This is exactly what I did. I couldn't find a set ANYWHERE. Not at walmart, target or even amazon. Shits hard to find despite reviewers informing you that you can find one online. Not really. The small flat-head method works like a gem. its perfect and so damn easy. I was shocked and then giddy as hell when I found my loophole LOL.
Absolute Legend!!! My Astro headset became way too loose during a trip recently and it was rotating even when on my head. This video helped with that screw. You’re a legend! Thanks!
You have genuinely saved my evening. My 5G receptor that I use instead of Wi-Fi stopped working this evening. I WFH so I was freaking out and the provider are closed until 8am tomorrow so can’t get any tech support. Managed to get those evil screws out after watching this video and take the sim out. Put it back in and now the Wi-Fi is back on!
I did this for a bolt on my van, using an impact driver. Didn't work at all, but it did break the post off so I could use a regular torx bit lol. Thanks!!!
My smallest flat screwdriver was 2.5 mm, which is a bit too large for T8 security screws on PS3... so I used the end of a broken retractable blade part from a utility knife, taped it around the middle and used a broken-off pointy part to screw. As a bonus, the other fully-non-sharp side is good for opening plastic casings like for batteries or, well, actual covers above the screws at the back of Playstation 3 Slim. Mad tool! XD Also used eyebrow pincers lmao.
What worked for me (finally) was using a Swiss Army knife’s main blade - the main pointy knife. Point the blade down, stick it in and twist until it catches in the torx screw. It will turn ever so slightly.
My old Dremel has 6 x T10 Torx screws. Just for fun they made one of them a security screw. Following your tip I got it out with a 2.5mm flathead. Thank you!
There is a generalised way of getting security screws out - and here's how. As long as the screw is available, you could grind a slot in its head with a Dremel or similar, and take the screw out with a regular, straight screwdriver. If security screws are down at the bottom of a long hole in the plastic body of a toaster, kettle, coffee machine or many other (typically) kitchen appliances you need to use a security bit (like the one shown in the corner at 0:37 in the video), and you can get sets of them from your hardware outlet (or online, of course), and they cover all sorts of security screws. The problem is that manufacturers put security screws at the bottom of a long plastic tube in the bodies of these appliances - and there's a good reason for that. It makes them really hard to get at can get at. The sets of security bits have hexagon shafts, and usually, they are small enough to fit down the plastic tubes in devices, but they come with a screwdriver handle which is far too fat to go down the hole, so you can drop the security bit down the hole, but you have to figure out some way of turning it. What you can do is to grind a slot in the back of the bit with a cutting disc in a Dremel, drop the security bit down the hole, and turn it with a screwdriver - but WATCH OUT!! Yesterday, my Morphy Richards espresso machine packed up, and when I tried that ruse, I found that the plastic hole was tapered, and the bit, which was narrow enough for the top of the hole, got jammed further down it, and now, I can't turn it, and I can't get it out - so Morphy Richards wins this round - but my next coffee machine will NOT be made by them. When I pay money for something that prevents me from fixing it when it goes bad, that pisses me right off!! If I had realised in advance that the hole might be tapered, I would have ground the corners off the hex shaft of the security bit to make it narrow enough to go down the hole.
You are seriously the man!!!! I've got a tamper resistant set of torx bits, but I ran into a screw one size smaller than anything I had. Been racking my brain for 2 days now...who knew the solution was so simple? I'd buy you a beer if I could. Hell...I'd splurge and buy you a 12 pack for this tip! A million thanks and a salute to you brother!
Great tip! I had a super small sized torx I needed to get out and didn't have a wrench that small. It wasn't a security type. I tried the small screwdriver and it fit, but it was just one of those little jewelry one's and the screws were too tight for it. So I tried an ALLEN WRENCH which I had that small size and that also worked! Just thought I'd mention that if anybody else is in a similar situation. I didn't try the bigger sizes but my little size worked fantastic. Thanks for the helpful video.
PSA: if you're trying to fix a xbox controller, the screws are small enough that you can just snap the center pin with a small flathead screwdriver like a 1.5 or so. Then you can use a regular torx T7 to remove the screws. Also try not to leave the snapped pins inside the controller, clean it well so no metal residue shorts out the board
I came across one of these torx security screws yesterday. I had tried using my regular torx before noticing piece in the middle. I had to use a small flat head screwdriver. It's worked fine.
YOU ARE THE MAAAAAAN!!!!! If anyone is having trouble using only the small flathead to back out the screw completely, it helped me a lot to "break" or "chisel down" the tower in the middle of the screw with the flathead...THEN go back in with a regular star bit. It doesn't require a lot of force, just be patient and you'll eventually get it to work. Good luck guys!
You are the best! I just bought a 22pcs set and realised it won't work. Eventually i broke the center o the screws with tinier screwrdrivers. Thanks man!
Thanks! Sadly the flathead couldn’t give enough torque to get the screw to turn, but what it DID do while I was trying to force it was snap the middle pins out so I could get a standard torx driver in there! Take that Dewalt!
Saved the day. My screw head was messy. Torx screwdriver was not working and just making it worst. This tip worked right away. It got in there and did the job. Thanks.
Thanks! I originally tried this but my screwdriver was just a bit too big. This inspired me to try again and I painstakingly succeeded by only using the corner of the flathead. Then when it was exposed enough I continued turning it with a pair of pliers.

Thanks for this great video. I wanted to add, I have the same screwdriver set you do, and I was able to use the flathead screwdriver tip to destroy those little center posts by prying sideways against them, so now I can use a standard T-20 bit.

I just used a Dremel with engraving bits to grind down the security post. You need a relatively steady hand and patience. You might also damage the torx head slightly but if you do a 2.5mm Allen wrench might work after; it worked for me. You can get a multi-piece security set for $20 and less too. lol

Works great, I'm trying to clean my PS4 and this saved me a lot of time. Thx mate.
Just tried it and it worked. This man should run for president

Bro 9 years later and this worked for me thank you so much
When you talk in the beginning it sounds like you're singing a song with the music in the background
Thank you wow spent 2hrs and more looking for a t8 with hole..here in Qatar just to open ps4...thank you
This was extremely useful. Thank you!
Thanks Dave. You helped me open up my UPS to replace the "non-replaceable" battery (According to Cyberpower!) without having to get special bits!
Thanks, this helped me access my washing machine.
Thank you dude. Saved my xbox one controller by showing me how to get them screws out to access my sticky D-pad with alcohol wipes.
Controller works well again.

you saved me from throwing my ps4 off my balcony!

Oops!
Thanks Dave just pulled up you video was trying to get a tamper proof torx machine screw out of a security camera enclosure . I even had a screw driver with a red cap on the end like you have in the video. Went 10 feet out the door and had that camera enclosure open in 30 seconds. Very nice hack just in time for me. I was sitting here thinking is that a T20 or T25, etc. Wish I could buy you a beer!
excellent, thanks ! that seems to work on the 5-star TR screws on my Lethaerman Wave (trying to add a pocket clip, dammit).
Keep on trucking ! (from France)
YEARS LATER AND THIS VIDEO HELPED ME THANK YOU🙏🙏🙏
Dem garage band loops doe
Thanks for posting this video. Your trick worked perfectly to remove the two torx security screws in my three decade old shop vac. Now, let's hope I can get it working again.
Screw these comments on the music! I loved it and provided a great mission impossible earworm while I got the damn coffee maker apart! Thanks mate! ~ba ba ba, ba ba da da damm....
I concur. The message is what's important. And it's going to be helpful regardless of the video quality and music.
Great post. Thanks.
Perfect! Tried Dave's trick and broke off the post - now my standard Torx screwdriver works. Problem solved!
If you make more videos invest in a tripod
Matthew lol
Matthew people call me tripod...do I need a tripod?
Thanks! I became disappointed when I was taking something apart and saw these screws since my dad doesn't have a torx security screwdriver (which is surprising considering he has SO MANY types of hand tools), but this helped!!
thanks i could now open my ps3
