You have the mindset of a winner, which is never a bust! Played your heart out and got hit w injuries, which really sucks but it happens, wish it didn't but it is what it is, something you didn't have control over. You then chose to help others learn about the game, to contribute your knowledge, that too is from the mindset of a winner! Great channel!

Right on. I had a similar experience in my own career (not MLB. But trust me, it was a similar experience). And I went around and around on the whole failure/bust/self-doubt question. But the fact is that almost no one was able to do what I could do.
Same for you. Of the millions of people who have played baseball, an almost inconceivably small percentage even come close to MLB. And you are part of that select group. Nothing to be ashamed of. You made it to the top, if only for a moment. And very few people can say that.

Those rude people dont understand how pro sports work. Im a former football player and its the same in every sport. There are thousands of ppl who are drafted high and told they are the strongest and fastest coming into camp and they get there and have a rude awakening and end up being a practice dummy running then opponents plays . Its so hard to make it in any pro sports hockey too. So many good athletes also get overlooked and fall through the cracks. Dude you played in the Big League, you are a very small percentage of ppl. You are anything but a bust. I wouldnt even resond to those people. Even now you are helping so many people after your career. Good on you!

You don't ever have to address that question again. I'm almost in awe of you - that you were that good, went that far, got a taste of your dream. And you refrained from stating the obvious : your God-given talent put you in an exclusive group that the rest of us just gawk at.
Saw an interview featuring Ken "Hawk" Harrelson earlier. He was addressing the emphasis on metrics in the game and he talked about "TWTW" - "the will to win. "
Talent isn't enough; metrics don't tell the whole story. TWTW kept you getting up every day determined to get better. That's why "bust" never entered your mind as a self-description, because you knew every day that you were doing your best. I know you sleep well at night.
Again, great response. You're going places!
Oh - thanks for mentioning David Friese : he's etched in Cardinals history. But for you to remark on assessing him as a better player just shows what a generous guy you've always been. You are rare.

According to Wikipedia a sports bust is described as the following: "A draft bust occurs when a highly touted or highly selected draftee does not meet expectations. This can be for a variety of reasons, but the most often noted are injury or inability to perform at a professional level. A player is also regarded as a larger bust if more successful players are drafted after him or her."
As far as making an impact to the game of baseball, Matt is sharing knowledge that is unheard of and that will have a lasting impact to the sport for years to come. I wish there was someone unselfish like you when I was growing up and playing the game. I've never admired any athlete of the sport when playing the game butt Matt in my book your a legend and I appreciate everything your doing for the sport!

Baseball has the most brutal system of filtration hockey maybe second. I think Matt explained this very well. I worked with a guy who played in the Cardinal org. in the 80's. I believe he was a low draft pick but made it to low A ball "which was a miracle" as he would say. He had some of the best stories though.

Focusing on what you can control and do yourself is the key to any success. Emphasizing that to your audience is the sign of a confident successful individual. Also, I assume the trainers and coaches are better at the MLB level than all other levels. So those guys have resources that you probably didn't have. It seems like climbing Mount Everest. The base of the mountain is steep, but walkable. Then you get close to the peak and it is a wall hundreds of feet high you need to scale. From a front office perspective, a minor bust. I think the expectation is that 1st round picks should contribute at the MLB level for a few years. But I bet more guys are “busts” than not, and as long as you didn’t miss out from poor choices or lack of effort, you should still be damned proud of what you did. Most of us fans would love to have been able to do as well as you did. Plus, you are doing a lot of great work in the baseball community online and locally. I think a lot of people misuse the term bust vs failure and the perspective of the team vs the individual. Not doing as well as a team hoped “bust” sure doesn’t mean you failed as an individual.

Matt can you do a video about hitting being reactionary? This is one thing I could never get my dad to understand when I was playing in high school. You either have quick hands or you don’t. It’s something you are born with.

You're 1 of less than 20,000 guys that have played in the entire history of MLB. That's an elite group. That's an amazing achievement.

You're anything but a bust. I would have give my right arm To achieve what you did. Playing in the major leagues Is never achieved by luck. Hard work dedication and talent. Props to you, brother

Well said; it takes a lot of courage to post a UA-cam video posing this type of question about yourself. Yes, I think in some circles, there may be a perception that any first round pick who does not succeed at least reasonably well in the majors is something of a "bust"-- especially considering the substantial bonus money typically paid. However, as you point out, that perception is totally unfair when you consider the difficulty of achieving that goal and the number of first round picks who never make it to the show. Add the issue of recurring injuries to the mix, and the label "bust" is even more inaccurate and unfair.

Having bad wrist/hands doesn't count as being a bust, its health related, take away the injuries and chances are you'd still be in the pros today, period.

Good on you to never think of yourself as a bust. First of all you played in the big leagues. That in itself is success. Only one athlete gets a gold medal per event at the olympics. Doesn’t mean all others are a bust. Even if they came in last place that is still not a bust. That is great success. You get to live your life making a living off of what you truly love “baseball”. Playing, teaching and coaching. You have a son who plays baseball, you have a family who supports what you do and you are able to provide for them, via the game of baseball. If that is not true success my friend, I don’t know what is.

Your such a humble dude! Have you always been this way? Or did it happen once you realized you would never be called back up to the Major Leagues? Btw you are better then 99.99% of the people who call you a bust! At least you made it... Unlike a mast majority of people who try and NOBODY can take that from you! Keep your head up.

When I think of busts i think of Todd Marinovich, Ryan Leaf, Ricky Williams, or Doc Gooden. People who didn't do everything within their power to achieve the greatest that we the public thought they could. If what happen to you had happened to a guy drafted in the 30th round we would say "damn this guy did more than what we expected" so I dont think injuries constitute a bust or not. It's just bad luck and a shitty deal.
Sorry for the late response. I just stumbled on the channel because my nephew just signed with UVA as a catcher and was looking at your recruiting videos. I hope you see this and God bless.

This is so awesome! Young kids need to know this so that they have a real plan A in life. Ball is a goal and a Dream but shouldn't be a plan A! It's so hard and even if you work hard you still may not make it.

I never get how people who got cut from their high school team say that someone who made it to The Show is a bust. I really admire Matt for his honesty and humility. It takes a lot of balls to go on UA-cam and talk about your career ups and downs. It's not people in corporate America have to have their careers discussed publicly. Oh Chris didn't get promoted to that Director position. Man, his career is a bust. Let's write an article about it.

In the past, we only heard of the success stories, 20 year guys, hall of famers etc. Your vid illustrates how difficult it is to play in the majors, going through all the minor league levels. Football and basketball doesn't have that. Injuries and they jacked with your stance. Injuries aren't predictable.

Honestly screw the haters. You dont owe anyone an explanation. You were one of the best players in the world for A.just getting drafted and B. Actually playing in the major leagues. Those haters are just jealous and upset that they didnt make it as far as you did sobto make themselves feel better they hate on you. Think of it like this maybe God's plan for you was not to be one of the 150 greatest players in the world but to the best baseball coach in the world and in order for you to get to that point you had to have your personal expierences in baseball that you did bc that would make you the best that you are today. Keep on making kids better brother! I love your videos!
