'86 Monte Carlo Part 1

- '86 Monte Carlo in for repaint. This one became a much lager job than expected. Stripped to bare metal because the existing paint was blowing off the original lacquer paint. Putting epoxy primer on before bodywork. On Part 2 I'll be lining up panels and doing some filler work. Then laying a few coats of polyester primer.

I'm ready for part 2 !
I was looking forward to part 2! love these g bodies.
Yea, me too.....
me too, was just looking for it
I like your work. I want to see more on this Monte. I have a 1986 El Camino I am doing a frame off, and I plan on stripping it down to bare metal. I didn't think this paint was lacquer but basecoat clear coat. I like to see the candy paint jobs and all of the front end air brushing. You are very clear in stating your process. Please post more.
awesome awesome video brother looking good
Thanks!
Quickly becoming one of my favorite UA-cam channels. Really like that you've gone to the camera mounted on your head/chest. Probably a really solid proof point to your clients about the quality of work as well.
I'm trying to improve with each vid. Thanks!
With quality paint jobs not being cheap, videos are a great way to show that you did it the right way without shortcuts. This paint should not only look great, it will last and protect the car, which is an often overlooked point. Yes paint is supposed to look good but it’s original purpose was to protect the metal. If it looks great but rusts out in a year, it was a shitty paint job, no matter how good it looked.
Can't wait to see how this one comes out. I love these cars!
I enjoy your videos so much I immediately went looking for the next one in this series - - only to realize you just put this one up!!!
Lol. Runnin pretty close to realtime.
Excellent instructions, the best period nobody is close
It’s always an pleasure watching your videos. 👍🏻
Excellent video and channel
Thank you Curry for putting out this good stuff.. Phillip Hall
As I mention before automotive painting is a skill set. It's true craftsmanship not everyone has and you sir do have that skill.
Excellent video with the skill to match🤠👍
Just anted to say you are an absolute beast and very very talented glad i found your channel
Top notch! Thanks for sharing!!
Great work man. Nice footage and editing.
The W400 did a nice job of laying down the sealer. I'm really looking forward to the next video.. Phillip Hall
The body was in good shape. No rot. Nice!
You know this is going to be 🔥🔥🔥
Dang, that old paint was like layers of a jawbreaker. Always wanted a G body
This is much, much better. For factory nitrocellulose, diluted epoxy primer may stick, but a lot of sun or oven is needed.
Hard to sell people on why it takes $8-12K to paint their 70s and 80s classic rides...... but you're putting it on "full" display. Excellent work
Thanks!
In my area of Virginia no shop is touching these old cars for less than 10K and that's usually just a sand, minimal bodywork, and repaint like was done previously on this Monte Carlo.
EPIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIC 😎👍 TYVM Boss 😎💯👍
Outstanding 🤘🏼
100% right about stripping with 36 fine grits get heat in panel and cause the panel to warp nice job
Lookin good👍🏻
I paint cars for a living also and our nightmare is our work peeling off like this. Aint seen razor strippin since the 90s doing delams for the Chevy dealership. Square S10s C10s little olds cars don't miss that shit work.
I need my Monte Carlo done
i use to have a 82 grand am t top i just put a 400 with a 400 turbo then i was moving had it on a trailer and some lady had to buy it with her insurance after she wiped out my 68 pu and trailer with car but i got a lot more then i had in them. sad part was it still had perfect paint from factory metallic blue looked real good on it no dings good interior i just had to finish dressing up under the hood
ps i all ways use a etching primer with a rust protection then body work but i use a very expensive primer it goes on very hard u can't scrap it off with a knife. i use sealer coat just before paint because sealer coat is not for protecting metal only a etching primer is for metal
Fianlly someone is showing people why we dont re-spray their whole car for 2k just cuz their buddy would do it for $500 😂
Yup!
Truth!!
@@paintbycurry1531 hi when part 2 filler over epoxy thanks
Got a 1984 SS model that's been sitting outside for years and the paint is cracking and splintering on the top surfaces. What's strange is there's no rust under the paint and it almost looks like a galvanized surface under the color. In contrast the floorboards and lower doors are really rotted out.
I just can't get enough of your videos man, they are all great. How much would it cost some one to do what you did in this video. I had a 73' Mach 1 around 20 years ago and a body shop quoted me 1k just to bring it down to metal again, is that about right?
1:50, hole Lee cow.
Kinda like using latex inside house paint over oil base paint. The latex will come off like tissue paper, in a day or two.
nice, but my pocket book would be puckering! :)
love ur vids u do great work where are u located
I learned a lot by watching this video.. I learned NOT to paint over lacquer paint. But what about lacquer primer? I have been told we can place base coat clear coat over lacquer primer without problems. I would like to know from 'your' experience.
I do know unused lacquer primer can be stored for use for another day and sands easily. Please let me know. Thanks, Phillip Hall
Wow . I've never seen car paint come off like a waterlogged deck.
I want to see the whole series. Where the rest of the videos made?
Newbie ....very good what you let panel with before paint / filler thanks
Wonder what year gm stopped using lacquer paint.
Anything new with this paint job? I like to see the end results
is that what they call chromeliean paint
also if you put to much hardner in your body filler it will eat a hole in your metal
awsome video
This is perfect I'm spraying a 87 now ,is it always necessary to spray primer sealer over 2K primer once it's cured and final sanded
Its best to do it. Your probably going to cut through your primer on the edges when sanding it so you need corrosion protection. Plus it will give you a uniform finish for your color and help make sure no sand scratches show.
@@paintbycurry1531 I appreciate it 👍🏼
I was wondering...whats the name of your shop( business)? I have a monte t-top to paint n I like your work especially on the black camero race car
Is there a part 2 ?
This looks like a shit show...... glad we have genuine people like you to fix this and bring it back!
I seem to get a lot of shit shows. Lol.
@@paintbycurry1531 As long as you are getting paid who cares! Lol.
That was a "My cousin can do it cheaper" paint job.
5:25, link to the air sander?
Where is your shop located
I’d love to have you do some work on my 71 camaro
How many hours do you reckon it took total to strip?
Might be a dumb question but what if you left it bare metal and polished with a finish… would it look nice and mimick a paint job?
When’s part II?
You cant apply filler directly onto omni within that 7 days? The epoxy I use(spi), Ill spray it out and 2 days later I can start spreading filler. Love your videos man!
Depending on the temps it probably would be but i don't take chances. I've always found it needs 5 days if its normally 85-90 degrees but that is dependent on film build. Right now its 80 in the day and 60's at night. Its gonna take a few days to prep and seal the other parts anyway and this ain't the only job going on. Lol
@@paintbycurry1531 right on man. I was just curious about the product.
Man love your work and attention to details! Are these cars customer cars or builds your doing?
Customers
@@paintbycurry1531 Id love to talk to you about doing a truck for me that Im building. 69 C10. Ive been trying to figure out your accent. What part of the country you in?
@@brdarley I believe he's only doing instructional videos, probably got all the work he wants, once you've achieved his level of Skill the demand comes easy.
@@kencraig7308 unfortunately that probably right. I have found that through the process of building my truck that it is hard to get anybody to even give you the time of day even if there is no budget what so ever for the work that you want done. Just want it to be right.
@@brdarley ya, it's a tough racket anymore to get quality work, there's actually a lot of great finishers out there willing to do the job, have you looked at southwest rod and customs on UA-cam? He goes by "My friend Pete" I'm sure if you throw enough money at him he could put you in line, and he can do show finish or even concourse quality, whatever you want, look him up, he's in Moab Utah and can even arrange to pick it up, extremely honest guy, too a fault I might add 🤣
How long before part 2 on the Monte ?
Curry how is the Monte Carlo coming along? Phillip Hall
Where are you located Paint By Curry thanks.
What ever happened with the color change on this one?
i've never heard of a red scotch brite. but i'm not a painter
You mentioned finding you on IG but there's no info anywhere on your YT "about me" or in video descriptions.
Sorry. I need to update that. IG is paint_by_curry
Where are you located . Wouldn't mind getting a paint job
Sure. You got $20K?
What happened to part 2? It`s been 3 months. I hope you are okay. Did something happen to you?
When the next video due showing filler work on top epoxy thanks
Still working on the car and videos. My videos are usually within a week or less of real time on these jobs. Monte on hold for another car that has to get done asap so be a few weeks.
@@jasoncurry8059 really looking farward to the “ key for filler stage “ you’ve already got the epoxy down and it’s sane as I’m doing and wanting to see how you do it next .... Hope I’m notified when you follow up vid from this one is ready to view thank you
Why do you cover up your pain gun
We use to take a razor blade to every red oxide primed car...
How can I get in touch with you?
Lowkey it looked nice being metal to me 😂😂
OMG, really, the finish fooled me, how does anyone that can finish that well forget the most important basic, adhesion 🤔
The problem with lacquer is everyone calls any clear paint lacquer. Do you actually mean nitrocellulose or acrylic or enamel
He's kinda hillbilly but he's skilled.
Lol. Thanks!
You're one talented badass painter but damn, you're slow as hell when it comes to part 2, 3, 4......... youtube and a business dont always gel the best but, 3 months later and no follow up
And I did show quality work on totle, turds, for 10 bucks an hour ! This is going to be 10-15-k in today's market! Nice work..
