a battery and a set of tires and my Mom bought a 2013 Forte with 90k miles no issues since buying last year. I used to write service at Toyota and they do use timing chains for interference engines and belts for non-interference engines, a policy all automakers should have, but they have had issues w frame rust on the trucks and oil leaks on the older avalons. Nobody's perfect.
@@Handiman544 when i went to the car dealer on 2011 my family reminded me not to get kia, a dirty kia is the first suv a saw on the gate, i said will not get a suv kia, my 8k budget out of the door got me ended up with the 2005 kia suv i saw on the gate. Im still driving it with a 240k + mileage on it. 😁
all you really gotta do is take care of 'em in my experience, the maintained Kias last with marginally more problems than you'd find on a Toyota or Honda but not by much, and the neglected Kias (usually owned by people who figure it's nothing to neglect them since they're so cheap that they won't have it for long anyway) fall apart
@@tracyalbino-daggett4032 it will. That's why there are so many 10 year plus old still on the road without hazy headlights like moke 7 year old bare bomes toyotas. Not saying toyota is bad but Kia and Hyundai are better.
Scotty this is an older model. Kia + Hyundai has come together to make a MONSTER SUV Tellaride! I have owned my Genesis G1 for 6 years with absolutely no issues!!!! My friend got the Kia Sorento SX 4 years no problems. Love the car please don't base it on OLD models for either company. Reputation is much better
I think that title still belongs to the Kia Mohave (Borrego in the US), that was a true monster of an SUV then (body on frame, RWD from Korea). Too bad they quit importing it in 2009 (released at the wrong time then), while the last one made was in 2017 for other markets.
4:13 just now seeing this it may be because hers is a 6 cylinder 2008 Sportage? My mom must have gotten lucky because she has over 200,000 Mi and has never had an issue
I love ya Scotty, but you're wrong on this one. My sister's 2014 Sportage has been an immaculate car. She drives 80 miles round trip to work every day. Hasn't missed a beat in 5 years. BUT she takes good care of it with frequent oil changes and keeps everything in good working condition. So far, no major problems.
i’m 18 and i bought a kia sportage 2001 for $500 last year, and i’ve replaced 2 radiators, alternator, battery, a busted coolant pipe, water pump , and timing belt all my self,it has 155,000 miles and i’ve put 15,000 miles in a year and i can’t drive on the hwy bc then my transmission starts slipping and my rpms shoot to 5k going 20 when i’m back at city driving
Yep. I'm happy with my 2006 Kia Sportage LX 2.0L FWD Manual transmission. I obtained it 10/2011 with 55,774 miles, and as of 05/07/2021 it has 199,000 miles. My air conditioning did stop working in 08/2018... this was due to debris on the highway that damaged the air conditioning condenser, and caused all the refrigerant to leak out. I repaired the pinhole leak on the condenser, filled it up again, and have had no issues since then.
@@jayfromjax Yeah if you want to spend but loads of money for the constant repairs involved. Especially if you got to pay a mechanic to do your repairs. My friend had one and he had it maybe 2 years until it just kept having more and more issues. Each time I rode with him there was an entirely new problem. Never had any issues with my old camry which I sold with 257k miles, I have now moved on to a toyota matrix with 148k miles. Thats how much I trust toyota reliability, and I still paid $4,000 but it was still worth it. Will never own a Kia anyways. Same with Hyaundai garbage.
I own a 2013 Hyundai Elantra gls with over 110k miles everything works great no a/c issues my heated seats work everything works great no issues I will always buy Hyundai love the brand & love the 100k mile warranty
Had 2006 Kia Sedona. Had to tore out the timing chain cover due to failing timing chain tensioner at 70k miles. Worked on all kinds of make, models of cars but never had timing chain problems at 70k.
250k miles on my v6 2008 Sportage and only the AC compressor broke this week. one of the best cars i have bought yet, not to mention ive taken it to the desert multiple times.
In all honesty you can find complaints about every car.. Even the Rv4 he is talking about so fondly. Its just tough to pick a car. Kia currently does have one of the better warranties out which can give some peace of mind.
I'm agree he's talking about a 2008. We don't know how the previous owner drove it or cared for it. On my 4th kia. Love them. No issues. 2012 sorento with 52k and none of those issues he's talking about

I'm not a mechanic, but that Kia is 11 years old. Not surprising that the A/C compressor could go out on any 11 year old car. It's 50k miles could be just local miles with not many long freeway trips since it's a family vehicle. Same for the struts - lots of potholes after 11 years. Yes Scotty, you have a couple of bargain toyotas in your driveway. But that doesn't mean every other brand is crap! Some "crap" vehicles can go for hundreds of thousands of miles, while some people may buy duds of the same model.
Yeaahhhh..Hyundai had engine shavings problems...I'm not sure any other company experienced this ever before actually to my knowledge, really screwed my mom over, I'll never buy anything from many companys ever used or new for many reliability reasons, they need to build easily serviceable (DIY) and stop worrying about dealerships because let's call it like it is people are only getting more information about things they don't care about and for alot of people, like my mother for example that's cars she likes some cars and suvs better than some but could care less and nowadays I'm looking very deeply into every single material used in a vehicle from interior to engine bay to wheel well to random trim and clips and rubber and after we got her a Honda civic she agreed she won't be buying another car or going to any shop without the advice of a mechanic, car guy, engineer all of which I am, mechanics are ocassionally dirty and some car companys are pure trash I have no idea how they haven't been sued completely out of business trust what scotty says...and the fact that Honda and Toyota has a recent solid 30 years of reliable and easy to work on vehicles to pick from, no matter how much money you make...most part replacements are because of cheap build quality and bad materials on newer vehicles, with the type of engineering that surely was begging for parts to be unservicable , chevy and mercedes and bmw and Chrysler are built horrendously and to wish them on my worst enemy would be bold
I think the only kia that really gave trouble was the early kia picanto became they had issues with the crankshaft pulley bolt which came loose over time and affected the timing and caused miss firing and poor running. It was a factory issue where the crankshaft pulley bolt was not torqued down sufficiently enough. But I think they addressed that problem with the new models so I would say they have came along way since then .
Kias are way better made today than they were a decade ago. Korean cars are build cheaper but it comes with the cheaper price. Have a 2018 Hyundai Sonata and love it to death. Know someone who had a Hyundai Veracruz with a 280k and everything was original.
Dunno if I'd go quite that far. But their cars are indeed better than back in 2008. Kia is still very budget oriented. The Kia stinger is interesting to me and I think they are trying to move their brand into the center of the pack instead of being considered the 'rock bottom budget' option.
"Here's why Kia's are crap" then shows us a 2008 Kia... You have to be the troll god on UA-cam. Keep listening to this guy and your preference will be to ride the bus!
For all we know the owner might idle the car all the time with the AC on blast without actually driving any significant distance, hence the low mileage.
It's 125 degrees in Baghdad for almost 3 months a year, Hyundai and Kia can take the heat, never over heat the engine and the AC blows cold air and if you drive wise, little maintenance is required. So from my experience, what you say is not worth listening to...
@@slowgoat6089 There is for sure something going on there lol. I have a 2015 KIA Soul! At 66,000 miles and have 0 issues. I have only had to pay for scheduled maintenance like I would expect with any car. Maybe she has a leak somewhere 🤷🏼♂️
I've had mine since 2008, and the only replacement I do is just the brakes and recently the strut, and thank God it's still running at 264K. It's a great vehicle for me. Mine already cross cross North America without any problem on the road. The air condition gave up just last year. I t runs so very fine on the highway that's why I like it. I guess it all depends on the way you use and maintain your vehicle. This just to prove you wrong i can show mine and it's still running good and amazing on fuel economy after 14 years.
How can you tell they've improved if these new kias are new? Any car made within the last few years should be fine. Especially when people don't drive them much. I'd wait to see how well these new kias hold up under high mileage driving (20k miles plus a year) after ten years
They have improved, but after the 2003 model I had (cheered for being "high quality" when it first came out), I'll never own one again. They can only sing the "we're better than before!" song so many times.
Scotty is not living in the Eastern Europe. Here we just change one engine with other for around 1300 bucks and do all possible repears up to 5000$ even if car was heavily crashed. Ofc, in USA where you pay mechanic atleast 20 bucks an hour, you just buy another car. The main KIA advantage is avaiabilty of spare parts, cheap service, good sales prices.
A local car hire company local to me here in the UK ran several Kias as they were so reliable. I hired a C'eed and a Rio from them and they were nice cars.
Kias now are very reliable, I know couple people with Kias that haven't had real issues and are over 200k miles. Had a 2014 Ford Mustan GT with only 38k miles on it, recently traded it in for a 2020 Kia Forte GT so far I'm in love with the quality.
@@fadhly5192 yeah, some cars do have problems. The only Kia's I know that are good so far are the Kia Optima's with the 2.5 engine, and Kia Forte GT'a with the 1.6T from personal experience.
Corvetteman2013 everything is more reliable than Gm . Oh yeah.....I own a vette. It’s reliable but everything else costs a fortune to keep alive after warranty runs out
Dear Scotty, I'll say it once again, Kia/Hyundai used to make really bad cheap cars that used to break all the time and no one can't argue with that; however in 2011 and up Kia/hyundai started to move from quantity to quality and it really started to show big time. I own a 2012 Hyundai Elantra with 133k and the car is running like a champ. My point is, dont get stuck on old saying... companies have to change to stay running. For example just look at Nissan? They used to make really reliable cars, now they suck. If I was going to believe the "OLD SAYING" that Nissan is good today, I would have bought it and end up with a junky car. Manufacturers changes all the time, and right now Toyota is the most reliable car brand, but do you think this is going to last forever?
These kimchis may now be OK. As an early adopter of Korean cars, I must say that Scotty is spot on on his comments. I felt really cheated when the door handles break, alternator dies, auto tranny tanked leaving me stranded. Never again will I buy a kimchi
Nissan only changed their business model because they were bought out by a French company Renault. Kia was garbage at first because the Koreans were still learning how to build cars. Toyota’s business model has always been about quality, so yes, in the foreseeable future that will not change. GMs business model has always been about short term profits which is why they will always suck.
Two years ago I bought a little Kia Spectra with a 5 speed trans for $1200 for my "go to work" vehicle. It now has 183k miles, it's been fairly reliable, only left me stranded once. Yes, they are definitely cheap made vehicles and they don't hold their value, meaning you can find them at a good price. Would I ever buy a new Kia, hell no! I'm too cheap!
I was in a KIA Sedona minivan last year to pick someone up at an airport in Toronto. Okay van, but it was a rental. I drive a Ford Windstar, but I have to replace a new battery from Costco Kirkland brand and replace the back axle since both wheels were showing negative camber.
On my second kia right now. both are 2006 and over 250000 miles and no issues. Drive and serve your car right, know what your car was made for and things should go just fine.
Dealerships hate doing warranty work. They'll say can't duplicate, then rush the job with a novice tech who will break something in the process of repairing. Believe me, I've been there.
I have a 2003 Kia Optima and it’s been outstanding we’ve had it in the family since 2003 and the spark plugs were never change and it still had lots of power never had any hiccups I recently changed the plugs and the back 3 were absolutely worn down and it was still running great it was basically running off of 3 cylinders out of 6. I can’t speak for other kias but this one is freekin awesome.
Watch the entire "tony seba freightwaves" presentation on UA-cam. The first half provides important context for the mind-bending second half. The smart money generally won't buy a new car. Drive yours until the wheels fall off, and in the meantime, save some cash in the bank in case you need to buy a replacement car a pinch, so you can buy it outright.
Arc Mas Smart ones who won't be as willing to take their husband to the cleaners in a divorce when they get bored won't mind. If it saves the guy $$$ to put towards housing or paying off debt, it's a good sign for the savvy woman, some of whom might be attractive.
Don’t, the quality back then of any company was much better. KIA uses and relies on their JD Power awards, proving that they can’t make a decent vehicle so they gotta pay someone to say something good about it. It’s common sense, research the brand history, the problems with that certain model, and the resale value. They are cheaper for a reason, everything has a reason
mother in law bought a kia sorrento 2011 sx. it had 49000 when she bought it. now it has 167000. she had alternator replaced earlier this yr so thats impressive since thats the only thing broke on her

He's obviously biased, he actually thinks Toyota is the be all end all for cars, which is true some of the time, not always
It's getting old...
I'm glad someone said it. I was thinking the same thing. At this point the age matters more than the mileage
AC in his 1994 Toyota Celica still blows ice cold.
AHH AC compressors should last the life of the vehicle. I guess in a Kias case thats 50000 miles.
@Bobby Brady how is it irrelevant?
I completely agree with this statement.
I have a 2008 Sorento that drives great. Never had a problem. One of the last years of the rear wheel drive.

We've had ours for 8 years and it's been flawless.
Kia started upping their game since early 2010 and they've been constanly reliable.

Mostly the kia comes with stuff toyota doesnt even offer.

But if you take the broader perspective - to me it looks like he's giving a specific make example here to illustrate a generalisation of brands - he sees a lot of cars come through his shop so he's general conclusion @ 5:36 is still a good way to look at Korea vs Japan made cars based on his experience.
@@ElectronicsForFun yeah cuz I'm a noob when it comes to car maintenance. Soon I'll be doing it on my own. Cuz going the dealer is getting expensive.

Scotty has a video on that too. He said to stay away from the in line 4 Cyl and the V8 Rav4s. He recommends the 6 Cyl.

I love my 2006 sportage. I bought at 106,000 miles for $2,700. The air conditioning is amazing. I have put 100,000 miles . It is spacious and very comfortable .
Comparing a 2008 Kia to today's Kias is a bit unfair. The company along with Hyundai has changed for the better since then.
Had a family member that had a 2008 KIA RIO with 358,000 MILES on it when it got wrecked, Good car, no problems. AC worked fine.

Hahahahaha
Also, newer kias have a shitty resale value. Why is that?

Kia builds crap cars for people who dont want to spend or can't spend much money but want all the kool stuff that comes with more expensive cars... these same people have the audacity to complain when there radio breaks, the the buttons stop working there 40 mph car starts getting 25 mpg because of the carbon build up from the pos gdi motors they use... any one who knows any thing about cars will tell you they are junk.
time to call guinness record
Ever hit any sweet jumps?
My only experience with kia is my grandfather's 2003 Optima EX.
While he didn't drive it like a maniac, he was no slouch. I did all the work on it from the time it was new, at the specified intervals, with OEM parts.
The only problem it ever had over 300k miles of road trips and daily driving was the intake boot tore behind the MAF. Easy fix. He sold it because he wanted a bolt. The person who bought it still has me do all the work like I did before and it is still running strong at 350k.
Grandpa said it's the most reliable car he ever owned in all his 84 years
That’s so cool! My first car was a 2004 optima ex. I moved on to my 2011 sonata but I still have it in my driveway

How many miles?
@savage 069 oh shut it, cars back then were nearly never driven NEARLY as often. I'd be surprised if the shitty, inefficient motor last 200k, the floor pans sure won't. Cars today last way longer than old cars, nobody seems too notice that, yeah the Kia probably won't last that long because it would 700,000+ miles on it. I own 5 Saabs all with over 200k in Massachusetts the weather Capitol.... All run great with turbos that would destroy the bird
I have a 1.0 Opel Corsa, 17 years old with 130,000 on the clock still going strong.
Had a Kia Sportage 2011 and used it for 8.5 years, very satisfied with the performance.... and the new Kia's design language is setting a milestone

Dunno if I'd go quite that far. But their cars are indeed better than back in 2008. Kia is still very budget oriented. The Kia stinger is interesting to me and I think they are trying to move their brand into the center of the pack instead of being considered the 'rock bottom budget' option.

It’s reliable but everything else costs a fortune to keep alive after warranty runs out
Dear Scotty,
I'll say it once again, Kia/Hyundai used to make really bad cheap cars that used to break all the time and no one can't argue with that; however in 2011 and up Kia/hyundai started to move from quantity to quality and it really started to show big time.
Straight Facts!!
GMs business model has always been about short term profits which is why they will always suck.
i have kia-sorento and is better than toyota -highlander which was my previous car ?
Two years ago I bought a little Kia Spectra with a 5 speed trans for $1200 for my "go to work" vehicle. It now has 183k miles, it's been fairly reliable, only left me stranded once. Yes, they are definitely cheap made vehicles and they don't hold their value, meaning you can find them at a good price. Would I ever buy a new Kia, hell no! I'm too cheap!
Smart man 🙌
I was in a KIA Sedona minivan last year to pick someone up at an airport in Toronto. Okay van, but it was a rental. I drive a Ford Windstar, but I have to replace a new battery from Costco Kirkland brand and replace the back axle since both wheels were showing negative camber.
Hell, if the Kia Spectra ends up quitting on me tomorrow, I definitely got more than my $1200 I paid for it.
On my second kia right now. both are 2006 and over 250000 miles and no issues. Drive and serve your car right, know what your car was made for and things should go just fine.
our 05 Hyundai Tucson is holding up quite well. 270k miles still running on same engine/transmission and the AC still works. Not bad.
My sister just bought a 2006 Hyundai tuscon and the alternator die at 212 lol.
3 months from now Scotty will be saying how he was wrong about Kia.
Haha
wait till stinger goes down in price..car will be a classic.
He already admitted he was wrong about Mazda
A lot of mechanics won't even admit when they're wrong. This guy does.
@@joejones5653 That's probably because he realized they make cars under the Toyota name
There's a lot of comfort in Kia/Hyundai 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. A sun visor I can handle out of my own pocket.
They won't honor the warranty on a lot of standard issues. I know from experience.
Dealerships hate doing warranty work. They'll say can't duplicate, then rush the job with a novice tech who will break something in the process of repairing. Believe me, I've been there.
Covered to 60k miles! Why not.
TreesOnTheBeach go to a different dealer
TreesOnTheBeach that’s the dealership you went to go elsewhere
I have a 2003 Kia Optima and it’s been outstanding we’ve had it in the family since 2003 and the spark plugs were never change and it still had lots of power never had any hiccups I recently changed the plugs and the back 3 were absolutely worn down and it was still running great it was basically running off of 3 cylinders out of 6. I can’t speak for other kias but this one is freekin awesome.
I can say the same, I have a 2004 optima and it’s still running decently for 160k miles
Scotty you cant compare a 2005 Kia to a 2019 Kia. They are completely different. I see Kias even old ones everywhere.
Karo French you have a Kia don’t you?
@@oldirtydave22 a 2019 Kia
I have to completely agree.
@@oldirtydave22 I have a 2011 Forte Koup SX...and I have not experienced a single problem. I just broke 85k and it still runs and looks amazing.
How can you know a 2019 Kia is reliable if you drive it one year? Stay away from that rubbish Kia.
I have a 2006 Kia Sportage. It's only got 190,000 miles on it. Gets great mileage and runs great. I'd look at getting another one.
get the new Telluride
Watch the entire "tony seba freightwaves" presentation on UA-cam. The first half provides important context for the mind-bending second half. The smart money generally won't buy a new car. Drive yours until the wheels fall off, and in the meantime, save some cash in the bank in case you need to buy a replacement car a pinch, so you can buy it outright.
Michael Ball Attractive high quality women will not go for that unfortunately.
They are cheaper for a reason, everything has a reason
mother in law bought a kia sorrento 2011 sx. it had 49000 when she bought it. now it has 167000. she had alternator replaced earlier this yr so thats impressive since thats the only thing broke on her
I also have a 2011 Sorento with the 3.5 V6 - it runs like new and has been as reliable as the sunrise - of course i'm a stickler about changing the oil and i don't beat the crap out of it - am i the only one? - hardly - i meet people all the time that love their Kias
billgee02 I bought a 2018 Sportage and I love it. My buddy has a 2012 Optima, not a single issue. I always regret watching this dude’s videos. Waste of time. This guy reminds me of Red Green.
@@nicotoscani8270 - Nico - Scotty is referring to his opinion - I also convinced a buddy to buy a Sportage based upon my "opinion" of my Sorento - We're still friends because he still l.oves his Sportage - "nuff said"-
Layne Williams The problem with these types of videos is that people believe what Scotty says and it’s not fair to car companies like Kia. Kia makes a fine car but some Scotty follower with blinders on won’t ever consider one because of this video. Shitty.
@Layne Williams scotty bashes on everything its just a matter of time. He has to keep the videos coming is my guess to why
