  • Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, which created ChatGPT, says that AI is a powerful tool that will streamline human work and quicken the pace of scientific advancement But ChatGPT has both enthralled and terrified us, and even some of AI’s pioneers are freaked out by it - by how quickly the technology has advanced. David Remnick talks with Altman, and with computer scientist Yoshua Bengio, who won the prestigious Turing Award for his work in 2018, but recently signed an open letter calling for a moratorium on some AI research until regulation can be implemented. The stakes, Bengio says, are high. “I believe there is a non-negligible risk that this kind of technology, in the short term, could disrupt democracies.”

It's great that you got a totally unbiased guest to have a nuanced cconversation.
It's like asking, "should America be selling weapon systems to brutal authoritarian states"? while interviewing a Raytheon executive.

The AI freakout is meant to cover up other things chaos capitalists are doing.

This is just a money grab and we’re all doing PR for OpenAI. The New Yorker should know better than basically asking Sam Altman “how awesome is this thing you’re trying to sell us?”

i think the real danger is that ai technology of this kind could have started to be developed in the 2000s, and now we are 17y behind figuring out how to integrate and manage it well. like, if nobody had ever bothered to design the iphone, and then all of a sudden 17y later we get the iphone 15 out of nowhere. thats my take.
    peace.

The best future for humanity after technological singularity is to create, together with general artificial intelligence, a virtual reality identical to the real world but unlimited and individual, where people are free to do anything imaginable while AGI protects us in the real world and expands throughout the universe to be as durable as possible

Im getting a feeling that copyrights are the main concern over A-I by corporations. Of course. If A-I is able to break the hoarding of information by humans it may turn an important page in human history.
