Great video - I have walked this route many times and am shocked at the proliferation of empty shops all though the walkway.

Portage Place looks busier than what I've been hearing online. That's excellent, but I hear the mall is still empty.

Awesome vid. I moved away 10 years to California. It was so great to watch this and take a little trip back in time. Thanks !!

I miss the mall. Getting a noodle bowl at Edo, overhearing conversations... I even miss watching security drag overdosing bums out of the bathroom.

So familiar and so different now. A lot of the businesses have closed on the second level of Portage Place. The whole downtown has gone downhill. They're trying to revitalize the area with apartment buildings, but still no substantial grocery store that I know of. I heard theft was a problem with the one at The Bay.

Thanks for sharing this, I used to work in that Bay store 89-91 and was working there during the grand opening of Portage Place and it was 'the' mall! I had many shopping trips as a kid too to Eaton's centre with my Mom. I loved the candy store in the Eaton's basement!

You think you can do a walk in Polo Park mall next time? Like to see how it looks today.

I remember Polo Park when it was just a big strip mall. I think it was The Bay on one end, Sears on the other, and a bunch of small stores filling the gap. There was a bowling alley in a lower level, and a few offices above that.

It makes me nostalgic to see the Hudson Bay Company department store open and fully stocked. Eatons and HBC used to anchor the downtown, and were so busy it was hard to walk on the sidewalk between them because of the crowd of pedestrians. Eatons was knocked down to make room for the hockey arena, and the HBC store is now permanently closed :-(

@10:45 That's the statue of Timothy Eaton, founder of Eatons Department Store. It used to sit on the main floor of the store but now it's on the concourse inside the MTS Center, the building where the Winnipeg Jets hockey team plays. Notice how the statue's toes are shiny --- Winnipeggers rub them for good luck.

Nice knowledge of the place. Thanks, interesting. The bay though only had 2 floors running the 3rd floor where i went seemed to be unused and boarded up. I don’t know how they pay for rent of such a nice building unless of course they own it. Yes that statue’s foot is used up I remember noticing that and thinking maybe just because so many people walk through there. Cool.

@@silencenhikes6692 You're right about the HBC store --- the top floors were closed because, toward the end, business was so bad they didn't need the floorspace. The building opened in 1926 and was HBC's flagship store, selling everything from hearing aids to groceries, and had several restaurants including the "Georgian Room" on the 5th floor which sold formal sit-down meals, including very good roast beef. Later the Georgian Room was closed and it's space was used by the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.
There was another restaurant on the 6th floor that featured a mockup of a sternwheel paddle boat complete with full-size rotating stern paddles --- a lot of Winnipeggers have fond memories of the "Paddlewheel Restaurant", queueing up with trays in hand for good quality food. At one time the mockup paddlewheel turned in a pool of water, making the whole restaurant alive with the sound of splashing, and kids used to throw change in the pool like it was a big wishing well. Later they lowered the water level in the pool so the wheel turned uselessly, not even skimming the water. Finally they drained the pool and shut off the wheel entirely. And then it was gone. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/paddlewheel-restaurant-serves-its-last-meal-1.1321884

Paddlewheel restaurant, cool that was a great idea for the time. Cool stuff man. Lots more history in Winnipeg that’s for sure. Thanks will check out the link.

I worked at the old Free Press next door when this was being built and was very pleased with the skywalk idea. We all hoped that it would continue to extend to other parts but I guess not. A blessing in -50 though. Not hooking up Air Canada and Law Courts was a mistake. Hopefully the new skyscraper will be a part of this.

there are yes most of the university is connected by tunnels they've been there for decades, the students use them for classes in the winter!

julbball cool thanks did not know. I went there in the winter but just walked outside.

There's a network of tunnels between buildings at the University of Manitoba. These are mostly for steam pipes, but students use them too.
The University of Winnipeg's buildings are also joined together, but not underground --- instead they built a massive building between the existing buildings, so once you're on campus you hardly need to walk outside.

There are tunnels or connections between nearly all the buildings except some of the colleges.
