normally I throw the bike in the air, then do a double backflip to land on the bike. it takes a little practise but does use the least energy and is also the quickest.
So many people taking the piss here, but really focusing on basics that most people take for granted is actually really important. Excellent breakdown. Not exhaustive, but a wonderful document. Thanks for taking the time for this!
I googled this coz I’ve not ridden since my bmx more than 25 years ago, bikes have changed so much. I was mounting very clumsy till this video reminded me of the pedal technique I used to use. I agree with you, seems basic but it’s a valuable video
I like the one best, where I almost lose my balance getting my leg up, then getting my pants stuck on the saddle while already starting to roll downhill with all my weight on the bars, coming up to an obstacle and bottoming out my fork before going over the bars with my pants still attached to my saddle before landing flat on my back in my underwear next to a busy street.
I m with you. Best method to mount a bike. I figured that's why cyclingpants are so tight, but i prefer to light up everybodies day and look halfway decent while doing so, over putting one of these dreadfull things on.
Yep . . . did that before (minus the falling backwards). . . in the middle of an intersection then just ran with it to the other side, didn't even look back. XD
I always had to rent a chopper and parachute on top of my bike, sometimes it's successful and sometimes i miss it so I'd have to redo it. Thank you for this video, it changed my life 🙏🏻😊
I am an old lady, taking up bicycling after many years, but as a kid and young woman I rode a great deal. I am not very stable until I get going, and would live to swing my leg over as I did years ago, but I can't. Thanks for the tutorial. I may try it after I work on my nerve.
You're an inspiration ❤. As a young woman who primarily uses a bike as transportation, I sometimes wonder if I could continue on with it well into old age.
I've been learning to get on a bike for years, and it turns out this tutorial has been around for 6 years. Tomorrow, I will try it and hope I can get on my 15 years old bike. Thanks, mate.
Thank you so much. I'm relearning how to ride after a decade, and my toes barely touch the ground. Also, my favorite is the step and swing. It's much easier than what I'd been doing.
TBH on the poll I selected the 70% method... But, thinking about it now... out on the trail - it depends a lot on the terrain i.e. uphill, flat, downhill, smooth, techy, gnarly, tight etc. Plus, it can be different if riding solo or with a group ^^ I'm thinking 70% the time I use the foot on & swing. The rest of the time, I'll use whatever works best given the situation.
I always used the standard, boring way of tilting the bike just slightly towards me for clearance (I have a high seat), then kicking my right foot up and over it. From there, standing somewhere between the pedals and the seat, I'll use my right foot to push the right pedal up if needed, then step on the pedal, sit down and start going. I've seen a lot of cool ways to get going, but was never able to pull them off.
I'm a beginner with probably less than 24 hours of riding under my belt and I use the "step over the top tube" method. Definitely need to learn the step and swing method, it's so smooth!
So I’m nearly 40 years old and haven’t ridden a bike in years since I got in a pretty bad BMX accident. I have been looking into getting into mountain biking but question my ability and fitness since it has been so long. Seeing what a true beginner rider looks like is giving me the confidence to get out on my local trails.
Thank you so much for this! I just started riding and was at Sedona bike fest last weekend. I felt like such a dork getting off and on. I will practice this move!
How do you do it without falling over though.... My pedal keeps moving around when I place my foot on it. I can't even scoot along the ground without losing balance.
I do the beginner thing or the swing one. Wouldn't call the beginner one unstable though, it gives you plenty of time to mounth the other foot, which is usefull especially when starting in the middle of going uphill. Jumping onto the saddle looks like it might hurt my balls eventually, so no thanks.
Seth. At 75 I am pretty conservative on mounting. I usually lean the bike toward me so I have reduced leg clearance and then roll the outboard petal up to 9 o’clock for a strong push off.
Watching this made me realize how awkward my mounting technique is. I do a hybrid of the first and last one where I swing my leg over the tube to clear it but land directly on the raised pedal push it down and then get the rest of my body up with the momentum of the movement. Gotta try some different techniques. Haven't ever noticed that.
As an absurdly tall person I can comfortably stand over any bicycle. But I do use "step and swing" when transitioning on and off the bike to use pedestrian crossings, just because it's more fluid that way.
As an elderly rider I find the easiest way is to hold the bike with the brakes on with the saddle slightly forward of me. Lift my leg realise the brakes and pull the bike back so I am over the top tube then take off as normal.
You dismount your front wheel, hang it on your back, start with a wheelie, and then when you have enough speed... roll your front wheel on the floor... and then catch it with your forks perfectly. That is called perfect mounting. That is how Mr. Colnago wanted us to mount our bikes.
I’m new to the riding game and I just want to say thank you for all of the informative videos! I recently visited a local bike shop thinking they were going to help me get more acquainted with my bike and answer a few basic questions I had. Rubber Soul Cycles in Fresno California has thee WORST customer service. Any who your videos have really helped me ride with confidence! All of your tips and tricks are extremely appreciated!
Thanks! I find this information really useful, I learned to ride my bike at my 30s, and by myself, I still have the saddle to low for me height, because I'm scared when trying to get on the bike with the right height. I'm gonna try the one that you said that the majority does.
Fantastic video on how to mount a bicycle. I've had my bike for 2 years but couldn't figure out how to get on it until now! Please make one about how to sit on a saddle and how to steer left and right next!
I am a one foot on the pedal, push forward like riding a scooter and swing the leg over the saddle guy. If I find a rock, log or high spot on the trail I will use it to sit on the bike then push off with a stroke of the pedal. Being short like Seth and riding full suspension bike there is a little extra until the rear shock sags. I also set my seat as high as I can for maximum leg extension so I need to compensate for these factors.
Mount Wilson in Altadena: Sam Merrill trail, Sunset Ridge, and El Prieto Canyon. You can do all three on the way down the mountain with great views, scary switchbacks, and crossing back and forth through a stream to cool off once you're down in the canyon. Lot's of fun!
Here in Mexico, the step'n'swing is usually referred to as "de panadero". A panadero is a baker, and some of them cruise around with a bike or trycicle with a huge basket of pastries and sell coffee and stuff. Those guys are hardcore, riding across cities multiple times a day on super heavy vehicles carrying a truckload of delicious pastries they're not allowed to eat xD Anyway, they all use that technique. I personally tend to do the first one you mentioned, as I usually get on the bike, set up strava or runtastic, put my phone in my backpack and then get going. It's just easier to sit on the bike while doing that than holding it or having to lean it on something and then get it back after starting the gps.
obviously the easiest way to mount a bike is to find its balance point then front flip onto the handlebars to get it going and then hop down onto the pedals and seat. (your welcome)
Fascinating! I don't use any of the methods you show. I stand beside my bike, on the left, possible tilting the bike towards me, and swing my leg over the back wheel so that I end up sitting on the saddle and my right foot hits the right pedal, then I take my lkeft foot off the ground, righting the bike if necessary, then out my left foot on the pedal and push off with the my right foot..
No one else will admit it, but I will. I am the LAST person to remount my bike...EVERY time. Slow as crap. My right hip is a little stiff from years of pounding golf balls, so that's always slowed me down, but I've never given it much thought. I'm going to have to try the "step and swing" method...or whatever the predominant method was anyway, and see if that helps. Maybe I'll be the only person who gets anything out of this, but that's fine. I dig it. I have an idea for a video while you're injured. "How to wash your bike at a spray car wash to get it clean after a muddy ride, without doing damage to it." I've heard conflicting reports from..."Yeah, I do it all the time, I'm just careful not to spray from a close distance, and not to spray directly into any critical components," to..."Never do that, ever." And this has come from long time shop owners, and mechanics, so I truly do wonder if it's a viable way to at least get your bike "mostly" clean while it's still on the rack after a ride, before everything has dried to a crisp.
I have hip and knee issues. I have to mount my bike by leaning it towards me and then swinging my leg over the rear wheel and then the saddle onto the pedal. Same when I dismount but opposite direction.
I do the one right before your favorite method. Where you lean the bike down to get your foot on the outside pedal, once your foot is on I can easily push off and get going :) just easy for me since I can't swing my legs high from my bulging disk in my back. But I still ride a bike daily to class 3 miles, and weekends go mountain bike on my diamondback hook (thanks to your vids I picked up a used one for $350)
I’ve been doing it all wrong. Your way looks like what I need to do. I’m going to teach my kids that way as well. I’m short as well so clearing top tubes has always been questionable. Best 2 minute video I’ve watched in a which.
i like the first method of bringing my leg over the top tube and getting going from a standing start. it gives me a moment to get my bearings before i start moving.
0:58 How do you keep the bike stable while you swing your leg around and get on the seat? When I try this I feel like I'm going to fall. Especially if I'm trying to get on the bike before a turn or a path with roots. Once I'm on the bike I'm stable, but I have a lot of trouble getting on
I am a "climb-over-the-top-tube" guy. I crashed so hard with the "step-and-swing" method when I learned biking as a kid I never dared to try it again. Will make it my standart method for MTBing though, because it really is better.
In the past, I would drop the bike to the side and hoist a leg over. I have been dealing with sciatica for over 10 years, and with the new found e bikes, I want to ride again. The difficulty was test riding bikes. I was trying to do stretching to be able to be a dog pissing on a fire-hydrant. I have limited mobility now because of the inactivity as well as added weight. I think with mounting the bike this way, I can test ride bikes now. Thank you for sharing something that seems simplistic.
Or with a toddlerseat mounted on the back....actually witnessed a good friend doing exactly that, 'cause he simply forgot his two year old daughter was sitting in it and he was in a hurry.
I am a commuter mostly and I actually do the dorky downtube thing most often. During winter nights there's so much stuff to get ready anyway. Helmet, face cover, gloves, jacket, lights etc. The easiest way to get all that done is to stand over the bike.
Lately, I like to mount my bike by laying next to it on the ground, staring up at the sky, and think about all the hours I've put into my videos so people can post comments that I sound like Ethan from h3h3.
I ride bmx, and there's a cool way to mount from the bike laying on the ground, while the bike is laying on the ground, put one foot on the exposed pedal and the other on the seat, with hand on handlebars, push down on the seat as to do a preload, and pull the bike up and mount. Probably the most difficult way to mount, but it is fun when pulled off
clips are the old style toe clips. saying clipless is least ambigous. Mountainbiker will get it when you say "clips" as opposed to flats but every other cyclists you will confuse
Goriaas No toe clips are toe clips, clipless is a stupid name that should be forgotten. Toeclipless would make more sense in the literal explanation, but (my generation at least) doesn’t call toe clips “clips”. Heck, you don’t even clip into toe clips. You flip the pedal then fricken slip in Slipless makes more sense than clipless
I’m 6’2” so stepping over the top tube is super easy for me. Even on a 29er, I feel I’ll trip on my big feet if I try to cross to step on the pedal and then swing my leg over. Especially on a trail with uneven ground
On smooth ground/pavement, step and swing. On rough terrain or a tight trail, I tilt the bike to me, put one foot on with the pedal high, then push with the other as I start to pedal.
Place foot on peddle when peddle is at it’s highest and push off at the same time swing your other leg over just in time to keep the momentum going, quickest way of riding off if every second counts. Not that I do this myself but the quickest way of taking off that I know of.
Hopefully it's not too high. That's not ideal for it to be super-high, unless, of course, you're a pro road biker. Then, you can have it three feet above your handlebars, lol.
Straddle, clip either foot, lift pedal and start with the clipped foot. I use this method always, as it is the only effective way I know to get started on singletrack hill.
Jumping on like this, especially on carbon and Aluminum frames can more than likely cause your frame to fatigue more prematurely. But I could be wrong.
normally I throw the bike in the air, then do a double backflip to land on the bike. it takes a little practise but does use the least energy and is also the quickest.

Try the step and swing technique on a tandem! Lets see how supremely that works...
Or with a toddlerseat mounted on the back....actually witnessed a good friend doing exactly that, 'cause he simply forgot his two year old daughter was sitting in it and he was in a hurry.
@@RhenusFilms well shit
@@daffakianandra147 😂😂😂😂
I am a commuter mostly and I actually do the dorky downtube thing most often. During winter nights there's so much stuff to get ready anyway. Helmet, face cover, gloves, jacket, lights etc. The easiest way to get all that done is to stand over the bike.
Oh so this is why the poll 🤣
Tomi Saaranen I know right I was wondering why he asked such a random question😂
Colbyruk 72 yeah that's what I thought also
Shit i wasnt part of it :(
Greetings from Ecuador. First off thanks for the great videos and tutorials.I do the first method as I am a beginner. Just got my bike a week ago.
Lately, I like to mount my bike by laying next to it on the ground, staring up at the sky, and think about all the hours I've put into my videos so people can post comments that I sound like Ethan from h3h3.
Shameless leech.
Abdelkader Bennaoum I know, right!? That guy has built a career off of sounding like me!
Well played..well played.
@MOHIT UDDIN I hope this was supposed to be ironic.
I ride bmx, and there's a cool way to mount from the bike laying on the ground, while the bike is laying on the ground, put one foot on the exposed pedal and the other on the seat, with hand on handlebars, push down on the seat as to do a preload, and pull the bike up and mount. Probably the most difficult way to mount, but it is fun when pulled off
dismount methods, dunno if the wheelie to butt method counts....
You mean simply going into a low gear and then just jumping off as you start the wheelie? If thats what you mean, i am always doing that
I use the various methods shown but the swing method is indeed my most used. This was a fun video!
Help, now I don’t how to get off
Just let go and fall…
I honestly haven't ever thought about it... Now I have to go out and check!
please make bike tech videos since you cant properly mtb because of your wrist
Foot on and swing at first, followed shortly after by manually pushing my seat down (dropper) and climbing back on the easy way.
Hmm Seth rides clips on the road bike, nice
You mean clipless...
ErebosGR you can call it both :)
clips are the old style toe clips.
saying clipless is least ambigous.
Mountainbiker will get it when you say "clips" as opposed to flats but every other cyclists you will confuse
Goriaas yeah you're right but where I'm from everyone calls them clips :))
Goriaas No
toe clips are toe clips, clipless is a stupid name that should be forgotten.
Toeclipless would make more sense in the literal explanation, but (my generation at least) doesn’t call toe clips “clips”.
Heck, you don’t even clip into toe clips.
You flip the pedal then fricken slip in
Slipless makes more sense than clipless
I’m 6’2” so stepping over the top tube is super easy for me. Even on a 29er, I feel I’ll trip on my big feet if I try to cross to step on the pedal and then swing my leg over. Especially on a trail with uneven ground
Ghost ride my bike, then run and jump onto it
LMAOOOO
yea i tried that but my balls didnt quite care for it to much
Y.S.M.2004 -MINECRAFT VLOGS AND MORE I do the same, Minecraft vlogs and more....
+Zach Zedstar oh yes finally a channel thats perfect for me.
On smooth ground/pavement, step and swing. On rough terrain or a tight trail, I tilt the bike to me, put one foot on with the pedal high, then push with the other as I start to pedal.
im honestly embarrassed to be here :L but I need to know =/
I hadn't rode in 40 yrs, yea it was a must view
Place foot on peddle when peddle is at it’s highest and push off at the same time swing your other leg over just in time to keep the momentum going, quickest way of riding off if every second counts.
Not that I do this myself but the quickest way of taking off that I know of.
I usually just jump onto my saddle on my xc bike.
I step over the top tube because I have a rear rack, and can't swing my leg over what I might have on the rack at the time.
Cant do that my Saddle of mountain bike is so high
Hopefully it's not too high. That's not ideal for it to be super-high, unless, of course, you're a pro road biker. Then, you can have it three feet above your handlebars, lol.
I like jumping on the bike, gets me hyped up.
Also I like the wheelie mount. That's the best.
I just lower the dropper on my mountain bike and hop on..
Straddle, clip either foot, lift pedal and start with the clipped foot. I use this method always, as it is the only effective way I know to get started on singletrack hill.
My method : puts bike onto back wheel jumps on continues riding in a wheelie
I take back my poll choice. Backwards hop over the handle bars. I can't believe you didn't cover this one!
I get someone to hold my bike then I get onto the roof of my house I do a triple back flip and land on my bike
It’s takes little to no energy
Jumping on like this, especially on carbon and Aluminum frames can more than likely cause your frame to fatigue more prematurely. But I could be wrong.
"How to get on a bike" WTF is this lol
Congrats on 600,000 subscribers!!!!
I learned wheelies, stoppies, and other small trials/bmx tricks from this channel when you still had about 250k been watching your videos for a while
I’ve thought about and mounted my bike in all of these ways in the past, now the push and swing is the only one I use.
