Thank you Jill! The fall garden has always intimidated me. I just bought a calendar to use as a garden journal, I hope it works for me! I don't wantvto miss out on a fall garden again!
Thank you for taking time out of your busy life schedule family move illness to share this video. We get attached and miss you when you're gone. Take care of yourself you matter. Enjoy your family and everything else will fall in line. 🙏💛
Here in California we don’t get any winter so it’s either summer or fall/spring. We can get 80 degrees in November and December. I will start my fall/spring garden in September-ish. I wish I had more land so since I don’t I definitely need to plan better. Thank you Jill for all of your encouragement.
So good to see you!!! Last Fall was the very first ever fall garden I grew. Yep, I was one of those that just never thought about growing food in the cool weather. It did really well too for my first time. So I'll be starting seeds really soon, like in the next week, I think. My hardest part of growing in the fall was figuring out when to put the plants out. Here in zone 8a, we sometimes seem to go from summer to winter and not have but maybe two weeks that feel like fall. If I put them out when the charts say I can, I feel like they are going to burn up, so I try using some shade cloth held up by sticks. lol And then before you know it, I'm taking it down and putting up some frost fabric. Anyway, it was fun. Like you said, no pests.
Fall is by FAR the easiest garden to grow here in So Cal. No pests and minimal rain... at least we get some sprinkles. Not having to water every AM and PM is a blessing here.
So happy to see you this morning. I know it's such a crazy busy time for you. I am going to take your advice and plan a fall garden. I am in New York City 7B so I will be following you on what to try. Bless you and your family. I will be praying for you all in your journey.
Good Notes is the best! I can create garden plans in Procreate and move them into Good Notes, with pictures and notes for reference. I always start with paper and pen, moving notes into digital format for long term storage. My planting maps are always hand drawn, as well as drawn in Procreate because I think better with a pen in my hand :)
I grew my first overwinter garden last year. Garlic, onions, beets, carrots, peas, pumpkins, squash and zucchini in 6a NJ. This year I already started my own seeds in 4 inch pots - bok choy, cabbage, broccoli and brussel sprouts for the first time
Yup. NorCal is at ~30% of normal. Sigh. One day we will replenish that water table. Hopefully it doesn’t have to wait for a melting ice age or something. 😒
Timely vlog 🤩 we also seem to be moving in the next month or two and am going to take notes on starting seeds etc for fall in the midst of this crazy of packing etc etc ❤️
Dear Jill ,thanks for the video. I know your so very busy. I for one would understand if you don't have the time some days. Just do what you've got to, take care of yourself. And your family . 💘 and peace and prayers to you all.
When are you going to have more t-shirts?? I absolutely LOVE the tank you are wearing. Good luck with your move!! When you guys stayed at Roots and Refuge Farm I just knew that you and your family would be moving there 🤗 So happy for you all!! I know you will miss Jess but maybe you can go visit her and she can come visit you Have a beautiful week ✌🏼💚🙏🏼
I totally agree with you because every year I plant my green beans and tomatoes in the same spot and they seem to like those spots a lot so I totally understand what you are saying I've always had problems at the other end of my raised beds still trying to figure out what is best to plant what and the soil is not that great so I'm trying to figure that out too and this is very helpful what you're talkin about thank you.💞😊
Planting my first fall garden and looking forward to fresh green beans, carrots, radishes and broccoli as it turned to hot to early for the summer garden! And radishes bolted, broccoli grew but only half put out measly florets! Definitely worth a try! Last year my summer garden went into November (zone 6a) our normal first frost is October 11-20! Thank you for your encouragement! 🤗💚
Love all of your videos. Your so sweet and down to earth. And have such a beautiful family. I do not comment much. But have been watching your videos for awhile. And your one of my favovites and also Jessica. I love her too. Love ya God Bless Hugs 🥰❤
Do you mind checking what etsy shop you got the garden planner from? I digitally plan in goodnotes and I have been looking for a premed garden planner/journal
Premed = printed? I honestly can’t keep track of a tangible journal. Like, ever. That said there’s an app called Smart Garden that I was looking into recently. It’s $30/yr and has great variety catalog info as well as a garden designer module and a scheduler for feeding and whatnot. Looks neat. I myself just use my phones calendar. That is quite literally as much as I can handle. 😂
@@melissasullivan1658 Thanks I will look into that. It was supposed to be pre-made. With goodnotes you can basically build your own journal, make your own with a program like powerpoint or presentation. Or you can buy some pre-made on etsy and such.
Jill, your planner that you bought off etsy was it a garden planner? Do you mind giving me the name of etsy shop and what planner I really need one for my garden. You can DM me if you have time. I know you are really busy... Love your channel
Here in Alabama we have the tornado sirens on the first and third Wednesday. Hope you are safe…we don’t play around when it come to the tornado warnings. Too many people have lost their lives because they don’t take them seriously!
I just planted out another round of carrots, beans, lettuce, kale, beets. And started cabbage inside. Hopefully I have enough time to get a harvest from them 😊 Those sirens scared me, I thought I was hearing something here, not through my phone 😅 oops. Hope all is well!
Great video Jill, it was good to see you & Nathan! You are a great teacher of the garden and always have such a positive attitude! Thank you for that. So Nathan is the reason your camera is fogging up so much lol 😂 Tornado Sirens while you are videoing what’s the chances of that! 🤷🏻♂️😂 Thanks Y’all Again!
I weigh how much value the current crop has to me compared to the fall crop. For example, I really like tomatoes but I can go without eating kohlrabi. If the tomatoes are healthy and producing well, then I leave them until they’re killed by frost and we don’t grow kohlrabi that year. However this year my tomatoes are plagued by fungal issues and probably won’t make it until frost. I am anticipating filling those beds with lesser loved fall crops like kohlrabi, beets, greens, turnips, spinach, etc.
It depends on your zone. I started way too early for my zone but it’s an experiment. I’m in 9b and should be starting fall seeds in late august. You look at your first frost date and then pick up your seed packets and calculate when they need to be in the ground + add a few weeks for sowing. :)
Also, can you confirm this is the correct sequence. Plant cover crop in fall, let it remain on top of raised bed over the winter then turn into your soil in the spring???
Depends on the cover crop. If it’s a legume of any type you’ll want to chop them down right when they begin to flower. Then they’ll take the winter to break down as a mulch and then early spring you can mix them in or just leave them there, plant your plants, and mulch with something like straw or whatever if needed.
You and Jesse are so smart and I hope to learn from you a little every year. My goal next year us that black tarp that keeps weeds away. My husband said the same thing. Make my garden much smaller and succeed at it then add But BUT keep the _ _ _ _ weeds out. I never seen Nat your hubby till this video. I want to plant the seeds on plant warmers in the house to transplant fir next years spring garden. Just need to figure out the best time to do that. I really enjoy you as nd Jesse's know knowledge. I plan on throwiing turnips in all over the garden as a grow cover then start in in the spring.
I got you on the specialty broccoli and cauliflower. Started a crap ton and Sean recommended to hold off on them this year and go with things that required less space🤣🥴😉
Was that your bunny running around the garden? Its so cool he knows its his place. My bunnies stay indoors because I am afraid of predators and i heard they live longer indoors too
Hi Jill, I was wondering-how do you use an amazon wish list? I tried to buy you something, but it looked like it was going to be shipped to my house. Do I use your P O Box address? And do I address it to Whisperingwillow farms? Never mind! When I took out everything but the gift the wish list address showed up!
So just out of curiosity, I know Jess had mentioned she was wanting to let beds go fallow the 7th year.....would that be where you are just doing cover crops? I dont know what the left and rights of whatever are. Lol
Good luck with your new place! I love Roots and Refuge and watch regularly. I’m interested to see what you do with it. One thing I noticed is that you talk really fast…. You might think about slowing down a little. My mind had a hard time processing and keeping up with all that you were saying. Once my mind caught up sounds like you have lots of great plans!
Not trying to tell you how to live, but what I do and what may work for you is overplanting everything, and personally I plant it in random areas or neighbor’s places with permission. You seem to have a gap in the market in your area, where fall starts are not available and not in good variety, so maybe you should put a stand on the new property and sell fall starts that you didn’t use to plant your own garden. You won’t have to spend any time planning and you can make money off the extra starts
I'm not seeing the link to the garden planner you said you would add. Am I missing something? Would be helpful not to have to look through hundreds of them, if I like the one you already found. AND you have already done that research.
I'm glad you mentioned notes. Reminded me I want to jot down what did and didn't do well this season because I grew so many new items. 💓✌️
Thank you Jill! The fall garden has always intimidated me. I just bought a calendar to use as a garden journal, I hope it works for me! I don't wantvto miss out on a fall garden again!

I was thinking this morning, where's Jill? I know you're busy moving but so happy to see you!
A good idea. Spreadsheets will help also.
I always have issues knowing when to plant stuff for fall/winter gardening.

So looking forward to seeing how you'll tend to Jess' garden that we've all come to love 💕

Also, I would love to see your rainstorm video clips. We don't get rain here in So Cal... under 3" for the year. ☹

Always amend your soil when planting.

I grew my first fall garden last year loved it the best bean harvest evet
I like the fall garden because the air and the soil is warm making things take off faster than in the spring.

I pl most my garden schemes on the refrigerator.

Fall Gardening is one of my favorites 🥦
I use my computer to make printouts of my planned garden.
Lol, hubby...coz I'm hot!
Oh my tornado warning! Be careful. Praying for you all

EMPTY WALLS! here too
I love your organization it gives me a kick in the butt to get going! Thanks
Was just thinking that it's time to get my Fall seeds going.
Can you tell me what the name of the garden planing program is?
Jill, your planner that you bought off etsy was it a garden planner? Do you mind giving me the name of etsy shop and what planner I really need one for my garden. You can DM me if you have time. I know you are really busy... Love your channel
Interested in garden planner as well. TIA
Here in Alabama we have the tornado sirens on the first and third Wednesday. Hope you are safe…we don’t play around when it come to the tornado warnings. Too many people have lost their lives because they don’t take them seriously!
I trim my tomato plants but tomato plants really grow on their own.
Cabbage is there at your new farm.
Then you can print your plans and make changes manually and update your plan.
I just planted out another round of carrots, beans, lettuce, kale, beets. And started cabbage inside. Hopefully I have enough time to get a harvest from them 😊 Those sirens scared me, I thought I was hearing something here, not through my phone 😅 oops. Hope all is well!
How do you remove cover crop from raised beds? Thanks for the video. I could only imagine how busy you must be💚
some people cut them down and allowed them to die/break down into the bed under a silage tarp.
I use my ipad and a goodnotes planner to plan everything, including my garden! that planner is super cute, I'll have to check it out!
Great video Jill, it was good to see you & Nathan! You are a great teacher of the garden and always have such a positive attitude! Thank you for that. How ruthless are you when you have a health plant still producing in a space that you want to plant fall brassicas or root crops?
I weigh how much value the current crop has to me compared to the fall crop. For example, I really like tomatoes but I can go without eating kohlrabi. What crop are frost hardy and can sustain the winter? I'm zone 7b in North Carolina.
What's the link for the good notes app?
I would like to grow flowers but medicinal ones.
Good Morning 👋💜❤️💚👍
I'm working on the fall garden now❤
Those tomatoes look beautiful!! Have you seen Justin Rhodes mobile chicken coop that goes on raised garden bed?
When do you start your starts for fall
When do you start planting seeds for your fall garden? When do you plant starts if you buy them?
It depends on your zone. I started way too early for my zone but it’s an experiment. I’m in 9b and should be starting fall seeds in late august.

I really enjoy you as nd Jesse's know knowledge. I plan on throwiing turnips in all over the garden as a grow cover then start in in the spring.
I have used tarp in past no success. Mulch with hay or dry grass. Organic breaks down adds nitrogen and keeps weeds down
Good advice!
Wednesdays are tornado siren testing.
I got you on the specialty broccoli and cauliflower. Started a crap ton and Sean recommended to hold off on them this year and go with things that required less space🤣🥴😉
Was that your bunny running around the garden? Its so cool he knows its his place. My bunnies stay indoors because I am afraid of predators and i heard they live longer indoors too
Yay! So excited to see this video!
If you want a cash crop grow Ginsing.

Where do you order your seeds? TIA.
Stay away from clover the plant will not leave.
DO YOU CHOP AND DROP?
What variety of brocolli do u get
I’m a little late to the party, but did the tornado sirens turn out to be serious business??? 😨
I’m confused about cover crops. If you turn it into your soil in the spring, doesn’t this encourage new weeds to emerge???
Following
Tarp it for awhile before planting

You are going to need a crew of help.
I would like to grow flowers but medicinal ones.
Echinacea is a gorgeous long lasting flower!
