Hello Trena. I have a similar professional background in the fabrication and finishing of wood working as yourself. And, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your channel. I can relate to most every type of repair that you do in your videos. I never had formal training in the craft or the privilege of having a mentor. I learned on-the-job and sometimes by trial-and-error. I do not have your extensive and in-depth knowledge base of the trade. I love your narration and the clear explanations you offer while actually doing the work in real-time. It adds a whole new dimension to my learning and confidence building. Thank you for taking the time and putting in the effort to continue making your videos. I don't know if viewers of this type of content understand how much work goes into the planning, filming and editing of videos. You're also a business owner with a family to care for. I can only imagine just how busy you are, probably all of the time. I'm very grateful for your unique style of presentation and for making it available on this public platform.
Yes. Although it’s sad they’re no longer in the original home. 😢 I grew up in a craftsman bungalow that was gutted and renovated in the 70’s. Dark wood paneling thrown up everywhere. Including the 5 panel wood doors. So sad. Some renovations are necessary and add value but trends are never a good idea.
Excellent work! Easy in concept but I don't think your typical non-woodworking person realizes just how difficult a project like that is... and as always, you made it look easy. I'm impressed with your work.
The sudden, unexpected appearance of shop dog assures that the quality of the job will be top notch. Your solutions to knotty issues are always amazing.
For your sneezes bless you, love that your giving life to 2pieces of furniture which would normally be fire wood. Thankfully the owners could see what gems they had. 🤗👍
I got confused and thought you were going to combine them into a single bookcase, I'm disappointed that I didn't get to see you make them into a single piece. However, I love the work you did and am always happy after watching your restore pieces. I'm a hardcore antiquarian, so I can't watch some restoration/furniture repair channels because I know that they're ruining a piece of history. You always do "sympathetic restorations" which are saving these pieces for future generations. Thank you for always doing such a good job on them. I wish you lived in florida instead of Canada as I have an old 1880s folding dining table that needs a new board added in the top and the top reglued. Anyway thank you again for another great video! :)
Hello Trena, I’m impressed again with the planning and execution of your work. In this case you remanufactured a custom piece and gave it many more years of use. It’s a beauty !
Your descriptions of what you're going to do and why is beyond professional with the possible exception of " I'm gonna squish it back together" Another spectacular job .....
I love the fact you and your customer are reusing these pieces. rather than toss them on the wood pile!. I love to "recycle and bring back to life any old pieces like that. not only does it keep the piece "alive" it shows respect for the original builder and prolongs his or her craftsmanship. thanks for bringing us along. great work/skill/craftsmanship Trena! God speed. ECF
It makes me absolutely ILL that someone destroyed an original craftsman feature by removing these, but I’m at least grateful they’re surviving in some manner this way. Great job!!
Most people would just throw them away but they will still be around what we use today nice repairs on them both customer will be very pleased. Take care 😀👍👍👍👍
Beautiful work! You're right about the great color of the wood. Whether it was planned or luck, that was some great grain matching on the the side piece. Well done!
Way to go, Trena ...! These bookcases look wonderful now ... It's So satisfying for us viewers to watch a truly inspired professional @ work. I look forward to every post! 💕
Furniture maker and trim carpenter have a different definition of square for sure, nice job introducing the two. My dad (86) was a machinest for most of his life. I framed in highschool. Some of the conversations would boggle the mind
Trena, WOW!! Exceptional work! You are the best! When I see that you've posted another video of your fantastic work I immediately open it!! Thanks so much for sharing! I continue to learn so much from watching!!
What a good idea to repurpose them like that. Most people would have just thrown them out but now they will last in the family for many a generation! They look fantastic. Nothing better than old oak to work with. It’s such a durable wood that lasts and lasts.
Those bookcases came out awesome, a lot of for planning in projects especially when working with limited resources such the old pieces your client furnished you. Once again the cases came out awesome, thanks for sharing your project, appreciate it.
So much beautiful oak wood in the Craftsmen style homes, glad it is being repurposed. Living in Cincinnati, home of Rookwood pottery, I also really love the Rookwood fireplaces in those homes. An important part of history in North America that are well worth saving.
I've seen quite a number of built-ins tossed into the dumpster which could've had a second life (and quite a few which weren't salvageable as there was nothing free standing about them). So it was fun to watch the transformation, as well as the creation of the story that'll go along with them.
Beautiful work. Imagine those cabinets made out of old growth heart pine. That’s what I have in my house. They add so much character and beauty to my home I’m glad these were repurposed instead of being discarded. And when done by a master like you it’s even better.
Your treatment of the tops is great. From a small distance they look right (symmetrical) and it's only up close that you see the difference in end capping. Your delicate colouring is great. Thank you for sharing.
As always, it's great to watch you work. It is once again very well done. I hope to see many more works in your videos. All the best until soon. Greetings Maria
Good day Trena, I had two years classroom training in mill and cabinetry while in high school, but never took up the trade, instead I did a career in the military. But over the years I'd used that training to make and/or repair pieces of furniture and I must say at times it can be a good way to relieve stress. I built a commendation table a year ago, the top is hinged so it can be raised for drafting, drawing and painting or you can leave it down to use a small dining table. I have two of my brothers that work with wood, one turns bowls now that he is retired and the other is our younger brother, he works as a living make one-of-a-kind furniture for people and the one thing, we all know wood is something you can never master because no two pieces are the same just like a snowflake. I've enjoyed each and every one of your videos and look forward to the next one.
I love repurposing my father was a farmer and barrel builder in Europe and they saved everything and never changed when he imagrated to Canada. I have oak and walnut slabs a hundred years old never been worked from my dad not sure what I am gonna make yet . Thanks for sharing .
Trena: We're just going to trim this side down. Me: Man that's a huge undertaking! You certainly make these jobs look way easier than they really are. Love your work.
@JohnsFurnitureRepair thanks for the lesson. It's a shame the beautiful back won't be seen. You are very good at disguise...it's your super power...lol. I have a suggestion for the new shop. You should create a hidden room with a bookshelf opening! You could have a bit of quiet time in Trena's treasure room!
@@johnsfurniturerepair I say go for it! Head over to Matthew Peech woodworking...I've been learning a lot of great things from him. He builds new stuff not refurbishing like you. One of my favourites is this work bench that folds up to become a shelf!
My grandfather had two of those 'former' built in cases from his 20"s bungalow in Minneapolis. I had found them up in his attic and tried to convince him to finish the side that had been built in...but to no avail...the cases finally disappeared. ...sadly.
Another outstanding "save". 😄 I have the same philosophy in woodworking: Let the piece talk to you. In fact, I even do that on home construction, especially interior trim, even if I've drawn intricate plans. There is a natural balance of relational proportions - and then, sometimes, as it takes shape, you just have a better idea. Even when my initial solution differs, your choices are always rock solid and VERY smart - you have a GREAT eye. The color on this aged oak is one of my favorites. The patina has that aged warm golden glow that somehow . . . just FEELS good. Thanks for sharing another project. Cheers🤠
I agree about the aged color looking so very good.I have pieces of mission oak furniture that are so beautiful because they haven't ever needed refinished. They make the room feel cosy, and I do like those better than ones I have refinished, even though the refinished ones are "perfect" looking the older finished ones with the occasional dent or scratch - I often think I wonder if my Mom made that dent when she was little.
They came out way better than they had any right to! As you say, the small difference in ends will not be visible in practical use - they are after all, useful items not Fine WoodWorking! Awesome job.
Have to add that your color matching is mind blowing!!

Tha kyou so much for understanding. It’s always nice to hear from a fellow restorer.
I agree 100%!
Agree 💯 %!
Anybody can refinish a piece, you are a true craftsman. Superior work as always girl!
It is so beautiful to see pieces getting new life and purpose instead of just tossing them out.

Nice repurposing of some built in cabinets. Of course, as always, excellent workmanship.
😄👍 I like the asymmetric mitred pieces, wonderful stuff again.
Nice save of these old bookcases!
Another amazing job. Impressive. Thank you
Greetings from the BIG SKY.
I love to see pieces like this given a second life. Thank you for making them so caringly.
Wow! Beautiful work!
I really like that they are not perfectly the same as it gives them character and tells a story. Great results too.
Excellent job! Amazing color matching!❤
You did an awesome job on those 2 pieces.
very handsome & rich colored shelves
More wizardry from my favorite wizard. Beautifully done.
Stunners! The backs are so lovely that they would be wonderful to use as colonnades in a craftsman home!

Great salvage; honoring the oak tree!
Another nice job as we've come to expect. Unless you tell someone, no one will know they were originally mounted.
Like a wood surgeon!❤

I'd love seeing you toning the wood, please show it more!
Great project.
