It sounds cheesy, but I actually had that thought somewhere in the back of my mind while making this - perhaps I can give these guys a few more years that the 2 - 3 they normally get by sharing them in a video...

Sunflower seeds are the seeds with the most oil and therefore fat for winter storage, and the hulls keep them from going rancid or fermenting like millet.
I kind of suspected it was something like that - whenever they would open a sunflower seed it was to eat it on the spot. But the ones they took to stash were always kept in the shell. Thanks for confirming!
At 8:25, that appears to be a dark-eyed junco! The one with the dark head is male and the others are possibly a female and juvenile, although hard to tell since their coloring is more drab. Great video. It was fantastic getting all those shots of the chipmunks bouncing along their trail. And the slo-mo tail leaps were really something!
You are correct - they are Juncos indeed! The one with the dark head is the male, the other two are juveniles. The mother wasn't there that time, but the whole family was around a lot during the time I was there, so I got to know them a bit. The parents would land first to check out the area, then they would call the young ones down from the tree and put seeds into their beaks. Thanks, DOOD! That was so amazing. We have tons of squirrels, but I don't know if we have chipmunks. The way they sat on your lap- so cute. I have a path like that in my yard- we feed raccoons & possums, occasional stray cats and assorted birds on the front porch. The path goes into the woods, where there are 3 dens that I can see. I'm tempted to put a little picket fence at the opening!
