    Thank you for explaining the calcium sand issue! In Australia we are encouraged by breeders to use play sand, but it should be noted that this is very different to the play sand found overseas and is a rounded shape. - I have done personal photo comparisions with this stuff and other PetTubers in the states, our play sand is completely different. I'm with you on the paper towel stuff, but for a different reason - I've had my beardie on paper towel and on AU play sand (again don't use the play sand from the US, it's different) and I found her much more enriched by the play sand. In Australia we also feed Wood Roaches as a Beardie staple, which are much better than crickets for them, or mealworms - than can cause impaction due to chitin in their coating. So if you're in AU and can't find dubia roaches - buy some wood roaches (or woodies)! I will eventually do an Aussie video on all of this! Thanks for the Video! Animalogic is great too - I've been watching her forever, she's an amazing artist!

    You should do a video ranking the time/effort each of your animals require on a daily basis, which ones are the most demanding? which ones aren't? etc. (this wouldn't deter me from any animal, I'm not looking to get any right now but I'm just curious lol)

      @WannonCreekWildlife 5 років тому +7

      James Gladman I hear this a lot, generally on social media from people over seas.
      I personally live in the natural range of the Eastern Bearded Dragon, and about 1.5hours drive away from where we start fining central beardies (the ones common as pets world wide) and loose sandy soil interspersed with rocky outcrops of open bushland makes up the vast majority of their habitat

    • @Emzotic
      @Emzotic  5 років тому +12

      Wicked Wildlife I saw wild Beardies on that gorgeous natural red sand you have in the outback. I was struck by just how dark the wild beardies are! I got close to one which was on a stump in a camels paddock, and it was amazing to see how fast it was running over the sand! Much faster than any beardie I’ve seen in captivity!!

    Hello Emzotic!! I was watching this video with my beardie, sandstorm, and I am so grateful. I had been using calcium sand at the time, and I immediately switched to the sand mat. He has been doing better ever since, so thank you so much!!!

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 5 років тому

      Sand mats aren’t a good substrate.
      Paper towel, non-adhesive shelf liner, or textured tile are all good solids. It’s best to offer digging enrichment with reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive substrate. You could do full loose, half and half, or full solid with a dig box

  • @ninvusoogoar6098
    @ninvusoogoar6098 4 роки тому +2

    for a substrate, i use a nonporous mat in my 4x2x2 enclosure that also has little grooves that are slightly elevated so he has the ability to grip it while he moves around. i 100% recommend using a mat like that because it make's cleaning a breeze! i just go outside and use the hot water hose and clean any poops ive missed if i am at work which also allows me to sanitize everything.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 4 роки тому

      I strongly recommend switching to soil, or half soil half textured tile. Soil gives them digging enrichment, which is extremely beneficial for them.

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 4 роки тому

      Keep in mind that the bare minimum for an adult bearded dragon is 75 gallons, and bigger is better. Tile is a great solid option (as long as it’s textured and not too slippery) but it’s best to offer digging enrichment with reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive substrate. Half tile half soil is a good option.

    We have regular playground sand that was baked to kill germs, but we only have it on the hot basking area. We use tiles on everywhere else. We don't feed him on the sand to help him not eat it, and we haven't had him deal with impaction or eat the sand. We have had him get constipated, but washing him helped. Sand wasn't the problem tho.

    Hi Em, I enjoyed the video I just have a few opinions which you probably won't see but hopefully someone out there will.
    I am SO glad you addressed that a 40 gallon is not big enough for a healthy adult dragon!!
    I know you recommended using a UVB tube, however in the video you showed a bulb and as someone who works with bearded dragons and their owners, i see many people confused over UVB/UVA, what the difference is etc.
    Regarding the substrate and impaction, I wish you had mentioned that impaction is 100% caused by husbandry problems, improper heat, hydration and UVB makes them unable to digest food they normally could, and in my years, and my bosses (Best Australian reptile vet) career we have seen impaction from Paper towel and food items only.
    Paper towel, newspaper, carpet etc are awful substrates! I have seen many bearded dragons, and other species, ingest the paper towel and die due to being unable to digest that unatural substrate. They also harbor bacteria hugely, same with a sand mat, when your dragon poo's how are you going to clean it properly? Unless you are fully replacing it weekly, I find it very unhygenic.
    For diet, a variety is best, not just dubia and locusts, things like earthworms, silkworms, BSFL, crickets, roaches, snails, there are soooo many different options dragons can eat.
    Another thing is the Calcium with D3, you should not use this if your UVB is a brand that also produces D3 already as your dragon can have too much of it and get very sick!!
    Also bearded dragons skin is waterproof, so saying it helps them to shed is a myth unless the skin has already lifted and started to shed it won't help. Also saying bearded dragons can get MBD from not enough calcium is true, but they can also get MBD from too much calcium or the wrong UVB.
    Also Bearded Dragon Owners is one of the WORST WORST WORST Facebook groups ever!! I was kicked due to just posting a photo of my dragon on a soil/sand mix because apparently it is unsafe and against their rules to have a dragon on loose NATURAL substrate...
    Check out Bearded Dragon Network instead which has almost 30K members and they promote educational, vet approved and researched husbandry. No "blankets and pillows and doll beds".

  • @greekfire2012
    @greekfire2012 5 років тому +1

    3 small things to mention.
    1. If your heat is hot enough for your beardie you wont have issues with sand but I definitely agree that it isnt the best thing for them especially young or juvenile beardeds.
    2. Research has been done and shows that red lights can make a bearded dragon go blind since they can see the red light plus they dont need night heat being a desert species anyways.
    3. Never feed mealworms to an adult bearded dragon. Ever. Petsmart was sued for telling someone to feed their bearded mealworms. That beardie died because the mealworm chewed through its stomach. Superworms are ok because they are big enough that beardeds have to chew them up really well.
    Otherwise I love this video. Very educational and informative.

I have a rescue crested and same thing, setting up his vivarium and watching his personality develop is such an awesome feeling. I get frustrated when I see people go overboard with the, "They aren't social creatures, don't handle them, and if you do only for a few minutes a day," yada, yada, yada. While this is true for some reptiles, mine personally would be SO pissed if I didnt let them out to explore at least once a day.
