  • In this video, we show you step-by-step how to install a carpet in your classic car. We used high quality mass-backed carpeting from Auto Custom Carpets. We're no experts on the subject, but this video should give you enough courage to tackle this job yourself.

It took a couple hours, not too bad. We didn't get to really test it out because Lin sold the car shortly after we did this, but it does make a significant difference. Think about it, the original setup only had small patches of underlayment, whereas this mass-backed carpet gives you full floor coverage.

i know what you mean, when i went to restore my 69 firebird, it was ALL patches of carpet, instead of just one carpet, it makes a huge difference.

Well, these mass-backed carpets are made by Auto Custom Carpets. I looked on their website for you and it looks like they used to have a molded carpet for you car (not mass-backed probably) but they have discontinued it.
You might try getting in touch with them to see if it's possible to get one made. Good luck!

it was a good idea to seal the floor pans with some POR 15 while you have the carpet out, specially the front driver side started to get some rust

The MLV on this carpet is 4 mils thick. I can buy MLV that is 10 mils thick and rated at 1 lb per sq foot. I'm sure that it would give me better results, and the price of this rated MLV is approx the same as ACC's.
Bottom line: ACC's mass backed carpeting has a rating of approx 1/2 lb per sq ft and costs as much as 1 lb per sq ft MLV,. The coating prevents easy re-installation of the seats. It is inferior to DIY MLV and what is trimmed from the DIY 1 lb can be applied to side panels.

What you're paying for with MB carpet is ease of installation, but ACC neglected to allow easy seat installation. You don't need to cover every sq inch of the floor, and ACC didn't allow for the seat rails or bolts. You'll work longer on DIY MLV, but you'll get better results with it.
I'm not paying for 1/2 lb MLV that costs the same as 1 lb. ACC's MB carpet kits will give some improvement, but not the best, and it isn't coated correctly. The mass back option needs a 50% price reduction.

Put the rear carpet in first so the front carpet overlaps it. There is a hemmed edge on the front piece. Go easy with that box cutter!

I know this is an old video but the lesson is timeless. How long did it take you to do? I'm an average joe who knows nothing about carpet installation but I also do not want to pay the $325 in labor my local shop is going to charge to install my carpet kit.

It's definitely doable, but set aside a few hours! Probably best to dedicate a Saturday to get it done.

The 68 Cougar and 68 Mustangs are not the same length, so they do use different carpet kits. Auto Custom Carpets does make a mass backed carpet kit for the 68 Mustang.

Think about it, there are many ways to add sound insulation, some better and some next to worthless. You could lay a layer of mass loaded vinyl (MLV) that is rated. They come in pound per square foot ratings. There is 1 lb, 1/2 lb, and others. I know of two web sites that offer MLV backing for my car, but neither of them can tell me what the weight is per square foot. The mass backing isn't cheap. I might get better results by installing a carpet kit and a layer of RATED MLV bought elsewhere.

Any advise on preventing runs on the carpet from the yarn catching on and wrapping around the console screws as they are turned to install (or even un-installing the console)? The old carpet in the video showed signs of that and my experience with my first Cougar taught me that it can happen easily if the console is removed and reinstalled. I'm getting ready install new carpet in my 70XR7 and don't want to start with runs.

    • @70xr7tom8
      @70xr7tom8 8 років тому +1

A small soldering iron to open up the hole a bit and fuse the fiber ends. If the backing is synthetic too then it too will be prevented from getting caught by the screws. Just a little bit of white paint from a paint pen to mark the holes made them easy to find and realign.
I kept looking on the internet and answered my own question, and got the console installed.

What was the total time spent on installation? And whut? No report on the performance of the mass backing? I sure woulda liked to hear about how well it does it's job.

Lot of car owners have been sold an unnecessary bill of goods on Dynamat, Lizard Skin, etc. Adds a lot of weight to the vehicle and is a terrible mess when you need to remove it. Don't be a sheep just cuz everyone else does it.
