  • Director Hirokazu Kore-eda visits the BFI Southbank to talk about his 2008 family drama, Still Walking.
In Still Walking a group of grown children visit their elderly parents, one summer day. The aging parents have lived in the family home for decades. Their son and daughter return for a rare family reunion, bringing their own families with them. They have gathered to commemorate the tragic death of the eldest son, who drowned in an accident fifteen years ago. Although the roomy house is as comforting and unchanging as the mother's homemade feast, everyone in the family has subtly changed. This is a typical dysfunctional family, bonded by love as well as resentments and secrets.

I'm actually really taken aback by the translator. She does such a phenomenal job replicating emotion. She even uses pauses to sound organic.

From a strictly personal perspective, I put together a collection of my favourite Japanese films. Koreeda shows up more than once! Check it out if you're interested. I'm writing not as a film theorist, merely as an appreciative fan who's lived in Japan.

Notice how Eda-san poured water for the translator first then himself. What a humble man!

El maestro actual del cine japonés. No hay otro humanista tan grande como él actualmente en el cine.

He answered all the questions very thoughtfully and mulled over it like chewing over a delicate bento

Loved this interview. Kore-eda is the master of depicting authentic characters who are on the margins.

I really like Micheal Leader (of course) and the translator here is really excellent. Allows this to feel truly like a meaningful conversation.

Even though this interview only has a third person to serve as a translator between two distinct languages, a three person interview creates such an interesting dynamic that it makes me wonder if interviews should more often have a third person to serve as a translator even when only one language is being spoken, similarly to some late night shows.
