We just moved into our newly built house on some land and there's a group of chipmunks that live in the immediate area. We have a couple bird feeders in the back yard and log piles near the front that the chipmunks hang out around and I've been going out there with seeds in my hand, they're especially skiddish its seems because before construction started, I doubt they've ever had humans anywhere near them, let alone walking up to them but I've been working on em slowly and have gotten a couple them to eat out of my hand a few times, they put their little front paws on my hand, super cool. So I'm gettin there. I don't care if they only like me because of food, it's worth it. They're so damn cute.
I have been feeding a mama chipmunk for about 2 days, the closest she has gotten is 2 feet, but I think this will help!! I have been feeding her millet and bird seeds, I have also been giving her water. One of her 2 babies almost came up to me but was too scared. I hope I can make friends with the babies too! I have named her Nectar, and she now responds to her names and my calls. I call her a good girl and talk to her so she gets used to me talking. She all tipped over a plastic water dish when she tried to get a drink of water the second time LOL. The humming bird: After only being with her for a few hours, a male humming bird circled two inches from my head and has been coming back. I will feed him sugar water, I have named him Hector, I think he has a nest near the chipmunk burrow
I am not just friends but also a family with a chipmunk. I found this poor little guy on the road today and I watched him get hit by a car. Thankfully it only hit his leg but I had to carry him (slowly) a quarter mile to get home, thankfully he is doing okay and he keeps getting better.
I did this last summer, but started with a trail of peanuts in the shells, which ended at the foot of my lawn chair. I put a large peanut bag down, next to my feet & this guy is right, they’re super greedy!! My lil chip got inside the bag several times, loading & unloading those giant shells into his pouches. I gave him some almonds today & he can’t stay away. 😂🙌🏽
I used a slightly different method. I started putting wildlife food in front of my feet, then on my feet, then in my hand. I had a garden glove on in case of things he may Cary, and not be too reliant on people since not all people are like me. And to keep them wild. I may do it gloveless next time. They fill their mouths, Ron back to their nest to store it, and run back to me. Adorable feeling their paws on your hand.
Good technique but for anyone trying this please be respectful of the animal. Not all chipmunks are the same. Some are very, very shy. Give them time and don't force a relationship on them. Keep in mind they are very busy trying to gather a lot of food that has to last them 6 MONTHS while they live underground. Be generous, please!
Absolutely correct. I can't believe that this guy achieved this relationship in just a couple of takes?! My chipmunks took forever to get close to me. And only a few times all summer did they eat out of my hand.
I get your point but you can feed them so they won't need to do that much you could just give them like a whole big pile of food and that's how they'll trust you more
I have been doing this religiously for a month and there have been three chipmunks coming up to me now I named them Theodore Alvin and Simon they’re always sitting on the mirror of my car waiting for me to go out to go to work to give them food before I go And they’re sitting at the parking space when I get back these chipmunks are so freaking smart and Adorable
I managed to befriend one when I first moved into this house- took a while- his tunnels were under my porch; eventually came up the steps and took nuts out of my hand. After about 3-4 days he would actually stand upright in front of my screen door & would screech, asking for more handouts, I'm guessing, so I did humour him when I could. He had a scar on his back, so I'm guessing he'd already been hurt by some other critter. Unfortunately, he suddenly disappeared; I'm guessing he became a victim of the neighbour's black cat, which was frequently in my yard (and crapping in my flower beds). Too bad. Trying to "tame" a new one but he's really not brave at all.
Give him time. It took me one year to befriend a black squirrel. He knew he was different and he was terrified of everyone. Eventually, when he realized he was special in a good way he came running. Midnight is the smartest, sweetest squirrel I have ever known and more important he knows he is loved.

What if the chipmunks starts depending on you what do you do
