I love it, we started our "minimalist" journey about 4 years ago and have never looked back, we were able to buy a 57 acre farm and don't miss anything we have chosen to give up or life without, Love the more simple life!!!

I really. Think you’re onto the right idea. I am a worry wart and so is my husband. He planned all of our moves carefully...borrowed friends trucks wherever possible. Rented some, too. Sold things to our new buyer that we didn’t need at our new place. I went with our daughter and her husband to Dave Ramsey’s broadcasting studio and it was so exciting! (Quite sure reservations are necessary). There was one or two couples there that day who were able to announce they were totally debt-free! We could watch Dave broadcast through the sound-proof glass into his office! On each hour, when news and commercials were on, he came out and greeted all of us, asked us where we were from. It was really very nice. They had fresh baked cookies and coffee for guests....southern hospitality!
My parents raised everything they possibly could and canned everything she possibly could. We had our own pork and chickens. We sold hams and frying chickens. Mom sold eggs.
Raised beds are new to me. I see a lot of in-ground soil wasted between those! Dad had their farm a year before he and mom married, so he planted an orchard. Mainly apple trees that had ripe apples from June until frost! The first apples were wonderful for jellies, others were for canning and my mother canned her own apple pie filling. They were her favorite fruit so she made apple butter, and also dried or dehydrated apples.
Raised beds are NEW tome. We never had any, except framed in-ground lettuce beds and warm beds for growing sweet potato slips. Only in-ground planting...so more yield per acre! Wood is too expensive at THIS time to invest in framing raised beds, plus the plants dry out more quickly in raised beds.. How much soil does it take to fill a raised bed, vs in-ground planting? Also, I see what looks like enough unused soil between them to grow a whole row of in-ground plants.
In areas where we didn’t plant veggies, we had large strawberry plants for making shortcake, jams, and jellies. We also had a large grape harbor.

We have no debt at all any more, apart from a really low house payment and we're going to pay that off in a few months. 39 years of marriage and we've had one vacation, a week spent in our old pop up camper. No debt equals maximum freedom. Oh, we did buy a tractor, though. Paid cash for a '51 Ford 8N. No bells and whistles but my 62 year old back thanks me every day!

I needed this video. It's my first garden this year. We're working on our debt snowball. I really need to put a bunch of mulch down for weeds. I've been calling local companies to try to get it for free. But for now I'm grabbing all the cardboard I can just to start putting down a weed barrier. All I've got right now is some sunflower seeds in the ground. Looking at starting our compost pile and really working on that. It's not glamorous, but it's what I can afford right now.

Good advice, Jill. Being an almost-retiree, I can confirm that being debt-free is very liberating for anything you are trying to accomplish!
I just started gardening recently and have raised beds due to the extremely rocky clay-based soil here. I love it! I am definitely not saving any money on growing food but the joy my gardens provide is worth it. Beauty is a critical component - based on the recent Growing Gardeners class (WONDERFUL!) I now know that what I am after is a Potager garden.
Good luck with the plant sale!

5 years ago we started paying off debt to be free of anxiety. Going strong, we’ve begun planning retirement with aspirations to leave our children with a beautiful homestead debt free. I planted turnips and radishes today. Growing food has saved us $ and given me an outlet for my nerves

When I was a kid, farmers were coming every week to sell us their produce. They would tell us the next crop that would be coming soon. We didn't have markets and these farmers were selling out of their car in the streets and all the neighbours were waiting for them. It was cool!

Have so enjoyed hearing your story. What an inspiration!! We presumably have forever home place, land, greenhouse, barns yada yada...we would sell out and purchase another place if we could do it debt free or with less debt. Hearing your "why" ...and even your hows...has my wheels turning. I bake to pay for my seed and soil😉 and also started selling seed starts on a small scale a couple years ago. Have expanded this year much through your encouragement and am REALLY anxious to get permaculture garden beds started (which seems like such a daunting task since I do most of the gardening/growing by myself and my husband needs to watch a few more vlogs to buy into the no big tractor "toy" till method). Just want to say thanks and YOU ROCK, JILL.

This video is so genuine and inspiring! This actually came at the perfect time! I'm right at the point where I am investing in my (city) homestead and producing more so I can have just a humble little stand at a little farmers market, but that's a big step for me. Sometimes it's hard when I see all the pretty gardens with all the shiny pretty things, but I have to dig my heels in and focus on my journey. This is more fuel for my fire and I am so excited; thank you

Do you just sell veggies during your plant sale or do you also have a flower sale with sunflowers 🌻 etc. I bet that would be a easy and inexpensive sale you could add. Like maybe a branching sunflower plant.
    People would buy those.

Lumber is so expensive so I just bought fencing planks for raised beds, so much less expensive, the Stivers gave me the idea. Creativity is the key to saving a lot of money. Ask older people, they have great ideas for saving money.
