Folk singers of the mid-60's had such a warm, mystical quality to them with their lyrics and mannerisms. Seeing them on camera expressing their words from the heart is a magical experience i think every music fan should witness.

He seems to have been almost forgotten, and that's not a good thing. He had a few songs, like this one, that are as good as it gets. I am not someone who gets nostalgic much, but this one (and Catch the Wind) gets me, and I was very young when this was recorded.
There's a youtube video somewhere of Donovan visiting London i think, a few years ago, setting up on the street and playing for awhile, as the crowds swirl around him obviously unaware of his legacy and his genius. Only a handful paid attention. Maybe that's the world for you.
Back in the '60s, my best friend and I sang this song at get-togethers, parties, etc. People loved it. We only sang 6 segments though. Yellow, blue, green, mellow, freedom, yellow again. I'll soon be 77 Y.O., and I still remember all the lyrics, and the feelings we had about things then. The 60's were a wonderful yet STRANGE decade filled with love, violence, rage, war, insanity, hope, beauty, and then love again. This song is an example of the beauty of the '60s.
He’s my absolutely favourite singer/song writer. I have all his works on my iPad. I actually saw him in person in a bar in Toronto when I was in my late 30’s. Bought Hurdy Gurdy Man as soon as I heard him on the radio. I was 14 years old then. I’m a grandma now. Both my kids and eldest grandchild are fans too! 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦
I remember going to the Isle of Wight festival and when it poured with rain, none of the groups would perform until it stopped. Up stepped this young man with just an acoustic guitar and harmonia and had the massive crowd enthralled for ages. Ah, the simplicity of my youth
He is from Scotland, so is no stranger to rain and Glaswegians arn't allowed to show fear, even when they are shitting themselves at the prospect of being electrocuted by wet PA equipment.
I was 18 when Donovan sang these songs, and they're still beautiful to me at 76! He and others were what got me started on a lifetime of playing guitar, not quite professionally but for a lifetime of sheer joy when it went well! Don't be afraid to try it!
Songs we went walking to school with, songs we ate our food to, songs that, at 65, I still remember the words to. These guys will always be remembered for influencing the way we all are today. Thanks for the wonderful memories.
Reminds me of summers, every weekend someone in the family would stop by. We had a fire pit in the front yard, everyone would sit and listen, someone always had a guitar, so many great songs.

What a blessing this is to hear these two! A young Donovan, who was the guide to me to folk music in my young teen-years. I wasn't then familiar with Pete Seeger, but soon enough I got to know him along with Bob Dylan. That was truly a time hope and future dreams of love, peace and understanding. With Pete Seeger, who you say wasn’t very well known, butau contraire, my friend, Pete Seeger was a very well-known & beloved folk singer along with Peter, Paul & Mary, the New Christy Minstrels, Joan Baez & others around the same time. Donovan was an Irish young man known as a friend of Pete Seeger, I believe, & first time I’d heard him. He was also at Woodstock & got more popular soon after that. I had about 4 of his albums. My mom had gotten me liking other folk singers as a youngster, and I just continued to appreciate folk singers like Donovan more than the “pop” singers of that time, like Elvis, Johnny Mathis, Sammy Davis Jr, John Davidson, Frankie Avalon, Dean Martin & Frank Sinatra, to name a few. Then after Woodstock, I discovered EVERYONE! Like The Rolling Stones, Dave Clark 5, Herb Alpert & the Tiajuana Brass, The Bee Gees, Janis Joplin, The Beatles, The Animals, Beach Boys, Cream, Linda Ronstandt, Herman’s Hermits, The Mamas & the Papas, and just so many new people & bands! It was an incredible era, and I remember it as the best time of my entire life! It was LOVE, LOVE, LOVE & PEACE! So glad I got the chance to live then!
My uncle used to sing this song with his guitar. I have lost him when he was only 35. So this will never get old for me. "That's the time" and time is relative, as you may know.
One is struck by how Seeger serves the song. His harmonies and so light, so complimentary, his playing so understated. Everyone has an ego, but these guys subsumed that ego into the pursuit of something greater.
there is a lot to love about Pete. He made sure the family of the man who wrote 'the lion sleeps tonight got the royalties he was never paid during his lifetime. that song made so much money for so many others but the original artist was not really credited or paid for his work. Such is the music 'business'. But Pete is a real man. He had many of the best artists on his tv show "Rainbow Quest".

You might want to consider that Seeger played folk and protest songs more than two decades before the „60’s“, his influence probably was the greatest in the years leading up to WWII… or in short: he, by age and history, definitely wasn’t of the 60‘s generation, unlike Donovan who decidedly was.
Indeed. It only came out much later that he was born with three testicles, and had to bear that burden his whole life. Courageous, indeed. You'll notice he leans slightly to the left even when sitting, as that's where the third one pulled him down a bit. A very courageous individual.
Pete Seeger was such a nourishing musician Donovan had to tell him to take the lead because Pete was enjoying this experience of playing a great song with a young musician that he hadn't even considered stealing the limelight for even a few bars. They say people die twice: the time they stop breathing and the last time someone speaks their name. I just want Pete to know that I think of him often and if I ever have kids I will tell them about Pete and play them his songs just as often. If I can help it he only has to die once.

An old folk tune "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair" that he simply changed to "yellow is" and added a few dumb but pretty lyrics to a much more substantial song. He made a mint from it, in those days, before copyright laws, but it is NOT HIS SONG. Just Google it or Wikipedia it.

Spent a few weeks in70s with the man in Newquay. Quite by accident. What a man .
He grabs Americana here so superbly. He really had a grasp on alternative county before it existed.
I believe American country music actually comes from the same UK traditions Donovan is drawing from. American folk comes from immigrants from the UK who mostly settled in Appalachia. 🙂

An old folk tune "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair" that he simply changed to "yellow is" and added a few dumb but pretty lyrics to a much more substantial song. He made a mint from it, in those days, before copyright laws, but it is NOT HIS SONG. Just Google it or Wikipedia it.

this is what I first remember from the latter 60s....thank you....at 70, I continue to enjoy Donovan and more current artists, though not many in the latter collective
The young man, early. Simple, one instrument, one voice, one very nuanced multiple-meaning message. Great in it's purity; Dylan, too, and Joan Baez simple guitar and solo voice. An era, fleeting, that he was among those making and hurtling into and through and . . . .
Donovan had such a cute, young face. He never seemed to grow up and out of adolescence.

Had the pleasure of seeing him play at the Savoy in Limerick in the very early 70s. I remember that it was a magical concert.
