  • I have now owned my 1988 yamaha XT350 since spring and despite all the bad weather this summer, I have drove it some.
All the time felt like it was running a hot and possibly lean. Already replaced intake rubber boots and adjusted valves.
It has gradually started to be more difficult to start, so now was the time to tear into the carburetor!
A torne diaphragm on secondary carburetor and leaky old, hardened gaskets and orings made it leak. A bath in a ultrasonic cleaner got rid of most old dirt. Some more attention to a clogged up choke passage helped on the cold start issues.
I suspect the secondary carburetor never did much as long as I have owned the bike, because after replacing the diaphragm, the bike got a noticeable increase in performance.
    Good things!
