Boy Meets World was not really a progressive show, and gayness was often a punchline. But something I thought was super interesting was how Eric was portrayed in the episode where he and Jack cross-dressed. Like, yeah, everyone else made fun of him for it, but Eric was super comfortable and in touch with his femininity and it was shown in a way that, even if it was a joke to everyone else, it wasn't to him. He took it really seriously and was shown to even have a sense of comfort in being able to honestly display his emotions.
Also the presentation in this video is 10/10 haha very great job

It wasn’t very progressive in nowadays standards, or even just excluding the progression in gender and sexuality. BUT! It did have a lot of progression in things like transracial relationships and 90’s culture.
I think the only reason the show DIDN’T make them gay is because if they did it probably wouldn’t be allowed to air on tv, so they tried to drop as many hints as possible without actually being too suspicious lol
@@fairie2653 yeah, I think the same. I mean, it's a disney channel tv show. Even now the creators have to fight to put gay relationships in their show(like in the owl house for example) so yeah, I'm pretty convinced that they couldn't make it more seriously gay in the 90's.

It doesn't make sense to measure standards from the past through today's lens when only a very few examples in media would be considered "progressive" in modern times (mostly due to censorship and extremely tough time of getting, for example, an openly gay relationship to be green lit for air). I think BMW did pretty well in being open minded with what they could, like the episode where Shawn cross dressed as a girl and Mr. Feeny said something along the lines of "come to me if you ever need to talk" hinting he was supportive if he was trans.
They had a healthier relationship than both Shawn and Corey and topanga and Corey

LITERALLY why would Eric have such a visceral, jealous reaction to Jack having a girlfriend?? Why is he ALWAYS jealous whenever Jack shows an interest in a girl? It's complete bullshit to try and say he's just competitive with Jack about picking up girls. He showed such concern for Jack's wellbeing. Why the hell did Mr. Feeney *solemnly* say that Eric knows deep down that Jack isn't just a roommate?
I love how confident he was in himself. He wasn’t afraid or ashamed to be himself. Definitely one of my favorite characters in the show.

I agree but I don’t really think Eric is cis because in What a Drag (7X11) Eric becomes Chantal and is really confident and continues to be Chantal even after they don’t have to hide anymore. I think in the '90s - it was more the norm to make these types of jokes. I doubt you would find this type of humor on a network tv show today. For Morgan to use liking boys as an insult to Eric is definitely not going into a family show.
