Something yet troubles me... in this installment, Raziel seems to have been much more aware of his path and the fate of Nosgoth. He reaches a level of understanding and wisdom so practical and deep... And yet, in Defiance, that is rather lost. He acts impulsively and is heedless in many occasions. He even made some interestingly correct assumptions about the collapse of the Pillars, which in Defiance are no longer part of his speech, for example. Was it the change from Vampire to Hylden concepts

Yeah I just confirmed that Anna Gunn, who was on Breaking Bad, was a voice actor in my favorite game franchise of all time -- Legacy of Kain. Strange....I did not watch breaking bad till 2013 though.
I once thought that if LoK would get a movie, Anna Gunn should better be the live-action Ariel lol. Tbf, she's a good actress, and she does look the part. As for Nupraptor, how about...Bryan Cranston? :D
I love the arguments this game gives to blindly following an object and the fact that throughout an entire game something that on the surface seems so negligible in our days of video games can be made into something so much more with a little more thought and better writing just superb story telling
What I love about the Legacy of Kain game series is how it portrays "evil" stereotypes as sympathetic and "good" stereotypes as self-serving and deluded. Kain, Raziel, Vorador and Janos Audron all have the appearance of what humans would consider monsters and yet they have noble qualities and have good reasons for being cynical and cold, usually because of human cruelty. In general, humans in Nosgoth, particularly the Sarafan, seem to have deluded, self-righteous beliefs. Many of these humans are capable of as much cruelty, if not more so, as vampires, yet they still believe that they are inherently good.
Spare me the sanctimonious bullshit. They're all just as capable of good as they are evil. Imagine living as a human in this world where there are unholy creatures that view themselves as "Dark Gods" and your life as ultimately forfeit so that they can play a game of chess that spans a millennia. You pretend the Seraphan are somehow "more evil" than Kain, Raziel, and Vorador. Why? Because they were led by the nose in the exact same way Janos and Raziel were? Why is Seraphan Raziel a monster for ripping out Janos' heart but Wraith Raziel is "misunderstood" for doing the exact same thing to Kain?
Chris I love how barring Soul Reaver 1, every time Raziel interacts with Ariel he basically rubs it in her face she’s SOL and stuck at the pillars forever.
Doesn't help her, that every time they meet, it happens further and further in the past. From timeline's point of view, they first meet in Defiance around the Blood Omen 1 time. Then they meet 150 years later, and then they meet at least centuries later in Soul Reaver 1. Raziel also joins with Ariel's spirit and other Balance Guardians at Spirit Forge in Defiance, so the whole thing gets really confusing.
Indeed, shame I found your comment so late. And an even greater shame I can ONLY find true fans of this holy series on the Internet but never out in the real world. They really need to bring this back as an HD Collection or do that Soul Reaver reboot they rumored already, THESE GAMES MUST BE KNOWN AGAIN!
yes she is Anna Gun. Elder LoK fans knows it very well :) All voice actors/actresses were great. Series were the masterpieces no doubt! Alas! Still pain in the heart they didnt finalise it... Also what a shame on creators. How you can leave your baby without a mom and a daddy???
+fatih y Yep, I knew who Anna Gunn was long before she showed up on Breaking Bad. A lot of people hear Skyler White when they see Ariel, while I always heard Ariel when I saw Skyler. :)
I thought it was a really cool touch how the newly dead Ariel apparition featured here differs from the one we know from decades and centuries later. Here, she still retains much of her living emotional states (anger, bitterness, hurt, depression, self-pity, despair) from life. I like the idea that some of the former humanity lingers in the personality of the recently deceased, slowly leeching out over time until all that's left is an emotionally devoid coldly rational and calculating entity more akin to an android than a human, well and truly bereft of life.
As being said in the series every member was corrupted kain also by combing herself with him she purified kain in defiance after raziel purified reaver
Hey now, isn't that a little unjust?? Both games are amazing in their own right, I imagine that if the combat for this game was a little more polished, it would have been a greater masterpiece over all.
Devil May Cry is fucking awesome, and deserves every last bit of popularity it enjoys. The Legacy of Kain series has always faltered in the gameplay department, which is a serious flaw for a video game, don't you think? LoK is fun to watch, but it isn't always fun to PLAY.
Through the knowledge Raziel already possessed of history prior to becoming a wraith, paired with what he gained during his venture in Soul Reaver 1&2, Raziel did gain a great level of understanding of Nosgoth. But history is written by the victors, and so Nosgoth's history had some secrets to be uncovered in Defiance. As for his reckless behavior could best be considered a desperate act of self-preservation among hurrying to uncover the truth and his own salvation before history played out.
What pisses me off about Ariel's "Willing instrument" comment about Kain is that SHE was the one who sent him on a quest to take out her fellow guardians and didn't tell him he had to die too. How was he WILLING in ANYTHING? XD He didn't know anything about the Hylden. It sucks that she's trapped at the Pillars but my god, Ariel, stop acting like a victim....
when she claims to be "uncorrupted" this is actually false- she was just as tainted as the other guardians even beyond Death. making her just as blind ot the Elder god as the rest
In the LoK games, time travel cannot cause paradox. We see this many times - when they change something that otherwise would, history and future re-arrange themselves to accomodate the change and keep the same outcome. This is how in Defiance, Raziel can consume Ariel without causing the ill effects noted.
Actually he's the only one that can cause paradoxes, as far as I understood. Him consuming her and dissipating her spirit in Kain purified Kain and could change the flow of history to a huge extent, arming Kain with a weapon that could slay the elder god.
Moebius saw this, too, and engineered the near destruction of the vampire race, leaving Kain as the last guardian, and also the last vampire. If Kain were to take his own life, he'd be ensuring the extinction of the vampires, which Moebius desired. Kain, of course, refused the sacrifice, letting the pillars fall into decay, and built his empire upon their ashes.
I agree with you there, the designs are generally better looking in SR2, but I preferred the way Moebius and the Elder God were portrayed and the way their actors voiced them in Defiance. Just those two specifically. Ariel is just as good in her dialogue in both games but I also preferred her appearance here than in Defiance.
I believe so too. Ariel is the most mysterious character of all. I suppose she was so deeply in tune with Nosgoth's self, that she was a direct expression of the essence around her. As long as Nosgoth decayed, so she turned into a sad and lonely spirit, clinging to false hopes and forgotten hatreds. I loved his words when Raziel meets her at the Pillars in Defiance. And I loved her even more when I saw her whole and pure in the Reaver Forge. D.R.
That's an excellent question. Be regardless of it's techincal validitity, isn't it most important to notice he did not offer? Remember his last sentences. He knows she deserves her punishment. Acting as if her hands are clean, when she just as responsible. Thus, so beautiful to see her so destroyed (morally).
Even though Kain went back in time and Raziel kept following and repeating this, I wonder why Ariel never recognized him from Defiance. Maybe that's because that was the first time Raziel got that far.
You are correct. The meeting with Ariel in Defiance is the first time Raziel got that far. He was destined to be trapped in the Reaver during Soul Reaver 2's ending but Kain altered history by stopping it.
In the 1st LOK she was was the Balance Guardian whom died shortly before Kain was born, this making Kain her successor & guide as he traveled Nosgoth as a fledgling vampire after his own murder in his adult life. SR1 She acts as a guide to Raziel, but in SR2 the time zone makes her a bit more timid/hostile around him. She doesn't appear in BO2 and in LoKD that era of Ariel rudely helps Raziel locate Vorador's manor & in the end she becomes the last forge & purifies the Soul Reaver.
It was the reverse, actually - the pillars exploded at the moment of Kain's choice not to sacrifice himself, which more or less freed the Hylden, allowing the Hylden Lord to possess Janos.

hehe, I love how responses are slow, but are never over. LoK forever.
she wasnt immune ot the corruption, but she had no physical form when it happened if she was truly pure at that point she would be able ot perceive the elder God and the true nature of the wheels of ate and the pillars
@combatmaster "In Defiance Raziel absorbed the souls of the original Ancient Guardians, so there goes that way finding answers out the window." Fortunately, we have other methods at our disposal. For example, I understand there are several timestreaming chambers left strewn about the countryside who's owner only recently died....and as luck would have future Kain spent eons mastering such devices when he discovered the chronoplast.
I kinda wondered what he meant by "You're merely at the threshold." He knows she'll be stuck at the pillars for like, 1000 more years at the very least. Doesn't sound like she's at the threshold to me. lol
he knows what the world becomes since he originally came from the same timeline at least 1500 years after the collapse of the pillars, and the world he was in was jsut as much of a shthole.
@@JulioVonGhoulio The threshold referred by Raziel means that Ariel's imprisonment at the pillars has only just begun. She's destined to stay there for much much longer.
@@EzioYuio I took that as she's at the threshold on the way out, but he meant she's at the threshold on the way in. That makes more sense. But his soft tone at the end led me to believe he was trying to leave her with something a bit more comforting after he basically verbally attacked her. Thanks.
I like how he argues for kain ^^ and how he sighs ,tired of her pathetic disposition.

well, he actually was originally designed to be. but the original SR1 couldnt be finished in time, so they used the chronoplast scene to leave it in a "to be continued" but as SR2 was made, the plot began to change drastically, getting kain out of the villain side, and making the Elder God the great manipulating enemy.
I think the recklessness he presented in Defiance was a result of his own confusion about himself and his place in everything that was happening, and his being tired of seemingly always being a pawn. I think he was just tired of being led around and wanted answers, the cost of getting those answers be damned.
@nothri True that, if time travel has taught us anything it's that the dead can still speak in an era where they are alive but it can also trace a freaky destiny. Like murdering your human self for example. lol
13 років тому
@Marbles194 I believe that the quality and the resolution was definitely better in Defiance, but what SR2 has on its side is the great character designs. I like a lot more how Raziel is portrayed here than how he is in Defiance.
I remember in Soul Reaver 1 there was a cutscene when you looked through a portal in the Chronoplast of Raziel reaving Ariel's soul, the reaver turning yellow, but i've read on a website that there were supposed to be as many reavers as glyphs in sr1 and that Ariel's soul would imbue them all, but obviously they went in another direction.
To think this would have never happened if no one ever listened to the elder god, the two mightiest races (the "vampires" and the hylden) never battled each other and the pillars were never created.^^'
As said a few posts above, the Inquisitors Kain raised to be their Vampire Offsprings were already dead. He had to take their sould directly from the Spectral Realm and re-bound them to their bodies, but that must have required him some extensive use of necromantic powers, I assume, so the transformation was much different than that the Ancients bestowed upon their children. That is why all of the Lieutenants mutated and gained some sort of speciality. D.R.
Kain had ot infuse a portion of his own soul to raise offspring, it was the only way he figured he could sire other Vampires issue was, he as the balance guardian was still corrupted by Nuprator, and that corruptino carried over ot his offspring(if raziel wasnt cast into the abyss to " die", good chance he woudl also end up like his bretheren)
I love this series! But boy, time travel sure does give a headache ^^; I wonder somethin' though, in Defiance, where was future Kain gonna go since he had the perfected Soul Reaver, cured of corruption, and that "bitter taste" of hope.
actually, only one powerful Hylden posseses Janos, the main antagonist of Blood Omen 2 (the Sarafan Lord). This guy however, was the same Hylden possesing Mortanius, by this means, he started the "down with the pillars" plan. At the end of Blood Omen 1, after Kain kills Mortanius, the Hylden inside takes control of the corpse, and gives Kain another battle. After he is defeated, he leaves the body, and as the Pillars collapse, he manages to enter Janos, who was weak because of the cataclysm
Mortanius saw their plan unfolding, recognized it for what it was, and in a moment of clarity, had Kain assassinated so that he could be raised as a vampire, then sent him on his quest to destroy the Circle, so that new guardians could be born. It was Mortanius' belief that Kain would see what had to be done to restore the pillars and, after killing the rest of the circle, take his own life, too.
I wonder... people point out the moment when Ariel in Soul Reaver 1 do not remember her previous encounters with Raziel, but doesn't this scene kinda proves that Ariel was fully deranged in Soul Reaver 1 era and only remembered bita and pieces? I do not remember in detail if that scene is set in future long after Soul Reaver 1 or before, but Ariel does mention "minions of Kain gloating at her" in Soul Reaver 1, so it would lend credibility to theory she remembers bits and pieces - she remembers being confronted but does not remember by whom.
Yea. You're right. It leads fans to believe she was madly insane but they make it unclear and open for speculation because she does rememver some. Poor Ariel.
StarLord Quill, SpaceAce Foxman, Ankhman Catman MoonKnight KISS and they went chasing, pursuing tommy thayer, paul stanley chaim, eric singer the other Kiss! Ariel said to Gene why do you hound me demon. Like in 2009 on YT
In the main storyline, which made that kind of fall possible? Perhaps the evolution of the characters is much more complex than we pressumed. Perhaps the eternity of imprisonment he endured with the Elder God, distorted his judgment and he could no longer summon the ideas he had previously shaped in his mind while he traversed through Nosgoth in SR2. Perhaps he was just too confused to believe those things anymore. D.R.
Wondering how it feels to get a subscribe and like twenty years later 🤣Good idea been enjoying watching random scenes. Wish they would modernize these.
I'd tell you, but you're 3 years early! ;) Fraid there's no new content for you; just Legacy of Kain. Always cool to hear other folks still enjoy the games, though. Maybe someday we'll get remasters, or something, at least.
@combatmaster "I wonder somethin' though, in Defiance, where was future Kain gonna go since he had the perfected Soul Reaver, cured of corruption, and that "bitter taste" of hope." I can only speak for myself, but if I was Kain my next move would be to seek understanding of the pillars, specifically what it is about them that ties the health and vitality of the world to their purity. Then I'd try to find a way to remove that dependence so that the world can thrive with or without the pillars.
😆 No Matt Jones never did acting until 2002 LOL. However after Matt played as Badger in Breaking Bad, He voiced Wedge in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Michael Bell who voiced Drew Pickles and Chaz finster in the original Rugrats series voiced Raziel in three of the Legacy of Kain games.😊
It's probably justified. He's getting jerked around by more or less everyone he meets, all of whom have some agenda they're trying to force him onto the path of, so why wouldn't Ariel, too, from his perspective?

Imagine how fun it would be if he were sharing scenes with Darksiders death
Something yet troubles me... in this installment, Raziel seems to have been much more aware of his path and the fate of Nosgoth. He reaches a level of understanding and wisdom so practical and deep... And yet, in Defiance, that is rather lost. He acts impulsively and is heedless in many occasions. He even made some interestingly correct assumptions about the collapse of the Pillars, which in Defiance are no longer part of his speech, for example. Was it the change from Vampire to Hylden concepts
Maybe the 500 years imprisonment with the Elder God after Soul Reaver 2 could have affected him?
@@TA-by9wv Or it could be that he discovered his fate was to be sealed in the reaver and found it disturbing.
@@Dionysus-207 also for majority of Defiance he was scared shitless of his unavoidable fate - an eternity inside the Reaver blade. It’s only logical he would be acting a bit irrational.
@@Dionysus-207 well who wouldn't being trapped as a soul who being said in the series has been trapped there for eons on eons +time travel = more eons on one sword

I AM NOT IN DANGER, SKYLER I AM THE DANGER
Yeah I just confirmed that Anna Gunn, who was on Breaking Bad, was a voice actor in my favorite game franchise of all time -- Legacy of Kain. Strange....I did not watch breaking bad till 2013 though.
Rafael Cardoso I FUCKED NUPRAPTOR
I once thought that if LoK would get a movie, Anna Gunn should better be the live-action Ariel lol. Tbf, she's a good actress, and she does look the part.
As for Nupraptor, how about...Bryan Cranston? :D
Ariels voice actor is Anna Gunn from breaking bad!!
Anna Gunn is an amazing actress!
She’s the reason why Skyler White is my favorite character in Breaking Bad.
Still remains one of the best scripts to date.
This game is deep, very unique and mind boogling! Thats why i love it!
Raziel meets Skyler White
Liberals
Spare me the sanctimonious bullshit. They're all just as capable of good as they are evil.
Imagine living as a human in this world where there are unholy creatures that view themselves as "Dark Gods" and your life as ultimately forfeit so that they can play a game of chess that spans a millennia.
You pretend the Seraphan are somehow "more evil" than Kain, Raziel, and Vorador. Why? Because they were led by the nose in the exact same way Janos and Raziel were? Why is Seraphan Raziel a monster for ripping out Janos' heart but Wraith Raziel is "misunderstood" for doing the exact same thing to Kain?
the humans are the real monsters trope is pretty common honestly
Raziel is the ultimate Ariel troll.
Chris I love how barring Soul Reaver 1, every time Raziel interacts with Ariel he basically rubs it in her face she’s SOL and stuck at the pillars forever.
Raziel's lucky Ariel can't smack him
Doesn't help her, that every time they meet, it happens further and further in the past.
@@soulreaverable I don't think he's rubbing it in her face, he's just pointing out that she's full of shit.
In reality I think he really pities her.
@dorothydreams oftornadoes Let me restate: Raziel's lucky Ariel didn't smack him for what he said
Indeed, shame I found your comment so late.
Soul Reaver 1 was a story of revenge. Soul Reaver 2 was a story of understanding.
And Defieance, is about redemption!
xD
ARIEL WHERES THE MONEY
I GAVE IT TO KAIN
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
My name is Ariel, yo
As being said in the series every member was corrupted kain also by combing herself with him she purified kain in defiance after raziel purified reaver
After watching Breaking Bad I'm always going to think of Skylar White from Breaking Bad after finding out it's the same actress who voiced Ariel 😂
I’m so glad that Skyler White is my favorite character thanks to Anna Gunn when she voiced Ariel in four of the Legacy of Kain games.
@@Unknown_User174 well I wouldn't say I liked Skylar as a character personally, but yeah, I love Anna Gunn as an actress.
@@jamesreed2366 I understand but Anna Gunn is amazing.
@@Unknown_User174 agreed.
and yet things like devil may cry are way more popular. This truly is an unjust world.
Hey now, isn't that a little unjust?? Both games are amazing in their own right, I imagine that if the combat for this game was a little more polished, it would have been a greater masterpiece over all.
People play games to play them, not watch a movie.
It sucks that she's trapped at the Pillars but my god, Ariel, stop acting like a victim....
when she claims to be "uncorrupted" this is actually false-
she was just as tainted as the other guardians even beyond Death. making her just as blind ot the Elder god as the rest
I always felt bad for Ariel, having to be trapped in Purgatory alone & scared.
😢
It’s about damn time for a remaster of this series
That symbol to the left of Raziel :|

In the LoK games, time travel cannot cause paradox. We see this many times - when they change something that otherwise would, history and future re-arrange themselves to accomodate the change and keep the same outcome. This is how in Defiance, Raziel can consume Ariel without causing the ill effects noted.
Actually he's the only one that can cause paradoxes, as far as I understood. Him consuming her and dissipating her spirit in Kain purified Kain and could change the flow of history to a huge extent, arming Kain with a weapon that could slay the elder god.
@@Crowsinger Wrong. Raziel cannot create paradoxes on his own. The Reaver blade endowed with his own soul from another time is also required.
@@StygianWolf did I ever write that he could do it without the wraith blade?
@@Crowsinger You specifically commented "he's the only one that can cause paradoxes." That doesn't leave much else room for interpretation.
@@StygianWolf there's no need to argue with your interpretation skills about what was the point I wanted to make.
one of the best stories ever, Crystal dynamics makes amazing games and i hope they finish this story soon
JuggaloJohn :) did they now?
More like Ariel meets Raziel
Moebius saw this, too, and engineered the near destruction of the vampire race, leaving Kain as the last guardian, and also the last vampire. If Kain were to take his own life, he'd be ensuring the extinction of the vampires, which Moebius desired. Kain, of course, refused the sacrifice, letting the pillars fall into decay, and built his empire upon their ashes.
I love the Legacy of Kain series it cn never get old, a true classic! never will go out of style!
This games always had grate voices acting.
Alex Benfield itso nneet game
Raziel meets Skyler White at the pillars.
2:49 Raziel: Then consider this
"shows middle finger"
*snicker* I always wondered why vampires only have 3 fingers in the Legacy of Kain series
Thus, so beautiful to see her so destroyed (morally).
i am afraid of ghosts
Raziel:
i wish they would do something new with the storyline
I love Ariel. Because I cannot think of a character who needs love more than herself.
Raziel is a savage in this scene.
My favorite game series of all time
Yeah, LoK can be a lot more delicate and 'labyrinthian' than other game series. I hope (and more) the best for the future of the franchise
I think Ariel actually got her mind poisoned even as a spirit in the end.
she wasnt immune ot the corruption, but she had no physical form when it happened
if she was truly pure at that point she would be able ot perceive the elder God and the true nature of the wheels of ate and the pillars
I kinda wondered what he meant by "You're merely at the threshold."
He knows she'll be stuck at the pillars for like, 1000 more years at the very least. Doesn't sound like she's at the threshold to me. lol
he knows what the world becomes since he originally came from the same timeline at least 1500 years after the collapse of the pillars, and the world he was in was jsut as much of a shthole.
@@Teixas666
Right... And it doesn't sound like she's at the threshold of escaping. So...
@@JulioVonGhoulio The threshold referred by Raziel means that Ariel's imprisonment at the pillars has only just begun. She's destined to stay there for much much longer.
@@EzioYuio
I took that as she's at the threshold on the way out, but he meant she's at the threshold on the way in.
That makes more sense. But his soft tone at the end led me to believe he was trying to leave her with something a bit more comforting after he basically verbally attacked her.
Thanks.
@@EzioYuioEven if she’s at the threshold forever,
I pity her.
Like her beloved boyfriend Nupraptor.😔
Thus allowing him the opportunity to look for the third option to get out of Moebius's trap and save Nosgoth.
@nothri True that, if time travel has taught us anything it's that the dead can still speak in an era where they are alive but it can also trace a freaky destiny. Like murdering your human self for example. lol
@Marbles194 I believe that the quality and the resolution was definitely better in Defiance, but what SR2 has on its side is the great character designs. I like a lot more how Raziel is portrayed here than how he is in Defiance.
Which occurred both after and before Kain acquired it, depending on how you look at it, which is the point I was trying to make. :)
That happened later, in Defiance
But did you know this is the actress who plays Skyler in Breaking Bad?
All they do is argue and disagree, she just tells him he is a liar and Raziel just says things to hurt her...so yeah you're right
Using the moment of Kain's choice at the pillars as T, the game goes from T-500 to T+500 to T-30, ending there.
Kain had ot infuse a portion of his own soul to raise offspring, it was the only way he figured he could sire other Vampires
issue was, he as the balance guardian was still corrupted by Nuprator, and that corruptino carried over ot his offspring(if raziel wasnt cast into the abyss to " die", good chance he woudl also end up like his bretheren)
he said around a century after kain's refusal of the Pillars
I love this series! But boy, time travel sure does give a headache ^^; I wonder somethin' though, in Defiance, where was future Kain gonna go since he had the perfected Soul Reaver, cured of corruption, and that "bitter taste" of hope.
Riiight, now I remembers.
actually, only one powerful Hylden posseses Janos, the main antagonist of Blood Omen 2 (the Sarafan Lord).
I don't get Skylar from this...
Damn, even as a ghost Ariel is hot
I wonder... people point out the moment when Ariel in Soul Reaver 1 do not remember her previous encounters with Raziel, but doesn't this scene kinda proves that Ariel was fully deranged in Soul Reaver 1 era and only remembered bita and pieces?
lol raziel "your merely at the threshhold"
Came here after watching an episode of Breaking Bad.
@Joudas it didnt become the soul reaver until raziel was absorbed into the blood reaver.
It's almost creepy to me how it seems like they based Ariel on her voice actor.
So many twists and turns. I thought Ariel was all good in Soul Reaver 1
Then I'd try to find a way to remove that dependence so that the world can thrive with or without the pillars.
around nosgoth, making his empire
if only Ghosts were really not hackers.
Holy shit Badger is voicing Raziel!!!!!
😆 No Matt Jones never did acting until 2002 LOL.
However after Matt played as Badger in Breaking Bad,
He voiced Wedge in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Michael Bell who voiced Drew Pickles and Chaz finster in the original Rugrats series voiced Raziel in three of the Legacy of Kain games.😊
Most likely raising a vampiric army to combat Mobieus' mobs.
Razeil actually letting is his paranoia set in now, maybe Mobius was right about him seeing betrayal around every corner.
It's probably justified. He's getting jerked around by more or less everyone he meets, all of whom have some agenda they're trying to force him onto the path of, so why wouldn't Ariel, too, from his perspective?
