I'm explaining one of the frequently asked questions in drumming. What are the differences between a twin pedal with a single kick drum and 2 single pedals with 2 kick drums? I have categorised these differences into 4 main topics:

Dude after watching your video, I converted my double pedal to two singles, there’s a huge difference in the rebound, my weaker feet plays much better and easier on 2 singles. 🤘

When I was a drummer as a teenager I used a double pedal and I realized that the left one had always less rebound b cquse it haves to move all the mechanism that links it to the bass drum.
It's physically impossible to make a double pedal that it feels the same for both feet.
Now I'd prefer a cheap double bass with single pedals than a double pedal with a single bass drum, as my objetive is to be as accurate as possible with both feet and have the same power.

nice very condensed guide, i'm a total newb at this and just want to thank you for your stuff.
Regardless of using double bass or not, I always love the kind of setup there the rack toms aren't directly positioned above the main bass drum like the one in 14:19. I even make my own stand by using my already boken cymbal stand and combine it with a clamp to attach the rack toms.
I personally hate it and felt very uncomfortable when the rack toms are right above the bass drum (most drumsets, especially the cheaper ones like under $800, are like this). Look-wise while on stage, it felt weird when they had to make the bass drum to face the audience directly, because it would make my sitting position to be at a slightly angled to the left. And I had to reach further for the ride cymbal because it's placed farther. This is also probably why I don't really like playing electric drums as they're all set like this, and even if I have to, I usually only use 1 rack tom and set the other rack tom to be the ride cymbal instead.
But if I make the rack tom to be on a separate stand, I can palce the ride cymbal closer to me, almost right above the bass drum. And I can face the audience at a straight angle, the bass drum is the one that's at a slightly angled to the right instead.
Here in my country direct drive pedals are very very very expensive, and young people choose to modify them themselves, they remove the chain and put new traction machinery on it. What do you think of that? greetings good vibes.
I been tryin to do this double kick pedal thing in a death metal band for a few years now. I think Erce is the only one on here who is realistic about the whole training process. There are all the guys with the heel foot stuff, but, to be honest, without a teacher (which I can't find) who knows how to do it; hmm.... it's fairly hard to understand. AND, btw, I tried 2 kicks the other day for the first time; it is much easier, as in, I can pull it off well.

For the life of me, I just can never get the slave pedal to function as smoothly as the main. I have been trying this for years using various pedals. There's always a lag even if it's slight. I want an even playing field for both feet. It's time to upgrade to double kick drums.

Seeing how the 2nd command pedal on the double kick pedal has that friction shock tension which gives less even flow between the feet is a universal disfunction really puts into perspective exactly how I'd prefer to play.
It also tells me I've been too hard on myself thinking I couldn't perform as evenly as I can with 2 kick drums.
I was intending on getting a second kick drum, which the configuration may not be fit for every performance, but will definitely utilize a better sense of even flow between my feet imo.

i got the ludwig backbeat as a house kit for my home studio and there's still a difference in tone between the two beaters which might mean that two mics could pan them though i'm not sure how much my drummer notices a different feeling than two kicks

If you can't afford two basses you can always place your floor tom by your hight hat, then muffle the bottom head, and take another single pedal, invert the cam, so it hits upwards, and use the bottom of the Floor Tom as a makeshift bass drum, alongside your regular bass drum. You can even muffle the top head of the floor tom a bit, so you can also drum on it that way, freeing up a leg for your high hats or other percussions, or create the illusion of quadruple bass drumming by doing the latter + the former.

There's another thing for twin vs double bass. It's tuning. While you adressed it here, i remember when i got double bass. it looked so cool. But tuning the two exactly the same was really hard for a "beginner/intermediate" and lead to a ton of frustration.
Sold it and got only one bass drum after.
So i would add that it's "bad" for beginners to have a double bass if you are not willing to put the time for tunning and placements.
You don't have to tune "exactly" the same. I never tuned mines exactly the same for 16 years.

Long time ago many drummers played on two different sized bass drums.
Okay, I think my twin pedal is really bad because when I put the spring tension very tight and same to both pedals, I can't even hit that left one to the drum head ): So I have to put the left one more loose than the right one.

I got a Trick drive shaft for my Pearl elims and there is no discernible lag in the slave pedal, I concede that the stock drive shaft was crud tho.

He says that on twin pedal setups, one beater is at the centre and the other is a bit further from the centre.
In my drum school the double pedals' beaters are both the same distance from the centre so they sound quite similarly.
That is why i wrote this extra note to the video which you didn' t read: "with some pedals you can reduce the difference acoustically by taking the right beater closer to the right".

I prefer using 2 twin pedals(quadruple pedals) and use heel toe technique to achieve double strokes just like morgan from henker he used 2 twin pedals and achieve 600 bpm.

I am not a good drum but from the first day i can play ACDC song i used double bass because it simply looks cool and my all drum hero used two kick drum lars ulrich dave lambardo Jimmy the rev charlie benante and other portnoy soo i simply fall in love with two kick drum from the first time buying drum it simply look badass but my talemt is not that good to be honest i am like lars ulrich bad at timming the only thing i am good at is Playing somehow fast like metallica song and stuff and i cannot play any technical song because i am bad hi hate close open stuff sooo haha i am like lars simply playing the beat fast simple but groove and i love using double bass sometime i used double bass where the studio version play only sing beat lol thats how much i love double kick drum even though i am bad i am still very happy playing drum for being happy and playing drum is my goal happy doing what i love pounding drum and doublebass dokkkkkkkkk instead of becoming like thomas lang or mike portnoy playing like lars ulrich is more fun than portnoy and thomas lang stuff thats my opinion

I'm not going to get into a discussion about if it is better 2 bass drums or a double pedal. For me, it seems way more practical a double pedal than 2 bass drums (though I've got nothing against them anyway, and in fact I think they're cool). The little nuances that we could find regarding sound or feel may be real, but are insignificant to me, even more in a musical context with a rock or metal band, and way, way more for those drummers who use triggers (not my case), often with a ton of dampening on the batter side. Does anyone really notice the difference in sound in those cases, specially in ultra fast double bass patterns or fills? Does anyone really notice a difference in feel with 2 bed pillows, a winter blanket and a persian rug inside the BD, leaning on the batter head(s)? (Yes, I know it can be more noticeable in other musical contexts, with no triggers and no heavy dampening, yet it still seems insignificant to me compared with a double pedal).
If I had a second bass drum, it would be a different size than my main one, with a double pedal on my primary BD and a simple one on my secondary one. That's just me, it ain't better or worse than any other choice.
However I've always wondered why some drummers, in a gig, mount 2 bass drums, but only use one of them with a double pedal while the other one hasn't even a pedal attached. Is it more practical for mic'ing it, etc? Yes, ok... but why to bother mounting another BD then? Only for the look?
Yes especially metal bands rarely put second kick and use twin pedal for some live shows (usually dvd productions). It's not cool, a bit lame imo.
@@ErceArslan hi Erce. I'm not sure I understood when you say "rarely put second kick". You mean they set it on the stage, but don't even mic it, isn't it? If so, yes, that's exactly what I mean. I remember a Slipknot show where you could say that the left Jordisson's kick was only used to attach a paper with the set list to the batter head as he used a double pedal on his right kick (it seems a bit expensive for a music stand imo). However I've seen other shows where he actually uses both bass drums. I don't know, maybe I'm just a practical guy and I don't like to mount gear that I know for sure I'm not going to use, only for aesthetics. I guess most of the public in an arena wont even notice that, but I just don't like it.

@@isihernandez9752 you are welcome🙂🙏🏼. Yes sometimes it's just for aesthetics. It's part of the stage show of big bands like Slipknot so whether if he uses second kick or not they always put it. As you said the difference is unnoticable especially with the exciement and joy of such kind of concerts. I just talk about the differences in this video because no one is ever compared these two before. It's of course musicians personal choice to use it or not.
@Bart Lee well, first, I said I wasn't going to get into the topic about if one choice was better or worse than the other, but it doesn't mean I can't express some thoughts about some aspects of both choices, not necesarilly as a matter of better or worse, good/bad, etc. And it doesn't mean either that I refuse any debate.
And last, who are you to tell me if I can or cannot comment? If you're not interested in what I say, that's fair, but you know you have the choice to ignore it and go on, right?
From what i remember Virgil Donati use a twin pedal and he have a lot of complex foot work. Because he is old school ? Or because he is a God and it doesn't matter ;)
There are lots of drummers use twin pedal and have a lot of complex footwork. As a specific example you can count Thomas Lang's footworks with him on god level:). These differences which i have mentioned here are very small. Just to show you the differences.

No don't adjust the spring tensions differently. Unfortunately we can't overcome this issue:( but with a good quality pedal or direct drives you will not feel it much when you play. It is a very small difference actually.

i usually add a little weight on the right beater rod to slow it down, so that both swing at the same speed and distance. using high springtension and light beaters makes you feel the additional weight of the slavepedal/connection link a lot more which really caused me problems. with the synchronized beaterswing i finally managed to progress further when i was stuck for 2 years.
