Cutting perfectly round fray-free holes in carpet is a lot easier than you thought, Mark Simpson demonstrates a quick tip to help your next carpet installation project go easier.
I’m a restoration specialist and use a sodering iron, not a gun type but cheap iron and makes perfect holes!
Perfect solution! Many thanks from Aus💯🏅
Nice! I was noodling around with the idea of heating up an apple corer. This is perfect.
Wow, that is a great trick. I would have never thought of melting a hole with an old socket!
I’ve thought I’d do something Like this but with a solder. Would never thought of a socket Good trick!!
Brilliant works a treat. Just did my front foot well mats on the car with perfect sealed round holes that fit over the locating stubs in the carpet to prevent sliding as per factory tailored mats. Thanks
Hey thanks! Looks professional....heck of alot better than the oringinal hack job!
This is brilliant and it worked great!
Thanks Mark!

Awesome!Great tip
That's just wonderful. Thank you.
So glad you liked it!
@ClassicCarRestorationClub I just used this technique for some custom-made floor mats. They were made of leather and cloth. Did just like you said, then put factory floor mat holders in the holes, now I have zero slide or movement from my aftermarket floor mats, and they look professional.
Great tip. Thank you.
Great stuff! And yes, my wife gives me a hard time for using her good scissors.
Not a comment as much as a question. What about the smell after the install?

My god this is a good idea.
How would a gasket punch work?
Yes, a gasket punch or hollow punch would make a nice round hole.
What I like best about heating an old socket is that the process of making the hole also melts the ends of the carpet, keeping the carpet fibers from fraying.
Not to mention almost everyone has an old set of cheap sockets around, or they can be bought for just a couple bucks at the next swap meet.
Wrench Safe, Mark
I’m scared it was going to burn the carpet start a fire
Im just here because that fingernail thumbnail😬
Can't I just use a carpet punch???
Hi Gabriel,
Yes a carpet punch will do the same job.... If you have one the right size that is... and for many enthusiasts they'll likely only make a few holes ever.
So the expense of a specialty tool for only a couple uses is a decision each of us make when building a car.
Personally I prefer this method as the heat fuses the carpet strand ends making them less prone to fray.
But yes there is more than one way to get the job done.
Hope this helps,
Mark
