    I’m a restoration specialist and use a sodering iron, not a gun type but cheap iron and makes perfect holes!

    Wow, that is a great trick. I would have never thought of melting a hole with an old socket!

    Brilliant works a treat. Just did my front foot well mats on the car with perfect sealed round holes that fit over the locating stubs in the carpet to prevent sliding as per factory tailored mats. Thanks

      @ClassicCarRestorationClub I just used this technique for some custom-made floor mats. They were made of leather and cloth. Did just like you said, then put factory floor mat holders in the holes, now I have zero slide or movement from my aftermarket floor mats, and they look professional.

    Not a comment as much as a question. What about the smell after the install?

    How would a gasket punch work?

    • @ClassicCarRestorationClub
      @ClassicCarRestorationClub  7 місяців тому

      Yes, a gasket punch or hollow punch would make a nice round hole.
      What I like best about heating an old socket is that the process of making the hole also melts the ends of the carpet, keeping the carpet fibers from fraying.
      Not to mention almost everyone has an old set of cheap sockets around, or they can be bought for just a couple bucks at the next swap meet.
      Wrench Safe, Mark

    Can't I just use a carpet punch???

    • @ClassicCarRestorationClub
      @ClassicCarRestorationClub  5 років тому +3

      Hi Gabriel,
      Yes a carpet punch will do the same job.... If you have one the right size that is... and for many enthusiasts they'll likely only make a few holes ever.
      So the expense of a specialty tool for only a couple uses is a decision each of us make when building a car.
      Personally I prefer this method as the heat fuses the carpet strand ends making them less prone to fray.
      But yes there is more than one way to get the job done.
      Hope this helps,
      Mark
