    "They do have personalities" no statement has ever been so true! Our beardie has a BIG personality. Unfortunately it's more the 'I want to do my own thing and run around' than the cute 'let's cuddle' kind haha.

    as someone who's volunteered with animal rescues, i love this video's message! the older an animal gets, the more difficult it is for us to find new homes for them bc everyone wants babies - this goes for all animals; dogs, cats, rodents, reptiles, etc. but adult animals are just as incredible as babies! and rescuing senior animals is especially rewarding imo 💚

      Yes to this!!! My husband and I adopted our first pet together early last year. She’s a senior cat named Peaches and we are her fourth home. She was always quite sweet, and surprisingly brave for all she’s been through, but it’s truly amazing to realize her relationship with us is *still* deepening and changing. We’ve had her for almost a full year and she’s just started curling up right next to us on the couch instead of a few inches away. I’ve been around animals my whole life and I can honestly say I have never experienced anything quite like it! I am such a huge proponent of adopting seniors now!

    In early December, I rescued a female betta fish. Every time I mention that it gets a weird reaction. Many people don’t consider adopting small pets. She was in terrible condition and the shelter didn’t really know how to care for her which is understandable. Now in January however, she is doing incredibly well. She grew in surprisingly large fins and is the most energetic betta I’ve ever met. She is also quite a voracious eater and a glutton and beggar 😆

    I prefer getting a baby beardie because I get to watch their personality develop as they grow, and enjoy the surprise of who they're going to be. That said, my boy was technically a rescue baby when I got him a decade ago because he was born without the ability to move his legs and wasn't expected to live. It took months of daily bath therapy but ten years later he's still going strong and able to move around his enclosure. My now deceased female was a rescued adult and had the biggest temper I've ever seen on a nonaggressive beardie. I loved her and she never bit but my goodness she was mad at the world!

    I rescued a Crested Gecko from a Petsmart. It was free and "for adoption" because it wasn't growing. Since I had it, been growing like a weed. My Gargoyle Gecko was a relinquishment find. I didn't want to spend over $250+ on one, but I found one for $100 who wasn't wanted.. She was in a bad shed, and was missing a front toe. But since I had her she's had perfect sheds and her missing toe doesn't seem to bother her.

    I've avoided a beardie because of how much they eat and how much daily care they require. I have snakes and tarantulas because I prefer to reserve daily care energy for my dogs. But my kiddo is 7 now and now his dad wants one too so I'm considering it. I also have a spare zen habitat and most of the supplies anyway. I've been thinking an adult would be ideal because they eat way more veggies and I have plenty of big roaches (I breed three different colonies, WAY more than my spiders eat and only one eats big roaches). Plus, it won't be a responsibility we will be saddled with long past when my son eventually loses interest, assuming he will like most kids. Or maybe he doesn't, but I don't want him to start his adult life with a huge responsibility. We may foster first to make sure everyone is up for the care before we make an adoption commitment as we've done plenty of reptile foster already.

    • @snowps1
      @snowps1 2 роки тому

      How much daily care do you think they need? You just feed them and clean up their poop. They aren't anymore work than my cats honestly. I had guinea pigs for 6 years and I would never do that again. My beardie is very low maintenance compared to the guinea pigs. He poops 2 or 3 times a week. They pooped 100 times a day!

    • @kwiggy5091
      @kwiggy5091 2 роки тому +1

      @@snowps1 Change water, make salad, spot clean daily. A lot more poop than my snakes 🤣 For a reptile, they require a bit more work. Especially babies, since they eat a ton of protein, but I wouldn't get one. For reference, I've been managing pet stores for a decade so I've cared for thousands of them.

    I rescued my boy from a friend of a friend who was rehoming him. I paid $20 for him with his enclosure. Sadly his enclosure was only a 20 gallon long. He had been kept in the 20 gallon long, with no uvb, eating his favorite foods (ham and cilantro 🤮) for 6 years. I got him right after his 6th birthday. I immediately got a 40 gallon tank for him and have been trying to upgrade him to a 4x2x2 for almost a year. I finally ordered one a few months ago, but it has been on backorder (I should've just ordered a zen habitats instead of trying to save some $). He was a very very angry boy when I first got him and had a black beard 24/7 and would hiss at you every time you walk by his enclosure. He now gets large salads and super worms and dubia roaches and all sorts of yummy bugs. He also is super stunted, missing a few toes and the end of his tail, he had really clogged pores that we have been working on,and he has mbd. He has definitely gotten a lot better and tolerates handling and even lets kids pet him and learn about him. He is my baby and I find so much joy in owning him. The only down side of adopting an adult, is you get less time with them. I missed out on 6 years of my beardies life, but I'm definitely thankful for every second I've gotten to spend with him. I definitely think I will always need to have a beardy in my life. They are such special animals!

    I got my beardie as a 2 year old after her previous owner moved to a place that did not allow pets. I really wanted a beardie by knew that a hatchling would be too much work for me, so went with an adult who needed a new home. She's definitely had a quality of life upgrade since moving in with me - her previous owner kept her in a 40 gal, she's now in a 4x2x2, is getting a better diet, and I had her treated for the parasites she had from eating wild-caught bugs at her previous home. Her previous family had young kids and is very gentle and was clearly handled quite a bit by the kids

    I got my beardie on Kijiji for $150 CAD, including the enclosure and supplies. He’s so tame, and never bobs or bites and rarely gets angry. He loves cuddles and going on walks when it’s warm.
    If I had bought a baby, it would have been around $150-250 CAD for just the dragon and at least $300 for the supplies. Plus, the baby wouldn’t have been hand tamed and I would be supporting breeders instead of rescues/people going through hard times.

    My beardie was gotten from a breeder (as all reptiles in australia are). Rescues do exist but due to the extensive licensing of reptiles here there are far less impulse purchases in general and thus, less needing mass rehoming.
    When the breeder asked if there were traits I was looking for I just answered 'one that will like me' and he chuckled to himself a bit before selecting Kevin from one of the upper branches.
    If his goal was to match a noob keeper with a chill boi he definitely succeeded! I joke his beard is broken since he's never ever puffed up or gone dark ever. He just judges from my shoulder or snugs into my chin.

    I've never been a fan of the "adopt don't shop" mentality (and I know you dealt with that too getting Kiba) but I do make an exception for the reptile species that are...I'm reluctant to say overbred, but overbred lol. Beardies, ball pythons, leos, boas, etc. They're all produced in much greater numbers than there are people willing and able to properly care for them. With cats and dogs, there's a very real argument to be made for buying a puppy/kitten - wanting them to perform certain tasks, exposing them to specific aspects of your lifestyle that would be harder for an adult to adjust to, wanting to train them your own way and help mold their behavior from the start. With reptiles, those usually aren't factors. So unless you want a specific morph (which I am also completely okay with), or you want the experience of raising a baby (which is also extremely valuable to have if you plan on keeping long-term or multiple animals), there's really not a lot of downside to adopting instead
    Again to clarify, I have no issue whatsoever with people who do breed or buy any of these species - I have done it and there are still more I plan to in the future - but if I don't care about genetics and just want a cool pet, I definitely prefer adoption

    • @SobrietyandSolace
      @SobrietyandSolace 2 роки тому

      You should still adopt a dog or cat. They are overbred, horribly deformed from overbreeding and selectively breeding for particular deformities and the only reasons you have for buying a ay are so they can be bent to your will, purely personal convenience on your part. That's inexcusable when s many of the get put down every day.

    I rescued my beardie when he was 8 months old from an abusive home. His previous owner was mentally ill and would throw him, squeeze him, and would leave him without food or water for weeks. When he came to me, he was totally emaciated, had a kink in his tail due to MDB and lack of ever having UV lights, and was terrified of people. He would try to run away, and then attack me whenever I reached into his tank. Now, a year and a half later, he's my calmest reptile. He will climb out of his tank and up onto my bed to hang out with me, he's a healthy weight and doesn't have MDB anymore, AND he hasn't tried to bite me in almost a year now!

    I was ready and convinced I would get an adult beardie, but all those that were available for the months I was looking were special needs and I didn't feel ready for that. Then, serendipitously, I encountered Ray the small one of his clutch (not exactly a runt but slightly behind) and I fell in love. My God he grew huge compared to how small he was! He was as big as a finger and is now a full size pancake!
    He also snuggles, follows me around the home, responds to some commands (most of the time) and is all around a lovely guy. I'm glad we found each other, but giving all the stress I had about his growing, I too recommend getting an adult.

    I got both as adults from re-home situations, because I really don't have the ability to keep upgrading enclosures, upping the meal sizes, and just the small wigglyness of babies.
    So I got adults instead! Way less work, and they were already at a good handleable size too!
    The first one I got is really calm and really easy and enjoyable to handle, but the second one is scared of people and has an attitude, which I knew before picking him up. They are amazing and beautiful and I'm so happy I went with re-home adults instead of buying babies!

    I think people tend to underestimate the fact that with young animals you don't always know what they're going to be like when they grow up. And it's not just a question of how you're going to raise them. A cuddly baby might grow into an "independent" adult... although i don't know much about bearded dragons, maybe they're all cuddly lol. I'm speaking from what I know about parrots. People get young budgies because they tend to be more trusting and forgiving of mistakes. But once they mature all the charm goes out the window and hormonal hell breaks loose. And when the birds are proper adults, their personalities can be anything from a zen master to a jealous freak, and it's impossible to tell from looking at the chick's behavior. I also think that's another good reason to not keep single budgies. If you have more than one you can still tame them, it will take a little more time, but then the bird has more social connections in which to distribute their energy.
    Ok that's totally off topic, sorry! I love Norbert, he's got great eyes :D

    Hi have not watched you in while. I lost one of my rescued Beardies back in November I took it the veterinary several times I hand fit and everything. His previous own didn't take care of him right. I still have my other rescued Beardie Aurora. She doing great. Even without her front hand. She only has one good hand. It hard for her to climb. Adoption is always better

    love this, i always have believed if there are any available for adoption its better to do this than get a new/younger unless there's a specific reason ofc, i'd feel irresponsible buying new whilst one was there for adoption even if its not quite the colour i first imagined. btw Norbert looks fantastic and he either really likes you or maybe planning on eating your nose im not sure hehe

    I was considering a baby beardie when my husband got our adult beardie from a co-worker who was needing to re-home one. He is full grown, but we have never known his age. I named him Meatloaf (as he was a bit of a chunker when we first met him lol) . He is so sweet and attentive, and loves watching movies on the couch with me. I highly recommend adult beardies. Meatie is an absolute dream ❤️

    My local favourite pet store, does accept animals for re-homing. When I went to get my new baby rat to join the mischief I already have, they had an adult black male rat. The employees seemed fond of him. As I have female rats, I didn’t bring him home but he seemed really well behaved.

    So I'm new to this reptile hobby. About 10 months ago I got my first reptile which was a leopard gecko, and I ended up having the mindset that I want my first to be a rescue from PetSmart(they definitely aren't the best with their care for them but better than Petco so I wouldn't be as risky) but one day I ended up trying an unfamiliar place called pet supplies plus to see if their products are cheaper and potentially getting my gecko there. So I went to the reptile area, and btw, I love how they are set up with leopard geckos and other reptiles by themselves in their enclosure, so they already had my curiosity at that point. So I looked at the leopard gecko window, and all I see is this adorable baby gecko climb up its water dish and show itself it was so adorable and I knew it was destiny and I ended up not rescuing as that place knows what they're doing but I was fine with it. Well anyway the main reason why I prefer to get a baby reptile is that those are typically more available and I get to control how tame it is and I can build a "bond" better as it knows throughout its life it can trust me.

    This better be an in depth video because beardie's are *notoriously* neglected because inexperienced people impulse buy them and are overwhelmed by or ignorant of their specific care requirements and most of them on the secondhand market have problems like MBD, blocked femoral pores etc

    I am so so happy I came across your channel! I was very recently babysitting (for the 2nd time) a young adult (?)female Bearded Dragon. They saw hiw much I loved her (have always wanted one) and they now have little time for her, so they've asked if I would like to adopt her...which I screamed yes! Lol.
    So now I have a surprise baby I know little about, but am researching and learning every day. We are reasonably sure she's a she (we've named her Olive), but I'm terrified of her becoming egg bound any time in the future. I have a chronic illness and mental health issues so can only work about 2 days a week. This means I have plenty of time to spend with her, but limited budget. What can I do to help her not get egg bound??
    Sorry about the life story, just wanted to explain the situation 🙂

    I have 12 animals (2 fish, 5 lizards, 3 turtles, 1 tortoise, and a bird) most of them are rehomes I agree with adopting even though I never went through an actual agency or anything. I never planned on keeping a beardie then a friend called she found a little one outside of her apartment and once it was decided I was keeping her I was actually excited to have a young one (vets guess was 4 months in may so now she’s about a yr) all of my other pets were adults shes my one that I actually got as a baby but adults are awesome!!

    We got a rescue bearded dragon from a friend who couldn't afford to take care of the dragon anymore. It was only temporary at first but when we were taking better care of this dragon than the previous owner and even better than our friend who had the dragon. We wanted the dragon to not have to move around anymore and to be taken care of well, what we could provide, so we asked our friend if we could just..... Have her and our friend said yes. So we have a female bearded dragons named Genevieve. Gigi for short.

    I made the mistake of buying a baby beardie from Petco & she didn't make it. Even the vet I took her to told me I was doing everything perfectly & she still passed. My second beardie, whom I still have today, was about a year old when I first got her. I got her from a small local breeder & she was so much easier to take care of. She is now about 5 & she is my baby. I would also definitely recommend getting more of an adult.

    While I don't want a bearded dragon right now I do eventually and I will more then likely get an adult. I am currently looking for a cat for myself and people keep saying I should get a kitten but I would much rather get an adult from a shelter because not only are there a lot of them but they are harder to adopt out plus with how my work is right now it will be better for both me and the cat to get an adult. Plus with adult cats you know their personality with kittens it can change. A good example is my best friend's mom's cat who was super sweet kitten but when she became an adult turned into a demon cat who will hiss at you if you look at her sometimes.
