It's hard to place Donovan in the sphere of popular music without talking about Bob Dylan. They're both out of the Woody Guthrie school of folk activism. You can include Don MacLean in there if you want. But Donovan had a bit more of the love bead 1960s caste in his style from the others which made him one of the icons of the period.

What a lovely interview. It's actually rare to see Don that relaxed, and talking about such an interesting range of stuff. I've loved his music from the beginning, but, bless him, he can be a bit of a poser and very self-promotional in interviews.
Donovan lived on St Vincent Street at the same time Billy Connolly lived on Dover Street, the two are parallel and it’s possible if they were close together that they knew each other.
I love Donovan he’s a beatnik/hippie legend, pure soul and musical genius overall and completely overlooked. Ignorant fools compare him to Dylan but In my opinion it’s comparing apples to oranges Donovan’s a psychedelic legend where as bob is a folk legend so the comparison wears thin

The "protestant side with the celts and the Hairy Legs!" AHhaha. Just today my mind quoted the "I want you to cheer like protestants" from the Quiet man film, didnt even make sense. I thought ah, a protestant shame I got someones paint bottles on my brothers floor tom he left behind (cautiously) but still.
He deserves to be cherished forever. This should have more than 8,600 views undoubtedly. Donovan bought his first guitar for 2.10 pounds pshhh.
Kilts
I got mine for 8 quid in Glasgow, a guy that worked for the cleansing department, emptying houses, sold me it, 8 quid gets you a deal of hash :-)
Another great band from around Hatfield/St Albans - The Zombies
....did you know this is the guy who tried to teach Paul how to play guitar....but he couldn't because Paul couldn't sit down...but he still wrote blackbird out of gratitude...thanks Donny
He was in Nashville during sisters. I was in Nashville in 86 lived in Brentwood mansion without no furniture. We had Jerry reeds old limousine. There was small scene in Nashville nobody looked like us . There wasn’t a lot in Nashville even in 80s. I heard everything changed in 90s. I can’t imagine Nashville during sixties. Grand ol oprea was like cult
I am Military dependent but I sang Donovan cannot recall I knew a guy that would jump a train from.TX to Cali he got bored
@@dustybroke597 Universal Soldier's a big one though
Donovan was largely fixed Dylan was a progressive artist.
@@alexbowman7582 That’s a great explanation, I never thought of it that way. To me Donovan’s songs didn’t have any depth, Dylan is probably bottomless.
@@timwhitmore7 Universal Soldier was a hit for Donovan, but it’s not his song. Written and first recorded by Buffy Sainte Marie - another bright shining star!
@@alexbowman7582 Donovan's music evolved tremendously over his career.
Damn, we was quite the looker 😍
"Cool in the Kaftan, love and peace man"
Donovan has the ability to peck out the bad notes. He conceptualized trance for all of the beet nicks.
What a lovely interview. It's actually rare to see Don that relaxed, and talking about such an interesting range of stuff. I've loved his music from the beginning, but, bless him, he can be a bit of a poser and very self-promotional in interviews.
The real Frodo.
💜
You're not Dylan you're DONAVAN Yeah!!!
Donovan lived on St Vincent Street at the same time Billy Connolly lived on Dover Street, the two are parallel and it’s possible if they were close together that they knew each other.
Greetings from Clan Johnston in the USA!
Overlooked? He was a global superstar in the 1960s and 1970s. He sold millions of records, and sold out concerts all over the world.
Yes but compared to his contemporaries his legacy isn’t even close
Although I love "Catch The Wind" I am glad he got away from the Dylan sound and developed his own sound and style, Brilliant song writer.
donovan is awesome he could rock and do medieval songs just like led zeppelin lol he made billion dollar babies one of alice cooper's best songs
Jimmy Page wanted Donovan to join Led Zeppelin when the lineup was going to be Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck on guitars, John Entwhistle on bass, Keith Moon on drums and Steve Winwood on keyboards,
@@kencoakley3959 Woooff! as they say in Glasgow, or the football commentators at least when there's a really exciting effort!
What a line-up that would have been!
1982!
jai guru dev❤️
‘Scotland is the last wilderness of Europe’
I just heard Donovan’s song written to David Crosby. When and why was it written.
Such an interesting unrated artist, I wonder where he is in 2020.
He lives in Ireland, I guess he likes having a quite life with his wife and children :)
@@OceanChild75 tm devotee
@@OceanChild75 Quite rightly!
He lives in Ireland, as does BA, because they don’t have to pay income tax
@@KenMacGregor Who is "BA"? Do you mean that Donovan lives in Ireland so that he won't be liable for the payment of income tax?
Vegetarian for years , even vegan a true hippie x
Robert Bridger veganism is entirely conceptual. It’s impossible not to eat insects. There’s a legal allowance in flour.
@@alexbowman7582 There are true vegetarians and vegans. I'm one of them.
Awesome! When was this?
The most gorgeous men in the world come from Glasgow ❤
I think I heard Donovan say he went to Southend. Did I correctly?
All this time I didn’t know he was Scottish
What year was this?
1980ish
Actually 1981
what year is this from?
1982
Have always loved Donavan's music. And yet never clocked that he was Scottish. Shame on me.
Don't worry, I'm Scottish and had to be told. Same with the Average white band!
He's bilingual really-English and Scots, but has been granted Cork citizenship I believe!
He is very assimilative of knowledge and culture, and articulate in the story-telling which sets up songwriting just fine!
