Mike Rowe, I was always a big fan of him because he respected hard and dirty work, unlike many who are out of touch with the labor that keeps our world running. Many people are leaving this kind of work because we’ve been disrespected over the years. I started working in manufacturing in October 2005, and here I am, almost 20 years later. I started as a guy making boxes to ship products. I used my free time to learn how to run one of the machines in the department. Soon after, I learned how to run all the different machines in the department. When I got bored with that, I learned how those machines worked more in depth and became a Machinist. Then I learned how the programming worked and became a CNC Programmer. Now, I’m almost 40, and my passion has faded. It’s been such a tough journey, but I finally work in the engineering department in a comfortable job. Every day, I dream about doing something more creative on my own outside of manufacturing. It’s like the communism in the workplace, once you see it, you can’t unsee it. You lose your creativity, everything is standardized, and there are all these systems in place. You’re expected to just be a robot in most of these roles just going by if then statements to solve problems with the procedures set in place. I feel like it starts to drain the life out of you. People like me who are good and adaptive at solving problems have no place in this style manufacturing anymore. We're just a cog in a wheel, people like Mike have good intentions, but I feel like they’re out of touch with what manufacturing has become.
