  • This video I show you my 1st snare drum - the Ludwig LM404 black acrolite. Ask any drummer about their 1st snare, and most likely they will remember. Some "collectors" like myself still have them, so in this video you get to see it - and the modifications I did to it that might not have been a great idea.

    I found a used Acrolite with it's bag, stand and rubber practice pad for under $100. Everything was in excellent condition. I didn't need it but hard to pass up a good deal like that.

      Looks like it was ruined, but I agree - it does have a decent sound. What playing scenario could you see yourself using this on?

      Didn’t like as much in the lower tune but mid and high was fine. I had a late 60s Accro from new and traded it to on a 5x14 8 lug I still have.

    • @NickCostaMusic

      I liked it in the higher tunings as well - more direct and crisp. What was the 5X14 8 lug that you traded for? Was it another metal or wood drum?

    Nick, your timing is perfect, last month I picked up an 80's Ludwig Acrolite at (believe it or not) an Antique Radio Swap Meet in Kutztown - mint condition for $100. So I'm walking around Renninger’s, marveling at all the antique radios (my second passion after drums) and suddenly I spot a vendor with this gorgeous snare in his booth. Sometimes Lady Luck throws us a bone. Thanks for another great video!

      That's a great buy! I remember when they started creeping towards $125 and everyone on drum forums were freaking out how expensive. Now going $225+ and higher depending on condition and era, that's a great find!

    Sounds better than decent to me. I wonder how it would sound with an internal mic - only because it's possible, but still curious.

    The Ludwig Acrolite snare drum is a great value for the money. It has essentially the same shell as the alloy shell Supraphonic. I have an Acrolite in the 'Black Galaxy' finish circa early 1980's. A good drum it plays as well as my Ludwig Supersensitive snare drum (which cost a lot more money).

    • @NickCostaMusic
      @NickCostaMusic  Рік тому +1

      Totally. The lack of chrome plating made them a bit drier, but then they had 8 lugs. They've been studio secrets for decades now, and I can totally see why

  • @aparker507

    My blacro beats nearly every snare of mine in the studio, and I've got some really nice high end snares. Just can't beat them!

      I’ve always thought the aluminum shell on these have a slightly warmer crack and sound than the Supraphonic. You can’t beat the price at least back in the day. This one your demoing not only sounds superb but looks awesome

    That thing sounds good to me. I’ve had 3 or 4 of those Blacros. Now just 1. Practically brand new with case and stand for $75. I will never sell it. Bought from a Houston Ballerina 🩰 dancer too.
