I'll be 60 this coming up month. I grew up on Deep Purple. Ritchie Blackmore on guitar - that guitar work is so simple, yet so well constructed. Flawless!
My favourite Deep Purple track. I absolutely love RB's (same as my initials btw! lol) playing and tone but it was largely improvised and he played it differently each time and there was no one take where he was happy and didn't make mistakes. So what you hear on the lead breaks is at least three or four separate takes very carefully interwoven by the sound engineers to sound like he played this all in one go...he didn't and he couldn't remember what he did. Which is why you will never ever find any live example of RB playing this anything like the way he played it on the album because he just couldn't remember what he did and couldn't even play it through seamlessly in one go the same way even in the studio. In fact, on every live performance he plays it completely differently every single time because its just improvised around a basic theme. but I still love the studio version. Another example of that is Jimmy Page's unaccompanied lead break in Led Zep's 'Heartbreaker' - it was purely improvised (most likely JP was stoned too!) and again he simply couldn't remember how he played it. Again, you'll never ever see or hear any live version where he plays it anything like the album. So although guitarists like me try and reproduce this stuff and try & play it note for note, the laughable and ironic part is that even the original guitarist can't do it!
Man, thats interesting! Where did you read that? That whole thing of crafting a solo from different takes is really common in studios but I would never thought Blackmore also did it
A fine example of this is a jam of 8 hours of tape of Cream jamming on a new idea, couldn't picture the whole song. I believe it was Robert Stigwood who took this tape of ideas, cutting and splicing and the end result was SWABLR off Disreally Gears. Listen to it, it's all in the editing.
I'm 66. When this album first came out, everyone I knew had at least one copy (cassette) in their car. One of the finest driving albums every produced.
You can isolate every part of this particular track and still find it flawless. Will always be THE Deep Purple song to exhibit their individual talents collectively .
Every single song on this album is priceless jewel! Vacationed in Germany 1972 with my family listed to this cassette over and over again never got tired of it!!!!!

This was my first 8 - Track too, I played it so much the player ate it, fished it out and bought another one !
One of the first albums I ever bought on vinyl.
It's quite funny to read what you're writing. Because im now 65 and my first LP was Machine Head....🎶🎸😎👍
Ah 8track players CLICK 2:38
Blackmore was the cleanest greatest guitar player of that age Page couldn't compare
Epic intro...One of the best intro's to a song in rock music history!
zacly...
AGREED ! Especially when you picture them in that cold hallway with mattresses plugging the windows and the recording truck a football field away in the middle of Winter , and if you listen after the ending , you hear Ian Paice shout with excitement for an incredible take ! WHAT an ALBUM !................wb
Michigander1969 perfect ending too
THE INTRO IS AMAZING, AND IS SO AMAZING THANKS TO THE BLUES SCALE.... 6 NOTES, 6 SIMPLE NOTES THE BASE OF ROCK N ROLL
Tarot Woman too!
This group was finally inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame this year. Long over do!
Hall of fame was finally honored to represent Deep Purple
Hall of fame is a piece of shiit
Yea and they shut out Ritchie. Bastards
This is what I call some of the finest ROCK N ROLL PEOPLE!!! I love Deep Purple!!! 💗😍🎤🎵🎸🎶
Yeah. Because some people gonna rock, some people gonna roll, they’re gonna have a party to save their souls.
That scream of joy and excitement at the end gets my every time! What an epic song this is and happy they are when they nailed that take - goosebumbs!
Great album!!! You can’t be into hard rock and not dig or respect this piece of musical art. One of the originals when it comes to cranking out some hard rockin chunes my friends!!!
I'll be 60 this coming up month. I grew up on Deep Purple.
Ritchie Blackmore on guitar - that guitar work is so simple, yet so well constructed. Flawless!
Im learning it.. Its demanding to play especially with hardly any overdrive
Interesting comments! When the genius is at work, brilliance ensues!
Blackmore is my god
Man, thats interesting! Where did you read that? That whole thing of crafting a solo from different takes is really common in studios but I would never thought Blackmore also did it
Best Song
A fine example of this is a jam of 8 hours of tape of Cream jamming on a new idea, couldn't picture the whole song. I believe it was Robert Stigwood who took this tape of ideas, cutting and splicing and the end result was SWABLR off Disreally Gears. Listen to it, it's all in the editing.
As a teenager I had this album listened to it the whole thing and really enjoyed it. Im 61 almost and still listen to songs from it.
It's even better when you hit 68. Toker since 69
I'm 66. When this album first came out, everyone I knew had at least one copy (cassette) in their car. One of the finest driving albums every produced.
61 next month 4 me
deep purple one of the first genuine original bands to innovate and set the stages for many to follow,, True Rock n Roll Gold.
59 years old and still get goosebumps when I hear this album. Thanks Turk for turning me on to a great band. RIP
When I was a sophomore in HS they played this album for study hall! Never got tired of it. All great songs.
You can isolate every part of this particular track and still find it flawless. Will always be THE Deep Purple song to exhibit their individual talents collectively .
Bless you ma buddy !! I'm 66 and listening to LAZY Right now. A Luv them to bits. Take care my friend and Keep Rockin !! 🤘
The best entry to any song ever written.
Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore.... don't get much better than that :)
28 years on this earth and I’ve only just come across this song now, thank the lord Jesus Christ ! Time to learn this on the drums!
It's never late to discover awesome music, nor is it ever early.
You picked a good time .
You have a beautiful ear
From an 'old timer'....God bless you!
oh yeah
Every single song on this album is priceless jewel! Vacationed in Germany 1972 with my family listed to this cassette over and over again never got tired of it!!!!!
Never Wil...!1!
I just sang it whilst washing dishes at work today...drove my co-workers nuts, so much fun !!!!😂😊
One of the best albums from that decade.
I'd say of all time....
After that decade it all went down hill.
@@rov3r698 80s were still good, I mean 70s are the best easily but 80s were nice.
One of the best Bands ever! "They will live into infinity"!
Si, la eternidad existe
Jon Lord & Ritchie Blackmore... Dois gênios !!!!!
But they hate each other....
Lawd not lord
This shit never gets old.
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST RECORDS EVER MADE IN ROCK MUSIC, HAND IN HAND WITH FLOYD'S DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. THE BEST LINE UP IN PURPLE HISTORY....
48-years later & this song still gives me goosebumps!
Also, it's amazing that Fourteen of the sixteen current, & former band members are still alive!
Rock on gentlemen, Rock-On!
(RIP John Lord & Tommy Bolin)
The keyboard in this is ridiculous🔥
I likes keyboard,always.V.Bertenelli played for Van Halen
Keyboard? That's a hammod b3 1000 lb organ.

Yeah. I'm in the middle of learning it.
@@VirginiaBeach742 god bless brother😊🙏
Just getting into Deep Purple after hearing from Randy Rhoads himself that Blackmore's stuff is incredible... Bumped into this song on my way down east the 91 here in Cali and holy shit is this fucking amazing. This song is fire!
try the Live version ua-cam.com/video/3avkpMKUTaE/v-deo.html
Deep Purple was the real deal. Live, they were like a force of nature.
Indubitably
One of my all-time favorite intro solos. Blackmore is pure genius .....
Kent Roberts steppin out, Clapton
@@jeffreykaramazov he also took it from elsewhere.. Memphis Slim. But that does not mean that both of them Clapton and Blackmore are geniuses. Cause they were. Also Blackmore's riff is different
@@jeffreykaramazov I'm aware that Blackmore stole the main riff of the song from Clapton's " Steppin' Out " but that has nothing to do with his intro solo to which I referred. But thank you for your idiot comment
Still sounds magnificent after all these years - 43 in fact - flawless and in my opinion best track off of this great album Machine Head
i was lucky to have front row on the perfect strangers tour in pittsburgh and the band was amazing , you just cant cheat passion!!
Whew man....that's one of the all time best jams ever. Richie Blackmore ripping it up, Jon Lord and Ian Paice. It doesn't get any better.
This is the best theme from Deep, without any doubt, its rithm, its base, the bords, and of course the guitar and the voice, amazing the best Deep i have ever heard!!!!!!
Adrian, check out Lazy's precursor "Wring That Neck"! even more technical!
Im gonna be honest... i had only heard Burn/smoke on the water and highway star from them.. Today i decided to listen Machine head.. and Damn....this is by far one of the best songs Ive heard.. Hands Down Deep Purple... i'm 15 btw. freaking masterpeace!
Listen to In Rock too
Yes in rock is also great. But after a year you probably listened to it already
*laughs in being 16 and listening to mark I*
@@bigpapamanman1550 being honest here I kinda prefer in rock than machine head :O
Your on the right road. Rick on youngster.
68 with the headphones on just a rockin.
When I was a little girl, my friends were listening to the Osmond’s, I was listening to my parents albums wide open on the console stereo. Lol. Machine Head was one of them.
딥퍼플이 왜 최고인지 알게 해 주는 명곡🤘👍
These guys are the true meaning of rock perfection !!
Oh yaaaa ! 🔥
and very very loud Live❤❤❤
One of my all-time favorites, actually the entire record is great.
One of the best albums ever, for sure. IMHO, without Ian Paice, it ain't happenin. He's the real engineer drivin this freight train. Rock solid, steady as a glacier. Pushin it along, keeping everything moving, always "out in front" of it. His beat never wavers. One of the best. Truly an amazing moment in time, when everything came together, everyone "firing on all cylinders". Those were the days. Make no mistake about it.
Spot tf on
Ian paice was so underated
You have so adequately, accurately, fully and completely described little Ian's prowess.... Well said!!!
Oh, yes!!
Yo tenía 14 años cuando escuché por primera vez esta semejante obra!!!!nunca más pude soltar,!!!(hoy tengo 62 años)viva el Rock and Roll!!!! Desde 🇦🇷

Yep
Kevin James your right its not easy.you cant hide no mistake when the tone is clean.i remember wen i first heard it.i love hendrix and all the greats and ritchmore was unique
Not the greatest of pyrotechnicians perhaps, but pyrotechnics are over rated.
SIMPLE???
Edmund Vitale Simple? You got to be joking
I was 11 years old when I bought this as my very first album with my pocket money. Still got the said vinyl in my collection. That's the definition of self satisfaction!
So underrated. Shocked to discover it doesn't make any 'Best Rock Songs' list. I love this song, the guitar solo is immense.
+Eradicus yeah! so lazy............. this is song is about my life
Yes!! The Guitar Solo is .......exzellent!!!
+Eradicus Whose "Best rock songs" list does this fail to make? Cease listening to the idiots!
This is one of the greatest Blues/Rock numbers EVER! It was the first DP number I ever heard, and I've been a fan ever since. (44 years)
+Сергей Рудой -- Stevie Ray Vaughn is better than slash - look up top 100 guitarist of all time
"The best" guitarist is very subjective. Personally, I rate SRV as one of the all-time greats. Then again, I also rate Joe Satriani, Robin Trower, John Mayall, and a good few others. All for different reasons, as they all have different styles. Slash, I can't comment on, as I really don't listen to his stuff.
Born in Chicago raised in suburbs this 1/2 influenced by the Chicago Blues on Maxwell Street specifically Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf and 1/2 there Signature Purple MK II lineup🎹🎸🥁🎤💜
I'm 54. Idolized my big brother who had a Deep Purple "Machine Head" album...glad I noticed. Still never gets old
Pure gold from the very first note to the last, goose bumps all over...
Machine Head . . . STILL the album that defines hard rock !!! \m/
65 in October! N I was waiting for my friend to come back with the first release! Course I wasn't even 11! Thank the music reached my ears! The whole album was more than I expected! Music was obviously a "my space to get away from the every day life!👍👍😎😎🎸🎸🎸🎸
This song is straight up amazing. Has the trademark Deep Purple sound, but so much bluesy feel and soul.
I am 62 and I play a little guitar. I remember the first time I heard this song, I was amazed by the two guitar choruses obviously but also by the whole song. I think it's a rare piece of blues / rock I know that swing so much. And it's true that it is almost never mentioned in the lists of the best rock songs or the best guitar solos.
No se han inventado palabras lo suficientemente buenas como para describirla. Sólo queda escucharla una y otra y otra vez.
Has to be the ultimate funeral song. I'd certainly love it at mine. Go out in a blaze of glory! 🔥😄
If you listen to this and you aren't movin'.. you dead!... this came together so good. Was thinking of this song tonight, haven't heard it for years and it is about the best DP did... and they did some really memorable tunes!... soooo damn good!
😌 Master piece.
☝️😲 Lord, Blackmore, Paice, Glover, Gillan, my godness!!!, pure virtuosity 😌.
Whenever I listen to it, it blows my head 🤯
the hammond intro just sends me chills
You and me
That's the medication.😂
I listened to this LP when I was in Nam, over 50 years ago. Smoke on the Water was a staple of all the bar bands in country. Thanks for the memories.
Stuck in the 70's music was and is superior to anything today!!
it's a cool song that takes you where you need to go. and at the end of the day what else do you really need aye
+Richard Boyle not doubt in my mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Richard Boyle by some distance.the standard was absolutely incredible when you think of all the groundbreaking iconic albums that were coming out seemingly every month.a great time to be alive.
You've got to be a freaking dumbass if you cite Tupac as a modern artist when he died in 1996.
Cxero Annuki really??!
One of Deep Purple’s masterworks... Amazing!!!
