- Ellie Sachs and Max Cohn’s short film, “Proof of Concept,” offers a humorous meta-riff on the movie business and a tour of the Upper West Side.
The story behind the film: www.newyorker....
Still haven’t subscribed to The New Yorker on UA-cam ►►

Hi! We’re Max Cohn and Ellie Sachs - the writer/directors behind Proof of Concept. We’ll be looking out for your questions about the movie and look forward to answering some of them! Thanks for watching
Other than meaningless shots on a beach during golden hour, are their any other overused short film tropes you've noticed?
Does a short film need a whole 3 act structure, with complete character arcs that undergo a profound change?
What I am waiting for is a short film about the making-of of this film.
@@Eddi121212 Apparently not! :) But a clear beginning middle and end is always good. If you can also incorporate profound character arcs with a short runway, do it!
@@theovenengen4067 We do have a ton of BTS footage…
Now I need that feature film about how hard it is adopting a short film into a feature film
Brilliant. Very cool cast. Richard Kind; need more films with this wonderful actor in it.
I agree! He's so underrated!
I love Richard Kind! Thanks, New Yorker.
Great narrative and very inciteful. Love the writing and the actors too! Someone fund her!
And this my dear friends is why I love the New Yorker. These little shorts put outmacking humour out of the mundane. In the magazine, my favourite thing is the Shouts & Murmurs section: I even sent a piece to them, but it was declined.
It is a shame that the New Yorker laid off the entire film department in December 2023. They did it for "budget" reasons.
Great short! Richard Kind is the best.
This is so interesting! The fact that there was meta meta-ing of short films. Its a interesting point of view. I'm not one for watching a lot of movies but I do enjoy a short film, but its so rare to hear about them in general. Traditional Hollywood really does have a grasp on the film industry as a whole, doesn't it? Interesting. It's a little how I feel about the music industry and the ability to be your own version of creative while still under a label, let alone to be found by a label with so many talented people out there.
Super good and funny! I enjoyed every minute of it! Literally.
I love it! Awesome! You know who you should get? Richard Kind. He's compelling. That would definitely impact the production value.
Bravo! Well thought out and surreptitiously brilliant! Having attended many indie and "mainstream" film festivals, this would rate much higher than the vast majority. And, for myself, this leads to several other topics which could also be educationally humorous! Perfect casting too. And just out of curiosity, I didn't bother to study the credits, so could you tell me how many people it took to produce this gem?
So true it hurts. Nicely done.
This is so trippy.
I love it!!!
Well done and highly enjoyable.
Love it! Will share with our teenage son - an aspiring director.
Best of luck to him....and to you, as the mom of a comic😂
Wow what a concept for a conceptual short examining the importance of a short as a proof of concept for a feature about the financial and creative struggles of making a short.. on film, no less. Count me in.
Loved it! Needed a bit more staring at twigs for me. 😉 Thanks New Yorker.
As a short filmmaker, i felt this.
This is SO Funny! Great job!👏👏
This was great, on every level!!
Very cool concept, watched it on my Apple Vision Pro.
Absolutely brilliant.
This is fantastic!
A perfect short
Me encantó el corto 🤩🤩🤩🤩!!!. Saludos desde Colombia.
Love the Barney Greengrass feature haha
Wonderful, very funny and very true!
YOOO THATS FINN DETROLIO!!!!
OMG That's Finn from The Sopranos!
Short films are like the R&D of the film world. Yet you never see short films from the major players of today unless its a commercial. And the costs of making one are still quite high.
Hilarious 😂
When will you be moving into your experimental phase? Great short!
Now that... was meta ;)
I dig this.
What was the actual budget?
Probably around 2 million
😂
Yes!!
Artist Marcel Duchamp talked of "fighting the religion of art". What is being shown here is "the language of the cult of films". It is this kind of thinking that is bringing about the demise of film narrative as an artform, leaving the door open to AI content replacing "art". Movies were the Industrial Age and we're now in the Information Age. Time to adapt, which the last actor's strike failed to address.
A short film within a short film about short film. 😳 Take that Christopher Nolan.
and i was able to make out every line of dialogue, too! didn't even need subtitles.
💖💖💖💖
1:04 - He seems to REALLY want a Gaffer.
Did you do it for 7?
good job
hilarious, delightful, inventive!
cute, loved it
Pretty sure Chloe is a huge fan of Hong Sang-soo
Funny & all too real. 🎬 Those film festival entry fees are SOMETHING ELSE. A cash cow for those own & run the festivals.
Richard Kind = national treasure
Oh, the irony…. I can’t bear it. It’s like being stuck in an el vat or with Antonin Artaud, Jean Paul Sartre, and Anita Bryant. On Thorazine.
Haven't seen an answer to the driving question: What was the final cost of making this short?
When you can’t think of an actual idea, go meta!
Woderful!!!
Simple as ABC - Always Be Closing.
excellent film, but Uncle needs a mic!
very meta
What did u end up eating at Zabar's during the shoot?
The real proof of concept would be to do a short film on setting up a proof of concept film festival.
Will Janowitz 👌
I'm loving this, though I'm also very much the target audience for this
nah this was great, the hell
Bwahahahaaa! Great ending! Silly film!
Where's that toy store?
This film is like something Andy Kaufman would make, only his version wouldn't make any sense.
In this first comment I will explain how to be the first commenter.
👍❤️😎👏🎬🎥
This short film puts Inception to shame for its audacious self-actualization.
very funny
Great satire.
Loved it!
Here, have my Oscar:
